Newsletter

Kennels situated at 51 Cromer Road, Hainford, NR10 3AU (on A140) and are open by appointment only due to Covid 19.

Note from the Editor Welcome to the Winter edition of the newsletter, bringing to a close a very turbulent and difficult year for us all. At the time of writing we are waiting to hear which tier we will be placed in once lockdown 2 ends in a few days. I’m sure every one of us has had a tough year, dealing with the many problems that Covid 19 has thrown at us, and trying our best to make the most of it, and enjoy our pets to the max. My husband and I finally managed to move into our house in September after 13 months of renovations. The dogs seem to have settled very well, and coped with another change. It helps they now have a big garden to explore, complete with squirrels to watch in the trees, and snakes in the pond over summer. We also managed to enjoy a weeks holiday in Cornwall, to a brilliant dog friendly place called “Bed and Basket”. It’s all geared around dogs, they are even allowed on the sofas! Each barn has an enclosed patio, and ours opened into one of the secure exercise fields, which was so handy when you have a Houdini dog like Bella. We made the best of the situation, stayed away from crowds as much as possible, and enjoyed finally having a break. The dogs loved that Cornwall is very dog friendly, they were made welcome almost everywhere we went. Jack did start to feel his age a bit (he’s 11 now) and decided to have some naps in some very picturesque places! I wish you all a happy, and healthy Christmas, with the hope of a fantastic 2021.

Co-ordinator’s bit What a strange year it’s been. I hope you’ve all managed to stay healthy. I’m sure like me, especially those of you who live alone, have appreciated the company of your dogs. Those of you who have visited the kennels will have noticed a new face. We said goodbye to Wallis in October as she moved to pastures new and welcomed Paige, whom many of you know already, to the team. The lifting of the lockdown in July enabled us to get back a little to normal at the kennels with a restricted list of volunteers allowed back to walk the dogs. It also allowed us to do a small amount of fundraising. The marvellous group of volunteers who got up at 4.30 a.m. on a Sunday morning to take our stall to Harford Bridge Car Boot Sale raised us over £3000 which ,of course, was helped A warm welcome to Paige by the magnificent amount of donations to our bric a brac shop. Once racing was allowed at the stadium, we were allowed to collect following very strict rules. The public were very generous in their giving. We also managed a couple of collections at Jollyes in Sweet Briar. To everyone who gave so generously to our fundraising on Face Book we were delighted to receive a cheque for over £3000. We are keeping our fingers crossed we might be able to have our March Open Day which we will make our Auction as we have some fabulous greyhound memorabilia up for bids. Hopefully in the not too distant future we will also be able to have walkers in again. We did have a little excitement in October when 7 of our dogs with their owners completed their film star appearance in a feature film “Provisional Figures”. They were impeccably behaved, that’s the dogs, not so much the owners! My JJ grabbed a starring role with one of the main characters and coped very well being away from his Mum for most of the shoots. He’s such a Mummies boy! Hope you all have a happy Christmas and a better New Year. Christmas will be a bit different this year for all of us but let’s all look forward to meeting up in the Spring Open Day.

Corinne Remember to take lots of festive photos of your greyhounds in their “Christmas Bubbles” for us for the spring newsletter. Keep an eye out for “spotted” greyhounds too, you never know where they will spring up! Please email your stories and photos to michele_storer@hotmail.com

Blue’s Buddies

A MESSAGE FROM BLUE Hi! My name is Blue, I recently made myself comfortable with David only to find he has got jobs for me. Already he is taking me to something called “training class” where I am supposed to do everything I am told…………………….no chance…………….I am not ready for that. I do get a lot of little sausage pieces though which is good and I have made some new friends. Apparently I am now in temporary charge of recording and managing Standing Orders, Kennel Sponsors, Annual Donations and many other things that involve staying awake. HELP!! I think I need rehoming. My first task is to thank Hetty for everything she did and to thank all of you people I haven’t met yet who have been brilliant in supporting the kennels throughout this Panda thing. Hetty told me about the Panda called Emic but I didn’t and still don’t understand. Lots of my friends in the kennels have found homes recently which is brilliant and if any of those would like to swap with me please tell them to give me a woof. Joking really, I am just a nervous beginner at the moment so please understand if I get things wrong or oversleep. Apparently Hetty had Helpers so for the time being I am going to have Buddies, get it, “Blue’s Buddies” good eh! So if you wish to donate, set up a Standing Order, Sponsor a Kennel etc. and become a Buddy then please let me know. All the information is apparently on something called a website, which I thought was a place where spiderman lived. I have a lot to learn www.yarmouth-greyhound-homefinders.co.uk. I hope everybody keeps well and has a very waggy Christmas.

