FROM THE EDITOR

Hello again, Welcome to summer.

Now that the bridges are fully opened again and most of the roadworks are done, we’re looking forward to making the most of getting out and about. It’s time to shake off our lethargy and get out and explore, whether it’s a visit of one of the shire’s towns for a bit of retail therapy, or a wander in the countryside, a stroll along the beach or an alfresco lunch in one of the many city parks or even Union Terrace Gardens now it has some grass laid down.

This issue is packed with ideas for enjoying the better weather and having a relaxing, laid-back summer. Slow the pace, savour everything the area has to offer and enjoy the simple pleasures life has to offer in summer. How about taking a Scottish road trip, or heading out for a waistband-busting Sunday lunch, maybe with a cocktail or two? We’ve rounded up a few days out with the kids now the long school holidays are stretching before us and ideas for enjoying the garden on a warm summer evening, fashion that’s perfect for holiday packing and even holiday hair.

Tennis is a wonderful form of exercise and good fun, provided you can get a rally going, master the scoring system and win a point or two. It can make a great family activity, providing physical, social and mental rewards both on and off the court. It’s one of those sports you can play from three to eighty three.

The Aberdeen Tennis Centre at Westburn Park offers year-round play, with eight floodlit outside courts and another eight inside. They also offer Padel lessons for kids – a sort of mini-tennis. Both the city council and Aberdeenshire council have public courts available in many of the

regions towns and villages. Some outdoor courts are free to use. Very often, it’s just a matter of turning up and hoping a court is available. Some clubs offer court times to the public, while others are available solely to their members.

If the social side appeals, you’re better off joining a local club. People are surprisingly welcoming and most clubs aren’t remotely stuffy or stuckup. You can find listing of courts, coaches and clubs at the Lawn Tennis Associations website at lta.org.uk. There are plenty of local tennis leagues if you’re the competitive type. You’ll be the British number 134 in no time!

You don’t need much to get started. No-one expects you to appear in pristine whites and frilly knickers. Shorts or jogging bottoms are fine. It does help to have the right size of racquet, though. Thistle Sports on Rose Street are the experts and can sort you out with a racquet which makes the most of your strengths as a player. They also offer restringing, grip fitting, clothing and tennis shoes as well as racquets for children starting at under £20. Adult racquets start at £45.

Give doubles a go. There’s a lot less ground to cover for a start and with any luck your partner will be able to return all those shots that went screaming past you. Once you’ve played for a while, you might want to arrange for classes or individual coaching. This will be available through your club or lta.org.uk has a list of accredited coaches.

ll packed? Passports? Tickets? Money?

Secret way of navigating the ever-changing road closures to reach the airport? Looks like you’re set for a stress-free start to your well-deserved break, provided your hair can be persuaded to behave once it’s in a warmer or

A surprising number of the world’s favourite holiday destinations have the kind of humidity levels that turns straight hair wavy and can make curly hair go springy or frizzy the moment you land. California, Las Vegas, Arizona and Florida, Athens and Cairo, India and Sri Lanka, the southern parts of Australia, Malaysia and Thailand all feature on the list of highest humidity, though Alaska comes top.

The moisture in humid air means that the hair’s keratin protein can form weak hydrogen bonds, with the end result that the hair folds back on itself at the molecular level at a greater rate,

Sarah at Salon 70 explained, ‘We all love the sun. We religiously apply our factor 50 but tend to forget our hair also needs protection. Wrapping a scarf around your hair, or wearing a widebrimmed hat is a great way to protect your hair from sun damage. I would also avoid chlorine and salt water which dries out the hair.

‘I always pack Wella Professionals’ Invigo Sun Care for Hair set which contains a trio of summer haircare essentials to help protect and moisturise hair before, during and after sun exposure. Look for a leave in conditioner spray that will keep your hair full of moisture and protect from UVA.

‘As for hair styling, I suggest trying a top knot during the day. You need to avoid doing the same style each day or your scalp could burn. Evening hair is tricky, nobody wants to blow dry, so wet-look styles are great. Plaits, ponytails or low buns can work for most occasions.’

