In these and other situations, HMRC might send you a PAYE Tax Calculation (form P800) after the end of the tax year if they think you have paid too much or too little tax. HMRC now sends out thousands of P800s every year and most are automatically computer-generated. In many cases, too much or too little tax is paid simply because of the way the PAYE system works and noone is ‘at fault’. But sometimes there will have been an error and I will concentrate on those situations later in this article. Not everyone will get a P800. Some people fill in self assessment tax returns, so their tax affairs will be sorted out in that way. For many others, PAYE works well so you pay everything you owe during the year. But HMRC might not know everything they need to know to get your tax right, so check your position even if you do not receive a P800.

Tax Clinic 2012/13 PAYE Tax Calculations In this article, Colin Chamberlain of Lovewell Blake LLP takes a look at the Tax Calculations that are now sent out each year by HM Revenue & Customs (‘HMRC’) to taxpayers who have not paid the correct amount of tax via the Pay As You Earn (‘PAYE’) system. What is a PAYE Tax Calculation? Employees and pensioners have tax taken off them throughout the tax year via PAYE. In most cases (HMRC estimates around 85% of people), this means that you pay the correct amount of tax by the end of the year. However, this is not always the case and you should always check your tax, even if you think your tax affairs are straightforward. There are several possible reasons why your tax affairs may become complicated and cause the wrong amount of tax to be deducted under PAYE. For example, you: G G

How to check the P800 There are many instances where, for a variety of reasons, the figures on the P800 are not correct and you should carefully check them. HMRC send notes with the P800 to help you check it but particular points to look out for are: G

Estimated figures – HMRC might have used estimated figures but not made it clear that they are estimated. Compare all figures to your own records (e.g. P60, P45, P11D, bank and building society statements etc.). HMRC also sometimes agree to tax small amounts of income you receive without tax taken off (e.g. rental income, some savings interest) through your PAYE code. HMRC will probably have used an estimate of the income to work out your PAYE code and may have simply used the same figure in the P800. Check the amount that HMRC have used is correct and tell them if it needs changing or if it is no longer relevant.

have more than one job or pension; are in receipt of a taxable state benefit (e.g. state pension, jobseekers allowance etc.); change jobs or retire; G

G G G

are widowed; get benefits in kind (e.g. company car, private healthcare insurance etc.) from your employer;

• need to claim extra allowances or expenses against your tax.

Combined figures – More than one source of income might be added together in a single line on the P800. If, for example, you have more than one job or pension, you might have to add up figures from multiple P60s, to arrive at the amount shown as ‘PAYE’ income.

Please mention the About Thetford Community Magazine when responding to advertisements

10

G

Missing figures – HMRC may not know about certain amounts you are entitled to claim as a deduction from your income (e.g. using your car for business travel and other employment expenses etc.). You should tell HMRC if these amounts are not included on the P800. Also pension contributions and charity donations may be relevant to the P800 calculation (usually only if you are a higher rate taxpayer or certain taxpayers who are 65 years old or more). Allowances – you may be entitled to more allowances than HMRC have included on the P800. For example: G

of the tax will be difficult for you financially, you may be able to negotiate a payment plan with HMRC. There are some limited situations in which you may be able to argue that you should not have to pay the tax bill, these are as follows: G

G

Mistake by employer – It is possible that the underpayment has arisen due to your employer or pension payer not operating PAYE correctly. For example, they may not have applied the tax code that HMRC sent to them. If this is the case, HMRC should first seek the tax from the employer or pension payer, not from you. Mistake or Failure by HMRC – The underpayment could have arisen because HMRC have failed to make timely use of information about you which they have had in their possession. In such cases, you can consider asking HMRC to write off the tax under their Extra-Statutory Concession A19 (ESC A19). But note that ESC A19 usually only applies to underpayments for tax years ending more than 12 months ago – for example you cannot normally use ESC A19 to ask for tax owing for 2012/13 to be written off if HMRC are advising you of the underpayment in, say August 2013.

you might have turned 65 or 75 in 2012/13 and be entitled to a higher age allowance for that year (although note that from 6 April 2013 these higher allowances are now only available to those born before 6 April 1948 and 6 April 1938 respectively); you might have got married and become entitled to married couple’s allowance (but this only applies if one or both of you was born before 6 April 1935).