Fundraising – a difficult year Most of our usual fundraising efforts this year have not been possible. Open Days have had to be cancelled and the various events and fetes we would have attended most weekends through the summer did not take place. On the positive side, Sandra Clayton and Debbie Bush have been able to do lots of car boot sales during the period that lockdown was lifted and raised a fantastic £3266.20. Thank you to all those who donated so much stock that could be sold. We can’t store any more stock at present but would really appreciate it if you could hang on to it until we can restart. We have had a Zoom quiz and Barbara Pearce has organised an Armchair Quiz for December, which will have closed by the time you see this Newsletter. As we have not been able to hold the Xmas Fayre, Debbie Bush has organised an on line raffle for two Christmas Hampers which, at the time of going to press, has raised £279 with another week to go. We have been able to hold 3 collections at Jollyes Pet Store in Norwich and have another planned for 19 December, lock down rules permitting. We also have a provisional date at Taverham Garden Centre on 5 December. If you and you hound would be able to do a one or two hour slot you can contact me at linda.johnson@ntlworld.com or watch out for the request for volunteers on Facebook. There have been on line auctions of some nice donations that have raised much needed sums. The Lottery has continued, although the day has had to change from Saturday to Wednesday during both lockdowns. As of going to print are still 3 places available so contact Phil Pearce at pusspearce58@yahoo.co.uk for further information. We are still looking for people to sponsor kennels or you can sign up to a monthly direct debit (for as little as you wish). Forms are available on the website www.yarmouthgreyhound-homefinders.co.uk for the sponsor ship or contact David Jones at jones432@btinternet.com for the DD form for a regular donation. We are now collecting stamps (see separate article) and I hope to be able to get the first batch to the dealer once lockdown is lifted. It’s quite exciting as, in addition to current stamps, we have been given some really old ones – even a couple with Queen Victoria on them! Not expecting a fortune but I’m hoping they might be worth a bit more than the run of the mill ones.

If you have any ideas for fundraising that can be done Covid notwithstanding please contact me at linda.johnson@ntlworld.com or Corinne at corinnedouglas18@gmail.com or at the kennels. Thank you for your continued support and keep your fingers (and paws) crossed we can all get back to normal next year. Linda Johnson, Chair – Fundraising Committee

Blue’s buddies (part 2) Here I go, my first real assignment. I hope it works out. If I get swamped with offers I will just have to go back to bed and leave it to Mr Grumpy. Can you fill the space on the board in our kennel? Now is a good time to think about sponsoring a kennel and have your name displayed in that kennel. Perhaps you would like The sponsor board at the kennels to sponsor for a friend or use as a gift for a friend or loved one. Your workplace might like their name displayed in a kennel and on our back wall along with a few of their business cards. Perhaps you would like to sponsor a kennel in the name of a loved pet.

Sponsor page on our website

However you decide to sponsor it will help and support all the greyhounds awaiting homes. You will find a form in the “Help Us” section of our website www.yarmouth-greyhound-homefinders.co.uk or you can contact me. Sponsorships start at £50 for a whole year. Some kennels have more than one sponsor which is brilliant. Thank you in anticipation from all my friends currently in the kennels.

Letters to the editor Hi Michele, We rescued Chickey on the 8th June. What a joy she is, stubborn, willful but starting to play, she is slowly coming out of her shell. She has found the sofa, beds and toys. When Molly (dalmation) takes the toys to the garden chickey goes out and brings them back in.

Dear Michele, Here is Ronnie, he really enjoyed his first holiday to Sizewell in our touring caravan a few months ago. Where he made himself very comfortable! He loved the walk to Thorpeness and Aldeburgh.

