The University of South Carolina Aiken was chartered in 1961 after entering into an agreement with the University of South Carolina to establish a two-year center in Aiken. The Aiken Center opened its doors in September 1961 to 139 students. Temporarily housed in Banksia, a renovated mansion in Aiken, the Center consisted of three full-time faculty members (one of whom served as Director of the Center). In 1968, the Center underwent an institutional self-study and was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools as a branch of the University of South Carolina and as a junior college. The first associate degrees were awarded in June 1968. The campus of USC Aiken moved from Banksia to its present site in 1972 and physical changes began to occur rapidly. At first, the permanent campus consisted of 100 acres and one multipurpose building which housed all university operations. A library was completed in 1975, and additional land was donated that increased the campus to 144 acres. In October 1977, the Student Activities Center was opened. A classroom building was occupied in 1978, and one year later, an auxiliary services building was added. An apartment complex for students, Pacer Downs, was ready

for occupancy in the fall of 1984. More construction additions to the campus included completion of the Etherredge Center, Ruth Patrick Science Education Center, the Business and Education Building, and the Alan B. Miller Nursing Building. Additional land was acquired increasing the campus to 400 acres. Academic and organizational changes also occurred rapidly. The faculty formalized its organizational structure and redefined its role in the governance of the institution in 1974-75. Also, the students reorganized their governing body and more precisely defined their role on campus; the administration and staff structures were overhauled and expanded to meet the demands of the growing academic programs. When the full-time equivalent student enrollment reached 1,066 in the fall of 1975, the USC Aiken campus was permitted to plan for senior level courses and to create a number of baccalaureate degree programs. In that same year, USCA received approval as a four-year branch campus by the Board of Trustees of the University of South Carolina, and USCA was designated a Recognized Candidate for Senior College Accreditation. In September 1976, the Board of Trustees granted academic autonomy to the Aiken Campus. The first bachelor’s degrees were granted in May 1977, and USCA became a fully
accredited senior college. Presently, the college community is comprised of more than 3,200 students, over 100 full-time faculty, approximately 110 staff members, and 28 administrators. USCA awards bachelor’s degrees in more than 20 major areas of study, master’s degrees in two areas, and offers a varied program of continuing education courses for the wider community. Today USC Aiken offers students a liberal education designed to develop an understanding of human experience which will equip them for life in a free society. To accomplish this, the University provides students with an opportunity to discover learning processes which enable them to grow personally and socially. It promotes students’ interaction within a community of active scholars and artists, and it encourages students to use the knowledge which they gain to deal with the problems of a rapidly changing world.

Team Preview With a young but experienced team, the University of South Carolina Aiken golf program has its sights set high during the 2016-17 season. Under the guidance of head coach Michael Carlisle, the Pacers will look to return to the top of the Peach Belt Conference, NCAA Southeast Region and the No. 1 position in Division II. Led by a pair of All-Americans in Johnson Holliday and Axel Ostensson, the team is brimming with talent and experience despite having only one senior on the squad. The Pacers carry a preseason No. 8 nationally and are once again the top preseason team in the PBC per the NCAA Poll. Jay Jasmin is the lone senior on the team. The Aiken, S.C., native has played throughout his entire life but walked onto the team before the fall semester started. Holliday, a redshirt-junior, picked up all-conference honors last year and was an honorable mention All-America selection as a freshman. He registered a top-five finish and a pair of top-10 performances a season ago.

Ostensson garnered All-America honors as a freshman and all-conference accolades as a sophomore. He tallied an eighth-place finish at the NCAA South/Southeast Regional Championship. Newcomer Michael Hocker is a transfer from Liberty. The junior had a 75.67 stroke average as a sophomore. During his rookie season, Hocker competed in seven tournaments, earning a seventh-place finish at the Keith Hill Invitational. Redshirt-sophomore Samuel Schiff played in 10 tournaments a season ago, notching a 75.4 stroke average. He posted a season-low round of 70. Schiff wrapped up his best finish with a one-over par, 217, at the Saint Leo Invitational. Sophomore Wick Andrews returns to the team after being away for two years. As a freshman in 2013-14, he did not compete while on the team. Coming out of A.C. Flora H.S., Andrews led the team to four straight state titles and was the MVP.
Sophomore Felix Asper played in two events last season. He finished the year with a 77.3 stroke average, but notched a low-round of 70. Asper’s best finish came at the Camden Collegiate, where he took home 40th place. Sophomore August Lindvall earned PBC Freshman of the Year honors a season ago. He competed in all 12 events, tallying a 74.5 stroke average. Lindvall’s best round of the season was a 68. He accounted for multiple top-20 finishes, with his best coming at the PBC Championship. Freshman Dan Sheehan guided his team to the InterCollegiate Tour National Championship in 2014. He helped lead his squad to a pair of Southwest Region titles and a South Region championship. Sheehan also represented England schools vs. Wales in 2015.
Carlisle’s team returns to the Firestone Invitational Oct. 3-4 prior to wrapping up the fall slate Oct. 22-23 at the Camden Collegiate. In 2017, USC Aiken kicks off the next portion of the schedule at the Newberry Invitational Feb. 20-21 at Kiawah Island. The Pacers stay in the state for the next three tournaments as they play at the Wexford Plantation Invitational (Feb. 27-28) before hosting the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate (March 6-7). The Pacers take part in the ever-tough Bobcat Invitational March 20-21 before embarking at the three-day event hosted by Furman (March 24-26). The team wraps up the regular season Apr. 1-2 at the Augusta 3M Invitational prior to the PBC Championship, which will be hosted by Flagler Apr. 14-16.

