Newsletter

Kennels situated at 51 Cromer Road, Hainford, NR10 3AU (on A140) and are open from 10am until 2pm every day.

Note from the Editor Welcome to the Spring edition of the newsletter, though at the time of writing we are expecting snow! The daffodils and blossom have already started to come through, so let’s hope it’s not a lengthy cold spell. With the past few weeks of rain and wind, many of our hounds may be feeling a bit cooped up with shorter walks. How are they coping? Do you have any good ways to entertain them on days when a walk just might not be possible? Let me know how you cope with bad weather? I am so looking forward to warmer, sunnier weather, can’t wait to get back to “normal” with the dogs, rather than being “downed rats” with wet jackets and muddy feet to be dealt with every time we come home. I have found that Jack is always keen to go out for a walk (he hates the back garden!), Whereas Bella suddenly seems to want to stay tucked up in bed, under the duvet if possible.

Don’t forget to take lots of Spring photos for the next issue. You can email me (michele_storer@hotmail.com) articles, photos, and “spotted” items to be included, I really do need lots of input to keep the newsletters full. To follow on from the dog friendly venues listed in this issue, perhaps you could let me know your favourite place to walk your dog? yhound H om Gre h t

Co-ordinator’s bit I’m sure many of you, like me, will be very pleased to see some dry and less windy weather. It will be lovely not to have a muddy walk I must say I’m very pleased mine have long legs and very short hair and feel sorry for those with little “fluffy” dogs. Christmas seems to be in the distant past, but we would like to thank everyone of you for your generosity in giving us food and treats for the dogs and cash donations. As we look ahead towards Spring, we start our events for the year. The first Open Day will be on March 15th.You will find all the Open Days listed elsewhere in the Newsletter so you can add them to your diary. There is also a list of all the events we have booked to attend this summer. We always welcome help with these events so if you fancy bringing your greyhound along to promote them as pets just contact me or Debbie Bush and we’ll let you have all the details. We would also welcome help with collecting at various venues during the year some dates are included in the Newsletter but there will be more to follow. We do not expect you to give up a whole day and we usually work in 2-hour shifts. At the end of March, we resume our collections at the Stadium and we always welcome more people to join us as we need to cover both the Turnstiles and Restaurant entrances on a Saturday evening. It’s a good way to meet other greyhound owners and swop tales of your greyhound’s antics! 2020 is going to be a busy one as most weekends we are out with our stall. David Jones and I will be on our travels giving talks to groups about the greyhounds and their suitability as pets. We also have a group of school children visiting the kennels in the Spring Term and we will be asking for help from owners by bringing their own dogs in order they can have some contact with them. Looking forward to meeting lots of you at the next Open Day.

Hetty’s Helpers, Sponsors, Fundraisers Happy New Year everyone may all your woofs be waggy. I have surprising news in that I have actually seen Mr Grumpy smile, however it was to my detriment. We were out for our usual walk recently when we came to a plank bridge over a stream. I went first and unfortunately slipped and fell into the extremely cold water. I turned to see Mr Grumpy actually laughing and Romeo wasn’t helping either. Mr Grumpy said my face was a picture whatever that means. I am sure I was pushed so needless to say I sulked all the way home and didn’t speak to anyone for the rest of the day. I was eventually cheered up by hearing that we have a few more people registered for easyfundraising when they shop online. I am hoping to reach 150 people and we are already well over 100. So please help us out for free if you shop online. I was recently asked if I had a poster to put up in a shop and I was happy to oblige. We have loads of posters, A5 size, that are just right for putting up in shops, offices, pubs, workplaces, front windows etc. If you can help us by placing a poster, I have many and there are many at the kennels. If you want any sent to you please get in touch with me at hettyisgorgeous@btinternet.com (yes I have my very own email address!) or give Mr Grumpy a call. Otherwise pick up some when you visit the kennels. I am getting pretty good at raising money outside shops, garden centres and other places (especially that shop that has lots of doggie biscuits, treats, toys etc see picture) and my friends Summer, JJ, Kiki, Toby and others are getting good at it also. If you and your doggie would like to have a go, I am sure you would enjoy it. I do a part day usually 2 hours which is enough time to get lots of treats. You will meet lots of nice people and you would be helping us enormously. You don’t have to be on your own, it is good fun to join those of us who are already there as I then get to have a chat with my friends. If you are interested let us know and we will supply more details. Thank you to everyone who helped us last year in any way, your support is very much appreciated by all my friends that are or have been in the kennels.

