Easter welcome as Wretham gets together for visitors Wretham’s village community spirit comes to the fore at the Easter weekend as three different venues throw open their doors to holiday weekend visitors.

Across Church Road at Wretham Lodge, the former Rectory, the gardens will be open on both Easter Sunday and Monday from noon until 5pm. The tranquil and beautiful gardens have been a fixture in the annual calendar of the National Gardens Scheme and are continually developed for the pleasure of both their owners and visiting garden enthusiasts.

On both Easter Sunday and Easter Monday, village hall, church and Wretham Lodge gardens will offer a warm welcome to people from a wide area.

Wretham stands almost midway between Thetford and Watton on the A1075.

In the Village Hall, at the entrance to Church Road, local craft experts will display a wide range of crafts, with products for sale, on both days between 10am and 5pm, with refreshments available for visitors.

Croxton Road Community Association Litter Pick Saturday 23rd March at 10am. Meet outside The Church of the Nazerene.

At St Ethelbert’s Church, further down Church Road, there is the chance to see a church full of Easter flowers put into the building by members of Wretham Ravers women’s group and their friends. A second hand book stall and homemade cakes and refreshments will be served between 11am and 5pm on both days in a church building approaching its 150th anniversary after its Victorian rebuild.

Coming to Thetford

'It is rare to see acting of this quality. I would recommend it to any church.' Rev. Graham Peacock.

Easter Sunday 7pm at The Church on the Way

'Be prepared to be moved and challenged.’ Rev. Helen Hoe.

A Thetford Christians Together event Entrance is FREE but there will be an offering. Refreshments available

'You made us feel we were there.' Rev. Malcolm Peach.

Impossible God

'Unforgettable... a very professional and imaginative performance.' Joan Appleton, former principal of the Mackenzie School of Speech and Drama, Cambridge.

is a one-man passion play written by Frank Topping and performed by Mark Topping

'I imagine most people who come to a performance, like me, wonder how you will sustain our interest in all those characters and whether you will say anything new. You offered us a novel way of looking at the passion which was gripping and provocative.' Rev. Rob Hufton. The Play is based on the devotional book ‘An Impossible God’ written and adapted for the stage by author, actor, broadcaster and Methodist minister,

Frank Topping.

Impossible God recreates the world of those who witnessed the passion. Palestine AD32 is brought to life as numerous characters relive their experience of the events.

Frank is perhaps best known for his 'Pause For Thought' appearances on the BBC Radio 2 Terry Wogan breakfast show. Apart from his role as the priest who married Ken and Deirdre Barlow (making Coronation Street history as the first screen vicar who had been ordained in real life). His TV work includes his own series, 'Topping on Sunday' and 'Sunday Best'.

Impossible God is a powerful exploration of the historical events at the heart of the Christian faith. This inspiring one-man play challenges us to look again at Jesus of Nazareth and consider the meaning of his life, death and resurrection.

He is also remembered for his partnership with Donald Swann in the West End production of their show "Swann With Topping". He has written 16 books and countless radio and television scripts.

Mark Topping is a professional actor who has appeared as John Wesley on BBC TV’s Songs of Praise and Flog It! In 2008 he was Che Guevara at the King’s Theatre in Gloucester.

Thetford Past and Present

A century ago, Minstergate was full of the sights, sounds and smells of Charles Burrell & Sons ‘St Nicholas Works’ where a variety of steam-powered engines and other machines were produced. By the time that the past photograph was taken in the mid-1970s many of Burrell’s old buildings had been used as a canning factory for three decades. Thetford parkrun

Lynda Turner said: “It’s a fantastic way of committing yourself to a weekly programme of exercise in a way that’s great fun, motivational and with a distance of just 5km; it is achievable for most people. We hope the Thetford parkrun will be just as successful as it is in all the other locations across the country.”

Hit the great outdoors and get in great shape when the FREE weekly parkrun event comes to Thetford! ‘parkrun’ is a programme aiming to get people fit and active with a 5km course once a week. parkrun started in 2004 with just 13 participants in Bushy Park, Teddington. Since then, parkrun events have taken off in a big way with 158 locations across the country and 1875 runs.

Melanie Floyd, Event Director, said: “This fantastic initiative caters for all levels of runner/jogger/walker. Whether you’re putting on your trainers for the first time or have a passion for marathons, parkrun offers something for everybody.

