FROM THE EDITOR

Hello again,

Well, here we are in 2023. We hope it’s a much better year than the last few have been! Between the pandemic and its aftermath, the ongoing war in Ukraine, a poor economy and the ongoing cost of living crisis, it’s difficult for many of us to look forward over the next 12 months filled with optimism and confidence.

Yet we need to feel confident about our lives, our futures and our communities. We can best do so by making wise choices and small changes. It’s about supporting local businesses, buying quality rather than fast fashion, or choosing to be more conscious in our consumption. It’s about sustainability and compassion, but still having a good time.

A new outfit or a night out, a meal or catch up with friends can boost our mood and help the local economy, without your bank manager having apoplexy. Seek out the people, places and experiences that make you happy. Focus on small pleasures, treasured moments and the occasional glorious extravagance!

Our part of the world has weathered these storms before and will doubtless do so again. Let’s move in to 2023 with the determination that together, we can make things better for everyone who lives here.

Finding a health and lifestyle venue to suit you

This time of year sees many of us carrying a few surplus festive pounds. We have a renewed determination to increase our activity levels and to feel better within ourselves. Whether we are looking to feel fitter, be stronger, increase our flexibility or to find some calm in our busy lives; there will be a health and lifestyle venue to suit you.

Lots of us join a gym in January. However statistics show that most have stopped attending by the middle of February. The Direct Debit then coming regularly off your already strained bank account becomes too awkward to cancel or maybe even impossible for a duration of time.

StudioBE offer Pay-As-You-Go classes priced from £7 - £11. This is an excellent way of booking and attending classes without being tied in and trying something new. They also offer monthly passes which include unlimited timetabled classes. These are £35 for fitness classes only and £55 for fitness and holistic classes.

As some US research shows, two thirds of people with gym memberships don’t actually go and one third of those who purchase online health and fitness products don’t get round to downloading them. Sadly, just signing up won’t make the pounds drop off, or muscles make a miraculous appearance.

StudioBE has the ideal location at 13 Carden Place. Classes and

Personal Training sessions can be attended from early morning until evening. Although not a gym, the StudioBE Personal Trainers find that many of their clients follow through programmes at a gym of their choice but choose to have their sessions at their dedicated Personal Training studio.

8 | STUDIOBE

Choosing a facility with the right atmosphere can also help you stick with the programme. You want to go somewhere you feel comfortable and not judged or intimidated by swarms of fitness influencers or people deadlifting twice their own bodyweight. Look for somewhere with classes that are suitable for beginners and where the staff are happy to explain how the equipment works.

StudioBE pride themselves on their welcoming and inclusive environment. They work with clients from 14 to 70+. Their trainers and class teachers/ instructors take an individual approach, making time to explain and listen. They can

help you set realistic goals and work towards them.

StudioBE’s Personal Trainers are some of the most experienced in Aberdeen and ensure every client is treated confidentially. They also provide sessions that are never intimidating and even fun! On contacting the Studio a PT can be assigned to you depending on what type of training you are looking for.

Women tend to drop out of their fitness programmes when they believe that they, in themselves, aren’t worth it and they shouldn’t spend their time on money on themselves. StudioBE firmly believe that putting your own health first will only enrich you and your family’s life.

Try BECycle where the tunes and atmosphere will improve your cardio fitness and leave you buzzing! BEConditioned will strengthen and also improve cardio fitness through body weight or use of resistance plates/bars. Pilates and Yoga classes are also timetabled for you to increase core strength, improve posture, increase flexibility and find some calm in your day.

StudioBE is a welcome addition to west end Aberdeen and you absolutely want to BEinvolved! Find out more at studioBE.uk or contact studiobe@gmail.com

JULIA STRONACH provides a masterclass in makeup for mature skin…

Julia’s studio is at the Inverurie Business Hub. She offers occasion makeup, lessons and is in great demand for bridal makeup. To find out more about Julia’s studio and services, please visit juliastronach.co.uk, facebook.com/juliastronachmakeup or check out her Instagram @JulzStron.