The Coach Michael Carlisle Head Coach Michael Carlisle is a self-described “late bloomer”. Maybe that would explain the patience the USC Aiken head golf coach has exhibited over the past 26 years. That patience has paid off and then some as Carlisle was inducted into the Golf Coaches Association of America Hall of Fame in December of 2010. In 13 seasons prior to 2003-04, Carlisle had guided the Pacers to three NCAA Division II national runners-up and four more fifthplace finishes. But in 2003-04, Carlisle’s cast of one senior, three sophomores, and a freshman, after not winning a tournament all season, “bloomed” at the right time capturing the program’s third-straight NCAA Southeast Region crown and winning the school’s first-ever NCAA Championship. For his efforts, Carlisle was named the Eaton GolfPride NCAA Division II National Coach of the Year. So what does one do for an encore in 2004-05? How about winning a second consecutive NCAA Title, and dominating the rest of the regular season and postseason along the way. In 2004-05, USC Aiken put together the most dominating season in the history of Division II men’s golf, winning 11 of 13 tournaments. And unlike in 2003-04, they did not enter the NCAA Championship as a dark horse. The Pacers won the 2005 Peach Belt Conference Championship as well as their fourthstraight NCAA Southeast Region crown. The 2005-06 season brought a third-straight NCAA Championship, a fifth consecutive NCAA Southeast Region title, and a seventh Peach Belt Conference crown.
En route to winning 10 of 13 tournaments in 2005-06, Carlisle had successfully established the USC Aiken program as a dynasty. Only one team in the previous 44 years of Division II men’s golf had won three-straight NCAA titles. If you ask the modest coach, he will boast only of the successful student-athletes that have been through the program. However, it does not take much time spent in his office, looking around at the plethora of honors and accolades to determine Carlisle is among the most decorated in Division II golf. A seven-time Peach Belt Conference Coach of the Year, Carlisle has been named the NCAA Division II National Coach of the Year in 2004, 2005 and 2006. Carlisle was again named the Peach Belt Conference Coach of the Year for the 2012-13 season to add to his trophy case. He has led the program to 10 PBC championships in 25 seasons in the league, including a three-peat in 1995-97 and back-to-back crowns in 2002-03, 2005-06 and 2013-14. Most recently, the Pacers claimed the 2014 Peach Belt Conference title behind Brandon Robinson-Thompson’s individual medalist honors in Pine Mountain, Ga. The five-time NCAA Southeast Region champions have made 24 trips in the last 25 years to the NCAA Tournament, advancing to the National Championship Tournament 19 times. His career winning percentage in 26 NCAA seasons at USCA is .726 with five seasons of better than .900 and eight years of .800 or higher.

During the last 26 seasons while playing a full complement of tournaments largely against top caliber Division I competition, Carlisle’s teams have captured 83 titles for an average of 3.3 per year. This includes an amazing stretch of 23 of 28 events from the end of 2003-04 through 2005-06. USC Aiken has also become a fixture atop the GCAA Top-25 and the Golfstat top-10 polls. An eight-time NCAA District or Region Coach of the Year (1995-99, 2002, 2004, 2006), Carlisle has coached 50 NCAA AllAmericans, 10 All-Academic selections, two NCAA Players of the Year, one NCAA Freshman of the Year, one Elite 89 winner, nine PBC Players of the Year and 49 All-Conference selections.
States Amateur Championship. Carlisle stays active in the Aiken community including his work with the Junior Golf Association. Carlisle was honored in June of 2009 with the Thomas Hitchcock and William C. Whitney Award at the Players Dinner for the 34th Palmetto Amateur Tournament. Carlisle was the first recipient of the award. The award recognizes an individual who has made significant contributions to the game of golf in the Aiken area. Carlisle and wife, Patricia, have two sons, David and Daniel.
In 2005, Carlisle had the distinct privilege to coach Team USA in the 30th Fuji Xerox USA vs. Japan Collegiate Championship, leading the Americans to their 10th straight win. Many of Carlisle’s pupils have had successful amateur and professional golfing careers. Ryan Dillon, Aaron Black, Scott Usher, Dane Burkhart and Jeff Goff are all playing professionally on various mini-tours including the Gateway Tour, the Tarheel Tour and the Nationwide Tour. Former USC Aiken standout Scott Brown is competing on the PGA TOUR and won the 2013 Puerto Rico Open, posting a 20-under 268 for a one shot victory by carding a birdie on the 72nd hole. Brown qualified for two major tournaments in 2013, the 2013 Open Championship and the 2013 PGA Championship, and has his PGA TOUR card through 2015. An Aiken product born and raised, golf has always been a part of Carlisle’s life. Out of high school, Carlisle walked on to play college golf at Clemson University. Although never winning a conference or national title, the Tigers were a formidable force during his time there. Carlisle, a threeyear letterwinner, graduated from Clemson in 1980. After college, as most golfers do, Carlisle dreamed of playing on the PGA Tour. After competing as an amateur, Carlisle played on mini-tours for nearly five years. Winning a few tournaments highlighted his professional career. When Carlisle came to USC Aiken to take over for Paul Weiler as head golf coach, he regained his amateur status. He has won the Carolinas Amateur and the South Carolina Mid-Amateur Championships. Twice, Carlisle has advanced to the United