The 2 girls cuddle up together on the sofa, Rex n Chickey play together and both pick on Molly, but shes a good sport. She had clean bill of health from her mot and jabs this month. They all get on so well, we are very thankful to Molly for letting us bring her home, wouldn’t be without her grumbley self. Sam Millar

Dear Michele There are not many breeds of dogs that would endure being in a room with other dogs (6+ dogs) they have not met and people they do not know, greyhounds however are just so accepting it was truly amazing to be with them. Recently we have been extras in a film that is being made and one of the focal points is greyhounds, not one cross word between them all, repeating the same take over and over, still no complaints from them!! I know I am biased but they truly are a wonderful breed/pet. And yes in most of the pics they are sleeping, only time we were allowed to take photos. Debbie Bush

Pupdate On 29th May 2017 Sterling Queen whelped an unplanned litter of 5 male puppies, 8 weeks later they were full of energy and teeth and were ready for homing. Some 3 years on three of the brothers met up for the first time. Mylo, the dark brindle, Ted the brindle and Arlo, one of the three black pups met at the Stretch & Play park in Felthorpe. The sun was shining and the boys were full of beans for the first few minutes. Arlo wanted to play ball, Ted chased the ball and Arlo and Mylo watched on a little cautiously and climbed on the picnic table to find the treats. There were lots of greetings and sniffings. “Do I know you? Have we met before? Its difficult to say if they recognised each other but we all thought they looked similar to each other in a number of ways; body shape, ears, face and all a very similar size. It was fantastic to get them together again and see how they have grown. They had a fab time and the hour was over very quickly, we plan to meet up again perhaps in the new year.

Sylvie (Kellesboro Sally) - 2010-2020 Sylvie crossed the bridge on Saturday 17 October. She was diagnosed with osteo sarcoma of the ribcage in January. It was inoperable and all they could offer was palliative chemo. The prognosis was about 9 months with an operation plus chemo. As she was well in herself, I decided not to put her through chemo and to let it run it’s course, with the support of painkillers and CBD oil. She remained bouncy and eating well until the end, although she couldn’t walk far and had begun to lose weight in the last few weeks. The vet was amazed she kept going as long as she did. She collapsed in the garden and it was time to let her go. She was a very loving, cuddly girl and a complete trollope according to her Auntie Rae. I was privileged to be her Mum for 6 years. Roly and I will miss her. Run free Sylvie - Linda Johnson

Hi Michele I am so proud of my boys - after 17 very tumultuous months, Asher and Gad have settled beautifully into our new home. They took all the daily comings and goings when Steve, their daddy, was ill in their stride, they were my rocks when Steve died and got me through the loneliness of lockdown earlier this year. And in recent weeks they have coped with moving from our old house to live with my parents then 3 weeks later moving to our new home. They truly are wonderhounds and I am forever grateful I am lucky enough to be their person. I have also created a greyhound theme in our new house, I just can’t get enough of theses beautiful hounds. Long Stay Residents

Honey - 5 years

Louie - 6 years

A beautiful girl with a very loving and affectionate nature with those she knows. Loves all the fuss and attention on her so needs to be the only pet. She is bright and food motivated so quick to catch on to things. Good on the lead and ready to find her spot on the sofa. Honey is very playful and likes to nibble your fingers so best with teenagers+.

A very handsome boy who can be shy with new people so would be best suited to a quieter, patient home with no young children. Louie really feels the cold so would love a warm and cosy home to cuddle up in. He could live with a female hound but no small dogs/cats. He is playful and friendly once he knows you and a little strong on the lead at times.

Spotted We have passed by these gates loads of times but stopped to take some photos. They are at Chedgrave and the gates to Langley Park. Built by Sir John Soane in 1784. Lovely rampant greyhounds. The inscription means “always faithful which is beautiful. Cheryl Fulcher

If you have £199 to spare this could be an ideal gift for a hound lover! From Radley of London, and spotted on Jarrold’s website.

