Note from the editor Welcome to our Winter edition of the newsletter. Where on earth has this year gone to? It really has flown by very quickly! The committee have deiced that we will publish the newsletter three times a year from now on, which will dramatically reduce the postage costs each year., meaning more of our fundraising efforts will be directed to the dogs. So our thoughts turn to crisp frosty morning walks, and we dig out the winter coats for our dogs. Don’t forget that the kennels stock a range of warm “clothes”, come along to visit and leave with a new doggy outfit!

Blue, Jack and I braving the cold last December at Northumberlandia, near my hometown.

Date: Winter 2015

Funnily enough my greyhound Blue much prefers the weather to be colder. He likes nothing more than a roll in the snow, or sitting out on a frost lawn.

Don’t forget that the 2016 Calendars are now is stock at the kennels, they would make a great Christmas present. For owners who have adopted their hounds over the past year, will your hound be a star? We have had a few “spotted” greyhounds on Facebook the last few months, keep up the search, take a photo and send it to me for the next newsletter: michele_storer@hotmail.com I’ll try to include as many as I can.

A Beautiful late Summer day - Walking in spectacular surroundings On Sunday 27th September, families, hounds and a few other sorts, amassed on the Winterton Beach Cafe car park, ready for setting off at 11am. The walk through the valley, the dunes are surprisingly hilly, was about as perfect as it could be, sheltered from what little sea breeze there was, the temperature, at around 70 degrees, was perfect for hounds and people alike. When confronted by the tallest of all the dunes, luckily it was time to turn onto the beach, which is welcomingly flat! The walk along the sea shore was made even more interesting for the families and the hounds by the appearance of two or three seals just off shore,

apparently it’s nearing the time for the seal pups to be born. The juxtaposition of the dark grey seals, all wet and shiny and the black greyhounds, shining in the bright sun, was something to behold. Would have made a lovely photo but the seals wouldn’t co-operate! A goodly number of well behaved hounds walking together, attracted attention from those also enjoying the beach, with quite a lot of questions fielded. All too soon it was time to head off the beach, back to the car park and a welcome drink for the dogs followed by a visit to the Winterton Valley Cafe for the families.

The Auction and Open Kennels - Sunday 11th October A lovely bright autumn morning and the auction, brought about a good turnout of hounds and people, for the final Open Kennel Sunday of 2015. For the first time ever the actual kennels were put into isolation, a 24 hour stomach bug was `doing the rounds` amongst some of the available pets, a disappointment for those who love to meet them but a sensible precaution, as there were lots of visiting pets. The popularity of Cheryl Coutts refreshment stall, with a wonderful selection of savouries and cakes, plus an unlimited supply of tea and coffee, can be judged by the fact that £300 was taken via donations.

At mid-day David Jones mounted the Auction Rostrum, (plastic crate) to get the auction underway, with Corinne Douglas overseeing the donated items, as the auction ended, the total bids added up to £400. The cake stall, Bric a brac, Homefinders sales stall and Tombola were all well supported, at the end of the day the final total was over £1800. Another enjoyable Homefinders day and thanks to everybody’s generosity a really useful amount was raised.

Letters to the editor

Dear Michele

Dear Michele,

Here is a pic of Misty previously Ellie (Pennys Easy) on the first evening in her new home with us. As you can see, she soon took a liking to her new bed! As with all our previous greyhounds, she’s settling in really well and is a pleasure to have.

This is Katie and my son enjoying a nap together. She is so gentle and cuddly. We have had her since last September 2014, we got her from Corrine. Boxer Katie can still run fast despite her racing injury, she goes out in Sheringham Park every morning.

I hope many more of them find homes soon!

Regards, Christina

Dear Michele,

Dear Michele,

It’s with great sadness that I have to tell you that Rosie (Butcher’s Girl ) has gone to the Rainbow Bridge. She was 14yrs. old and she was my baby for 12yrs. I miss her so much.

Just had to let you know that I was adopted very recently by Fonz and his family and, most exciting, I have just come back from my first holiday! I have lingered in Lincoln and Louth, hurried round Horncastle, and bounced round Boston. On top of this I have visited museums, tea rooms and had lots of lovely walks in the countryside. So many new smells it was almost too much to take in.

Best wishes to you all, Jennie and Terry Fewell

Name? Dear Michele, Here is a photo of Laurie, who we recently adopted. She is settling in nicely, as you can see she has already claimed the settee.

