This is USC Aiken
The University of South Carolina Aiken was chartered in 1961 after entering into an agreement with the University of South Carolina to establish a two-year center in Aiken. The Aiken Center opened its doors in September 1961 to 139 students. Temporarily housed in Banksia, a renovated mansion in Aiken, the Center consisted of three full-time faculty members (one of whom served as Director of the Center). In 1968, the Center underwent an institutional self-study and was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools as a branch of the University of South Carolina and as a junior college. The first associate degrees were awarded in June 1968. The campus of USC Aiken moved from Banksia to its present site in 1972 and physical changes began to occur rapidly. At first, the permanent campus consisted of 100 acres and one multipurpose building which housed all university operations. A library was completed in 1975, and additional land was donated that increased the campus to 144 acres. In October 1977, the Student Activities Center was opened. A classroom building was occupied in 1978, and one year later, an auxiliary services building was added. An apartment complex for students, Pacer Downs, was ready

for occupancy in the fall of 1984. More construction additions to the campus included completion of the Etherredge Center, Ruth Patrick Science Education Center, the Business and Education Building, and the Alan B. Miller Nursing Building. Additional land was acquired increasing the campus to 400 acres. Academic and organizational changes also occurred rapidly. The faculty formalized its organizational structure and redefined its role in the governance of the institution in 1974-75. Also, the students reorganized their governing body and more precisely defined their role on campus; the administration and staff structures were overhauled and expanded to meet the demands of the growing academic programs. When the full-time equivalent student enrollment reached 1,066 in the fall of 1975, the USC Aiken campus was permitted to plan for senior level courses and to create a number of baccalaureate degree programs. In that same year, USCA received approval as a four-year branch campus by the Board of Trustees of the University of South Carolina, and USCA was designated a Recognized Candidate for Senior College Accreditation. In September 1976, the Board of Trustees granted academic autonomy to the Aiken Campus. The first bachelor’s degrees were granted in May 1977, and USCA became a fully
accredited senior college. Presently, the college community is comprised of more than 3,200 students, over 100 full-time faculty, approximately 110 staff members, and 28 administrators. USCA awards bachelor’s degrees in more than 20 major areas of study, master’s degrees in two areas, and offers a varied program of continuing education courses for the wider community. Today USC Aiken offers students a liberal education designed to develop an understanding of human experience which will equip them for life in a free society. To accomplish this, the University provides students with an opportunity to discover learning processes which enable them to grow personally and socially. It promotes students’ interaction within a community of active scholars and artists, and it encourages students to use the knowledge which they gain to deal with the problems of a rapidly changing world.

Team Preview The University of South Carolina Aiken men’s soccer team has a wealth of talent returning from an 8-5-3 campaign and will look to make its second trip to the NCAA Tournament in the last three seasons in 2016.

After registering a school-record 14 wins in 2014, the team still produced a winning record despite having numerous setbacks due to injuries. When healthy over the final few weeks, the 2015 squad went 5-1-1 to end the season.

With so much talent returning, along with a strong core of newcomers, the Pacers could vie for a league championship and another berth in the NCAA Tournament. GOALKEEPER Between the pipes, Ofoje lost an all-conference keeper from last year just prior to the season starting. However, he returns a pair of senior keepers that could prove beneficial throughout the year. Senior Chase Boulton played in five matches last season, earning three starts. Boulton garnered 285 minutes in goal, tallying a .684 save percentage. He came up with some big stops in his time and will see a lot of playing time this year. Fellow senior Jesse Rooker brings a big frame to the squad. He saw action in a pair of matches as a freshman, but did not see a shot on frame. After not playing the last two seasons, he returned to the squad prior to the first day of preseason and has shown he is a strong force between the pipes. FORWARD The Pacers lost one of their top players in Jarrel Smalls due to graduation, but have high expectations for a young group of forwards. Ofoje has three freshmen that could see time up top in Roberto Biendicho, Desmond Mwaura and Nikola Vlaovic. Although the three are the only ones on the roster listed as true forwards, junior Brett Smith and rookie Eric Roberts could also see time up top. Smith is one of the most

