The University of South Carolina Aiken was chartered in 1961 after entering into an agreement with the University of South Carolina to establish a two-year center in Aiken. The Aiken Center opened its doors in September 1961 to 139 students. Temporarily housed in Banksia, a renovated mansion in Aiken, the Center consisted of three full-time faculty members (one of whom served as Director of the Center). In 1968, the Center underwent an institutional self-study and was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools as a branch of the University of South Carolina and as a junior college. The first associate degrees were awarded in June 1968. The campus of USC Aiken moved from Banksia to its present site in 1972 and physical changes began to occur rapidly. At first, the permanent campus consisted of 100 acres and one multipurpose building which housed all university operations. A library was completed in 1975, and additional land was donated that increased the campus to 144 acres. In October 1977, the Student Activities Center was opened. A classroom building was occupied in 1978, and one year later, an auxiliary services building was added. An apartment complex for students, Pacer Downs, was ready

for occupancy in the fall of 1984. More construction additions to the campus included completion of the Etherredge Center, Ruth Patrick Science Education Center, the Business and Education Building, and the Alan B. Miller Nursing Building. Additional land was acquired increasing the campus to 400 acres. Academic and organizational changes also occurred rapidly. The faculty formalized its organizational structure and redefined its role in the governance of the institution in 1974-75. Also, the students reorganized their governing body and more precisely defined their role on campus; the administration and staff structures were overhauled and expanded to meet the demands of the growing academic programs. When the full-time equivalent student enrollment reached 1,066 in the fall of 1975, the USC Aiken campus was permitted to plan for senior level courses and to create a number of baccalaureate degree programs. In that same year, USCA received approval as a four-year branch campus by the Board of Trustees of the University of South Carolina, and USCA was designated a Recognized Candidate for Senior College Accreditation. In September 1976, the Board of Trustees granted academic autonomy to the Aiken Campus. The first bachelorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s degrees were granted in May 1977, and USCA became a fully

accredited senior college. Presently, the college community is comprised of more than 3,200 students, over 100 full-time faculty, approximately 110 staff members, and 28 administrators. USCA awards bachelor’s degrees in more than 20 major areas of study, master’s degrees in two areas, and offers a varied program of continuing education courses for the wider community. Today USC Aiken offers students a liberal education designed to develop an understanding of human experience which will equip them for life in a free society. To accomplish this, the University provides students with an opportunity to discover learning processes which enable them to grow personally and socially. It promotes students’ interaction within a community of active scholars and artists, and it encourages students to use the knowledge which they gain to deal with the problems of a rapidly changing world.

Team Preview Coming off a 12-10 campaign that saw USC Aiken reach the NCAA Tournament, head coach Steve Dahm expects an even bigger year with the abundance of talent returning to this year’s men’s tennis squad. Mathias Degardin was second on the team in 2016 with 14 singles wins. Additionally, he accounted for 11 doubles victories. “Mathias has been a rock at No. 3 the past few seasons,” Dahm said. “He will fit into the line-up about the same spot and will continue to dominate that position.” Jaime Gusano saw time in three singles matches and was part of four doubles contests in 2016. “Jaime is very talented,” Dahm stated. “He needs a little more match experience. One big win for him will boost his confidence level so he can play up to his potential.” Hunter Lathrop garnered seven singles wins in his first year at USC Aiken while also being part of 12 doubles victories. “Hunter has a big serve,” Dahm said. “He is a good doubles player. Hunter needs to play singles as aggressively as he plays his doubles matches.” Julien Tan was a second-team all-conference honoree last year in singles and doubles action. “Julien, when motivated and healthy, is one of the best on our team and possibly the country,” Dahm stated. “We need to keep him physically healthy and ready for the next match. If we do that, he could have an outstanding season.” Dahm added four newcomers to the mix in Wojciech Adamek, Alvaro Garcia Gil, Antonio Sabugueiro and Tales Silva. “Wojciech brings a lot of experience in national tournaments,” Dahm said. “He is a good doubles player that has good hands. He should see time in the middle of the line-up. “Alvaro is a really tough baseliner,” Dahm stated. “He will be battling for a singles spot this year. “Antonio is very tenacious,” Dahm continued. “He is a fighter. Antonio will play near the top of the line-up. He’s motivated and is a hard worker. “Tales is very talented,” Dahm said. “He has a lot of raquet speed and has the potential to improve more than anyone I’ve had the past five years.” The Pacers open the season Feb. 1 against NAIA national power Georgia Gwinnett. The squad stays on the road for a contest at region foe Newberry (Feb. 5) before opening its home slate Feb. 9 against Belmont Abbey. After a quick trip to Due West, S.C., for a match at Erskine (Feb. 13), USC Aiken returns home for four straight contests, including a pair of PBC matches. Dahm’s team hosts Auburn-Montgomery (Feb. 18), Limestone (Feb. 22), Armstrong State (Feb. 24) and Flagler (Feb. 26). The team gets a few days to recover from the tough stretch before heading to North Georgia (March 3) and Young Harris (March 4). The five-match road stretch continues after a lengthy break as USC Aiken travels to Lander (March

