The Urban Food System

Continuous Productive Urban Landscape [CPUL] [C] connects open space : parcels of inner-urban open land, inner-urban land to a new infrastructure, inner-urban land to the rural land

[P] uses open space : through placing Urban Agriculture environmentally, economically and socially productive

[U] happens 'inside' : the greenbelt stays green, greenfield sites stay green, brownfield sites become green

[L] is landscape : with spatial and visual qualities of the rural and the urban

The CPUL City

Urban Landscape : Ecological Intensification as a measure of densification

Urban Agriculture : personal and seasonal productive urban landscape

The CPUL City

Productive Networks :

Essential Infrastructure for daily use in the city CPUL could transport and supply: primaries f.e. air, wildlife people compliment and alternative to road and car traffic spatial coherence f.e. the long view, the closeness to nature cultural coherence f.e. the continuous offer to encounter, communicate food stuff production – retail – consumption - recycling

Why CPUL?

Ecological Footprint : environmental impact of industrialised food production

Why CPUL?

for a typical English household

Ecological Footprint : CO2 emission and current urban lifestyles

Why CPUL?

Current Urban Lifestyles : food deserts

SANDWELL MAPS - Measuring access to healthy food Roads within 500m of an address containing 1 or more shops selling some food

Roads within 500m of an address containing 1 or more shops where food is reasonably priced and which sell at least 8 kinds of fresh fruit and vegetables

images and data: The Sandwell Study - University of Warwick and Sandwell Health Action Zone - 2001

Why CPUL?

Local Economies : income and employment through urban food production

Every £10 spend with a local food initiative in the UK is worth £25 for the local area

image: Bohn&Viljoen . 2008 / data: NEF London . 2007

compared

with just £14 when the same amount is spent in a supermarket.

Why CPUL?

Ecological Intensification

Growing a CPUL City

Enabling CPUL City : What is unique? What is needed?

U+D

+ infrastructural and/or system projects - such as CPUL need parallel top-down and bottom-up initiative(s)

Vis

+ qualities of urban agriculture need visualising – drawn and built - to influence decision makers and raise public desire

IUC

+ an Inventory of Urban Capacity is necessary, esp. of spatial, stakeholder and managerial capacities

R

+ constant research, development and dissemination will consolidate the CPUL concept
