Once there was a Girl… and a Wolf. Scarlett leaves her tiny village behind and heads for the bright lights of the big city, but something follows her, something big and hungry. Could there be wolves in the city? She sees them everywhere but no-one else seems to notice; perhaps because they wear three piece suits and smoke cigars. Oh no these are not the wolves you find in the forest, these are very, very different and very, very dangerous. James doesn’t understand why he is so tired. He goes to bed early every night, but each morning he wakes up feeling as if he has spent the night-time running through the streets. James grew up in the big city. But now longs to be in the forest. He doesn’t know why but when the moon is full he feels different. Then, one day, Scarlett and James meet, and the wheels of fate are set in motion. Recommended for ages 5–105! John Pilkington Russia and Europe: What Next? 7.30pm

Sat 6 Feb £10

Passions are running high in Ukraine and the breakaway states of the Caucasus. Vladimir Putin’s adventures in Ukraine took the West by surprise. But John thinks in some ways they followed a pattern that goes back more than a century to the days of the ‘Great Game’. Since the Soviet Union’s breakup, Transnistria, Abkhazia and South Ossetia have become Russia’s ‘forgotten’ satellite states – unrecognised and unheard of by most outsiders. Now Donetsk and Luhansk have joined the list, and Russia has full control of Crimea. In 2015 John met people on both sides of these disputed borders, and promises a talk full of intrigue with one or two surprises. More at www.pilk.net

Their style is more eclectic than most, influenced by early 20th century American music, with the addition of ‘razor-sharp’ solos, great arrangements and original songs; they play their own brand of Western Swing, Blues, Gypsy Jazz and Country, or ‘North Eastern Swing’ as they’ve coined it. The songs are penned by Rob Heron, a crazy fool for country music and a full time dandycowboy. His songs are full of character, satire, and good old fashion hollerin’. The best way to experience Rob Heron and the Tea Pad Orchestra is at a live show!

Under 16s interested in attending these workshops – please email winchphoto@outlook.com before booking.

Digital SLR and Bridge Camera Introduction Wednesdays from 13 January The auto setting on your camera is a barrier between you and the imaginative photos you’d like to be taking, but turning that dial and discovering the power of your camera and creativity is surprisingly simple when shown in this hands-on course. By covering the basics of digital photography and composition, looking at aperture, exposure, depth of field, shutter speed and full manual settings, you will start enjoying your camera like never before and be shooting images just the way you want to. 26 Box Office 01962 873603

Adobe Photoshop Elements is the most popular software package for enthusiastic photographers. Both affordable and powerful, it unlocks a whole new level of creativity and puts you firmly in control of your photos. By the end of this course you will be able to crop images, fix wonky shots, adjust colours, lighten/darken parts of an image, create montages, restore old photos and apply special effects.

Wednesdays from 17 February When working with large numbers of images that need editing and filing, Lightroom is the best option. Using your own laptop with any version of Lightroom already installed, you will be guided through screen layout and customisable options, importing and backing-up images, batch processing, developing images through exposure, colour, crop and straightening controls as well as exporting images ready for print. You must provide your own laptop and software for this workshop.

A hands-on writing course with a difference – combining flash-writing with tapping into the subconscious to achieve a deeper awareness of hidden feelings, reactions, strategies and modes of behaviour. Using targeted, timed writing exercises, lecturer and writer Ilse Cornwall-Ross (MPhil) will guide you to arrive at a better understanding of hitherto unrecognised patterns in your decision making and behaviour. Research has shown that when we formulate reactions within ourselves in words, this process exercises a certain amount of control over our responses and interpretation of actions and emotions. Putting our feelings into words can have therapeutic effects and lead to a better understanding of how we function. This writing course is held in a friendly, supportive environment, but please note that counselling is not offered on this course.

Chantries and Chantry Chapels in Late Medieval England: The Case of Winchester Cathedral

Searching for my knights in shining armour: Queering the Middle Ages in scholarship and medievalism

Monday 25 January

Monday 29 February

Dr. Cindy Wood PhD, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Winchester

Karl Alvestad, PhD Candidate in History, University of Winchester

Chantries were the most popular religious foundations of later medieval Europe. These were masses endowed by their founder who expected these services to be performed for the benefit of their souls after death. The doctrine of Purgatory meant that some of the expected terrors could be mitigated by prayers and other pious works. Winchester Cathedral was a monastic foundation in the medieval period and contains the best group of chantry chapels in the country. These chapels will be discussed in their late medieval context, in relation to their founders (who diverted the prayers of the monks to their personal benefit) and also their location in the cathedral. This group are wonderful examples of craftsmanship of their age and will be explored by a large number of detailed photographs.

In this talk Karl will explore the modern Queering of the Middle Ages in scholarship and popular medievalism and will focus on how the normalisation of LGBT identities in western society in the last decades of the twentieth century has led to a search for evidence for LGBT lives throughout history. The lecture will explore how the LGBT liberation and claiming of the past have triggered a medievalist invention of the gay Middle Ages, best represented in popular culture by one of Game of Throne’s knight’s in shining armour Loras Tyrell.

The Human Animal City Monday 25 April Dr Kay Peggs, Professor of Sociology and Animal Studies, University of Winchester In the city or town human encounters with living animals often rest in walking with dogs, sightings of cats sitting in windows and encounters with birds who are treated as welcome visitors (such as blackbirds and robins) or unwelcome pests (such as gulls and pigeons). This talk explores spatial relationships between humans and animals and considers how humans make a distinction between places that are for animals and places that are not for animals (or are not for specific animals). What are the relationships between humans and animals in the city and how are animals included and excluded from different places?

Gender, Nation and Political Power in Russia: Looking beyond the Headlines Monday 21 March Dr Ulrike Ziemer Dr Ziemer’s talk will give us a fascinating insight into modern Russia society.