18), Augusta (March 21) and Benedict (March 23). Dahm’s squad hosts BYU-Hawaii for the first time in school history (March 29). Two days later, the team returns to PBC play with a home match against Columbus State. The Pacers have four matches in April, beginning with Georgia Southwestern (Apr. 1). The following day USC Aiken takes on Georgia College. USC Aiken closes out league play with a contest against Francis Marion Apr. 9 before wrapping up the regular season with a non-conference match against Anderson. All four matches in April will be played at home. “We open with a very tough opponent,” Dahm said. “Our schedule is tough with the likes of Anderson, Auburn-Montgomery, Newberry and BYUHawaii is usually in the top five nationally. “We will aim to make the regionals again and advance,” Dahm stated. “It will come down to inches this year.” The Pacers will look to increase their NCAA Tournament chances at the PBC Tournament Apr. 20-21 in Florence, S.C.

In 2010, USC Aiken once again had two players chosen to the ITA All-America team as Gregory Andrade and Juan Xavier Ponce were named All-Americans by virtue of ending the year ranked ninth nationally. A native of Kenmore, N.Y., Dahm came to USC Aiken from Division I Furman University where he served as the assistant men’s coach for two seasons. Dahm has a strong foundation of coaching experience. He has spent time at the Van der Meer Tennis Center, the University of Rochester and the Country Club of Buffalo, where he was the head tennis professional for five summers. In collegiate play, Dahm was the number one singles and doubles player at the University of Buffalo. He was selected to the MidAmerican All-Conference team as well as the First-Team All-Star squad. While attending UB, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology.

2016 Review For the second time in three years, the University of South Carolina Aiken men’s tennis team put together a season worthy enough of securing a berth in the NCAA Tournament and finished with a No. 42 national ranking. Head coach Steve Dahm’s team recorded an overall mark of 12-10, including a 12-9 record against Division II foes. After opening its season with a loss to Georgia Gwinnett, USC Aiken rattled off four straight victories. On Feb. 7, the team hosted Coker and cruised to a 6-3 victory. The squad led 2-1 after doubles play and pushed its lead to 4-1 after wins by Julien Tan and Ettore Damiani. Victories by Clement Raymond and Alejandro Andino secured the team’s first win of the season. The solid singles play was just an opening act of what was to come for the Pacers. Dahm’s team rolled past Morehouse (9-0) and Anderson (8-1) despite playing on the road. USC Aiken returned home for Peach Belt Conference play against Georgia Southwestern. The Pacers handled the Hurricanes rather easily, posting an 8-1 score. The squad was never challenged, opening a 3-0 lead after doubles play and never looked back. After a home loss to Columbus State, the team rebounded with a 9-0 blanking at Limestone. Doubles play was no closer than 8-6 while only two singles matches were sent to three sets. USC Aiken returned home to square off against a solid Francis Marion squad. Despite having a tough time against the Patriots in the past, the Pacers jumped out to a 3-0 lead and never looked back. No doubles match was closer than 8-6 and Dahm’s team was resilient in three singles matches that went to a third set, winning each contest. As the calendar turned to March, USC Aiken continued its inspired play by going 4-2 in the month. After falling 8-1 at Flagler, the team quickly rebounded to blank Benedict on the road, 9-0. The squad hosted rival Augusta and caged the Jaguars by a 6-3 score. The Pacers won all three doubles matches and split the singles competitions en route to the victory. A loss at Lander did not set the team back for long. USC Aiken regrouped and won the next three matches by scores of 9-0, 9-0 and 8-1 over Alabama-Huntsville, Belmont Abbey and Young Harris. Playing shorthanded, the team lost at Armstrong State,

but defeated Pfeiffer in a home region contest by a 7-2 score. Despite dropping its final two road matches of the year, USC Aiken registered the No. 8 seed in the PBC Tournament. The team was eliminated from the league tournament, but earned a berth to the NCAA Tournament. There, the squad put up a tough fight but lost to Columbus State. For the season, Damiani recorded a 15-3 singles mark while Mathias Degardin quietly had a 14-4 record. Tan notched 11 wins while Andino accounted for 10. In d oubles action, Damiani and Tan had 13 wins apiece while Andino notched 12. Degardin and Raymond totaled 11 wins each. For their hard work, Damiani and Tan garnered all-PBC accolades. Damiani finished his career at No. 2 for singles wins while Andino now holds the most wins in a career at the No. 6 singles spot. Dahm’s roster loses a pair of seniors to graduation, but he returns a strong cast in 2017. Should the team come together with the tenacity of the 2016 squad, it will find a way back into the PBC Tournament and the NCAA Tournament.