Bloom’s Katie Davidson added, ‘Holiday hair should be low maintenance. French or Dutch plaits work well for beach or pool days. Use a conditioner or masque if possible. I suggest Keune’s Vital Nutrition range. It’s great for dry and dull hair and adds an extra layer of protection from sun and chlorine. It also protects your scalp from sun exposure. They also do a UV protection spray called Color Brillianz.

‘Try a loose textured ponytail for evenings. This can be easily created by making 3 sections and tying them off. The middle one needs to be tighter, twist the 2 outside sections and loop them over the ponytail and pull apart to loosen. Finish with a hairspray for hold and humidity protection.’

Put your hair products in ziplock bags and stow in your hold luggage to avoid the hassle of getting liquids through airport security. If you’re travelling light, look for travel packs of your favourite hair products in chemists or supermarkets or pick up a set of small plastic travel bottles and fill those.

Now all you have to do is decide if you really need six pairs of shoes for a week away…

Aboyne Games seeks women competitors

creating a capsule holiday wardrobe where everything co-ordinates & looks great together makes sense. 01 02 03 04 05 09 06 07 10

When it comes to holiday wardrobes, less is definitely more, particularly if you’re trying to keep it to cabin baggage only. Who wants to drag a huge case halfway across the planet – unless it’s empty and you plan to do a little shopping while you’re away? Most of us tend to squeeze a bit more into our suitcases that we really need, so creating a capsule holiday wardrobe where everything co-ordinates and looks great together makes sense.

Let’s start with what you don’t need. If you’re planning to spend all day by the pool at your villa, book in one hand and mojito in the other, you probably won’t be needing too many city outfits, nor do you really need five pairs of shoes for a week away. Similarly, a city break means you don’t need three bikinis and matching sarongs.

Choose your base neutral. Grey and black can leave you looking a bit washed out in sunnier climes, so consider blue or a natural shade, then choose a secondary colour. White or cream can pull a co-ordinated look together.

Think carefully about how many days you’re away for and how many different types of places you’ll be visiting. Discard anything too formal or informal. Perhaps stick to a couple of pairs of trousers and a long sundress or two with a toning jacket as a base, then add in sufficient tops and undergarments to carry you through. Blazers are good as they’ll go with everything. Add in one or two evening tops if you like. Footwear should be practical and limited to a couple of pairs. If you know you’ll end up sightseeing in jeans and trainers all week, then leave the Louboutins at home.

Wear your heavier items like jeans, walking shoes and a jacket on the journey. That way, they’re not counting in your baggage allowance. Planes are always chilly anyway and you’ll be happy you wore them when you land back in the city!

While a Scottish road trip may not have the romance of crossing America on Route 66, or the buttock-clenching terror of a single track route through the Andes, it does offer some great scenery and a chance to explore the country. Hire or borrow a campervan or motorhome and hit the road. You could even pack up the car with some camping equipment and rough it in the wilds, or check in to some of Scotland’s best hotels along the way for a more sophisticated experience. Here are some of our favourite routes…

34 | TRAVEL

Highland Spirit

If you have a week to ten days to spare, head up to Shetland on the Northlink Ferry out of Aberdeen.

Shetland offers some superb diving and water sports, including surfing and stand-up paddle boarding and a wealth of prehistoric heritage. Nature lovers can spot seals, whales, dolphins and otters as well as feisty little Shetland ponies. Noss Nature Reserve is home to sixty thousand squabbling seabirds, so a hat is strongly advised. There are plenty of outlying islands to visit too.

There’s something for everyone from the fire festivals in January, to the Northern Lights, the food festival in October and this year, the Tall Ships are visiting form 26-29th July.

From Shetland, it’s back on the ferry to Orkney, which offers up a great road-trip blend of history, local artists and craftspeople and artisanal food and drink. Unmissable attractions include Skara Brae, Maes Howe, the Ring of Brodgar and the chapel built and decorated by Italian prisoners of war. Orkney abounds in designer-makers, particularly jewellery makers, and there’s a host of galleries and craft shops worth visiting. If you’re looking for something for your home, visit Leo Kerr mirrors, settle on a traditional Orkney chair from Scapa Crafts, or pop in to the sublimely named Harray Potter.

