Free entry 1 Sept – 14 Sept The Soldiers’ Journey exhibition highlights Hampshire’s critical role in the First World War. Opening at ten locations across the County the exhibitions will bring this fascinating story to life with each venue featuring items of specific local interest. ‘Two people who once had a passionate affair meet again fifteen years later. Ray, fifty-ish, after years in prison, is confronted with his past when Una, twenty-seven, arrives unannounced at his office. Guilt, rage and raw emotions run high as they recollect their relationship when she was twelve and he was forty. Una is looking for answers not vengeance. Nevertheless, the consequences are shattering…’ Returning after a successful first run, ForwardThinking’s first production will combine a range of different theatre elements to re-tell one of the most powerful works written in recent years. The play touches on the ideas behind unwavering and misunderstood love, as well as tackling an issue which has been the subject of growing public interest in recent years. Is it always as simple as it seems? Or is there more than meets the eye… Suitable for ages 15+

Published forty years after the attack on the city and its hurried abandonment, the novel is told through the eyes of two families that remain. Inspired by a visit to the abandoned Greek leper colony, Victoria wrote The Island in 2005. It became an international bestseller. In ‘The Thread’ she returned to Greece to tell the extraordinary tale of Thessaloniki and its people across the twentieth century. Books for sale and signing on the night.

The Genius of Gaudí 1.30pm – 4.30pm £13 (no concessions) At the turn of the 20th century, Antoni Gaudí was working to create extraordinary houses for his wealthy patrons in Barcelona, and went on to design a third ‘cathedral’ for the city. In houses such as Casa Batlló and Casa Milà he brought new thinking to every aspect of their structure and internal design – but perhaps his Temple de la Sagrada Família has been his most fascinating project. Tutor Keith Hasted MA will look at Gaudí’s exceptional contribution to architecture through these unique buildings.

Songs for the Voiceless 8pm

£15 (no concessions)

‘Songs for the Voiceless’ is a collaborative project featuring the cream of the British folk scene. Inspired by the lives of the everyday people involved in World War 1, ten musicians have joined forces to write and record a selection of brand new works reflecting their stories. The project seeks to give a voice to those from the First World War who have a story to tell, but are not being heard. Sons and daughters, fathers and mothers; women and children, left behind lovers; families and communities; soldiers and civilians. All with a story to tell. All with a song to be sung. This unique live show promises to bring these stories to life with songs from the album and more, performed by Bella Hardy (2014 BBC Folk Singer of the Year), BBC Folk Award winner Jackie Oates and nominees Katriona Gilmore & Jamie Roberts; The Young ‘Uns; Ian Stephenson (KAN, 422, Baltic Crossing); Tom Oakes (Ross Couper & Tom Oakes), Michael J Tinker (Bright Season) and Matt Downer (Jamie Smith’s Mabon). In the days leading up to Remembrance Day, the concert provides a special opportunity to mark the anniversary of the Great War and its impact on the lives of many.

The Delines bring a slice of Americana to Winchester Discovery Centre. Led by vocalist Amy Boone (The Damnations TX), whose voice songwriter/novelist Willy Vlautin (of Richmond Fontaine) found so heartbreaking, so full of longing and resilience, that he built a band and wrote an album’s worth of songs and around her. “Amy’s voice has always stopped me in my tracks,” says Vlautin. “It’s all heart, beat-up but tough, vulnerable and worn. I’ve always wanted to work with her, so when she gave me the chance I spent a year writing songs for her. I wanted to write songs like her voice: songs that might have a drink in the morning but they still make it to work.” Their debut release, Colfax, is a stunning collection of songs with the intimacy of a midnight confessional. Like a beat-up Dusty Springfield after too many long nights working a dreamy after-hours bar, with the skid row heart of Tom Waits, the street-tough weariness of early Rickie Lee Jones, and the cool, laid back sound of Mazzy Star, Colfax tells haunting, modern stories through the musical lens of soul and roots music of decades past.

Enjoy your anger. Star of Radio 4’s hugely popular ‘Jo Caulfield’s Speakeasy’, and seen on Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow, Mock the Week, Have I Got News For You, Never Mind The Buzzcocks, The Apprentice: You’re Fired and BBC1’s The Politics Show, this is a fantastic night out for men and women alike. Robert Newman’s New Theory of Evolution

After covering weighty issues like death, love, religion and spam javelins, “The King of Edinburgh” (List) returns with a show about daftness, being uncool and bouncing joyously on the sofa.

Comedian, journalist, novelist and activist Rob Newman makes a hotly anticipated return to comedy with his first complete show in 7 years.

Dependably funny. Chortle

24 Box Office 01962 873603

Rob describes the 150-year controversy in evolutionary theory and explores how the latest science demonstrates that DNA is not destiny. From a Devil’s Orchard made by lemon ants, to female buffalo voting which way to go, from Prince Kropotkin escaping a Tsarist dungeon to altruistic vampire bats and Richard Dawkins’ postman wrestling naked, Rob Newman argues that cooperation drives evolution more than competition.

Comedy Club 4 Kids Suitable for ages 6+ Since 2005, the Comedy Club 4 Kids has been getting the best stand-ups and sketch acts from the international circuit to do their thing for an audience of children and their families but without the rude bits! It’s just like a normal comedy club, but it’s on in the day, kids are allowed in, and thus there is a higher than usual chance of heckles like “why is that your face!?”

James Acaster has something he’s been meaning to tell you. He’s been putting it off for some time. You might want to sit down. It’s time for another tremendous tour and what better way to celebrate than attending? Expect whimsical rabbiting on and awkward physicality throughout. Don’t expect to leave unchanged. As seen on Nevermind the Buzzcocks, 8 Out of 10 Cats and Russell Howard’s Good News, and heard on James Acaster’s Findings (Radio 4) and The Josh Widdicombe Show (XFM)