Spotted on “Lorainne” at the start on November, a houndie blouse. Available from Zara, at a more affordable £19.99

Extra ways to fundraise for us Have you thought of stopping sending Christmas Cards to non family members and donating the money to a charity? If so, please bear us in mind. Also, one or two people have set up Go Fund me pages in lieu of Birthday Presents. A modest target would be a much needed boost to our funds and the hounds would be forever grateful

Rocky’s Scandinavian Holiday My name is Rocky and I would like to tell all about my holiday in September with Mum. Dad and my siblings Amber and Chico. (Amber is a Jaffy. Staffie- Jack Russell Cross and Chico is a Chihauhau-Jack Russell cross. It all started about this time last year. Amber, Chico and me were taken to the vet for an injection for something called Rabies. (Very expensive. A.) Then a month later a blood test to see if we had what the vet called antibodies. I was a very good boy having that done. Chico wasn’t. He tried to bite the nice vet. After waiting a few more months because of lockdown we were finally ready to go. Yippee, I love riding in the motorhome with Amber and Chico. Mum and Dad spent ages loading things into the motorhome then suddenly we were off. A longish journey to a place called Eurotunnel. That was great, Mum gave the people who work there all of our blue doggie passports to look at. I was asleep while we were under the sea, so I don’t know if anything happened. (No, Nothing happened, A). When we got off the train Mum kept reminding Dad to drive on the right. We travelled through a country called France, and went into another country called Belgium. We drove a long way the next three days through The Netherlands, Germany and Demark staying at nice places at night time. Lots of lovely new smells to sniff at. When we left Denmark we had to go over a lot of long, high bridges into Sweden. (Again very expensive, A). When we were half way over the last bridge, Mum was excited , saying we were in Scandinavia. I didn’t notice any difference. We did lot of exciting things there. One day we went to a Moose Park. Mum was excited again. I was too. I know a moose is a nice fluffy thing to eat. What a letdown. They were big things with huge horns. Mum said the horns were antlers. Us dogs had to stay in the motorhome. Chico would have barked at them. He can be tiresome. (You can say that again, A.) We had lots of walks in forests and every day the colours of trees got more orange, gold, red and yellow and it was getting colder too. Dad took some pictures. I wanted to run in the forest, but I wasn’t allowed to, Mum and Dad thought I’d get lost. We wanted to fill up the water tank with fresh water at somewhere we stopped. Dad asked another man where the tap was. This man laughed, there wasn’t any taps because the water would turn to ice. Heard him tell Dad to get some from the river. (We did, But I boiled it for a couple minutes before pouring it into the mugs. A.) Another day Mum said she wanted to see some reindeer. Dad asked the nice lady at the campsite where to see them. Well, they were up a mountain, what a bumpy road. Amber said she felt very sick. Mum got excited again. Don’t know why. These reindeer were like those moose things but smaller. All they did was eat, and it was foggy, couldn’t see them properly. But as long as Mum is happy, we’re happy.

Page 14

www.yarmouth-greyhound-homefinders.co.uk

On the way home we stopped at this place called the Arctic Circle Centre. It was shut. But Mum and Dad didn’t seem mind. Saying something about it safer because of this Covid 19 thing again and not having to spend anymore money. Pity I thought us dogs were going to get a nice treat. I got the other two to have a poo the same time as me. I don’t know what this Arctic Circle is, but we did make Mum and Dad laugh. Had a walk around a big car park. Oh, it was cold and wet. Pleased Mum packed my big coat. At another place we stopped a man started talking to Dad because he said he liked the British. We stayed in this couple’s garden that night. Even let Mum and Dad have a shower in the a little building called the house. The man said it was 200 years old. Mum is nosey. (No I’m not. A.) Mum says to tell you lovely people reading this to look up Swedish Fireplaces on Google. Apparently this house had one in every room. I don’t know what she is talking about, but she did say they were very pretty . There was a collie dog living there and chickens walking about a big garden. I wish I had a big garden to run all day in. When we got back to where the train go under the sea, us dogs had to go to a place to have this box thing waved over our necks. (It was to check their microchip numbers against the numbers in their pet passports. A.) The lady behind the desk came round and made a big fuss of me because she said she had a greyhound at home. Mum and Dad say the only disappointment was they didn’t see the Northern Lights but don’t know what they are. I’m waiting hear of them talking of where we are going next time. I know we won’t be going under the sea again. Something about health insurance is too expensive and we can’t go anywhere soon because of this COVID19 thing. Goodbye from Rocky. (Perfect Southpaw), and mum Angie. (A)