MIDFIELD
Adria Dalmau, Nathan Shanko, Jordan Misiri, Andre Simmond, Nader Fakih, Billy Johns and Smith will all see plenty of time here. Misiri and Simmond are preseason all-conference selections while Dalmau and Shanko are two of the most underrated players in the conference. All four have the ability to create chances and put the ball in the back of the net for the Pacers and each will look to continue pushing forward throughout each match. Fakih is well versed and brings an abundance of energy to the team and has proven to be a solid player throughout his time. Johns stepped up last season when injuries forced him into the line-up early on and Smith has been a force at the position during his first two years. DEFENDER USC Aiken has a pair of seasoned veterans along the back line in Ryan Dwyer and Rodrigo Goncalves. Healthy, the two are among the best in the conference. Ofoje also returns junior Chris Perez, who saw quality minutes last year and will vie for a lot more time this season. Along with the talented trio, the Pacers have some solid newcomers in the mix in senior transfer Davis Hall, sophomore Pedro Luna and rookies Fredrik Bringager and Conley Waters Jr. The defense will be tested early and often, but looks to return to the strong form of the NCAA Tournament team in 2014.
SCHEDULE Ofoje’s 2016 schedule is as tough as they come. Never one to back down from challenges, his team opens with a road match at Lenoir-Rhyne (Sept. 7). The squad hosts Mount Olive (Sept. 10) and Carson-Newman (Sept. 12 – 3:30 p.m.) in a rare Monday afternoon date.
USC Aiken will travel to Francis Marion (Oct. 12), North Georgia (Oct. 15), Pfeiffer (Oct. 19) and Clayton State (Oct. 22) before returning home for the final two regularseason matches against UNC Pembroke (Oct. 26) and Montevallo (Oct. 29).
The Pacers travel to Shorter (Sept. 15), but return home for a pair of contests against West Alabama (Sept. 19) and Erskine (Sept. 21). The Pacers hit the road for Georgia Southwestern (Sept. 24) and Queens (Sept. 28). After a road match at Young Harris (Oct. 1), the squad returns home for battles against Flagler (Oct. 5) and Lander (Oct. 8).

Ike Ofoje begins his 21st season at the helm of the USC Aiken men’s soccer program and the 13th year in which he will solely coach just one team. Ofoje started the women’s program at USC Aiken in 1997 and served as its head coach for eight seasons, compiling a record of 51-77-10. In 2005, however, Sue Vodicka was hired as the program’s first full-time women’s soccer coach. With the addition of Vodicka, Ofoje took on the role of Director of Soccer Operations. In his 19 seasons at the helm of the Pacers, he has a 109-202-32 overall record. In 2015, his team suffered numerous injuries throughout the coruse of the year. When his team was fully healthy, the squad went 5-1-1. Ofoje led the squad to a berth in the PBC Tournament and led it to a winning record for the second straight season. Andre Bernardini picked up first-team allconference honors while Andre Simmond garnered second-team accolades. The 2014 campaign was a banner year for Ofoje. He guided the team to a school-record 14 victories and the team’s first-ever berth in the NCAA Tournament. Ofoje’s squad finished second in the Peach Belt Conference regular season and was the runnerup in the PBC Tournament. Ofoje was named PBC Coach of
Georgia. Ofoje had two student-athletes earn Goalkeeper of the Week honors by the PBC. The Pacers closed out the 2012 season with a 6-6-6 record due to NCAA rules, but two of USC Aiken’s six ties included penalty kick shootout wins over nationally sixth-ranked Lander and Young Harris in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament. With the wins, USC Aiken would advance to the Peach Belt Conference Tournament Championship game. The Pacers fell to Montevallo in the Tournament Championship match. The 2011 Pacer men’s soccer team ended their campaign with a record of 3-10-4. The Pacers owned a record of 1-5-2 in Peach Belt Conference action. The 2010 USC Aiken men’s soccer team advanced to the Peach Belt Conference Tournament before losing to Clayton State in the first round of the championship. USC Aiken concluded the year overall with a 2-11-2 record. Brett Van Pelt was chosen to the league’s All-Conference first team. The 2009 USC Aiken men’s soccer team closed out their regular season with three consecutive victories, capped off by a 3-2 upset win over 13th-ranked Anderson at the Pacer Pit. USC Aiken outscored their opponents 11-3 during the three-game winning streak.

The Archives 2015 Season Review The University of South Carolina Aiken men’s soccer team finished the 2015 season shy of its goal of reaching the NCAA Tournament for the second time in school history, but the team thrived throughout the season and played some of the best soccer near the end of the season when the team was healthy. Battling injuries from the outset of the 2015 campaign forced head coach Ike Ofoje to alter his starting line-up for over half the season. However, the squad still competed well in every match and started to put it all together in the second half of the season. By going 8-5-3, including a 5-3-1 mark against league foes, the Pacers managed to accomplish something that had not been done in the program’s history. The team garnered back-to-back winning seasons for the first time in school history, fresh off the 2014 season that saw the squad go 146-1 and earn an NCAA Tournament berth. It also marked just the second time in school history the program had been over .500 in back-to-back conference schedules. After losing their season-opening match, the Pacers bounced back with a victory over Erskine. Newcomer Patrick Widemann notched the first goal of the season for USC Aiken while Jarrel Smalls, who missed last season, fired home the game-winning goal in the 89th minute of action. The squad tied its home opener against Lenoir-Rhyne as Smalls knotted the contest at 1-1 in the 39th minute of play. In an electric atmosphere at Carson-Newman, Ofoje’s team