Abbey Meadows will host Thetford’s parkrun every Saturday from 9am, and is open to all ages, abilities, shapes and sizes – what better way to get into shape in preparation for the summer or simply improve your health. Participants will need to register on www.parkrun.org.uk to get a unique bar code which they will need to bring with them each time they take part.

The great thing about parkrun is that it is run by the community for the community. Initially, we need 10 volunteers to get the event off the ground. The volunteers will receive training and help organising the weekly parkrun event. You don’t have to be a runner to volunteer, just someone who may have an hour or two spare every other Saturday morning who we can call upon to help.”

Breckland Council, Moving Thetford Forward, Active Norfolk, Thetford Town Council and parkrun are supporting the initiative and need your help to get the exciting and energetic programme off the ground.

For more information on taking part in the parkrun or if you are interested in becoming a volunteer please contact Melanie Floyd on 07702 493492 or e-mail thetfordhelpers@parkrun.com.

New Era of Skin Care Innovation

Nails by

l l

As consumers we are regularly bombarded with the latest developments and innovations, whether it be in cosmetics, in the form of TV adverts for the latest ingredients in a shampoo, to technological advances in phones and computers.

Skincare is no different; It’s a constant stream of development, from discoveries of innovative ingredients to really change the way the products work, to advances in the way in which machine driven systems can offer ground breaking treatments in the salon. There is no doubt that cosmeceutical ingredients and dermatologist approved products will be the mainstay of the future of skincare. One of the newest ingredients to make a breakthrough are peptides. They are in several result driven antiageing products and treatments and they are highly effective at penetrating into the skin to help stimulate the production of new collagen and elastin. Up until now a sun screen with factor 30 has been the highest safe limit to avoid over sensitising the skin with more chemicals. But the good news is that Oleosome technology is revolutionising the skin care and sunscreen market. Oleosomes are naturally occurring spheres of plant oils and vitamin E found in safflower seeds. These can be used in sunscreen formulas and can boost SPF30 to SPF50, with the Oleosomes delivering agents to the skin in a time release fashion.

Home Visiting Foot Health Practitioner

The inclusion of antioxidant protection using vitamins C and E has been shown in clinical studies to support the SPF by neutralising damaging free radicals generated by the sun and not screened by the SPF values.

Pupils at Thetford Grammar Junior School have been busy taking part in the annual RSPB’s Big Schools’ Birdwatch. With binoculars and clipboards

The final results show that pigeons and blackbirds were the most frequently seen birds around Thetford Grammar School and this information will now be sent off to the RSPB database.

at the ready they have been helping to count the birds around school in order to contribute towards the national survey that takes a ‘snapshot’ of bird numbers across the UK. After an assembly that taught the children special techniques for identifying birds, including by recognition of their bird song, it was then the pupils’ job to identify and count their sightings. “After a slow start due to the recent snowfall, many of our pupils from ages 4 – 11 have enjoyed spending time outside looking closely at the birdlife that visit the school grounds. We are lucky that we have plenty of outdoor space and greenery where the birds like to feed!” – Mrs Butler-Hand, Head of Junior Department.

Last month we spoke about getting cats neutered and we have just had to take in our first pregnant female. She is barely more than a kitten herself. Some people still seem to think cats can’t be neutered until they are a year old but they can be done from approx 4 months on advice from your vet. At 6 months it could already be too late! We have had some really nice items donated, including a World Atlas from The Times, still in it’s shrink wrap, brand new, £150 when purchased. A lovely Winstanley cat which are collectors items, a chocolate fountain only used once, to name but a few. If you are interested in any of these please ring us or come to our Spring Fayre on 9th March in St Cuthbert’s Church Hall, Thetford, 9.30am to 1.30pm. There will be clothes, some new, tombola, bric a brac, crafts, books and of course, cats/kittens looking for loving homes. We are always pleased to receive just about anything for our sales, we can also make use of drinks cans, thank you to several people around town who are collecting these for us, old kettles etc which we can cash in as metal for the cats. Sheets, towels, clothes, even old worn out items, which we can sell to the textile man, also books, puzzles, print cartridges and unwanted gifts. Nothing is wasted.