Letters to the editor Dear Michele

Hi Michele

My mum adopted Louie (Ballymartin Bolt) in July. He was so shy & timid when we got him but now - happiest, waggiest tailed dog ever, demands fuss & cuddles constantly & is a furry toy maniac. In this photo he stole my greyhound (Jewel) monkey toy & as you can see, he’s never given it back! His current fav toy is a furry Llama which appears randomly around the house regularly. He loves his sister (Millie - also adopted from Homefinders & whose butt is on the sofa with Lou) & cousin Jewel.

Snowy is such a papmered pooch, she loves having her nails filed by my daughter Aimee!

We are so pleased he came to our family, so thanks to the Homefinders team.

Best regards, Emma

Joanne Hi Michele, We homed Warren who seems to have been quite a celebrity at the kennels. He is settling with us very well and has become part of the family. Ness Giffin.

Hetty goes to school Hetty attends Hillside Avenue Primary/Nursery School in Norwich once a fortnight where she visits the children of the reception classes. The children, in groups or individually, read stories to Hetty and generally talk to her. Hetty helps the children to gain confidence in reading and conversation. The children love her and she loves all the attention she gets. The whole school has warmed to Hetty and it is a very positive experience for all. David

Long Stay Residents

Chickie

Donnie

A spritely character, Chickey really loves her walks and play time too. She appreciates the company of people and is very loyal to those she knows well, enjoying all the fuss and attention she can get. Chickey is a very clean girl and confident too, she is good with other larger dogs and is sure to be a fun and loving pet for the lucky family that choose her. (Any children must be older than 7.)

Donnie is very playful, friendly and affectionate once he is familiar with you but he does appreciate a little reassurance in new situations. Donnie is friendly with other hounds but needs some socialising with other breeds. He has proved to be housetrained, happy to be left for short periods of time and a great pet in the home (with children over 3).

This is a very relevant illsutration with all the elegant greyhound poses on page 4. One of Richard Skipworth’s from his book “Greyhound Glossary vol.2”.

Helping Homefinders With A Legacy In February Homefinders received nearly £1000 in memorial donations from people who have wanted us to benefit from the collections at their funeral. Such a lovely way for friends and family to remember their loved one. Often the letters I receive tell wonderful stories about how important greyhounds have been to these people and how big a part they played in their lives. It reminded me just how important it is to make arrangements for a legacy to Homefinders as part of your will if it is something that is important to you. It’s easy and simple to do – just a matter of ensuring our full name, address and charity number are included in your will with your specific instructions. And then, after signing, the will is kept in a safe place for the future. It’s the only guaranteed way of Homefinders benefitting after your death. Jo Guise

Trustees – Who are We and What do We Do? Homefinders has been independent from The Retired Greyhound Trust now for almost three years – and as such is required to have three Trustees who are there to ensure that things are run properly with due regard to charity legislation, health and safety, and financial matters. As well as have an overall view and input if necessary on how things are managed and run. The Trustees are Ian Woodrow who is the Accountant for the Stadium, Phil Pearce and myself Jo Guise. We attend the six weekly committee meetings which are Chaired by Stephen Franklin and attended also by David Jones, Corinne Douglas, Pam Franklin (Secretary), Justin Franklin, and Debbie and Chris Bush. The Trustees also meet independently of these meetings – about three times a year – to raise any points they want to put on the Agenda for Committee meetings. The Trustees are also responsible for the Trustee Report which is sent to the Charity Commission every year with a copy of the accounts. Although we are a small charity it is very important that we do things properly – and this structure helps us to achieve this goal.