Julia explained, ‘I did a special course in mature makeup in Beverley Hills when I realised that most of my clients weren’t seventeen! Our faces change over time, so what looked great in our twenties doesn’t flatter us in our thirties, forties or beyond. For me, women can look their best at any age, if they understand the colours, textures and - most of all - the application techniques that will work best for who they are now. After all, we wouldn’t wear the same clothes we wore as teenagers, so why should we stick to the makeup techniques we used back then?’

‘Start with the skin. Medical grade skincare products and dermaplaning can work wonders. Always moisturise before applying foundation in thin layers. You can always build it up. Use a damp beauty sponge to push it into the skin and always take it down the neck. If your hair is going up, then sweep it behind the ears too. Bounce the sponge over the skin to reduce the excess. Lightly apply setting powder where you want to minimise pores and mattify the sides of the nose.

‘For cheeks, start at the top of the ear and down though the hollow and under the cheekbones using bronzer and a soft brush, blush along the same lines, but slightly higher and blur with the brush.

‘Don’t overthink the eyes. We’re using a medium brown on an eyeshadow brush and raising the skin on the eyelids. Stipple press

it in, then use a darker brown at the outer half. With hooded eyes, take it just above the brow bone so it shows when the eyes are open. We’re using a pinkish bone shade on the inner lid.

‘Fuller brows and lashes usually give a healthy, youthful look. Use a fine angle liner brush to apply a thin layer of darker toned eyeshadow along the lash line. False lashes don't have to be huge, and can look really subtle, especially when the band is cut to the correct size for the eye. Bend into shape and leave the glue to get tacky for a minute before applying from about quarter of the way out from the inner corner. Tilt the head back and place them as close to the lash roots as possible. When dry, apply mascara to join your real and false lashes. Apply a brow fibre or pencil in feather strokes to thicken brows.

‘Smile when using your lip liner and take the Cupid’s bow just slightly higher, as this makes you look younger. Fill in with your lipstick.

‘Taking a picture of your finished look can show up anything that needs correcting.

‘There are so many brands out there and fewer places where you can try before you buy, so a personal lesson can be a useful investment to learn the exact products suited to your skin type,

Aberdeen Rapid Transit (ART) campaign launched

Nestrans, Aberdeen City Council, Aberdeenshire Council and bus operators have shared their vision to deliver a new transport system that will enable fast, frequent and reliable services; through a combination of dedicated bus lanes, off board fare collection, fast and efficient boarding and alighting.

Councillor John Crawley, chair of Nestrans and Aberdeenshire Council’s Infrastructure Services Committee, commented, ‘ART aims to provide a more attractive alternative to car travel for many journeys, helping to reduce congestion and air pollution, as well as better services for the many people that do not have access to a car.’

In 2021, the partners submitted an initial bid to the BPF, resulting in a successful £2 million award to develop the business cases and designs for ART. It is hoped that this work will result in further funding which would enable the delivery of ART, subject to formal approval by Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire Council.

14 | VALENTINES

Here, it’s traditional for the groom to carry the bride over the threshold, but Scottish grooms have easy compared to those getting married at Lake Bled in Slovenia. It’s considered lucky to carry your bride up all 99 steps to the church. Best get some practice in at the Trinity Centre.

Blackening is another local tradition, though something of a rarity these days. Being pelted with all manner of disgustingly smelly or slimy substances and paraded round town on the back of a lorry has given way to pre-wedding spa weekends.

Some people believe that in Ancient Greece, men threw an apple at the object of their affections. If the young lady caught it, this essentially meant that they were engaged. Apples are certainly

cheaper than engagement rings, but the latter last longer. If you must pelt your significant other with fruit, it’s best to throw underarm.

During China’s equivalent to Valentine’s Day, men from Miao villages in South West China will serenade the lady of their choice. Meanwhile the women cook rice and dye it in four different colours. Receiving rice with a pair of chopsticks is a good news, though one chopstick is considered a polite rejection. Receiving a garlic bulb with the rice is a very bad sign, while a pine needle indicates that the young lady may need a few more gifts to be persuaded to consider her suitor.