Back to the mainland. The short crossing from Stromness to Scrabster is sometimes challenging for those who get sea-sick, but the journey through the empty reaches of Scotland’s far north are worth it. From here you have a choice, you can head through Thurso, perhaps with a detour to the Castle of Mey and John O’Groats before picking up the coast road through Wick, Brora and Helmsdale and through Dornoch, the Black Isle and Inverness, or you can head right to the beach and Caravan Park at Bettyhill. Pick up some provisions in Tongue, then take the A836 down the banks of Loch Loyal, through Altnaharra and past Loch Shin. It’s a deserted road and a desolate landscape where the only other living thing might be a Golden Eagle soaring overhead. The empty miles make your first sighting of Lairg feel like Las Vegas. From here, you’ll pass through Bonar Bridge, the Black Isle and back over to Moray.

Southern Comfort

If you’re looking for a shorter break that packs a lot in, then consider the South West Coastal 300. It’s a gentle route that winds through green hills, picturesque villages and beguiling coastlines. The route includes Galloway Forest Park, Scotland’s first Dark Park, which is perfect for star gazing. You can meander through castles and picnic in the ruins of Sweetheart Abbey.

The route offers plenty of sandy beaches in the Mull of Galloway, though Rockcliffe’s stony strand offers the chance to roll up your trousers and guddle about like a seven-year-old with a shrimping net, exploring for strange marine creatures.

If art and literature’s more your style, then Kirkcudbright’s many galleries and the bookshops of Wigtown should be on your list of stops. The route heads north and inland to pass through Wanlockhead and Leadhills with a narrow gauge railway and a mining museum. You can have a go at gold-panning and, if you’re lucky, your finds may just pay for the trip!

I’m married and have three beautiful children, so, like many working parents, most of my free time seems filled up with kids’ activities. I enjoy watching my two boys play football on Sundays, when we can. My wife and I like going out locally for some lunch and we try to visit our family in Liverpool as much as possible. Like most kids of my generation, I wanted to be a footballer. Then, entering my teens I wanted to be a DJ. I’m still passionate about football and I’m a big Liverpool fan, naturally!

When I was growing up I vividly remember my uncle’s restaurant. The atmosphere there was electric. The food was amazing and when I looked into the kitchen seeing how busy and organised chefs were, that inspired me to become a chef one day. I always wanted my own restaurant. It’s still my ambition, now.

The best thing about working at Mal are the people. We have a fantastic hard working team behind the scenes. You spend the majority of your time with them and even though it’s fast-paced, challenging and demanding, we always find a way to break the tension, enjoy the shift and smash each service out the park. I’m really lucky to have a job where there’s nothing about it that I don’t love.

The food at the Malmaison is no nonsense, made with great traditional methods with some modern influences - nothing beats seasonality and well balanced food! My own favourite

is our Tuna tartare starter, with avocado, mango salsa, black sesame, soy and lime, pickled ginger, wasabi and avocado whip. It’s a mouth-watering, must-try dish. Though if I could have dinner with anyone, I’d be chatting to Denzel Washington over a plate of roast leg of lamb with all the trimmings.

We have a great reputation with our local customers, who are always looking for something special. That’s why we offer a wider range of steaks from Donald Russell, which are prepared on our Josper Grill and we offer delicious specials to showcase the best seasonal ingredients.

The Josper Grill originated from Spain, it is an amazing piece of equipment combining a high temperature oven with a chargrill, which allows the meat to get that delicious caramelised colour on the outside whilst still remaining succulent on the inside. We use odourless, smokeless charcoal and briquettes in our Josper which also gives that BBQ flavour to the meat. We also apply our secret rub to our steaks to make them taste even better!

WEST END WONDERS

MALMAISON

Sunday lunch at Malmaison is a bit of an institution, but in typically affable Mal style. They make doing things well look effortless. Start with a visit to the Chef’s table which comes loaded with an unlimited selection of appetisers, including smoked and cured salmon, jewelled cous cous, Serrano ham and a zingy cucumber yuzu salad. Opt for the 21 day dry aged sirloin or half a roast chicken for the main course, or choose from the menu which includes smoky baby back BBQ ribs and an oozy mac and cheese with spring greens. Leave room for dessert if you can, then head home and spend the afternoon snoozing on the sofa.