G

G

What to do if you get a Refund If you get a refund you should check that it is correct before you deposit the cheque. This is because: G

Sources of Help Independent advice can be sought from a tax professional. Indeed you should consider seeking such help if you think you have discovered a problem which means you have not been paying enough tax and which could mean you could face a bill and penalties. Colin Chamberlain would be happy to work with you and he can be contacted at c.chamberlain@lovewell-blake.co.uk or on 01842 755032. If you are on a low income and cannot afford to pay for professional advice, there are two charities which could offer guidance on how to check the figures and explain how the calculations work. In some circumstances, they might also be able to help you to resolve queries directly with HMRC. The first charity is ‘Tax Help for Older People’ which offers free tax advice to older people (broadly, aged 60 or over) with a net household income of £17,000 or less. The second charity is ‘TaxAid’ which helps low-income tax payers who cannot afford to pay a professional.

The P800 is only an estimate, produced by HMRC’s computer. So the calculation is only as good as the data held on the computer; HMRC might have got something wrong, so you could have been repaid too much or not enough; If HMRC repay you too much and you don’t tell them, you could be charged a penalty, if they think you were careless in not spotting it.

G

G

What to do if you owe some Tax Unfortunately most people will have to pay the tax shown on their P800 calculation. If you owe under £3,000 and you have sufficient income from which tax can be deducted under PAYE in 2014/15, the underpayment will be included as a deduction from your allowances in 2014/15. If it cannot be collected through your PAYE code, HMRC will contact you about arranging to pay. If the payment

Apologies: Last month’s top tip - the Coasthopper, which offers frequent buses along the North Norfolk coast all summer long IS very affordable and completely FREE if you have a bus pass was a great tip, however, you cannot combine this service with the Go Whippet as the timings don’t work out. It is still a great service but you will need to get to Norwich via a different route i.e. National Express. Godfrey’s Wishing Well

Rex kindly offered the museum the well and students from Zone For Learning, under the direction of Dave Southwell, have restored the roof to allow the exhibit to be put on display. Dave Southwell said. “It is a good opportunity for local students to get involved in restoring a little piece of the Dad’s Army story”. Rex also donated a number of photographs, which were taken during filming and these are now on display as part of the exhibit. Mr Palmer recounts that new rose bushes and white picket fences were also installed by the BBC to get the right feel for Private Godfrey’s idyllic cottage, which in the episode was threatened with demolition for a new aerodrome. .

The Dad’s Army Museum recently welcomed Rex Palmer and students and staff from Thetford’s Zone For Learning to view the new wishing well display. The wishing well featured in the Dad’s Army episode ‘Is There Honey Still for Tea’, which was filmed in 1973. The well was specially made by the BBC props department for the episode which was filmed in Rex Palmer’s garden at nearby East Wretham. Made from wood and paper but decorated to look like stone, the well was left behind once filming was completed 40 years ago.

Sports Day Experience Former England Goalkeeping legend Peter Shilton made an appearance in Thetford last week to help promote a sports experience day for disabled children.

Mayor of Thetford, Stuart Wright with Peter Shilton

The event organised by The Presidents Sporting Club/ Essex Disabled Sports Foundation charity, sets out to offer over 1,500 disabled children from special schools from across East Anglia the opportunity to participate in 30 different sports activities. The event in Thetford was one of three organised this year the others being at Chelmsford and Watford. Shilton took time to pose for photos and sign autographs for children as they enjoyed themselves with all manner of activities such as American football, basketball, Ju-Jitsu Volleyball, Quad biking and bowls.

The charity has now raised well over £1.5 million through initiatives such as the Sports Experience Days and chairman of the foundation, Mike Jackson was pleased with the attendance and organisation of the event which involved many local groups. Schools participating came from a 50 mile radius and the activities were well received from those participating. Jackson was one of the Olympic torch bearers and many of the children took turns in having their photo taken with the torch. Thetford Mayor, Stuart Wright who attended the event said “It is wonderful that Thetford is able to host such an event and we pay tribute to Mike Jackson and all those involved in giving these children a truly memorable day”.

THETFORD TOWN COUNCIL Having taken into consideration the excellent feedback from the consultation with the residents living around Melford Common, the Town Council have undertaken to have wooden posts fitted at Melford Common. A contract has been awarded for this work to be carried out and the project will commence imminently.

Thetford St John Many of the cadets of Thetford St John are taking part in the Save A Life September campaign. They are looking for various groups to share their knowledge with and to do some peer teaching. If your group would like to be part of this and learn some valuable First Aid knowledge or if they are working towards a badge or similar please get in contact with us to arrange a date and time. They will also be involved with the Thetford Festival this year again so please pop along and see us there. The "Stay Awake" that the cadets all took part in to help send one of their fellow members to Paraguay to work with street children raised a massive £669.87. They all enjoyed the challenges set for them and the midnight barbecue definitely went down a treat! We would all like to say a huge thank you to Bishops School for allowing us to use the Art Centre overnight and to everyone who generously sponsored the young people or who donated to them via Facebook.