Actually, maybe just buy some flowers…

Union Terrace Gardens reopened after three years

Union Terrace Gardens reopened a few days before Christmas. Despite renovations taking more than three years and costing £28 million, many felt underwhelmed by the initial results. Improvements include better access for those who use wheelchairs, three new pavilions perched above the gardens, new toilets and a play area for children. The grass areas are due to be returfed in spring which should improve the appearance of the area.

Men suffer the signs of aging just as much as women,’ Aesthetic Beauty Inverurie’s Martina Mackay explained.

It stimulates the follicles and help hair regrowth. Men suffer the signs of aging just as much as women,’ Aesthetic Beauty Inverurie’s Martina Mackay explained, ‘but many now recognise that there’s no need for them to do so. One of our most popular treatments is DermaPen microneedling. It’s a wonderful all-round treatment that uses tiny microneedles to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin, which is what gives youthful skin its firm bounciness. As we age, our collagen and elastin production decreases, but DermaPen treatments give them a boost. It’s a proven treatment for reducing acne scarring, large pores and pigmentation spots. Many of my clients also use it to stimulate the follicles and encourage hair regrowth.’

Ruth Strachan at Bio Wellness in Stonehaven added, ‘Facial treatments, no longer seen as something only women do. Regular facials will help skin look younger, healthier and give you a better shave. Men have thicker, oiler skin, more prone breakouts and lack of exfoliation can also lead to ingrown hairs. Our HydraFacial is a popular 7-step facial that’s ideal for men who are prone to breakouts, ingrown hairs or congestion. We start with lymphatic drainage to detox, followed by exfoliation, peel, extractions, infusion of serums and finish with light therapy. The difference is remarkable.

‘Skin Boosters are a type of injectable treatment but give a much more natural approach to facial rejuvenation than Botox and fillers. There is no augmentation or changing a client’s face but we simply inject hyaluronic acid and nutrients

directly into the skin. This improves hydration, collagen production and skin texture. It’s great for acne scarring and we even have mesotherapy treatments to stimulate hair growth for men who may be concerned about hair loss.’

Leah Athanassopoulos at Aberdeen’s Alpha Clinic says that men are increasingly interested in both non-surgical and surgical solutions to the problems of anti-aging. ‘There are more men having wrinkle relaxing treatments than ever before. There’s no downtime and results usually begin to show within a few days but can take up to two weeks.

We’re finding that using dermal fillers to achieve a strong, desirable jawline is an area of growing interest. Results are immediate and get better over time.

There was a time looking good just meant swiping your other half’s moisturiser every now and again, but these days more and more men are spending time and money on looking good for longer. We take a look at the best treatments
30 | MENS EDIT

‘Ultherapy is an excellent treatment option for men with mild to moderate skin laxity that want to restore facial firmness and look younger. It initiates the body’s own collagen production for a natural and refreshed appearance. Results usually show within three to six months and can last up to two years.

‘Popular surgical options include Blepharoplasty for excess upper eyelid skin or lower eye bags. Patients are generally able to return to work one week after the procedure.

‘Liposuction is commonly used to permanently remove fatty deposits around the stomach, chest and chin. Downtime is a bit longer as a compression garment should be worn for 6 weeks to reduce swelling. It will take around two weeks to recover from the procedure and up to six months to see noticeable results as the treated area settles down. Surgery is always going to make the most difference but for people who are not ready for surgery, there are plenty of alternatives.’

Although January is the coldest month in the Canaries, the average temperature is still a balmy 17oC and you’d be really unlucky if the mercury dropped below 14oC. With a flight time of under five hours from Aberdeen and direct flights on Wednesdays and Sundays that makes it ideal for a winter break.

Tenerife is the largest of the islands. It’s known for its nightlife, restaurants and a large active volcano in the centre of the island.

Fuerteventura is your best option for if you just want to bake in the sun. It boasts around 150 beaches, a national park, some picturesque villages and lots of dive schools, whale and dolphin watching expeditions and water sports.