No.10 BAR & RESTAURANT

No. 10 Bar and Restaurant offers a choice of Scotch beef rib roast or a supreme of roast chicken, both served with crisp roast potatoes, skirlie, seasonal veg and Yorkshire puds. They also have extra sides for sharing. Vegans and Vegetarians can choose from the main menu, which also includes some delicious fish dishes.

AMUSE

Amuse celebrates its first anniversary this July and chef Kevin Dalgliesh’s team has already scooped up a mention in the Michelin Guide and two AA rosettes, so you know you’re in for a special treat. Start with a glass of Tattinger, a Bloody Mary or a Sunday Mimosa while you ponder the menu. They have great mocktails too. The menu changes weekly, taking advantage of produce from local farms and suppliers just as it reaches its peak. It also reflects the restaurant’s commitment to sustainability and lowering their carbon footprint, but mainly means that what comes out the kitchen is superb. The signature Sunday roast, an aged roast sirloin that comes with perfectly cooked vegetables, rich gravy, incredible roast potatoes and cloudlike Yorkshire puddings is one not to miss. There’s a choice of five or six main dishes and there’s always a vegetarian option amongst them.

The Albyn offers a succulent roast sirloin and you can upgrade to a giant Yorkshire pudding that makes a useful fortress designed to repel the barbarian hoards tempted by your crispy roast potatoes. If you can’t wait, then try their Boozy Brunch, which runs from 10-12 on Saturday and Sunday.

Who doesn’t love a Sunday lunch? Especially if someone else is saddled with all the cooking and clearing up! Here’s our pick of the best places for a relaxed time, and fabulous food whether you’re looking for something traditional or more unusual…

CITY CENTRESUPER STARS

McGINTY'S

Our city centre picks lie at each end of Union Street. McGinty’s is great for meeting up with friends or for families with older kids and hearty appetites. The menu’s packed with pub grub favourites, but done with imagination and great flavours. The Steak and Ale Pie and Haddock and Chips both come recommended and there’s lots to tempt vegetarians and vegans.

THE ESSLEMONT

The Esslemont occupies the old E&M building at the bottom end of Union Street. You’ll find some innovative cocktails and a quirky menu that combines Scottish tapas and sharing plates with mains that make the most of local produce. Their Sunday Roast menu offers a choice of roast chicken or roast ribeye of Scotch beef with Yorkshire puddings, roast potatoes, skirlie, veg and red wine gravy. If you’re feeling famished, you can add extra sides too.

Other city centre choices for a relaxed Sunday lunch include tapas at Café Andaluz and street food, superlative cocktails and slow jams at Resident-X in Marischal Square.

Rosemount’s the perfect place to spend a lazy Sunday, meandering round the shops, having lunch then strolling in the park. Maybe round the day off with a drink at the Queen Vic or some of the best ice cream in the city from Crolla’s Gelateria? You can pootle around Victoria Park working up an appetite then tuck in to some of the city’s tastiest seasonally-inspired Scottish menus at Milton on the Corner or try Tarragon’s excellent seafood dishes.

GARLOGIE INN

There’s nothing better than lunch in the country. Work up an appetite with a gentle hike or riverside stroll first. For us, the Garlogie Inn is the perfect choice. Owners Thelma and John Quinn have been welcoming diners for over 30 years, so they know a thing or two about hearty food and a great atmosphere. The menu is incredibly varied with traditional favourites and plenty of choice for the non-carnivores. Try the grilled rib-eye Steak, complete with mushrooms tomatoes, onion rings and chips, or give it a Scottish twist with Chicken Braigiewell – a plump chicken breast stuffed with haggis and black pudding and served in a creamy whiskytinged wild mushroom sauce. Vegetarians will enjoy the earthy butternut squash and beetroot wellington in flaky puff pastry. Desserts are a bit of a treat too.

