ONCE UPON A TIME... ES WAR EINMAL... A
Count by the name of Per Brahe founded Kristinestad in 1649 after having found the location ideal for commerce and, moreover, his goal of boosting trade across the Gulf of Bothnia. The picturesque wooden house milieu of Kristinestad’s town centre, dating back to the 18th and 19th centu ries, is home to a vibrant urban culture and a market tradition that has survived for 350 years. Outside the old town, you will find rural farmland and village communities with typical Ostroboth nian houses, each one more beautiful than the next. The Bötombergen area is home to Varggrottan (Wolf Cave), which is the oldest known human dwelling found in the Nordic countries.
For those interested in discovering Kristinestad’s rich past, there are sever al museums to visit around town. The museums have workshops, guided tours and special programme targeted at chil dren. Also worth visiting in Kristinestad are its unique churches.

er Brahe gegründete die Stadt Kristinestad im Jahr 1649 an einer günstige Handelsstelle am Bottnischen Meerbusen, um den Handel zu stärken. Die Innenstadt von Kristinestad ist ein malerisches Milieu aus Holzhäusern des 18. und 19. Jahrhunderts. Die Stadt wird von einer starken Kultur und einer vor 350 Jahren begründeten Markttradition beherrscht. Die alte Stadt ist von einer herrlichen Landschaft mit wunder schönen Bauernhäusern und Dorfland schaften umgeben. Am Bötombergen (übers. Heiligenberg) können Sie den ältesten bewohnten Wohnort in den nordischen Ländern, die Varggrottan (übers. Wolfshöhle), besuchen. Located by Lake Storträsket, Carlsro is a museum housed in a former luxury villa and summer hotel. Among the museum’s diverse range of exhibits are collections of dental instruments and equipment, goldsmith’s tools, and photographs.
Located in Kristinestad‘s historic downtown with its wooden houses, this former merchant‘s home now displays beautiful furniture, decorative items and everyday objects, the oldest of which date from the 17th century.
Das am Suurjärvi gelegene Carlsro wurde als Adelsvilla und Sommer hotel verwendet. Von den vielseitigen Sammlungen möchten wir besonders die Zahnarzt- und Goldschmiedwerk zeuge hervorheben.
Das Lebell‘sche Kaufmannshaus ist im Holzhaus-Zentrum der Stadt. In seinen Kollektionen befinden sich großartige Möbel sowie Einrichtungund Haushaltsgegenstände aus dem 17. Jahrhundert.

A large open-air museum located close to the sea, Kilen is home to unique vegetation and some thirty buildings that introduce visitors to what peasant life was like in the past. There is a restaurant and a hostel in the area, and the museum also serves as a cultural centre that hosts a wide array of events and courses during the summer.

Im Seefahrtmuseum lernt man Traditio nen und etwa 2.000 Gegenstände des Schiffsbaus und der Seefahrt kennen.
Das eine einzigartige Pflanzenwelt aufweisende große Freiluftmuseum in Meeresnähe beherbergt ca. 30 Gebäude. Diese geben einen Überblick über die alte Bauernkultur. Das Heimatmuseum, das über ein Restaurant und ein Hostel verfügt, ist im Sommer ein beliebtes Kulturzentrum mit vielen Veranstaltungen und Kursen.

ypical of a Cittaslow town, the people in Kristinestad feel a strong sense of community. Thanks to local associations and communal activity, the town has a rich cultural scene: a gallery run by Art Society Spectra, exhibitions held at the Felén House, and the multipurpose facilities and many events at culture house Dux are just some of the examples of places to visit for the entire family. Popular cultural happenings include the Open Gates event in June, which offers people a peek into the gardens of private homes and the sentimental Romantic Week in August. And don‘t forget to check out the local produce and boutiques. It should be well worth your while – this seaside town did, after all, start life as a centre of commerce.

ie auch in anderen CittaslowStädten herrscht ein starkes Gemeinschaftsgefühl zwischen den Einwohnern. Dieses bedeutet ein reichhaltiges Kulturprogramm durch die Vereine und Bewohner. Zum Beispiel die Galerie des Kunstvereins Spectra, die Ausstellungen im Haus Felèn und die Mehrzweckräume und Events im Haus Dux bieten viel Spaß für die ganze Familie. Beliebte Kultur-Events sind die Tage der Offenen Türe im Juni und die stimmungsvolle Romantikwoche im August. Und vergessen wir nicht, dass die Hafenstadt ursprünglich als Handelsstadt gegründet wurde, so sind die örtlichen Läden mit verschiedenen Produkten wirklich ein Besuch wert.

rom the seaside to the forested areas, the diverse natural surround ings in Kristinestad are like nature‘s own adventure park: walk along the foot paths, go hiking on the magnificent nature trails or hop on a rental bike and head out along a stone bridge, the longest one of its kind in the Nordic countries. You can also go birdwatching at the Sideby bird tower in hopes of rare sightings, stop by at the guest harbour or admire the open sea from the cliffs of Kanonviken. Seaside fun awaits on the town‘s many beaches, with the open-air sea water pool and Sand banken, next to Bockholmen Camping, being the quickest places to reach from the town centre. Another animal you‘re likely to come across when visiting Kristinestad is the hedgehog, although they mostly only come out when it gets dark or late at night. So remember to keep your eyes open for hedgehogs, and the cute “Hedgehogs Crossing” signs. he Olden Day Market, Summer Market, Kyndelsmässomarknaden (Winter Market) and Mikaelimarknaden (Autumn Market) – Kristinestad lives up to its reputation as a market town by hosting markets throughout the year, each of them an authentic experience. In June, the popular Öppna Portar – Open Gates takes over the town centre, leaving the gates of the wooden houses open and inviting visitors into the courtyards. Visitors are also treated to music, theatre, exhibitions, flea markets and cafés set up in the courtyards. Other events that foster community spirit include the traditional Village Days, the Easter event for little witches, the formal opening of the Christmas season and the Romance Week.

Die Gemeinsamkeit unterstützen auch die traditionellen Dorftage, Osterveranstaltung, Weihnachtseröffnung und die romantische Woche.
