Note from the Editor Hello everyone, and welcome to the Spring Newsletter. It’s so hard to believe that it’s been a whole year since Covid 19 became part of our lives. 12 whole months... which reminded me of a song from the musical Rent, I love the words: 525,600 minutes, 525,600 moments so dear. 525,600 minutes how do you measure, measure a year? In daylights, in sunsets, in midnights, in cups of coffee. In inches, in miles, in laughter, in strife. In 525,600 minutes - how do you measure a year in the life? We’ve all been through such a lot in the past 12 months, our dogs have been there with us every step of the way. Jack and Bella have kept me sane, they are the best reason to venture out for our single daily exercise stint, which we’ve done through almost all the days winter has thrown at us. I’m sure we are all excited to see restrictions lifting soon (fingers crossed it all happens on the dates we’ve been given). As much as us humans are looking forward to being able to venture outside of our towns or villages, imagine how exciting it will also be for our hounds to have new sniffs, to smell the sea air again (for those of us too far from the coast to go there since December), and enjoy a bit of freedom. I also need to start working on being able to leave the dogs in the house for short peroids of time again, and building it up little by little. Being home with them constantly has made them both very clingy again, and I know I need to help them to feel happy to be home alone for a while.

Co-ordinator’s bit How are you all? I expect like me you can’t wait to get back to some form of normality. How much Molly, Paige and I have missed meeting you all at the kennels and at Open Days. Elsewhere in the Newsletter you will find some provisional dates for Open Days so hope lots of you will be able to come. These dates all depend on the government allowing us to once again mix. The last couple of days certainly lifted the spirits with blue skies and warm temperatures. How can days be so different? Misty and very chilly here today so coats on again for the greyhounds. My two certainly enjoyed lying in the sunshine in the garden for the first time this year. Financially this year we have managed to keep our heads above water thanks to the generosity of our owners. We can’t wait to get back out at weekends to shows raising the awareness of greyhounds as pets and I am sure Sandra and Debbie are looking forward to going to Car Boot sales again. As soon as the Stadium reopens to the public for racing, we will again collect, if any owners are interested in collecting on race nights with their greyhound please contact me. Once we are out of lockdown we will begin to organise our greyhound walks, we have an exciting offer of post walk refreshments in a pub in Winterton which is supporting us with events during the summer months. If you have a favourite walk in your area how about leading a walk for us? I would like to send a big THANK YOU to everyone who has supported us in so many ways over the last year it’s not been easy but with all your help and generosity we’ve almost made it, roll on June.

Hetty’s Helpers Or Patsy’s Page Hallo my name is Patsy, although at present I am not sure if it is Sit, Leave It or Down! I have come to live with Mr (I’ve never won the lottery) Grumpy. Oh yes I heard all about him through the kennel grapevine and I found out for myself recently when I woke him up at 5am. I will be helping….bossing about… Blue with all the jobs he has to do for Homefinders as he does need a bit of sorting out. We have decided that, for the moment, and in her memory, that we will retain the Hetty’s Helpers title which will still apply to everybody who has a kennel sponsorship, donates by standing order, donates annually or is registered with Easyfundraising. Blue tends to be upside down on the sofa most of the time so, as I am very good at numbers I am doing most of the work. I am so good that I know exactly how many biscuits Romeo and Blue have had and make sure I get the same. Here are some numbers that really matter Numbers Easyfundraising 127 Lottery 120 Kennel sponsors 43 Donations by monthly standing order 32 I can count as I know just how many biscuits/treats Romeo and Blue have had Mr (never won the lottery) Grumpy

Letters to the editor Hi Michele Dillon and his best friend Casper the cat, who I call ‘No not my cat’. He made friends with Dillon on the 1st January 2017, which was the day we got Dillon from Homers. Casper is a neighbours cat. We have so many cats where we live, Dillon just ignores them. Stay safe. Kathleen (Austin)

Dear Michele, Gad loves to look out into the garden on a sunny snowy day but it can be very tiring so his kind brother Asher is providing a headrest! Sarah

In Memorium Modric you came into my life. So beautiful and smart, I loved you right from the start. Although I knew the time would come when we would have to part, you will never be forgotten you left a paw print on my Heart. RIP my darling boy (Tyrur Modric) 2011-2020 Pamela Everett

Our beautiful big black darling boy “Shadow” (aka Danny / Artistic Talent) crossed rainbow bridge on December 1st 2020 aged just 9 years old. He got unwell in October and went downhill quickly, X-rays and blood tests showed he had chest cancer that affected his throat and spinal nervous system. He was our first Yarmouth Homefinders greyhound (but not going to be our last). He was a troubled soul when we first brought him home to North Wales, but with the help of Candy, Pearl and Magic he slowly settled in to home life and became a wonderfully happy big lad. He loved travelling all over the UK including so far away as The Isle of Skye . He was kind, gentle, loving and simply beautiful to have in our lives and he enhanced them with everything he did. He is also a lifetime kennel sponsor. We will miss his presence so much it’s heartbreaking. Especially him curling up with us on our bed every morning for a cuddle. He was a star. We love you big lad. Run free xxxxx All our love Magic, Iris, Coleen & Ed