Lanzarote is great for budgetfriendly family breaks, with lots of theme parks and attractions, though at times if feels more like Alton Towers than part of Spain, so there are better choices if you’re looking for authenticity.

If you want to mix sun with an endless succession of sightseeing, then consider a cruise in the Caribbean. Each day brings a new island to explore, with organised excursions or the chance to slope off to a white sand beach or take a wander through markets and local landmarks. You’ll need to check on the latest vaccine regulations before booking.

Cruises, especially if you book last minute, can offer surprisingly good value. Food and entertainment is included and in some cases tips, drinks and even some on-board spending money is included in the package. Most ships have spas, premium restaurants, casinos, pools and lots to do. There are

even ships with aqua parks, ice-rinks, go-kart tracks and roller-coasters. Even with all these activities, expect to gain a pound a day from overeating, so take some trousers with an elasticated waist for the journey home!

The best thing about cruising in the Caribbean is that you have so much choice. There’s always a new adventure in the next port and you can get some serious relaxation in between ports. Oh, and it gives you the chance to go shopping for a few new evening outfits for the journey, though many ships are less formal than previously.

If you’re looking for a warm wellbeing break and your bank balance can take it, then there are some exceptional spa hotels in the Maldives. You’ll need to travel via London or Amsterdam, and you’re looking at least 16 hours on board, so download a few films, books and podcasts to keep you amused.

There are 26 atolls in the island chain, so inter-island travel is mostly by speedboat or seaplanes. January to March is considered high season, and you can expect temperatures in the high twenties.

Holidays in the Maldives are more about doing nothing than being all action adventures. It’s about private islands, cabins over the water, people magically appearing with fruit-laden cocktails and an endless round of sunbathing, massage and perhaps the odd spot of yoga. Food tends to focus on being light and healthy with lots of seafood on the menu. It’s the perfect place to recharge and get away from it all.

Duthie Park chosen as venue for 2023 European Pipe Band Championships

Duthie Park will be a sea of tartan this summer as pipe bands from across Europe compete in the European Championships on June 24th. Adrian Watson, Chief Executive Officer of Aberdeen Inspired said, ‘We are absolutely thrilled to partner with Aberdeen City Council and the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association (RSPBA) in securing the European Pipe Band Championships for Duthie Park, Aberdeen, in 2023. This is one of the largest piping events in the world and will attract bands from near and far. The championships will bring many thousands to our city and we are delighted to work with our partners in realising all the opportunities that an event of this scale can bring, both in the short and longer term.’

Local school film showcased at national gallery

A film created by Aberdeenshire pupils has been displayed at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art after a local high school won a national competition.

Pupils from Kemnay Academy travelled to the capital to watch a film they created on local land being projected onto the museum after being announced as winners of the Scottish Land Commission’s MyLand.Scot ‘My Land, My Story’ campaign.

The film told the story of the area around Kemnay Quarry and the transformation the land has seen in the past, present and future - from producing granite that was used in the Scottish Parliament Building

and Forth Road Bridge, to becoming a community and educational space.

Dexter Cook, a 16-year-old pupil from the school, explained, ‘Creating the film has been a brilliant experience. It’s been fascinating to learn about our local land and get creative to showcase its use.

‘The highlight was actually winning the competition. Everyone is extremely proud to have seen our film projected onto the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art and it was such a fun day travelling to Edinburgh as a class for the event.’

Aberdeen hospitality firm wins top industry accolade

A North-east business is celebrating after being named as Scotland’s Independent Multiple Operator of the Year at the 26th Scottish Licensed Trade News (SLTN) Awards. The McGinty’s Group was first launched in 2009 with their first pub, McGinty’s Meal An’ Ale and has witnessed significant growth increasing their portfolio to 10 venues including the popular No.10 Bar & Restaurant, The Silver Darling and The Grill.

The SLTN awards, which were hosted by comedian Jason Manford at the Glasgow Hilton, celebrated and recognised the rich and diverse businesses in hospitality and the tourism sector from around Scotland, presenting more than 20 of their coveted corkscrew trophies in front of an audience of 650.

