Kennels situated at 51 Cromer Road, Hainford, NR10 3AU (on A140) and are open from 10am until 2pm every day.

Note from the Editor Spring is fast approaching, we’ve had some lovely warm days, and I’m sure there’ll be some cold snaps still to come. The blossom is bursting into bloom, and the daffodils are very cheerful. It’s this time of year, when the dogs have their first walks without their winter coats, when I really start to look forward to the rest of the year. My two enjoyed a lovely few afternoons basking in the sun last week, but we’re back to fleeces today. Hopefully you and your hounds enjoyed the Christmas season? There is a montage in the this issue of photos I was sent from the festivities. I love to receive photos to include, it helps my job so much easier, so do please keep sending me your favourite photos.

Don’t forget it’s the first open day of the year at the Kennels on March 17th, St Patricks’ day, so why not add a touch of green to your outfit? There will be an auction, stalls and plenty of refreshments to enjoy on the day. I hope to see many of you there.

A few years ago I reported on how we took our two whippets to France with us for our holiday (back when we couldn’t leave Bella due to her separation anxiety). I’m sure many of us are waiting to find out it taking our dogs into Europe will still be possible, or what the new rules might be, once the dreaded “B” word takes effect at the end of this month. I’ll try and keep an eye on this, and report in for the next newsletter in Summer.

Co-ordinator’s bit As I sit here drying out after a very wet greyhound walk at Whitlingham-the first of 2019I think back to last year and we were in the throes of the ‘Beast from the East’. After the couple of beautiful spring like weather we had for the two previous weeks why could it not last until this Sunday? My two loved lying out in the sun especially my new girl Summer, in fact she would rather lie in the garden than indoors in all weathers. If we continue to save the greyhounds injured on the track by funding the repair of their fracture we need need to raise a significant amount of money each year. To help with this we have organised a Fund Raising Committee. Further on in the Newsletter you will find more details, if you can help in any way or have ideas please feel free to let us know. After a disappointing year for homing last year (we generally home well over 100 greyhounds each year and in 2018 only 98) we are pleased to say homing has been really encouraging so far this year. In this copy you will find a list of events to which we are taking our stall. The main aim of going out to various events is to promote the greyhound as a pet, if you would like to join us with your hound, talk to the public about the benefits of homing a greyhound as a pet you would be most welcome. They are great fun and why not enter your beautiful dog in the fun dog shows. The Open Days are also listed if you haven’t been to one before please come. It is a marvellous opportunity to talk to doting ‘slaves’ about dogs and I promise no one will worry if you wax lyrical about your adorable dog! The refreshments are good too! Hope to see you at some of our events this year, we love seeing all our rehomed dogs.

Hetty’s Helpers Hallo everyone, I hope you are all well, well fed, well rested and well loved. I sometimes wonder whether I am. Just the other day when Mr Grumpy was on the sofa watching lots of people chasing a round thing, I decided to join him. I snuggled up, fluffed him up a bit and got him just as I wanted then fell asleep. Just as I was dreaming of a bowl full of chicken he suddenly woke me up saying he had something called cramp. I think that must be another word for grump. He got up and walked off so I stretched out and went back to sleep. Once again, just as my favourite pasta was being added to the chicken, I was rudely woken up and asked to move. In fact I was shoved out of my now warmed up patch just so he could sit down again. It is such a trial living with Mr Grumpy I don’t know how I put up with him! It is just the same with that Romeo, who I have been forced to put up with. Even when I get comfy on his bed he just has to invade my space. (See picture for evidence of what I tolerate.) Anyway what does keep me going is the amazing generosity of all of you people out there. My Easyfundraising campaign now has 78 supporters who have raised £548, brilliant. We also have some new kennel sponsors but there are a few kennels that only have one sponsor and could do with some more. Perhaps you know someone who would be interested and if so please tell them all about it and how it helps my friends in the kennels so much. I went for a walk the other day with Taggy, who has been in his kennel for quite a while, and he was telling me how well he is looked after, so well in fact I nearly changed places!! He would still love to own a sofa though and is really excited about the thought of someone coming to take him home. Thank you so much to everyone who helps by standing order, easyfundraising and kennel sponsorship you are all wonderful. Hope to see you all during the coming year.

Fund Raising The new fund raising committee has been set up and has now had two meetings. Its purpose is to support the Coordinator, rally people to help run all events and look at ways of raising funds. These meetings have produced some good ideas, so watch this space. One thing we want to address quickly is collection pots. We know there are a lot out there but we do not have a record of who placed them and where they are located. If you have not already done so, please collect any you have placed and return to the kennels asap, whether or not they are full. Please pop a note in the pot of the name of the business and postal address where they were located as we do like to send a thank you.You are welcome to pick up a replacement but please leave a note of your name and where you will be placing them. There is a clipboard with a form to complete in the office. We are a bit concerned that some pots may have been collected by people not connected with Homefinders so, in due course, we will be issuing an official card to anyone who places a pot so they can identify themselves to the business. We have set up an on line shop on Facebook. Search for “Charity Shop – For Yarmouth Greyhound Homefinders”. At least a percentage of the proceeds must go to Homefinders. Please join, ask your friends and family to join and use it if you are trying to sell anything. There are two other ways to help raise funds.

