Hiroshige’s Japan 53 Stations of the To ¯ kaido ¯ Road An exhibition of prints from the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford Free entry Utagawa Hiroshige is considered the last great master of Ukiyo-e woodblock printmaking. His most famous series was the Fifty-three stations of the To ¯ kaido ¯ Road, first published in 1833. Full of details of travellers’ experiences of the journey between the great cities of Edo and Kyoto, it captured brilliantly the atmospheric effects of place, weather and season.

Trash to Treasure A Great Waste Production

Free entry Proving that one person’s trash is another’s treasure, this exhibition celebrates creative recycling and challenges the way we look at waste. Everything in the exhibition was once something else. Waste paper, metal, glass, plastic and textiles have been remade into sustainable, useful, and often beautiful, objects. Ancient waste gives us valuable insights into the lives of ordinary people from the Stone Age to the Digital Age. What would your rubbish tell future archaeologists about the way you live? Find out how much of your trash is potential ‘treasure’ and make some treasure of your own in the maker’s space.

Driven out of their native northern Mali, Songhoy Blues recreate the lost ambiance of their homeland with raucous guitar anthems influenced by Jimi Hendrix and the American blues music distantly related to the desert blues of Mali. After working with Brian Eno, Damon Albarn and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs as part of the Africa Express project, the band were invited to appear at the launch of the project’s Maison des Jeunes album in London. Seann Walsh: 28 8pm

Children’s Concert

£14 / concessions £12

Seann Walsh has managed to search deep inside himself to find the inner strength to get out of bed and all the way into his support act’s car, parked just outside his flat JUST FOR YOU. Before you commend him too much for this act of heroism, be aware he will sleep in the car. In his last show ’The Lie-In King’, 2013 Foster’s Edinburgh Comedy Award nominee, Seann was living alone and trying to sort himself out. At 28 years of age he returns with his aptly named new show ’28’ where he is now living with his girlfriend, and she is trying to sort him out. Star of Channel 4’s Stand Up For The Week, BBC1’s Live At The Apollo and Michael McIntryre’s Comedy Roadshow, and Dave’s Argumental, Seann is a charming and charismatic natural born observational storyteller, and one of the most frighteningly precocious talents to emerge from the UK comedy circuit in years.

Peter and the Wolf 11am and 2pm £3 in advance / £4 on the door Back by popular demand Winchester Chamber Orchestra (WCO) and Friends will perform the ever-popular children’s classic, Peter and the Wolf, by Sergei Prokofiev. So grab a child, bring a snack, open your mind and prepare to enjoy this exciting, interactive, audio-visual experience. Oh, and don’t forget to book your tickets in advance – we ALWAYS sell out! Macbeth Gets Manly 7.30pm

£9.50 / concessions £6.50 Groups of 5+ £5.50 each

Shakespeare’s Macbeth gets an extreme transformation; pumped full of supplements and stereotyping. With the glorification of ‘Lad’ culture and male expectations set relatively in stone; isn’t the story of ‘Macbeth’ more relevant than it ever has been? ‘Macbeth Gets Manly’ draws on the pressures forced upon Shakespeare’s famous character and brings them into the modern world. Using a mixture of Shakespearean and modern text, the show focuses on the pressures Macbeth faced, ultimately exploring how the questioning of the character’s own masculinity drove him to eventual madness. Insecurity, paranoia and self-doubt are the basis of this highly physicalized performance. Expect to see one sweaty, exhausted performer and see Shakespeare’s story turned upside down. Suitable for audiences aged 15+ www.macbethgetsmanly.com Prostate Cancer UK is a registered charity in England and Wales (1005541) and in Scotland (SC039332). Registered company 2653887

Twin sisters Laura and Charlotte Carrivick are widely known throughout the UK folk scene for their engaging live performances, multiinstrumental dexterity (fiddle, banjo, mandolin, guitar and dobro), tight sibling harmonies and finely crafted original songs. Their unique sound incorporates their musical background of American bluegrass and old-time while also being influenced by English folklore.

‘Folie à deux’ is a shared psychosis where a delusion is transmitted from one person to another. In this production a woman is struggling to connect with her lover. He believes that the pylon outside their house has a special power. His delusion passes on to her and, as sparks fly, their madness takes hold. Songs are woven together for two singers, an acoustic harp and a specially created electro-magnetic harp in this modern folk tale performed against a backdrop of responsive light and sound. Part staged performance, part concept album, Folie à Deux is a lyrical and intense investigation into love and loneliness within a relationship. A collaboration between British composer Emily Hall, Icelandic lyricist Sjón who regularly works with Bjork and featuring Swedish jazz artist Sofia Jernberg (pictured below).

The Art of Fresco Painting: Antiquity to the 16th Century 1.30 – 4.30pm

£13 (no concessions)

This course provides an introduction to the art of fresco, from classical antiquity through medieval painting in Western Europe to Renaissance masterpieces. Style and technique, content and function will be considered by focusing on masterpieces such as the frescoes of Pompeii, Giotto’s works in Padua and Florence, Mantegna’s art in Mantua and Raphael’s Stanze in the Palace of the Vatican in Rome. Tutor: Dalila Castelijn 22 Box Office 01962 873603

Richard II brings into sharp focus the last two years of a turbulent twenty-two year reign which swung violently between the people’s adulation for God’s anointed ruler and their fear of a vicious, spiteful despot. The play begins in 1397. After being continually frustrated and humiliated by his powerful uncles and magnates who want to curb his power, Richard takes his revenge. We watch an increasingly desperate, deluded and frightened monarch literally fighting for his kingdom and his life. This tale has many parallels with what we see today in news from around the world. It is an emotionally powerful story very much for the twenty-first century.

Throughout 2015 The Great Waste project is running events and activities that aim to prevent waste and increase the levels of recycling in the Winchester District. England generates about 177 million tonnes of waste every year, costing businesses and households money as well as causing environmental damage. We want to move towards a ‘zero waste’ Winchester where we reduce, reuse and recycle all we can, and throw things away only as a last resort. The Great Waste is a project from Winchester City Council and Winchester Action on Climate Change.

Modern Life is Rubbish Recycling is as old as Earth. Three and a half billion years ago, tight recycling loops meant that life had enough nutrients to grow. Can the Circular Economy Work? A circular economy keeps resources in use for as long as possible, then recovers and regenerates materials at the end of their life. Can this really be made to work – even in the most challenging industrial sectors?

A play written and performed by students from the University of Winchester. Wasters; tackling the rubbish and recycling we all know about but would rather ignore. With a landfill of recycling facts we will set out the scale of our waste problem, and also some of the solutions. We will sweep away what you think you know about garbage, and brush you up on what’s really going on – from nuclear waste to dinosaur poo, from forest fires to birds on anti-depressants. A riotous romp through muck and debris – prepare to have your ideas of rubbish well and truly challenged. Ages 14+

Big Energy Saving Advice Stop wasting money on heating your home by getting some free help. As part of The Great Waste, you can get free, independent advice about insulation, renewable energy, draught-proofing, switching energy suppliers or grants you may be eligible from our experts.
