The Peach Belt Conference The Peach Belt Conference is committed to providing, through its dependent collegiate members, a forum for student participation in athletic, academic and co-curricular events under the auspices of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, Division II. We will exemplify the characteristics of a premier intercollegiate conference that prides itself on the inclusion of students of all demographic groups who wish to participate in a well-rounded sports program. The University of South Carolina Aiken was chartered in 1961 after entering into an agreement with the University of South Carolina to establish a two-year center in Aiken. The Aiken Center opened its doors in September 1961 to 139 students. Temporarily housed in Banksia, a renovated mansion in Aiken, the Center consisted of three full-time faculty members (one of whom served as Director of the Center). In 1968, the Center underwent an institutional self-study and was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools as a branch of the University of South Carolina and as a junior college. The first associate degrees were awarded in June 1968. The campus of USC Aiken moved from Banksia to its present site in 1972 and physical changes began to occur rapidly. At first, the permanent campus consisted of 100 acres and one multipurpose building which housed all university operations. A library was completed in 1975, and additional land was donated that increased the campus to 144 acres. In October 1977, the Student Activities Center was opened. A classroom building was occupied in 1978, and one year later, an auxiliary services building was added.
An apartment complex for students, Pacer Downs, was ready for occupancy in the fall of 1984. More construction additions to the campus included completion of the Etherredge Center, Ruth Patrick Science Education Center, the Business and Education Building, and the Alan B. Miller Nursing Building. Additional land was acquired increasing the campus to 400 acres. Academic and organizational changes also occurred rapidly. The faculty formalized its organizational structure and redefined its role in the governance of the institution in 1974-75. Also, the students reorganized their governing body and more precisely defined their role on campus; the administration and staff structures were overhauled and expanded to meet the demands of the growing academic programs. When the full-time equivalent student enrollment reached 1,066 in the fall of 1975, the USC Aiken campus was permitted to plan for senior level courses and to create a number of baccalaureate degree programs. In that same year, USCA received approval as a four-year branch campus by the Board of Trustees of the University of South Carolina, and USCA was designated a Recognized Candidate for Senior College
Accreditation. In September 1976, the Board of Trustees granted academic autonomy to the Aiken Campus. The first bachelor’s degrees were granted in May 1977, and USCA became a fully accredited senior college. Presently, the college community is comprised of more than 3,200 students, over 100 full-time faculty, approximately 110 staff members, and 28 administrators. USCA awards bachelor’s degrees in more than 20 major areas of study, master’s degrees in two areas, and offers a varied program of continuing education courses for the wider community. Today USC Aiken offers students a liberal education designed to develop an understanding of human experience which will equip them for life in a free society. To accomplish this, the University provides students with an opportunity to discover learning processes which enable them to grow personally and socially. It promotes students’ interaction within a community of active scholars and artists, and it encourages students to use the knowledge which they gain to deal with the problems of a rapidly changing world.

Randy Warrick is in his 28th year as Director of Athletics at the

Team Preview Fresh off an NCAA Tournament second-round appearance, head coach Steve Dahm’s men’s tennis team is looking to make the next step toward its goal of playing for a national championship. With the talented student-athletes on his team this season, the Pacers could make a strong push for one of the top seeds in not only the conference, but also regionally and on the national stage. “I’m really looking forward to the start of the season,” Dahm said. We have a great mix of experienced older guys and enthusiastic underclassmen.” Returning to the top spot in the line-up is Ettore Damiani. A season ago, Damiani recorded a 12-8 singles record at No. 1 while compiling a 14-7 ledger as part of the No. 2 doubles team. “Ettore had a lot of success last season and is looking to build upon that by staying aggressive off the baseline,” Dahm stated. “Having trained mostly on the soft clay of Italy, Ettore can play a bit defensive at times. He is adapting better to the college hard courts and should be among the elite nationally this year.” Alejandro Andino posted five singles victories in 2014, including four at No. 3. He was part of a 10-win doubles tandem at the top spot along with former Pacer Patrick Stiebinger. “Another leader and proven performer is Alejandro Andino,” Dahm said. “Andino, who won a national championship with Barry University, will start in both singles and doubles.” Andy Quirk notched seven singles wins on the year, including six as the No. 2 seed. He was also part of an outstanding doubles team that earned eight
victories at the No. 3 spot. “Senior southpaw Andy Quirk will be a force in the singles line-up,” Dahm stated. “Andy is a transfer from the University of Wisconsin where he started in many dual matches. Andy will bring necessary leadership and experience to the roster.” Jaime Gusano did not see any time in a strong singles line-up last year. However, he was part of two doubles matches. “Jaime Gusano will add solid depth,” Dahm said. “Jaime has a potent forehand and an underestimated doubles game.” Ronan Reberac had a good 2014 campaign in doubles action. He was part of six victories on the season. “Senior Ronan Reberac, who also hails from France, had a lot of success this fall playing doubles with Degardin,” Dahm stated. “Ronan has a good serve and great hands; he will be looking to contribute in the doubles line-up.” “As good as I believe we are, I know the rest of the Peachbelt will be strong as well,” Dahm said. “I look forward to putting our guys to the test.” Also on Dahm’s squad are three important pieces to the puzzle in newcomers Mathias Degardin, Clement Raymond and Julien Tan. “We have a trio of new Frenchman that will fill half the singles spots,” Dahm stated. “This French Connection includes: Julien Tan, Mathias Degardin, and Clement Raymond. Not only do these guys bring considerable talent, but they also have the drive to compete for every point throughout the grueling four month season.”
SCHEDULE Dahm put together another grueling schedule for his team. The Pacers open the season at Georgia Gwinnett (Feb. 5) before opening PBC play at home against North Georgia (Feb. 7). The next day, USC Aiken entertains Queens (Feb. 8). The Pacers hit the road for three matches, including a pair of league contests, before returning home for two contests. USC Aiken plays at Coker (Feb. 11), at Georgia Southwestern (Feb. 14) and at Columbus State (Feb. 15) prior to hosting Belmont Abbey (Feb. 17) and Benedict (Feb. 21). Dahm’s squad completes February with a pair of PBC contests coming at Francis Marion (Feb. 22) and a neutral-site affair against Flagler (Feb. 28). The Pacers host perennial national champion Armstrong State (March 1) prior to playing Pfeiffer (March 4) and Lander (March 6) away from home. USC Aiken hosts Limestone (March 19) and rival GRU Augusta (March 22) before making the trek to Young Harris (March 28). On Apr. 1, the Pacers travel to North Greenville for a mid-week match. Two days later, the team closes out PBC play with a home match against Georgia College. USC Aiken wraps up the regular season with home dates against Anderson (Apr. 9) and Bluefield State (Apr. 19) before turning its attention to the PBC and NCAA Tournaments.