Aged about 2yrs, she loves a game and looks so cute as she wanders around because of her short legs, we call her our little munchkin. The local volunteers were enthusiastic and committed. Many work parties later, support from all different parts of Thetford and beyond, some serious fundraising and, nature taking its course, the garden is now a peaceful haven.

Thetford’s Forgotten Garden Have you visited Thetford’s Forgotten Garden? It is a walled, wildlife garden in the old part of Thetford. Nestled in the grounds of Ford Place Nursing Home in Ford Street, it is open to the public Thursday to Sunday, all year round. Fourteen years ago the previous owners of Ford Place wanted to build sheltered housing in the walled garden but discovered that they would never get planning permission because of it’s historical importance. Thetford’s heritage officer heard of this and offered to take the garden on if he could get help from the community. He approached a local garden designer, looked for funds and put the word out that help was needed to reclaim this gorgeous walled garden. The rest, they say, is history!

Initially, the idea was that the garden would be a showcase for a range of our beautiful native plants but when rabbits moved in they had different ideas! After lots of experimentation, there are now plants that the rabbits leave. However, the glory of the garden is a small orchard of old Apple varieties – with beautiful blossom in the Spring and great crops from August onwards. A Quince avenue, Medlars, Bee Hives and a maturing pond also delight visitors. From the beginning, the group was interested in educating visitors about the joys and benefits of gardening for wildlife. They had many events over the years but wanted something more permanent and recently a wonderful opportunity arose. The group is now small and was looking for new volunteers but something better came along. St Christopher’s Primary School in Red Lodge was looking for an ‘outside classroom’ and was delighted with the garden and rebuilt sheds. Meetings ensued and the school is now planning to make Thetford’s Forgotten Garden it’s ‘outside classroom’ The future got even better when Barchester Healthcare, Ford Place owners, agreed to involvement with the school but also to employing a gardener and keeping the garden open to the public. The Forgotten Garden group is delighted and has now decided to disband as the future of Thetford’s Forgotten Garden is secure and very exciting. It wants to thank all the people and organizations who have supported the garden in so many different ways over the years and those who sponsored and planted all the trees which are now maturing and so beautiful. Thanks particularly to

Barchester Healthcare and manager, Muriel HadleyBrown, who have secured a bright future for the garden. Now over to Kathryn McMurtary, Head of St Christopher’s

Thetford (Breckland) Lioness Club

Education involves encouraging children to engage and enthuse about their learning. Many of the more formal skills of reading, writing etc are strengthened and developed when used in an exciting way. Thetfords Forgotten Garden gives us that opportunity. We aim to use the site, including the rebuilt sheds as an off-site classroom to develop art, science and creative writing. The grounds are simply inspiring and I’m sure the children will enjoy a chance to develop their skills in this wonderful “secret” garden. Alongside our normal curriculum we intend to develop social awareness and this gives us an ideal opportunity to integrate with members of the local community in a safe and secure environment, so if you visit you may find there are a number of eager children ready to chat. We will not intrude on those who want peace and quiet, in fact one of our missions as a Church school is to introduce sessions of silent retreat for the children to reflect on their busy lives, something we all need to do to carry our learning forward. We also hope to forge links with the home on an informal basis allowing two generations to meet and socialise. Finally for those worried about lots of children taking over the area we aim to use the area wisely and effectively with only a positive impact on the garden. Indeed we are very proud at St Christopher’s School of the behaviour of our pupils and look forward to a long relationship with the Forgotten Garden, Ford Place,Thetford.

Queen's Jubille:Template 26/02/2013 01:57 Page 1

Thetford Inner Wheel

Queen's Jubilee The Thetford Society organised a tribute to Queen Elizabeth II's sixty year reign by planting a short avenue of six established London Plane trees near the Gentle Bridge. Each tree was planted to represent each decade of her reign.

Liz Hodgson Vice-President, Susan Glossop - Town Manager and Carol Goodchild President.

At the February meeting at Wereham House Hotel Susan Glossop gave us an insight into the nine years she had worked in Thetford. Having come as Town Manager she took up the role of Deputy Town Clerk and finally temporary Town Clerk. She had had a busy time but there were still a few ideas left unfulfilled. The club has recently donated money, raised from various fundraising events, to the Thetford Food Bank, Fulmerston Family and Children’s centre, Acorn Trust, as well as national charities for Epilepsy Research, Leukaemia and lymphoma research, Brainwave, and Sightsavers. They have also sent tubes of toothpaste to the Mercy Ships charity urgently needed for their Dental project in West Marian de Bass - Club Correspondent Africa.