So far this year the Cadets have been taking part in some of the larger duties within Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire. This has allowed them to improve their First Aid skills as well as meeting new people and being part of the much wider community of St John. Again our young people of the town have shown just how committed they are and how they can put their skills to use, very often passing on their knowledge to other cadets from other regions. Save a life September Save a life September is a campaign that St John Ambulance will again be running this year, through September, to get as many people as possible to have basic First Aid knowledge. We as a Division are prepared to come out to as many groups, clubs, businesses as possible throughout September and pass on our knowledge in the hope that it may just save a life. All courses are designed to give you the basic knowledge to help you cope in an emergency. There is no age limit on this and can be for families or individuals. These courses will all be FREE so for more details please contact: Sharon Thompson on 07940 029 510 or email shaz_eng_uk@hotmail.com

Accident Claims - The Personal Touch Each year, over three million people are injured in accidents. If, for example, you injure yourself at work or in a car accident, would you consider making a claim? Many people believe that we have a “compensation culture” in the UK, but here at MCP we beg to differ. If someone else is at fault for your accident you should be entitled to financial compensation. The idea is to put you back in the financial position you were in prior to the accident and give you something additional for any pain and suffering. There is no “windfall”. The way compensation is paid out can also help to make sure that it is spread out over the course of someone’s lifetime or, in the case of fatal accidents, to those relatives who have suffered bereavement. In very complex cases, or where court proceedings need to be started, individuals may have to wait several years before their claim is settled. In such cases, an individual can receive an “interim payment” before their claim is fully settled. We help our clients with those practical issues that often follow an accident. For example, if you have had a car accident we help you get back on the road as soon as possible. If you need assistance in dealing with insurance companies to get a hire car or a pay-out on your existing car we can provide that. We also look at the treatment side of any claim. Many clients report long delays in getting the medical assistance that they need on the NHS. This tends to increase their pain and delay their return to work. These days, many employers only pay statutory sick pay, so not working can mean earning virtually nothing. We therefore offer all of our Personal Injury clients FREE physiotherapy treatment. This service is provided by the Thetford Physiotherapy & Sports Clinic. The Clinic is staffed by highly qualified, experienced therapists. While the physiotherapist is dealing with your medical problems, we will get on and progress your claim for compensation. We aim to get you fit and well (so that you can return to work) and fully compensated. This “one-stop-shop” for personal injury claims is a local service offered by local businesses. Unlike many of the ‘panel solicitors’ appointed by legal expenses insurers, we are a local firm. You can meet with us at any time and we can even travel to your house if need be. We can also guarantee that a fully qualified lawyer will handle your claim from start to finish. What’s more, you don’t need to worry about incurring our legal fees as our charges should be covered by the insurance company of the party at fault. If you or a family member have been injured then please contact Ben Dures today by using our free phone number 0800 612 2714 for more information on how we can help you and your family.

Enjoy The Sun But Take Care We all have been enjoying some nice sunny days in the last month and at the salon we have increasingly been having clients suffering from sunburn and sun damage. Not only can it look unsightly it can be very sore and uncomfortable. Many have admitted to either not bothering to apply sun cream or just saying they did not realise the sun seemed that strong!

I think people have a tendency to be more thorough applying sun cream when on holiday abroad, but need to make it part of their everyday life at home as well, to prevent such terrible burns and sun damage. A minimum of sun protection factor 15 (SPF for short) is recommended. If it is particularly sunny and you are out for long periods of time or doing sports where you get hot and perspire then the sun screen would need reapplying more frequently. Higher factors are good in respect that they give longer protection but be warned, the higher the factor the more chemicals it contains, which can react with some sensitive skins. Generally speaking, sensitive skins should only go up to SPF 30 and be labelled for sensitive skins as they usually contain titanium dioxide which is kinder. It is very difficult to treat sun burn, the best thing is applying aloe vera gel to soothe and keep the skin calm, we do not recommend any waxing or exfoliating treatments. Some clients turn up thinking an exfoliation treatment will get rid of their peeling skin but that can only be done if there is no inflammation or redness An excellent treatment would be a body hydrating pack which is rather like having an Aloe Vera based mask mixed with calming and soothing essential oils applied all over the body to rehydrate the damaged skin, this is left on approx 20 mins and then removed with warm steam towels. So lets be positive and hope we have a warm, sunny August, and remember to apply your sunscreen before you leave home. Lisa Stalling Halcyon Days Skincare Ltd Telephone: 01284 704991

