Small Dean Works

Over the Christmas and New Year holidays HS2 completed the “sheet piling” at Small Dean, which will protect the Chiltern Line when the excavation starts for the foundations of the viaduct over the A413. There was some overnight noise, but this was considered better than the community impact of yet more weekend closures of the railway line throughout January and February.

progressing. This is expected to limit the number of local “Large Goods Vehicle” concrete lorry movements to a peak of (only) 536 per day over a four-year period, compared to delivering pre-mixed concrete from elsewhere.

That said, we remain focussed on trying to limit the impact of the line prior to the design getting approved by Bucks Council, and are now working closely with the Parish Council to see if our proposals for a minor redesign of the North Cutting can be adopted to save over 400 homes in North Wendover from night time noise over the World Health Organisation limit.

considered by the Parliamentary Transport Select Committee who are understood to be concerned about the worsening business case for HS2. However, we doubt if their recent consultation will result in the cancellation of the entire project.

There are a small number of projects being successfully received for Wendover & surrounding villages. We encourage all groups to submit their pitches for mitigation funding. We have been supporting individuals who have been badly affected by HS2 plans, with some success. HS2 have reissued the Homeowner Payments Scheme, which now provides grants of up to £24,000 for people living within 300 metres of the line www.hs2.org.uk/ documents/homeowner-payment/.

We understand that demolition of the empty cottages in Ellesborough Road is now expected in April, but preparatory works including disconnection of the Gas and Electricity supplies have been done. Noise and Vibration monitors are also being installed in adjacent properties, which should enable us to see if the works are being done in accordance with HS2’s “Code of Construction Practice”. Princess Mary Gate Helicopter Park Editor's Note: This is an excerpt of the statement from Wendover Parish Council on 14 January 2022. The full statement can be found at https://wendovernews.co.uk/news/an-update-from-wendoverparish-council-regarding-the-helicopter-park-in-princess-mary-gate/ As Chair of Wendover Parish Council (WPC), I am giving an update on the background to the removal of the Helicopter Park. The park is owned by the Ministry of Defence, not owned or maintained by the Parish Council. As such WPC have no jurisdiction over what happens to the equipment or facilities as it is essentially private property. The Helicopter Park at the Princess Mary Gate development has been subject to vandalism for some time. Initially an idea to install CCTV was put to RAF Halton by the Council, in a bid to stop the damage. The RAF reported that CCTV could not be installed on MOD land. The Royal Air Force Police stepped up their patrols in an effort to prevent further damage. Over the last year the park has been fenced off at times, when vandalism has caused the park to be unsafe. In November, the Council received notification from the RAF Halton Wing Commander stating that the repair cost for the past couple of years was already £8,000. They made the decision that any further damage would result in the removal of equipment that would ultimately lead to the closure of the park. The residents on the estate were informed in November. Wendover Parish Council HS2 update The WPC Working group have a set of alternative mitigations to try and alleviate the noise issues for the area North of Wendover, as noted last month, because the mined tunnel is currently out of favour with the HS2 minister etc. These include extending the green tunnel by 300m to the north which would potentially solve the noise issue for over 400 homes (it does not help any water problems). This would be the best of our options after a mined tunnel. Alternatively, an option is extending the green tunnel canopy for 350m. This would help, but would allow some noise to be emitted from the sides, beneath the canopy, so is a secondbest option. Lastly would be to reinstate the external noise barriers at 6m along the length of the 300m. This option could be built after the rest of the project has been completed, whereas the others would need to be in the Schedule 17(3) planning applications, currently due in March 2022.

to local and national MPs, and the various Transport and Rail Infrastructure personnel. HS2 and EKFB are also on the list. We are hoping that one of these alternatives will gain traction within Government and that will encourage HS2 to do something! Meanwhile, HS2 are continuing with their groundworks. The bridge over the Chiltern Line has been removed and sheet piling next to the line has been completed, stopping the banks falling onto it. The next step is to protect a water main on the A413 which requires temporary concrete barriers to protect the workforce. These will be put out on Fridays from 8pm until 6am on Mondays. This requires a full road closure over the weekend, followed by 24hr, two-way traffic lights in that area. Dates are 21 January – 7 February at the moment. Wendover Bowls Club

The end of December and the start of the New Year was a very quiet time. We held an open day in early January which was a success, and eight people turned up to try out indoor bowls. Now eight might not sound very many, but it meant that they all received personal tuition and enjoyed it. Several said they would be back for more, and another open session will be arranged.

It’s the most unusual behaviour for a bird normally at pains to avoid contact. He doesn't like his photo taken either. The curious case of Cedric

If you've walked the Ridgeway you can't have failed to notice a feathery rustle in the bushes as you go down Hogtrough Lane - a beak, a beady eye and a dash of brilliant colour announces Cedric the Pheasant running alongside in his field before he pops out at the gate to confront anyone, car bike or walker for daring to venture near his breeding harem.