Page 4

If you shop on line please join Easy Fundraising and nominate Yarmouth Greyhound Homefinders as your chosen charity. It costs nothing and all you need to do is make sure you go through Easy Fundraising every time you shop. Loads of well know shops and holiday companies are involved such as Amazon, John Lewis etc. You can also get a VIP card at Pets at Home. Again, you can nominate Homefinders as your chosen charity (please note, for some reason we appear under the Lowestoft branch but you can shop anywhere). We continue to be more than happy to cut a rehomed dogs nails at the kennels. If you are able to make a donation then that would be most welcome. Remember a vet will charge you about £10 to do the job. We are hoping to do some collecting at Taverham Garden Centre on some Saturdays throughout the year. If you, and your dog, feel able to give a Saturday of your time (between about 10 and 4) please contact us (details below). If you have any thoughts or ideas for fund raising, know of an event this summer where we might be able to have a stall , would like to help at an event or organise a walk please contact the Committee Secretary Linda Johnson (linda.johnson@ ntlworld.com), the Chairman Diane Wright (dianewright4@hotmail.co.uk), or the Co Ordinator Corinne Douglas (corinnedouglas18@gmail.com)

Letters to the editor Hi all

Hi Michele (and Molly and Wallis)

It has been quite a year for me and my mum. We moved to Suffolk and I am enjoying all the sights sounds and smells.

Nobby here, I just wanted to check in and let you know I’m really happy. My flakes on my skin have gone now and I think I’ve put a little weight on.

Mum had been diagnosed with a degenerative disk disease and they were bulging out. Mum needs surgery to remove them. Mum is doing ok and we take gentle walks why she waits for surgery. My new dad Adam has been ill too and awaiting surgery on his heart. He was also diagnosed with a rare condition called sweets syndrome which attacks the body. It is under control for now. I get him to fuss me and go for nice walks. My mum still takes phone calls for our slaves if they have hounds like us having problems settling in. That is mum doing her bit he he! Mum is very arty and likes to take pictures of me. Well why wouldn’t she?I am rather handsome you know.

I miss my new family at night time and keep waking them up, but I will get the hang of sleeping down stairs on my own soon. I have been a really good boy whilst walking, and daddy makes jokes about me and the little girl by calling us “lilo and stich” because we always follow each other around the house. Daddy always takes me for a long walk on the beach at 4 am and mummy takes me at tea time. There are lots of other doggies living near me but I just ignore them when we pass, mummy says I’m a gentleman anyway. I hope you are all well and please say “Hi” to all my mates, daddy said he will bring me back soon to see you all. Love and kisses Nobby. (P.S I haven’t eaten any guinea pigs)

Hi Michele I thought I’d send some photos of me having fun. Look at me enjoying tearing up all the Christmas wrapping paper, after opening all my treats. Mum took me for a lovely day out recently, but it was so cold she got me these lovely ear warmers. Don’t I look a toff! I love my retirement! Sapphire (Saffy) and Marrion Blackett

IN MEMORIAM Tanya (Confident Tanya) April 2010- January 2019 Fly free my beautiful baby over the rainbow bridge. You were with me for a far too short a time but made your mark on everyone you met with your great friendliness. A great ambassador for greyhounds with your happy disposition at events every weekend. Marley and I miss you so much. Corinne.

I received this amazing work of art in the post from Dave and his family, it seemed such a shame to just re-type it, so here it is in all it’s glory. Even the envelope was covered in lovely stickers, and praise for everyone at Homefinders.

BRAE

MOE

Brae is a stunning boy with a unique light brindle coat, he’s sure to turn heads out and about. Friendly and affectionate, Brae will gently nudge you for some fuss. He is very playful too and enjoys a zoom around or game of ball. Brae loves his comforts and will appreciate a warm home, he can a little strong on the lead at times but will make a lovely companion once settled.

A stunning boy, Moe has a gleaming black coat and a very happy expression. Moe has a great character, he is full of fun and just loves to play or go for exciting walks. Still a youngster, Moe only recently celebrated his third birthday, he is sure to make a super long-term family pet given some socialising with smaller dogs. Moe is very loving and will appreciate having company most of the time.

Congratulations We’d like to thank two of our volunteers, Angie and Steve, who got married a few weeks ago. They asked for donations for the hounds instead of wedding presents, and received over £300. We wish you all the best for the future, and thank you so much for being so thoughtful.
