This is USC Aiken

The University of South Carolina Aiken was chartered in 1961 after entering into an agreement with the University of South Carolina to establish a two-year center in Aiken. The Aiken Center opened its doors in September 1961 to 139 students. Temporarily housed in Banksia, a renovated mansion in Aiken, the Center consisted of three full-time faculty members (one of whom served as Director of the Center). In 1968, the Center underwent an institutional self-study and was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools as a branch of the University of South Carolina and as a junior college. The first associate degrees were awarded in June 1968. The campus of USC Aiken moved from Banksia to its present site in 1972 and physical changes began to occur rapidly. At first, the permanent campus consisted of 100 acres and one multipurpose building which housed all university operations. A library was completed in 1975, and additional land was donated that increased the campus to 144 acres. In October 1977, the Student Activities Center was opened. A classroom building was occupied in 1978, and one year later, an auxiliary services building was added. An apartment complex for students, Pacer Downs, was ready

for occupancy in the fall of 1984. More construction additions to the campus included completion of the Etherredge Center, Ruth Patrick Science Education Center, the Business and Education Building, and the Alan B. Miller Nursing Building. Additional land was acquired increasing the campus to 400 acres. Academic and organizational changes also occurred rapidly. The faculty formalized its organizational structure and redefined its role in the governance of the institution in 1974-75. Also, the students reorganized their governing body and more precisely defined their role on campus; the administration and staff structures were overhauled and expanded to meet the demands of the growing academic programs. When the full-time equivalent student enrollment reached 1,066 in the fall of 1975, the USC Aiken campus was permitted to plan for senior level courses and to create a number of baccalaureate degree programs. In that same year, USCA received approval as a four-year branch campus by the Board of Trustees of the University of South Carolina, and USCA was designated a Recognized Candidate for Senior College Accreditation. In September 1976, the Board of Trustees granted academic autonomy to the Aiken Campus. The first bachelor’s degrees were granted in May 1977, and USCA became a fully 4

accredited senior college. Presently, the college community is comprised of more than 3,200 students, over 100 full-time faculty, approximately 110 staff members, and 28 administrators. USCA awards bachelor’s degrees in more than 20 major areas of study, master’s degrees in two areas, and offers a varied program of continuing education courses for the wider community. Today USC Aiken offers students a liberal education designed to develop an understanding of human experience which will equip them for life in a free society. To accomplish this, the University provides students with an opportunity to discover learning processes which enable them to grow personally and socially. It promotes students’ interaction within a community of active scholars and artists, and it encourages students to use the knowledge which they gain to deal with the problems of a rapidly changing world.

Team Preview The 2016-17 University of South Carolina Aiken women’s basketball team may still have several student-athletes from last year, but the look of the team will be completely different this season.

Sophomore Baylea Loven returns to the squad after seeing time in 14 games as a freshman. During her rookie campaign, Loven accounted for 2.9 points and 1.5 rebounds a night.

In his first year with the program, head coach Mark Miller has injected new life into a team that has a lot of experience. An outstanding coach at Holy Family, Miller wants to take a solid core and start building around the squad. Despite having a tough schedule, Miller’s team is relentless in practice and should continue to make an impact all season long.

“Baylea adds quality depth to our post,” Miller said. “She will continue to grow during her second season and will be a post presence for us.”

“We want to work really hard night-in and night-out,” Miller stated. “We want to get every day and if we do that, it means our process if working. If our process is working the wins will come. We have some good pieces and great student-athletes who work really hard.” POST Miller’s post players are a mixture of well-versed experience and raw, but talented players. Familiar Pacer Jasmine Coach is the lone senior down low. The native of North Augusta, S.C., has improved in each of her seasons since arriving on campus. Last season, Coach started 18 contests and averaged 22 minutes a night. She chipped in nearly five points and five boards a contest. “Jasmine is an unbelievably hard worker,” Miller said. “She is a blue-collar type player. Jasmine does all the little things. To be successful, we have to have someone with her skill set.” Junior Emry Tsitouris missed most of last season after suffering an injury early on. The 2014-15 Peach Belt Conference Freshman of the Year looks to be in solid form heading into the season. As a freshman, Tsitouris averaged 11.5 points and 9.0 rebounds a contest despite playing 24 minutes a night. In a handful of contests last season, she posted 11.6 points and 6.5 boards. “Hopefully we have a healthy Emry all season,” Miller stated. “She gives us experience and a low-post threat that can score. I think our system will help her a little bit. Emry has to continue to do a good job on the board and be a good post defender.”

Kwajelin Farrar and Emily Waters are a pair of freshman that have a lot of upside. Farrar was a second-team all-area honoree as a senior and was the MVP of the South Carolina vs. Georgia allstar game. As a senior, Farrar posted 10.6 points and 13.6 boards a night. Waters guided Carrollton H.S. to the state title game as a junior after pouring in 12 points and snagging six boards a contest. Waters is a GACA 4-A North all-state selection. “Emily and Kwajelin are both athletic posts who have a huge upside,” Miller stated. “As soon as they learn to play with the speed and physicality of this level, they’ll be good players.” GUARD Miller has a wealth of returning experience in his backcourt and also landed a transfer that should have an immediate impact. Carly Gilreath has seen time in 85 games through her first three seasons with the program at the point and shooting guard positions. She has canned 52 three-point shots during her time and has a 1.1 assist-to-turnover ratio. “Carly is a player with a lot of experience,” Miller said. “She’s learning the system and learning how I want her to play. Carly is very consistent, doesn’t make a lot of mistakes and is a good leader.” Alexis Ware’s production skyrocketed last year. Through her first two seasons, Ware accounted for a point a game. Last year, she netted 7.7 markers a contest. “Alexis is a very good offensive threat,” Miller stated. “She has to be consistent, but she’s somebody we are looking to this season. Alexis needs to get better on the glass and improve her defense.” 10