The Pacer women’s tennis team finished 2013 at 10-12, going 5-8 against Peach Belt opposition. Shauna Williams was named PBC Player of the Week on Feb. 19. The Pacers were ranked as high as 44th nationally, but did not participate in the Regional Tournament. Dahm has led both teams to national rankings and to the NCAA Tournament. He has spent time at the Van der Meer Tennis Center, the University of Rochester and the Country Club of Buffalo, where he was the head tennis professional for five summers. In collegiate play, Dahm was the number one singles and doubles player at the University of Buffalo. He was selected to the Mid-American All-Conference team as well as the First-Team All-Star squad. While attending UB, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology.

The Archives 2014 Season Review Expectations were high at the start of the 2014 USC Aiken men’s tennis season and head coach Steve Dahm’s team did not disappoint. The squad earned a preseason national ranking and stayed among the best nationally throughout the season, clinching a berth in the NCAA Tournament while advancing to the second round with a relatively young squad. The Pacers registered an 11-10 overall mark, but ones in the tennis community understand that Dahm’s group is playing in the toughest conference in Division II, which is why the squad was ranked as high as No. 13 nationally during the season. The team also reached No. 4 in the regional poll and was dominant in several matches, winning five by scores of 7-2 or better. USC Aiken opened the season with a hard fought 5-4 road win at Valdosta State on Feb. 2. The squad extended its strong start on the road with a 9-0 blanking of Belmont Abbey five days later. Despite dropping its home opener, Dahm’s team battled back, ripping off five straight victories – something the team had not accomplished since the 2009 campaign – when the team went 20-5. During the winning streak, the team flourished away from its home venue as the Pacers posted wins at region foes Anderson and Erskine before returning home to pound out victories over Pfeiffer, Coker and PBC foe Georgia Southwestern in the league opener. After losing three straight matches, including two away from home, USC Aiken bounced back, snagging wins in two of its next three contests. Dahm’s squad bested Limestone by an 8-1 count and reeled off a 6-3 road win at Queens. The
team picked up a win against Young Harris on Apr. 5, but dropped the final three regular-season matches, which caused the team to miss the Peach Belt Conference Tournament. However, the NCAA Region Rankings came out and the Pacers clinched the No. 9 seed in the tournament. Traveling to Savannah, Ga., for the regional tournament that was hosted by Armstrong, the Pacers upended North Georgia by a 5-2 count, sending the team into the second round for the second consecutive season. Alejandro Andino and Patrick Stiebinger picked up second-team all-conference honors for doubles teams while Ettore Damiani notched second-team all-league accolades in singles action. Damiani notched a 12-8 singles record, including a 5-5 mark against PBC foes all while playing at the No. 1 position. Andino and Stieibnger picked up 10 doubles wins at the No. 1 spot. Damiani and Gobbi led the doubles’ tandems with 14 wins at the No. 2 slot. Gobbi also tallied 10 singles victories, with nine coming at the No. 4 position. Stiebinger and Felix Zahn each registered eight singles victories while Andy Quirk added seven to the mix. The Pacers lost two standout student-athletes in Gobbi and Stiebinger due to graduation, but the team returns an abundance of experience and talent, which will lead to even brighter days in the coming seasons.