Depending on his mood, and your level of alarm, he'll escort you in close formation for a way but if you decide to confront him he'll display an extraordinary level of derring-do as he'll fly harmlessly at you.

The prize was awarded at the National Small / Medium Enterprise Awards in December. As a multi-award-winning care provider with over 30 years’ experience, Ashridge Home Care has the capacity to provide skilled, conscientious, and friendly carers to deliver safe one-to-one care to vulnerable and elderly individuals in the comfort of their own homes. The Chilterns MS Centre’s Pop-Up Art Weekend is back on 5 & 6 March. The event is the biggest fundraiser of the year for the charity, which, like many small charities, had much of its income reduced due to the pandemic and the lack of fundraising events it could run. So there is a lot of excitement about the return of the Art Weekend from the staff and volunteers at the Centre, as well as the artists who will be exhibiting. The event is free to attend and visitors will be welcomed by a range of work, from paintings, photographs, ceramics, jewellery, sculptures and much more. The diversity and quality of work being exhibited this year is fantastic. With live demonstrations from some of the artists, there will be plenty to see and do.

live life to the full. This year the art weekend is being sponsored by The Clare Foundation, a charity that brings together key stakeholders from businesses and charities to facilitate and create positive change across society in Buckinghamshire. Stella Kubale, Head of Fundraising at the Chilterns MS Centre, said: “We have been amazed at the support we have received over the past 2 years, but we are all looking forward to running one of our best events again. It not only gives people the chance to take in some wonderful art, but allows the local community to find out a bit more about us too. We are so grateful to The Clare Foundation for supporting this year’s event and are delighted to have them on board.”

To date over £132,000 has been raised by this event alone. During the pandemic the event went “The Clare Foundation are thrilled to be funding virtual but now plans are in full swing to make this this fantastic event and supporting the Chiltern MS Centre who do such great work in the the best Pop-Up Art Weekend ever. community supporting those in need. Millions of households saw their energy bills rise by 12% in October last year and with further rises predicted this April, by as much as another 50%, perhaps now is the time to look at how to improve the energy efficiency of our homes and reduce our carbon footprint at the same time. A recent blog by the Energy Saving Trust has identified 10 changes that everyone can make immediately resulting in an annual saving of around £248 for a typical three-bedroom house. A study by the Installation Institute has revealed that insulating 4 million homes is the equivalent to the carbon dioxide removed from the atmosphere by planting 667 million acres of trees – 10 times the area of the UK.

If you are considering insulating your home but don’t know where to start, then why not consider a leaky home survey? For £20 you will receive a thermographic image of where your home is losing heat as well as advice on various solutions. Visit https://buckscommunityenergy. org/leaky-homes-roadshow for more information. For example, if you install up to 270mm insulation in your loft at an approximate cost of £300 you could save around £165 a year on energy bills and reduce your carbon footprint by around 580kg a year. We are fortunate in having Clare De Carle, Chair of Bucks Gardens, who will speak about Maud Grieve, a herbalist who lived in Bucks and who had a large herb garden. With WW1 she expanded it into a plant nursery, supplying the herbs which were badly needed as medicines at the front, using the potential benefits of plants such as Henbane, Foxglove and Deadly Nightshade which would have also grown wild. We will learn a lot. Visitors are welcome at our meeting at 2.30pm on 3 February at St Anne’s Hall, price £3.00. Neville Morton

RAF Halton RAF Halton Base Closure

BBC South featured a segment on a change to the proposed closure date of RAF Halton on its broadcast the evening of 13 January. Wendover News has had the following statement from RAF Halton regarding the broadcast: “The MOD remains committed to the closure of RAF Halton as announced in 2016. The site will be sold on a phased basis from 2025 and its current staff and personnel will be relocated to new facilities. "It is standard process for investments of this kind to be reviewed and challenged during survey and design stages.”

Veterans Join Housing Cash Appeal Lonely veterans hoping to move to a retirement community so they can relive the camaraderie of their RAF days are asking Buckinghamshire residents for help. The men and women are appealing for donations to fund the completion of a charity’s housing project so they can settle together.

The Royal Air Forces Association, which supports serving and ex-RAF personnel and their families, is converting its former Rothbury House Hotel in Northumberland into 26 retirement apartments. An initial appeal led to half of the £500,000 transformation cost being raised from Association members and grant-making trusts, allowing building work to start. Now veterans are asking members of the public to join in to get the project over the line. To donate to the appeal, please visit buildingfutures.rafa.org.uk or call 0800 018 2361.

Local Faces: Nigel and Margaret Copelin Both Margaret and Nigel came to Wendover for work related reasons, from small villages north of Aylesbury, and each thought Wendover a thriving big town: a High Street abuzz with local shoppers having most of their needs easily met.