Mayor Terry Lamb and the Shadwell Estate's Financial Director, Chris Kennard, carried out the opening ceremony despite the recent rains trying to put a damper on the proceedings. Society members and Town Councillors braved the elements to applaud the commemoration. Barcham, the Tree Specialist from Ely, kindly donated the six trees. Other costs were met by donations from Society members including corporate members, the Town Council, the Shadwell Estate, Simark and Leaping Hare. The commemorative plaque will be displayed near the river end of the avenue.

Compensation for criminal injuries... Many victims of assault, and other violent crimes, suffer serious injuries but they are often unable to identify their attackers. If the attackers are identified it is rare for the attacker to have the financial means to pay their victims compensation. Does this mean that victims of violent crimes have no means of seeking compensation? No. Victims of violent crimes can apply for compensation to the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA), a government-funded body which was established to compensate those who suffer physical or psychological injury as a result of violent crimes. Awards can be made even if the attacker is unidentified. So what is a crime of violence? The most obvious example is an assault, but others include arson, poisoning and the deliberate use of an animal or a vehicle as a weapon.

that the person applying was a blameless victim. The CICA will consider the value of the claim and make an award based on a tariff. Compensation awards currently range from £1,000 up to £500,000. It is important to get advice from a specialist solicitor before making an application to the CICA, to stand the best chance of an application succeeding and receiving an appropriate award as the CICA often reject applications. In many cases the CICA make low offers. A specialist solicitor will ensure that the appropriate medical evidence and witness statements are obtained to ensure that the best award possible is achieved. We recently dealt with a case where the CICA initially offered only £47,500, but with persistence and consistent referencing to a catalogue of specialist medical evidence we had obtained, the CICA increased their offer to £368,000. Taylor Vinters specialise in personal injury and criminal injury claims and we are a toprated personal injury practice in Legal 500 covering the whole of East Anglia. If you or anyone you know has been injured as a result of a violent crime or accident, contact Mick Upton on 01223 225 205 for a free, no obligation consultation.

To be eligible to apply for compensation, applicants must have reported the crime to the police without delay and they must cooperate with the police investigation. Applications should be made as soon as possible (usually within 2 years of the crime). The CICA will investigate the incident to ensure that a crime of violence took place and

Sharons Easter Hunt:Layout 1 25/02/2013 19:52 Page 1

No car? Short of money? Have kids that need entertaining over Easter? Worried what you are going to do with them so they have fun?

There will be 3 age groups: Under 5's in a more confined location within the town centre, 6-10 and over 11. The cost will be £1 each and entry forms will be available from myself, any adult member of Thetford 's St John Ambulance, Chilterns Estate Agents, Select, Leaping Hare and hopefully your child's school. Entry forms will be available in English, Polish and Portuguese. All children must be accompanied on the hunt by an adult.

Well look no further........on Easter Saturday, March 30th, between 10am and 4pm Thetford is having a huge Easter Hunt in the town centre. With over 20 of our local shops, plus all of our lovely tourist attractions, taking part this will give Mums and Dads the chance to shop and browse while your little ones hunt!!!

We would like to say a huge thank you already to all the people who have come on board, Chilterns, producing our posters and organising printing for us, Simply Reiki for donating £75 towards the prizes and the shops and attractions for helping us to run this. There is still time for YOU to get involved either as a business or as a family or if you simply want to donate. Please spread the word - get your groups involved, get your entry forms and come into town and have yourself a great day out.

Every child who enters is guaranteed an Easter egg at the end of the hunt when they hand in their completed form. Plus there will be an amazing Easter prize for the one lucky person in each age group if their name is pulled out of the hat at the end of the day.

The more people that enter the better it will be and the more chance you have of us organising something else in the summer!!!!

The idea of the whole hunt for the older children will be to solve cryptic clues to lead them to a particular shop or attraction and once inside they will have to find either a stamp or they may well get a spot prize!

