Luke's RAM Scholarship

Royal College of Music Royal Visit

In May, HRH The Prince of Wales presented Head of Piano John Byrne and Old Wellensian Ashby Mayes with major awards conferred by the Royal College of Music (RCM). The presentation was made at an awards ceremony attended by influential people from across the music world, including Wells Director of Music Alex Laing.

Ashby Mayes won the prestigious President’s Award - given each year to honour a pupil for their outstanding work in the community - while Professor Byrne was presented with a Fellowship of the Royal College of Music (FRCM). Professor Byrne’s citation read: “John Byrne has been a professor at the RCM since 1996 and his many prize-winning pupils have established him as one of the leading piano teachers of his generation with an international profile." Congratulations to them both.

Luke is awarded Royal Academy of Music Scholarship

Congratulations to Luke McCarthy (Upper Sixth), who has been awarded one of just two available scholarships to study at the Royal Academy of Music (RAM), funded by Sony Music UK’s Social Justice Fund. The UK arm of the Sony Music Group’s Global Social Justice Fund was created in 2020 in order to support equal rights, social justice and anti-racist initiatives, thereby addressing structural inequality for lasting change. Launched in partnership with pianist, composer and producer (and RAM alumnus) Alexis Ffrench, the scholarship is for black UK or international undergraduate pupils. As a beneficiary, Luke will receive financial support for each year of his undergraduate course. Jayne Obradovic, Head of Percussion, said; “We are extremely proud of Luke’s success, enabling him to dive into his studies and career headfirst!”