Kate Duff saw her numbers dip a little bit last year compared to the first two seasons, but still has a strong presence about her in games. “Kate is athletic and can do a lot of different things,” Miller said. “We are looking for her to have a breakout year. Kate needs to play consistent every night and become a good defender.” Jasmine Carter transferred to USC Aiken during the summer. The redshirt-sophomore played in 10 games as a freshman at Georgia before missing the rest of the season. Coming out of high school, she was labeled as the No. 18 shooting guard in the country. “Jasmine is a combo-guard,” Miller said. “She can play multiple positions. Jasmine can score and contribute in many ways. She needs to be a solid defender, but she’s a scorer who is very good from 17-feet in. Jasmine can create her own shot.” Sophomore Aubrey Lukacsko saw an abundance of time a season ago. She accounted for 5.0 points and 1.2 assists a game. “Aubrey will play some at the point guard spot,” Miller stated. “She needs to be consistent shooting the three and be better defensively. Aubrey has a really good feel for how I want to play and that’s a good thing.” Rachelle Aupont is a combo-player who played in 18 games before an injury forced her to the sideline. She notched 9.3 points and six boards a game. During a win at Lander, Aupont led a furious rally with 15 fourth-quarter points. “Rocky is a good player who needs to consistently knock down the three-point shot,” Miller said. “She needs to become an even better rebounder.” Redshirt-sophomore Sadé Johnson saw limited playing time a year ago. She played in six games and scored against UNC Pembroke and Augusta. “Sadé adds depth to a well-experienced group of guards,” Miller stated. Miller has a pair of freshmen in Celine Vega and Melyk Taouil. Vega was a three-time all-conference honoree who netted over 1,400 points during her high school career. Taouil was a three-time all-conference selection who guided her AAU team to the USJN championship.

“Celine can really shoot the three-pointer,” Miller said. “She has a good feel for the game. “Melyk is an athletic wing who is a good defender. She needs to be more consistent offensively. Melyk is a hard worker and is getting better defensively.” SCHEDULE The 2016-17 schedule is extremely tough for Miller and his team. In addition to facing a Francis Marion team that made the Elite Eight last season, the top two other teams in the PBC preseason poll reside in the PBC East with Augsuta and Lander. The squad starts off with the PBCSAC Challenge with games against Carson-Newman and at Lincoln Memorial Nov. 11-12. Fans get to experience Miller’s first home game Nov. 16 against Benedict, which finished 29-3 a season ago and made it to the Sweet 16. The team steps away for games at Winston-Salem State and Shaw. The Pacers close out November with a home date Nov. 30 against Johnson C. Smith. On Dec. 10, the team steps up in competition when it plays at Winthrop. USC Aiken hosts Paine (Dec. 13) before playing a pair of league contests at Young Harris (Dec. 17) and Clayton State (Dec. 19). The Pacers finish the 2016 calendar year with a non-conference contest at Wingate (Dec. 31). The Pacers will have an early-morning game Jan. 4 as area middle schools will pack the Convocation Center at 10:30 a.m., against Georgia College. Three days later, the Pacers host Columbus State. After a trip to North Georgia (Jan. 9), Miller’s team hosts Francis Marion (Jan. 11), Georgia Southwestern (Jan. 14) and Montevallo (Jan. 16). The Pacers hit the road for Armstrong State (Jan. 18) prior to entertaining UNC Pembroke (Jan. 21) and Lander (Jan. 25). The team closes out the first month of 2017 with games at Flagler (Jan. 28) and Augusta (Jan. 30). USC Aiken closes out the regular season with six February dates. The squad gets things started at Francis Marion (Feb. 4) before returning home to host the Pirates (Feb. 6). The Pacers head to UNC Pembroke (Feb. 8) and Lander (Feb. 11) prior to home contests against Flagler (Feb. 15) and Augusta (Feb. 22). 11

30 points in the third quarter marked the most by the squad in school history. After a three-point loss to Flagler, USC Aiken bounced back for two solid wins, including one over NCAA Tournament foe Lander. Playing in Greenwood, S.C., USC Aiken was sparked by Aupont’s five three-point buckets in the fourth quarter en route to the 68-65 come-from-behind victory. Aupont’s last three-point shot gave the team a 66-65 lead with 18 seconds to play. After a turnover by the Bearcats, Durian netted the final two points of the game with 11 seconds to play. At UNC Pembroke, USC Aiken once again used a strong fourth quarter to erase a three-point deficit. Ball led the team with 16 points while Johannsen tallied 14 points and nine rebounds.

Augusta to overtime before falling. The Pacers used a career-high effort of 19 points by Carly Gilreath as the catalyst in the game. The contest marked the final game of the careers of Tiffany Addison, Ball, Durian, Katelyn Grisillo and Johannsen. In addition to Durian leaving her mark with the prolific scoring game, Johannsen left USC Aiken as its all-time blocked shots leader. Addison, Ball and Grisillo each led the team by example and provided great leadership for the rest of the team. Having to play the second semester without Tsitouris due to an injury and having others to miss games due to injuries forced the Pacers to play shorthanded for much of the year. However, the way the team pushed through the adversity showed that the 2016-17 squad will be a team to be reckoned with in the league and region.