Whoop Whoop... Whooping Cough Dr Matt Piccaver Some of you may recall the outbreak of whooping cough during the Winter of 2012-13, particularly in those that were not immunised. Often called the “100 day cough”, whooping cough is a highly contagious condition, caused by Bordetella pertussis. It starts with a cough, which over a period of a couple of weeks goes on to develop the familiar “whoop” noise. Prior to the introduction of pertussis immunisation, whooping cough infected 120,000 people per year in the UK alone, but in general it is thankfully much rarer in children. That said, the most recent outbreak resulted in the infection of nearly 10,000 people. As a result of this, pregnant women were offered the injection with the hope to pass immunity onto the unborn child. Whooping cough caught through droplets, i.e. coughs and sneezes, and can last for up to three months. An initial course of antibiotics can reduce the transmission rate, but does little to change the nature of the illness.

Whooping cough has several stages. Initially the “cararrhal stage” with cough, that comes in bursts, and becomes the typical whoop after two weeks. Sometimes patients will vomit when coughing. In severe cases, children can develop pneumonia, lose weight due to vomiting, and rarely die. So you can understand why vaccination is important. At present, the jab is given as a combination vaccine during the usual childhood immunisation schedule. In the past, it was thought the vaccine could cause a severe neurological illness. Thankfully, this has been found to be false. Most people, if they are to react, get a short lived feverish illness or area of redness at the injection site. The vaccination programme has been shown to make a significant impact on the burden of childhood illness, and the whooping cough vaccine is just one part of this. For further information, ask your surgery, call NHS 111, or check http://www.nhs.uk/conditions/Whoopingcough/Pages/Introduction.aspx

Breckland Cats Protection Tel: 01842 810018 There was a good response to our appeal for help last month and as a result we have 2 new indoor fosterers but we do still have a pen that needs to go in a garden if anyone is interested in fostering in this way please contact us. We have had several reports of cats being left behind when their owners move. It is so upsetting because they keep going to the door of their home and crying and there is no one to let them in and feed them. Sadly there are not enough homes for the amount of unwanted cats and kittens yet people still keep breeding their cats. These are the unwanted strays of the future. Thanks to Pets at Home who have held several charity weekends and managed to raise an amazing £860 for our group. Remember we are your local cat charity based in Thetford and Brandon, covering a wide area as far as Mildenhall and made up entirely of volunteers. All money donated goes towards the care of the cats and none is used for admin or wages as we are not paid.

Thetford Open Gardens

Another very successful Open Gardens, thanks to the gardeners, the sponsors, the donators of raffle prizes, the advertisers and all who in any way helped to make the day something special. The weather could have been better, but, thankfully, it didn’t seem to deter the large number of visitors. We managed to raise £5,300 for St Nicholas Hospice Care which is the best ever result for Thetford. For the first time, an American family joined us in opening their garden which was wonderful. It would be lovely if in future, folk from other nations could join us. The Klicks sang in Abbeygate, and a beekeeper was on hand in Arlington Way. A beautiful display of flowers was to be found in Croxton Church, thanks to members of the Garden and Allotment Club following their summer show.

I am stepping down as organiser, and Rachel Woods will take the gardens forward, so I do wish her well for future years and hope she will enjoy the support that you have all given me. Liz Hodgson Please mention the About Thetford Community Magazine when responding to advertisements

Kilverstone Open Garden Heartfelt thanks go to Lord and Lady Fisher for opening their walled garden and Kilverstone Church to the public and for helping us to raise £731.04 for St Nicholas Hospice Care. Apart from the Garden and Church, a lovely walk around the lake had been mapped out for those who wanted to stretch their legs, and there were cream teas and cakes for all. It was a beautiful day weatherwise, and everyone enjoyed themselves.