The Archives 2015-16 Season Review Despite having one of the youngest teams in the region, the 2016 University of South Carolina Aiken golf team was ranked nationally throughout the entire season, won a tournament and earned a berth to the NCAA South/ Southeast Regional. Four USC Aiken student-athletes garnered all-conference honors. Hubert Tisserand garnered first-team honors while Johnson Holliday and Axel Östensson tallied second-team accolades. Newcomer August Lindvall’s season was strong enough for him to earn PBC Freshman of the Year honors, marking the second straight year a Pacer has taken home such hardware. Östensson and Tisserand’s seasons were strong enough for the dyad to be named to the Division II PING All-Region teams. For the season, Tisserand led the way with a 73.0 stroke average. He picked up a win at the season-opening Kiawah Island Invitational. Additionally, he landed another topfive finish and one more in the top 10 of a tournament. Tisserand’s 15 rounds of par or better was top on the squad. Holliday was not far behind him, accounting for a 73.8 stroke average. He posted a top-five and a top-10 effort on the year. Holliday was second on the team with 12 rounds of par or better. His 66 on the final round of the Wexford

Plantation Intercollegiate was the best of the year for any USC Aiken student-athlete and was among the best in school history. Östensson tied Holliday with a 73.8 stroke average and registered a top-10 finish for the season. He totaled nine rounds of par or better. Lindvall’s play was solid throughout the season, finishing with a 74.5 stroke average. He posted eight rounds of par or better. Samuel Schiff played the majority of the competitions for the Pacers as he notched a 75.4 stroke average. Playing in 10 events, he totaled four rounds of par or better, with a low round of 70. At the season-opening Kiawah Island Invitational, head coach Michael Carlisle’s team posted a low-round of 284 after the first 18 holes. The squad continued its solid play by besting the next-closest team by three strokes over the next 18 holes en route to a six-stroke victory over Flagler and Georgia College. At the event, Tisserand, who opened with an even-par, 72, finished the event with a five-under par, 67, during the second round. His two-round total of 139 was good enough for him to be the individual medalist by a mere
stroke. Holliday’s one-under par, 143, allowed him to tie for eighth place. From there, the Pacers played at the Saint Leo Men’s Invitational. The squad posted a solid 15-under par, 849, en route to a seventh-place finish. Tisserand (-7), Holliday (-4) and Lindvall (-1) all produced top-25 finishes. USC Aiken squared off against Division I teams at the Firestone Invitational. The team wrapped up a ninth-place effort, beating seven squads. Carlisle’s squad wrapped up the final fall tournament at the Camden Intercollegiate. The squad took home a fourth-place finish in the Division I field that had 11 teams. Tisserand’s three-over par, 213, was good enough for eighth place.
USC Aiken closed out the regular season with finishes of 15th, 15th and 13th heading into the PBC Championship. The team took home a third-place finish. Tisserand led the way with a fifth-place effort, earning him all-tournament team honors. Carlisle’s team earned a berth in the loaded NCAA South/ Southeast Regional, where it finished 10th. Although the squad missed going to the NCAA Championship, the squad wrapped up the tournament by posting the lowest score in the third round (287). With everyone coming back next season, the USC Aiken golf team should able to compete once again for a PBC Championship, region title and an NCAA Championship.
After a seventh-place showing at the Matlock Invitational, the team regrouped to place third at the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate, which was against 16 Division I teams. Holliday took home silver medalist honors with an 11-under par, 205. He notched scores of 69-70-66. The Pacers hosted the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate. There, the squad finished 11th in the tournament.