Director of The McGinty’s Group, Allan Henderson, remarked, ‘It’s fair to say that we are over the moon to have received this prestigious award. After what has

been such a challenging time for the whole industry, it is recognition for all the hard work that our amazing team does on a daily basis.’

Maryculter’s Kitchen Maestro

One of Scotland’s most highly regarded chefs is now bringing his distinctive approach to the menu at Maryculter House. David’s career includes many of the country’s most prestigious hotels, Michelin-starred restaurants and a multitude of awards, including the Fine Dining Chef of the Year and Hotel Chef of the Year by the Scottish Hotel Awards and Contemporary Chef of the Year by the Scottish Food Awards.

‘My career was a happy accident. A school work placement at Stobo Castle, turned into an evening job, then a full time career. I really enjoyed the creativity and buzz of working in kitchens. As I have

progressed over the years, I now enjoy being able to pass on those skills and techniques to others.

‘Maryculter is a special place, so it is a real opportunity to highlight the importance of classically cooked food done well. Aberdeenshire has some of the best produce in the country.

‘I’d describe my style as being classical with a contemporary twist. My career has been based on fine dining, so Maryculter House has given me more versatility and scope to focus on other elements of dining, from fine dining and gastronomic afternoon teas and wedding menus.

‘When we’re creating a new dish for the menu, we look at what produce is available locally, rather than following the latest fad. Seasonality and quality are really important to me as is listening to feedback and what people enjoy. At the moment, our most popular winter dish is our Highland venison with braised red cabbage, pickled salsify, pan fried polenta, chestnut purée and a bramble jus.

‘I’d say that Jason Atherton’s Pollen Street Social is my all-time favourite restaurant and style of food, though the late Andrew Fairlie at Gleneagles was my mentor and continues to be a huge inspiration.

‘Like most chefs, I have a guilty food pleasure. If I’ve had a drink or two, I like to eat toasted focaccia, with black pudding, fried duck egg, a potato scone, streaky bacon and HP sauce. Messy and difficult to eat, but delicious!

‘Away from the kitchen, I like to spend time with my two young boys. We do a lot of hill walking with our dog or swimming which helps keep my head in balance. I've always enjoyed photography and art as a hobby and, naturally, I enjoy eating out and picking up the odd cook book!’

a balanced composition

instilled a particular kind of self-sufficiency in the way I navigate through life and my work expresses this.

‘After school in Kinlochbervie up in Sutherland, I studied with Eleanor White at Bridge House Art in Ullapool, completing a portfolio course and then attended Glasgow School of Art, graduating in 2009. We moved to Turriff from Glasgow in 2013 where I now work from my home studio.

She combines her work as an artist, with her role as a Pupil Support Worker in an Aberdeenshire school and she and her husband David have just welcomed a new born son.

‘My parents moved around a lot when I was a child, so I grew up all over Scotland – everywhere from Glasgow to Mull, Kirkcudbright to Sutherland. We even spent a year in France when my parents took part in a teaching exchange program. My mother is an artist, so I guess it was natural for me to use whatever was to hand to make things. Looking back, I think my background

‘As a painter, I’m mainly concerned with colour, composition and pattern. I love mixing paint and playing around with the juxtaposition of elements in my work. I find the work of Howard Hodgkin inspiring. It’s the apparent ease of abstract composition which belies the sensitivity and the power of his use of colour and also the literal content of his work that resonates with me. I also find the strong composition and colour use of artists like Matisse and Paula Rego appeal to me.

My recent work features the classic elements of still life but with the composition allowing for a more abstract balancing act of the elements. I work using a mix of direct observation

of objects such as flowers, vessels, patterned cloths and table tops. My work is strong and confident yet there’s a playful atmosphere too. I try to keep an open mind as I’m working on a piece. I’ve even been known to turn my canvas upside down and rework areas several times to arrive at the final composition. I mainly work in oils or acrylics, but also on paper to create large pieces using water based paints or mixed media. My works of paper are based on suggestion and instinct. I’m also interested in the possibilities offered by working with fabrics, pattern and colour to create bold compositions filled with joy, excitement and intuition.