recorded another come-from-behind tie as Nathan Shanko found Andre Simmond for his first points of the season. Against Shorter, USC Aiken rattled off a season-high five goals off the boot of four different student-athletes. Gabriel Locher recorded a pair of goals while Simmond had four points on a goal and two assists. Shanko garnered a goal and an assist while Smalls blasted home a game-winning tally. Defensively, Andre Bernardini stopped six shots while playing the entire 90 minutes between the pipes. After losses to Young Harris and Lander, the Pacers got on track, closing out the regular season with a 6-1-1 record. All eight contests were played during the month of October. For the second consecutive season, Ofoje’s squad played Flagler relentlessly for 90 minutes – and for the second straight year, the Pacers recorded the victory. Smalls assisted on a pass to Shanko for the game-winner at the 38:50 mark while Bernardini turned away three shots on goal en route to the win. USC Aiken stepped out of conference for the final time of the season for a match slated for Mount Olive. Simmond converted a penalty kick for the first goal of the day before Jordan Misiri returned from an injury and dished out an assist on the game-winning goal to Smalls. In a late-night affair at Montevallo, USC Aiken found itself trailing 1-0 at the break. However, the Pacers battled back to tie the match 19 seconds into the second period when Simmond found the back of the net. USC Aiken controlled the rest of the match, including both overtime sessions.
However, the team was unable to slip one past the keeper for the game-winner, resulting in the 1-1 draw. After a 4-2 loss at Francis Marion that saw the home team reel off three consecutive goals after Dean Smith notched his first career goal, the Pacers got back on track with three of the final four matches slated for Pacer Pit. With Chase Boulton starting in goal, USC Aiken found itself trailing 1-0 to Clayton State at the 3:57 mark of the first half. Ofoje’s team went on the offensive and pushed forward to its offensive third of the pitch. The Pacers knotted the contest just before halftime on a goal by Adria Dalmau and won it on Shanko’s goal off a pass from Simmond in the 68th minute. The victory pushed the Pacers into ninth place in the PBC regular-season standings after the 1-3-1 start. Three days later, USC Aiken hosted Georgia Southwestern and the Hurricanes gave the Pacers everything they could handle in regulation. With the score tied at 2-2, Dean Smith found Rodrigo Goncalves for the game-winning goal at the 95:45 mark off a free kick. The win allowed the squad to climb into seventh place in the league standings heading into its final two regular-season matches.
back to Florence, S.C., to face Francis Marion for the second time this season and for the second straight PBC Tournament. Although the Pacers led 1-0 at the break, the Patriots managed to score three goals and end USC Aiken’s bid for its second straight appearance in the PBC Tournament Championship. By netting the team’s lone goal in the 28th minute, Simmond was named to the all-tournament team. The PBC recognized Simmond as a Player of the Week earlier this year while Dean Smith and Rodrigo Goncalves each picked up PBC Defender of the Week accolades. Bernardini, who had a .743 save percentage while playing 1116:47 between the pipes, was voted a first-team all-conference performer. With a team-best 19 points, Simmond jumped into USC Aiken’s career top-10 list for points with 42 through his first two seasons while being named a second-team all-league selection. Dalmau, Goncalves and Shanko were named to the PBC all-academic team. Despite losing nine seniors to graduation, Ofoje has a solid core returning for the 2016 campaign. If it is anything like the last two seasons, the Pacers will come together and make another run for a berth in the NCAA Tournament.
On the road against an always dangerous UNC Pembroke team on the Braves’ Senior Day, USC Aiken jumped on top early as Shanko connected with Misiri for what turned out to be the game-winning goal. Simmond added an insurance goal in the 87th minute for the 2-0 victory, securing the No. 5 seed for the upcoming PBC Tournament. On the Pacers’ Senior Day, nine student-athletes were honored at halftime for their hard work and dedication to the program throughout their time at USC Aiken. At that point, Ofoje’s team was up 1-0 but added another goal as Ryan Dwyer took a pass from Locher in the 67th minute for what turned out to be the game-winning goal. The Pacers added a flurry of goals in the final seven minutes of action as Smalls, Edmund Eastick and Sajih Daychoum found the back of the net for goals on their last home match. Dean Smith was another senior that scored a point off the goal from Smalls. With the No. 5 seed, USC Aiken had to make the trek