THE MARCLIFFE AT PITFODELS

The Marcliffe at Pitfodels has long been known for its great food and impeccable service. For a five star hotel, their Sunday lunch menu is surprisingly good value. There’s a choice of sirloin, roast chicken or roast pork, complete with root vegetables and all the trimmings. If you want to push the boat out, try the Surf and Turf, a fillet steak with five generously plump langoustines. Vegetarians may find themselves torn between three menu choices, but can also opt for a little of each. Sadly, the same option doesn’t extend to the dessert menu, so you need to persuade your fellow guests to choose things you want to try too.

MARYCULTER HOUSE HOTEL

Maryculter House Hotel offers a convivial country house setting and a Sunday Roast well worth sampling. The melt in the mouth beef comes from Charles McHardy, who’ve been butchers for four generations. Add in locally grown seasonal veg, fluffy Yorkshire puds and moreish roast potatoes as well as enticing options for vegetarians and fish lovers and you have a lunch to remember.

Family Law team

HOW TO HAVE A HEALTHY SEPARATION

Deciding to separate isn’t easy. It’s a time of stress and anxiety. However, there are ways of managing separation that can help the transition go more smoothly.

Firstly, don’t make any rash decisions. If you’re not certain that your relationship has broken down irretrievably, consider counselling.

It is always advisable to take advice from a specialist family lawyer before separating so that you have a clear understanding of your legal rights and obligations. They will help you identify your priorities, such as payment of household bills and supporting children financially. You should not make any significant changes to your day to day living or financial arrangements, dispose of any assets or sign any legal documents without first taking legal advice. Take some breathing space to think about your family’s long-term needs and interests.

There are many approaches to separation including Collaborative Family Law, Mediation, Arbitration and traditional negotiation. Family law specialists

are committed to problem solving and constructive dispute resolution which can lead to a far better outcome for you and your family.

Financial agreements will have an impact for years to come, so it is crucial that you make informed decisions after careful consideration with your lawyer and financial adviser.

Separation can be traumatic and confusing for children. Their welfare must be prioritised and they should be shielded from conflict. Remain courteous and communicate well with your partner for their sake. Do not badmouth your partner to anyone and don’t send inflammatory messages on social media or email as these can be used against you.

Separation will inevitably be challenging but following these tips may assist in achieving a healthier separation.

to get thebestfromyourgarden Garden designerKirstyMcLeanshares on long summer evenings…
how

This is the perfect time to enjoy your garden and make the most of the outdoors. Here are some ways you can enhance your outdoor living and create a beautiful and welcoming garden:

If you enjoy hosting parties or having guests over, consider zoning your space and creating an entertaining area within your garden. These spaces can be formal or informal, depending on your preference. You can set up fixed or portable outdoor furniture, a fire pit, a BBQ grill, or even an outdoor bar. Drape a string of festoon or fairy lights onto any structure or fence and you will instantly create a party atmosphere!

If you’d prefer to relax on your own, consider a hammock, swing sofa or a lounger, complete with side table for a glass of wine and chill out with a book, your favourite podcast or just watch the clouds drift by.

If you love to cook, consider creating an outdoor kitchen. This space can include a pizza oven, grill, smoker or BBQ, shelving and outdoor worktops using polished granite, slate or stainless steel for prep areas that are easy to clean. Add outdoor sockets to be able to use other appliances.

Adding night-scented plants to your garden can enhance the atmosphere and create a welcoming ambiance. These plants include fragrant flowers such as jasmine, Regal lily, sweet rocket, honeysuckle and annuals including nicotiana and night scented stocks, all of which release their scent in the evening evening.

Consider creating a paradise for relaxation and contemplation, just for you. You can build a garden sanctuary by adding a gazebo, pergola or garden building for activities such as yoga practice, reading or simply ‘being’ in nature.

Decide on your garden's style based on your preferences. If you love a neat, tidy-looking garden, go with a formal garden. If you like a lush and more natural setting, an informal garden is good for you. Supporting the local wildlife who share your space. Add natural water features like a shallow pond complete with a branch or something to let wildlife climb back out! Make or purchase a feeding station or nesting boxes for birds. Plant native perennials and wildflowers to support pollinating insects. All you need is a pile of decaying twigs and branches in a corner of the garden to create a great habitat for all sorts of insects.