Last year, I was thrilled to exhibit in Ullapool for three months at Ceilidh Place. It was even more special as it was a joint exhibition with my mother, who’s also a painter. She lives and works in Ullapool. Ten years ago they had a similar show in the same venue. Perhaps another in another ten years? Who knows? I took part in North East Open Studios (NEOS) last year for the first time and I’ve previously exhibited at the Compass Gallery in Glasgow and in a joint exhibition with Leanne Dollin at an talla Solais, a visual arts venue in Ullapool.

At the moment, the best way of seeing my work is by arranging a private viewing, by emailing sophiefisher@rocketmail.com

TOP GARDEN TRENDS FOR 2023

This year looks to continue and expand on our new found love of our outdoor living space. We’ve developed a genuine desire to balance beauty with nature, finding a path where both can work in harmony. We want to create environmentally healthy gardens with sustainability and the changing seasons at their heart.

Grow your own

Getting closer to our food source through growing our own. Even a small kitchen garden not only brings us pleasure but helps our bank balance. This can be achieved using simple raised beds, buying a veg trug or using large pots to grow anything from root vegetables to herbs. You could see about an allotment if you’re really keen and have the time to invest. Home grown really does taste better and it’s better for you too.

Combatting climate change

With our weather systems becoming ever more extreme, there is a greater focus on thinking about the plants we use and the job they do. Using drought tolerant plants such as salvias, rock roses, rosemary, thyme, lavender, and grasses will be popular as will plants that soak up the effects of heavy rainfall that deal with wet conditions in winter and dry in summer, such as grasses, rosa rugosa, geraniums, ferns, hosta iris, persicaria, willow, cornus and many more. Rain gardens have been trialled for a number of years now and are becoming more popular.

Mow less for diverse ecosystems

Leaving areas of grass to flower naturally or add in wildflower seed to create a habitat for wildlife and attract more insects is another huge trend. This approach will also help to absorb heavy rainfall. Rain gardens soak up 30% more water than grass!

Put down your spade

No dig borders are big news. The no dig approach, means exactly that and by not disturbing the structure of the soil it becomes more balanced, making it more productive.

Colour palette for plants

Rich, warm and bold colours to make interesting combinations (think tangerine against dark purples or deep blues for instance) but most of all, cottage garden-style /naturalistic planting where there are no rules and anything goes!

Material considerations

Patterns are in! Whether achieved through patterned paving and tiles, outdoor rugs and wall hangings, these create a Mediterranean or Greek feel, which is very on-trend. Outdoor furniture is reflecting an interior feel, providing a seamless connection from indoor to out and an extension of the home.

Smart design

The big trend in Garden Design for 2023 is less about geometric contemporary design with lots of obvious structure and more about thoughtful and innovative design that incorporates the necessary changes and ideas that will help to protect the planet.

Of course, there are parents who cope superbly with seventeen sugar-stuffed squabbling seven year olds running amok and treading cupcakes into their precious Persian rugs, but for most of us, outsourcing birthday parties is easier on the nervous system.

We’ve rounded up some ideas for a great party that won’t mean clearing up for the three days afterwards…

Hire a cinema

Cineworld offer private hires of cinema screens from £120, with a 30 person birthday party on a Sunday morning at the Beach Leisure Park coming in at £180. There’s a decent range of kids’ films to choose from. Maybe arrange to take your own snacks rather than let the guests have free reign in the pick-n-mix, or head to Burger King afterwards.

If you’d rather take a DIY approach, partysuppliesaberdeen.co.uk have an inflatable cinema room you can hire for £150 for 24 hours. You can add roped off VIP barriers, some bean bag chairs and a red carpet and make it a Premier Party for an additional £60. The projection system hooks up to a DVD player, so the choice of films is up to you.