I am told that I was a very good girl and settled in my holiday home straight away as if I had been there for ages, but it is still nice to be back home with all my friends that I see on my daily walks. Roll on the next holiday! Lots of love to everyone, Lily

Hi Michele, We’d like to share with you send some photos of Monty. We have now had him for 9 months and we are very happy with him. Best Wishes, Kath and Steve Garwood. Dear Michele, I just had to send you this photograph of our Tina. Although the bottom had fallen out of her bed, it was as if she was saying “Well it’s my bed so I’m going to use it!”. It gave myself and my husband a good laugh. Regards, The Matthews

Dear all at Homefinders

Tina is 5 years old, we have had her for 2 years, and can’t imagine being without her. Best Wishes, Pat Sweetman.

Just to update you. Sean has settled in very well. He did struggle with his own company in the house for short times. I’m lucky that work let me pop home frequently. He manages to be left for 4 hours now and sleeps. He’s a great dog and him and my little chihuahua Td are a great match they get along very well. Not had any issues with them since day one.

Dear Michele, We have had our Buzz for about 31/2 years. He is doing well, still in charge of the couch, we have an armchair each, but would not be without him. He has brought so much into our lives, unfortunately we couldn’t have children, so all the love we have is going Buzzie’s way. Spoilt!? perish the thought. Thank you so much for our Buzzie. Yours Faithfully, S.A Kelly. Dear Michele, Lisa and all the lovely people at the kennels, and of course the greyhounds! How lovely it is to receive your truly fantastic newsletters on the progress of the greyhounds. You put the kindness and care into “canine”, thank you from the bottom of our hearts. God bless, look forward to hearing more news.

He loves us all and is learning new commands as we go along. He is clean in the house as well. He loves his food and has gained weight he’s 36 kg now. He likes a walk in the morning and a short one at lunch time and then he chills for the rest of the day. He is a clingy dog but he’s getting more independent as Td the little dog is an independent dog and he’s copying him allot.

Thanks again, from Dave, Prince the Dog and family..

He very kind to both kids and he loves us all.

Dear Michele,

I’ll see you in 15 yrs for another.

I am so pleased that the idea of the images of greyhounds in art has taken off so well in your Spotted Gallery. It has taken on a truly international dimension. I have a stunning new one for you from the US. I have just returned from New York where I used to live and my son is still there. I have always wanted to visit the Rockefeller country estate which overlooks the Hudson River. It has a fab collection of modern sculpture and the gardens are beautiful. But in the stable block I found these three large white ceramic greyhounds stored there from the main house which would date from the 1930s. Very rare. Had to take the photos through the bars of the stable enclosure. They would have belonged to John D Rockefeller the oil magnate and philanthropist, founder of Standard Oil. Mary Alexander

Warm regards Katherine

Dear Michele, Beautiful brindle girl Snow Spiral-Brie was taken away from us unexpectedly by a freak accident. The loss of Brie has effected all of us. Our loving thoughts go out to Amy, Hugh and Dooey at this sad time. Joanne x

Winter Survival - Greyhound Style! Recently I asked our Facebook group for their top winter tips, here are some of the replies: • Make sure there is a nice fleecy blanket on the settee to roll in when they come in wet • Nighties/night fleeces are a must at night times. Unless you want to share your bed with a shivering greyhound!!! • A umbrella near the front door to hold over your hounds when you go for a walk cause they don’t like the rain • Have their night fleeces/jimjams ready at the back door to slip them on when the houndies come in from their bedtime wees (we have to be quick with Asher cos once he’s down on his duvet there is no getting him up again...) • If you use some salt on your paths (or they walk on roads that have been gritted) when it’s icy remember to wipe your dogs feet thoroughly when they come in doors as the salt will harm them if they lick their feet • Clear the snow and ice promptly from your paths. Greys can easily slip and break a leg (Max once slipped on ice and sat down on his butt. The look on his face Asher and Gad all cozy after a was priceless) wet walk

And finally.... • Boil the kettle before you go out, so it doesn’t take so long to make a hot cuppa when you return. I’ll start another conversation on Facebook near the time of the next newsletter, to include in the next issue!

Spotted!

Left: Rare ceramic greyhound sculptures belonging to John D Rockefeller, seen in the stable block at Kykuit, Tarrytown, New York - previously the country estate of the Rockefellers and now a national heritage monument. An attractive short train ride from Grand Central station in New York, following the course of the Hudson River. Kykuit (old Dutch word for lookout) is set high up in the hills overlooking the river - well worth a visit. Spotted by Mary Alexander, see letter in letters section. Above: Greyhounds - we are everywhere. This was taken on one of the Go Go Dragons (I think number 55, Cyril). Spotted by Adam Ward, (shared on facebook)