For more details or to get your entry forms please contact me Sharon Thompson on 07940029510, shaz_eng_uk@hotmail.com or look us up on Facebook:Thetford's EGGcellent adventure! Belmont House, 20 King Street, Thetford IP24 2AP Tel: 01842 751975 • 07802 701911 www.dadsarmythetford.org.uk

Plans are well underway now for Easter Saturday 30th March 10 – 3pm, when both museums reopen for the season and show off their new displays – the biggest one of course and the one everyone is waiting for will be Jones’s Van. We can’t wait to show her off so why not come and join us – she will begin the day at the Burrell museum (10 –1pm) and then travel through town to the Dad’s Army museum, where she will stay until 4pm. We are currently working on several new displays at the Burrell and Dave and Esther will provide 1940s music and dancing at the Dad’s Army, where of course Marigolds Tea Rooms will be open. Both museums will also be taking part in Thetford’s EGGcellent Adventure. Please mention the About Thetford Community Magazine when responding to advertisements

Grammar School Swimming:Template 23/02/2013 16:11 Page 1

Annual House Swimming Gala On Friday 8th February, Thetford Grammar Junior School held their annual House Swimming Gala at Breckland Leisure Centre. All pupils aged between 3 ½ and 11 had been involved in weekly swimming lessons and the Gala was a culmination and celebration of their sporting efforts. All of the children took part in competing for their house in a variety of events including relays, single length set styles and freestyle races. The younger children competed in age appropriate events including their favourite ‘Kipper Sandwich’ and ‘Woggle’ races. Both parents and pupils cheered the competitors along with a great team spirit being shown amongst the pupils. The final scores were close but the overall winner was the house team Millingtons. William Pettit, the House Captain for Millingtons said, “The swimming gala was great and so much fun! I am so thrilled that my house won and congratulations to everyone who competed.” Mrs Butler-Hand, Head of the Junior Department, awarded the winning house their trophy during the presentation ceremony and congratulated all of the pupils for their hard work and sportsmanship.

Did you know?.....that the Tourist Information Office

Community Shop

has been unfunded since the Town & District Councils withdrew their funding in March 2008 and closed the TiC in White Hart St? Yes, that’s right – NO funding – we have continued to provide this service on a voluntary basis. However, if we are to continue with our work, we must find suitable funding - any help with this will be greatly appreciated! We passionately believe Thetford has a great deal to offer and the financial benefit visitors bring to the town is crucial to the town’s economy.

Since Leaping Hare opened the King Street premises in 2010, we have offered space to local traders, community groups and artisans to display and sell their wares. This has proved successful and generated much needed funds for both parties. It is a project that we are planning to extend further and are, therefore, seeking quality artisan crafters and businesses to partner with us. If you are interested please contact us on 01842 751975 or email: david@leapinghare.org.

What else do we offer?

In addition to the above we also offer a wide range of travel services – we are the only official National Express ticket agency in town and we do not charge additional booking fees. Day trips and weekly excursions plus trips to live concerts with Coach Travel partners: Coach Services Thetford, Eastons Travel Norwich & Chenery Live.

Event Box Office We offer a box office service that has proven extremely beneficial to many of the local community groups that deliver events to fundraise, Thetford Players are just one of the groups that have used our great location to market, promote and sell their event tickets. They have enjoyed record audiences at their pantomimes year on year from 2011-2013.

Pop in soon and see what we have to offer – we look forward to seeing you!

Community Event Management We also deliver a number of events ourselves. We have worked in association with a number of Community Groups, statutory authorities and individuals to support their Charitable Fundraising. We have helped raise thousands of pounds for organisations such as: Cancer Research UK, St. Nicholas Hospice and Thetford Town Cricket Club. Leaping Hare has a wealth of experience in event management and delivery and has played a significant role in last year’s Town Council’s Diamond Jubilee Events and helped to launch and deliver last year’s Night Markets for SoRT iT and the Town Council. We are looking forward to this years and also looking forward to assisting the Thetford Festival (24.8.2013 – 8.9.2013) again this year. Our next event is ‘Breakfast at Tiffanys’ Sunday 24th March, 2.30pm (doors open 2pm) – see this film classic on a BIG screen, right here in Thetford for only £3 + FREE refreshments! Thetford Players new production “Musical Mania” will be performed at the Carnegie Room on 25th - 27th April. Please mention the About Thetford Community Magazine when responding to advertisements