Bounce around

Innoflate at the beach, Inverurie’s Skyline Trampoline Park, or JumpIn in Altens all offer the opportunity to tire out the guests, whether they’re toddlers or teenagers. Skyline offer a party package for 10 kids for £210, which includes an hour’s jump time and 30 minutes

in a party room with a big TV, pizza or hotdogs, chips, sweets and juice. Additional places for £21 each. They also do a package for toddlers. Find out more at skylinetrampoline.co.uk. Jump In Aberdeen do similar packages from £190 for ten guests, but also have soft play options for toddlers, a crazy glow area, climbing wall parties and there’s the Friday Night Takeover trampoline disco for kids over 12. Check the options at gojumpin.com. Innoflate swaps trampolines for huge inflatable structures and offers similar party packages from £18 -£20 per guest for up to 16s.

Moonlight swim

Strictly one for the summer, Stonehaven’s outdoor pool offers moonlight swims from 10pm-Midnight on selected dates. Combine staying up late with pizza, or fish and chips at the beach and a sleepover and you’ll have a party for your teens to talk about. For younger kids, book a session with inflatables or live music. The dates for the 2023 season aren’t out yet, but you can find out more at stonehavenopenairpool.co.uk

Animal magic

Lots of kids love animals. Hayfield Equestrian Centre offer birthday parties for 4-6 children aged five or over. These include an hour-long riding lesson in the sand arena and woods for £26 per child. Find out more at hayfield-club.com/activities/ Combine it with a trip to the Animal Corner at Hazelhead Park where the kids can get up close to a range of creatures from ponies to meerkats. Opening hours at facebook.com/Petscorneraberdeen/ Round off the day with a trip to the Park Café for drinks and something gooey. Find the menu at park-cafe.co.uk.

If dogs are more your child’s thing, then you can book a group kennel tour at Husky Haven to meet the sled dogs. It’s £10 for under 16s and £15 for adults. Book at Huskyhaven.co.uk

Meet Craig Forbes of The Mains of Drum Garden Centre

Mains of Drum is very much a family business. My younger brothers Grant and Cameron work in the construction side of the family business at Forbes Homes, where my father, Deryck, is at the helm. I’m the manager at The Mains of Drum, while my mum Audrey heads up our Gift and Clothing departments. My sister in law, Tammy, manages the Food Hall and HR departments, and her daughter Ava assists on the shop floor. Sometimes, even the family dogs are in the office!

Back in 2003, my dad was in the middle of a round of golf when he was offered the chance to purchase the Mains of Drum site. It had originally traded as Deeside Nurseries. When he saw the site, he realised the possibility of creating something a little different from your average garden centre. I had just returned to London from working overseas and was keen to embrace a new challenge and join the family business. After six years planning and preparation, we finally opened the doors in April 2009.

When we were designing the garden centre, we were very mindful of our location on the castle trail and Royal Deeside, so we were inspired by the local baronial architecture. We have 16 acres of land so we had ample space to beautifully landscape the grounds, adding the pond at the near the entrance, where you will often find swans, ducks and other wild life. We try to minimise our impact on the environment, recycling water, installing low energy lighting,

repurposing excess packaging and choosing environmentally conscious suppliers.

I love the variety of working here. I could be helping unload a delivery of plants that have just arrived from Italy one day, the next I could be outside in the grounds assisting cut grass and then by the end of the week I could be in the basement preparing and unpacking Christmas stock. My least favourite part of the job is dealing with the snow and ice in the customer car park over the winter months!

We’re extremely fortunate in having an incredibly loyal and established team, many of whom have been with us since the start. Everyone is truly committed to delivering the best customer service they possibly can while also ensuring the garden centre looks its best.

If I wasn’t working here, I’d liked to have followed in my aunt’s footsteps at the Foreign Office. It would have suited my love of overseas travel, too. I was visiting relatives in Cyprus last year and they convinced me to join a gym, against the odds. When I’m finished work, I tend to head there for a couple of hours.

As to the next few years, well, we did have plans in place to extend the garden centre, but thanks to the last few years, that has been on hold. I’m hopeful we may start work on this in the future.