Whatever you choose to do, enjoy your garden this summer by making make the most of your outdoor living space. Relax and unwind, slow the pace. Being in nature and the outdoors can help generate good health, happiness and contentment!

60 | IN-BRIEF

SHADES OF JADE

My interests in textiles and digital printing really stemmed from my studies at RGU. I realised I had a skill for pattern design, and I fell in love with the idea that a simple illustration could be applied to everything from packaging, book covers and branding. So I began to try my designs on fabric, as my course wasn't textiles, learning how to sew and work with fabrics was a big step for me.

I make skinny scarves that double up as headbands and can be worn in about eight different ways. My cosy infinity scarves and snoods are lined with upcycled fluffy blankets. I also make eye masks and scrunchies and I’m hoping to add interchangeable bag straps, tapestry illustration prints, keyrings and possibly DIY craft kits to my range.

I start with a hand drawn sketch, often inspired by neo-traditional tattoos, or childhood memories of my grandparent’s garden and the stories they told. I create my patterns digitally, then they are professionally printed onto fabric. I cut, sew and package all the final products myself. It’s a real handmade process.

I’m currently exploring venues for workshops and exhibitions and I’ve been creating little stuffed fabric fish to promote my zero waste approach. I plan to spread these across Aberdeen’s top visitor attractions for free to encourage people to explore and enjoy this summer.

I hope to be able to appear in markets held by the V&A Dundee and I’d love to be included in the shop at Aberdeen Art Gallery. Ultimately, I aim to run my own studio space, hosting craft workshops for everything from book binding to paper marbling and acrylic pouring. For now, though, you can see and buy my work from my website.

PHOTOGRAPHER DONNA MURRAY STEPS OUT FROM BEHIND THE CAMERA...

Ifirst fell in love with photography aged 14 when my art teacher introduced me to an old film camera at school in Dyce. Every lunchtime would be spent developing negatives and printing photographs. I won a photography competition and bought my own camera with the prize money. I always had a camera in my hand from then on, photographing plays and events at school.

I nearly studied Geography, but decided to follow my heart, taking an HND at Aberdeen College before a BA Hons degree in Film and Photography at Napier University in Edinburgh. I adored living in Edinburgh and did a lot of growing up there.

I moved home to Aberdeen and wrote to the Evening Express asking for work experience as a press photographer. They took me on for a week and had a job opening for a trainee press photographer. I worked there for three years photographing everything from sporting events to concerts. One of my photos of a seagull stealing crisps from a shop in castle gate went viral!

I travelled to Canada with a friend where we worked as tour photographers in the Rockies, before exploring America and South America. On my return, I decided to set up my own photography business.

Friends were getting married and didn’t have a photographer so I asked if I could document their day and I loved every

minute of it. Between word of mouth, social media and leaving business cards in every coffee shop in Aberdeen, I slowly got bookings! I focus mainly on weddings but also shoot commercial, property and portraiture. I also enjoy photographing Trend fashion shoots, it’s always a fun, creative day!

I think a great wedding photographer is someone who can work under pressure, think creatively and have many plans

There are lots of different styles of wedding photography and it’s important the couple choose what they love, whether it’s dark and moody or natural and fun. It’s important to click with your photographer and vice versa as you spend a lot of time on such an important day with them. The more relaxed the couple, the better the photos.

Personally, I’m drawn to catching natural moments, documenting a day as it happens but with some posed images for good measure. I keep my editing natural so when you look back in years to come it’s a true representation of your day.

In winter, I get to spend some time on personal projects. I love portraiture photography and meeting people. I had the best day photographing a local artist and her game keeper husband back in February, we ambled around Finzean estate with their 15 dogs while I documented it. I already have some projects in mind for next winter.

When I’m not working I’m spending time with my partner, my son and our whippet, Iggy. We enjoy exploring Aberdeenshire and venturing around Scotland. I like to bag munros with friends and visit coffee shops and eat cake!

up their sleeve. They need to know their camera and the settings they need for every situation the day throws at them. On top of that you have to be personable, fun and passionate about creating the best memories for your clients.