Childhood Immunisations

Do you need a.... Carer • Companion • Home Help

Dr Matt Piccaver

I'm sure, when I was a kid, all we seemed to get was a sugar lump, a “TB jab”, and left to fend for our own devices, or perhaps just get ill. It seems these days there are a vast array of childhood immunisations, so I thought I'd explain a little about the immunisations that children get these days, and what might be just around the corner. Over the coming few issues, I'll go on to outline the illness we're trying to prevent, and the role of childhood immunisations in protecting us from such illness, be they spotty, snotty, or potentially fatal. From the first time Edward Jenner experimented with Cow Pox pus to protect a farmer's boy from Small Pox, immunisations have made a massive impact across the globe. In addition to sanitation and housing, the vaccination programme is one of the corner stones of public health protection in the UK.

Garden Pages March:Garden 23/02/2013 23:45 Page 1

Gardeners & Allotment Holders of Thetford Hi Gardeners! Well, we are in to the month of March, so what should we be doing this month? By now the parsnips seeds should be in and the shallots and onions too, but only weather permitting. It is still very cold at the moment, so you may have to pick your timing. You should have chitted your potatoes by now (meaning stood them in an egg tray with the eye pointing upwards and place them somewhere cool until planting.) I never plant mine out until Easter, so that I miss the frosts. You will need this time to get your manure dug in, if you have not already done so, and make sure there are no weeds in the garden or allotment. If you have planted tomatoes in trays and they are up already, prick them out into pots and if the weather is kind to us then put them in a cold greenhouse to grow on, ready for planting out when the time comes. The daffodils are starting to come up now, so they will be a pretty sight when they open up. We have had a good show of snow drops, which are just about finished as are the crocuses.

Time to clean out the pond in the bottom of the garden, if it is not frozen over, and you can start to feed the fish a little at a time. And don't forget our feathered friends out there, who are now calling with the dawn chorus in the mornings looking for a mate. Such a lovely time of year Spring, everything coming into bud and coming to life again. Well reader, that is all for this month. Take care and if you need some information please call on 07867974544 or email me on yvonnerout@gmail.com The next speaker for March is Ian Limmer from Peter Beales Roses at the United Reformed church 7.30pm March 28th. We have a seed swap too. The Spring show will be April 6th at the Church on the Way, Churchill Way. if you would like to enter please come and join us setting up is 8.30am to 10.15am..... Judging is 10.30am to 1.00pm and open to the public is 2.00pm prize giving is 3.00pm All are welcome the more the merrier. Bye for now Yvonne

Recently Lion Zone Chairman Derek Fripp and Multiple District Lioness Chairman June Mills joined the Thetford Breckland Lionesses for their meeting at Kings Court. They were very interested in the time club members spent helping those who were ill or housebound and fund raising ideas of the club. Also during February, Thetford Breckland Lionesses welcomed Christine Berwick from the Cystic Fibrosis Society to receive a cheque for £300. Christine explained that the donation would go a long way to help those with cystic fibrosis "to get on with their lives" by providing smaller portable nebulisers and assist with transport arrangements for their appointments.

Saturday 23rd March, 3.00pm at Thetford Library Sarah Ridgard & Natasha Soobramanien introduce their debut novels. “Seldom Seen” , Sarah’s novel was picked as one of the contenders for Amazon’s Rising Stars Competition 2012 and is set in a sleepy Suffolk village in the 1990’s. Fourteen year old Desiree is haunted by her gruesome discovery of the body of a baby in a ditch whilst out walking, and finds herself compelled to unearth secrets that perhaps should be left alone. A mesmerising debut, “Seldom Seen “ is particularly distinctive for its striking “evocation of landscape , of farming, its season, cruelties and epiphanies”. (The Guardian) A reworking of the French 18th century classic, Paul et Virginie, “Genie and Paul” is set in London, Mauritius and Rodrigues, and is an original love story: the story of a sister’s love for a lost brother, and the story of his love for an island that in reality lives only in his imagination. A Guardian Book of the Year 2012 and shortlisted alongside “Seldom Seen” for Amazon’s Rising Stars, the novel was published to critical acclaim. Tickets can be bought from Thetford Library, online via www.brecklandbookfestival.com or on the door.