Just a quick note to let you know we lost our Greyhound last year due to ill health. She was with us for 7 years after her rescue and passed away at 10 yrs old. Her Racing name was Tibbie Shiels, had 3 wins but hurt her ankle early in her career so was retired early. Too see her run was quite a sight . Someone described greyhounds to me once as 40mph couch potatoes and this really did sum her up very well. She will be missed loads. I also popped in recently to donate her special bed - she loved that thing Jim Jackson

My family would all like to say a big thank you to all at Homfinders for our card , it was a lovely gesture and we especially loved the poem on it. We all miss not being able to come down and see the hounds but hopefully normality will soon be back in life and we can come and say hello again and maybe in the future give another hound a loving home. For now we will remember the good times we had with Millie and hopefully the pain will ease for us as time passes. Thanks again, take care Rob Bunn and family

On January 27th I lost the best beloved Daisydog after over eight years together. We had such wonderful times and she brought me joy each day – and was loved by so many Aunties. Always known for her fashionable wardrobe of coats and collars she will be much missed and often talked about. Her back legs finally gave up after many months of wonkyness. I knew that it was only a matter of time before another greyhound arrived – and so on February 27th Tuppence moved in. She is from Kings Lynn RGT where my friend Kate volunteers and was spotted by another friend in Birmingham. She will be 3 in May and is a very happy poppet. I am looking forward to introducing her to her seaside life over the next few weeks and months. I am sure Daisy is wishing her well from the Bridge. Along with the rest of my crew. Here’s a photo of both, Daisy at the top, Tuppence below.. Jo Guise

A tale of two greyhounds Back in 2015 I got my first ever greyhound called Sean. He was a very nice loving friendly dog, with a huge problem. Separation anxiety. It took a good year before he could be left in the house on his own. There were times when I thought it would not get any better. He progressed with a lot of training until that issue was history. Sean taught me so much about life with a Greyhound and what sets them apart from other regards to training and unlocking their potential to learn new things. Sean was not toy or food motivated which can pose a challenge when training anything new or working on behaviours such as an interest in rabbits or squirrels ect. I found myself needing to think outside the box and get creative as to how I could motivate a dog who was independent in his way of being, especially on walks, where I did not seem to exist. In the house I was his world. To overcome his issues I got creative with his training by means of, premack principle and building toys and foods as primary reinforcers. Within a very short time Sean was very happy and willing to learn new things. When people think dogs are stubborn or not the most clever, its more that we need to think to ourselves what is it that motivates them and drives them. How can we unlock their potential and give them an outlet where they can enjoy what makes them tick and enjoy learning things from us. Sean did not like being at home alone at first and after lots of training and time. He became a dog that

Page 12

slept on the sofa when I went out. A dog I could walk any where. A dog that could learn some fun stuff. Sean was my rock and my teacher. Sadly Sean got bone cancer and we had to say our goodbye at the start of 2021. Sean was very special to me and I am thankful for every day he was with us. Now coming on to Arfer (Blue) We adopted Arfer about 3 weeks after we lost Sean. To be honest the house felt so empty now that Sean had gone. We talked it over and knew there was another dog that needed a home. Arfer is a 2 year old live wire. He does not have separation anxiety like Sean but he hates missing out on anything we do. It was not long before we noticed how bright Arfer is. He was clean in the house from the first night, slept well at night on his own and can be left. The intelligence came out in cheeky quirky behaviour like being a fidget and greedy regards to food and overall never staying still and finding his own mischief. Arfer was no doubt a challenge of his own. He is a very smart dog who needs a lot of daily enrichment to keep him from being unruly indoors during the day. Lots of brain games and decent walks. Once all these things were met, we had a calm happy hound who is easy to live with. He is playful and cheeky and who knows where he will go with his learning.

Adams first greyhound and my second. Two very different Greyhounds, both amazing in their own ways. Arfer is perfect for us and has helped us realise life must go on and whilst we miss them terribly, the ones we loose are always in our hearts. Run free Sean xx Katherine & Adam.

Noggy - Sep ‘16

Si - Feb ‘16

Noggy is a very handsome boy with big brown puppy eyes. He is a real gentleman; quiet, kind-natured and walks really well on the lead. Noggy spent a couple of weeks in a home and proved to be housetrained and quick to settle, however he did not like being left alone. Noggy would be best suited to a home with someone around most of the time and he may benefit from having a fellow hound friend to keep him company.

Si is a good looking smaller boy who is easy on the lead. He is housetrained and well used to the home environment. He has an affectionate and playful nature too, most enjoying a game of ball. Si would be best as the only pet in a grown up home as he isn’t very comfortable around children. He would benefit from a confident owner to help him enjoy the outside world more.

Message from Molly For those who didn’t already know, sadly Zac went to sleep for the last time back in October, in the comfort of his big bed at home. He made it to 14, still a puppy at heart but sadly his body couldn’t keep up. I cannot put into words how much he meant to me and how much he is missed. He really was a one off and the best friend I could have wished for, always by my side. The most gentle, kind-natured, loyal but cheeky boy. He was so loved and I wish we could do it all again.