The Thetford Players Historical Character Walks As part of the Thetford Festival 2013, the Thetford Players are pleased to announce their contribution ‘the Thetford Historical Character Walks’. This year the Thetford Town Crier will welcome everybody at the start of each Walk, introducing the guide, Thomas Paine - English-American political activist, author, political theorist, revolutionary and one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. Paine will be joined by many other characters along the way, including Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Radcliffe (former owner of the Bell Inn), Father John Brame of St. Mary’s Priory, and perhaps the most famous of all – Boudica, leader of the British Iceni tribe. The script, written by Stuart Wright, member of the Thetford Players and Mayor of Thetford, has been specially rewritten for the Thetford Festival and features additional characters to those from last year, who played a part in the town’s remarkable history, such as Charles Burrell and Henry Cabell (one of the founding families of Australia). The wheelchair-friendly circular walk, suitable for all ages, lasts just under 90 minutes and takes in the most historic parts of Thetford, starting in what is now known as Whitehart Street (formerly Bridgegate Street) where Paine was born in 1737, ending at King’s House in King Street, fittingly by the golden statue of Paine. Sun 25th August at 10.30am and again at 2pm Ticket prices: £6 per ticket (or a Family Ticket is £20 which is valid for up to four people, one of who must be under 16 years of age). Tickets are now available for either Walk and may be purchased securely online at www.thetfordplayers. co.uk/new_productions.html, by telephone or in-person at The Leaping Hare Tourist Office, Belmont House, 20 King Street, Thetford, IP24 2AP (open Tues to Sat, 10am until 3pm). MUSEUM OF THETFORD LIFE

Ancient House Museum

Schools Out – Visit your local museum for free! Thetford Festival and other summer holiday events August is set to be a very busy month at Ancient House Museum of Thetford Life. Throughout the summer holidays there is a packed programme of events and activities designed for visitors to enjoy. Whether it’s meeting a Tudor in the beautiful atmospheric Hall or creating a unique piece of artwork to take home, there really is something for everyone to enjoy at your local museum. The team at Ancient House play a big part in Water fun in the garden putting together Thetford Festival along with fellow members of Thetford Tourism and Heritage Partnership.

This year the festival is jam packed with exciting events, many at the museum. Speaking about the Festival, Karen-Emma White said “We are delighted to be part of such a vibrant programme; it’s a great opportunity for us to get out into the community and to showcase some of the fantastic collection we have in the Ancient House.” The hottest tickets in town are set to be those for the East Anglian Storytellers Event on Thursday 29th August. For one night only, hear four storytellers from four counties, Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and Essex. The early evening session is suitable for families with under 12s; discover just how horrid life could be with Terrible Tudor Tales! Talking about the evening performance, storyteller Marion Leeper said “What happens when four storyteller’s meet in a tavern? Hold onto your hats and be prepared to be blown away!” Tavern Yarn Tales is suitable for adults and over 12s. Places are free but limited, so advanced booking is essential.

Meet The Tudors is the Festival finale event put together by TTHP and the museum team. Join us in Kings House Gardens for a day of music, dance and food – all favourites of the Tudor Court! Guided tours of the new exhibition at Ancient House and the Priory ruins will run throughout the day. Meet costumed re-enactors, have a go at handling real Tudor artefacts and enjoy an exciting array of family activities to celebrate Thetfords Tudor heritage. Looking for something extra for children to do in the holidays? This summer, for the first time, the museum is able to offer children the opportunity to gain a Discover Arts Award independently. Instruction packs are available at the museum for £2, which includes admission to the holiday events supporting this award. Council Grant Secures Scoreboard for Swimmers Thetford Dolphins Swimming Club are delighted to have a fantastic new Scoreboard for use during competitions, courtesy of a grant from Breckland Council. The scoreboard is a much needed replacement for its' outdated predecessor and is bigger, bolder and more reliable! The scoreboard was installed at the clubs home, Waterworld, Thetford, in April this year, with the remainder of the cost coming from Parkwood Leisure and Dolphins Club funds. Since its' installation, the new Scoreboard has already been in use for the final round of the Norfolk Junior League, where the Dolphins achieved second place and two club mini meets. (Megan Free pictured competing). Throughout the year, the club is host to many important competitive events, including heats from the Norfolk Junior League, Suffolk Summer League, National Arena and the Annual Norfolk County Championships. It also hosts two open meets each year and holds a number of club only events, including the Links Galas with Thetfords' twin towns in Germany and the Netherlands. As such, the new Scoreboard will significantly enhance the experience of a huge number of competitors and spectators, recording the outstanding levels being achieved by our swimmers.

unfortunately also means the club is not currently open to under-18s. Interested, but not sure if it’s the sport for you? Blue Thunder Rollers are also looking for people to become referees, who are trained to skate alongside the players but don’t make physical contact, and ‘Non skating officials’ who run other aspects of the game, including scoring and timing. Training takes place from 7pm to 10pm on Monday nights, and the cost is £5 per session. If you like it you’ll need to buy your own mouth guard, and ultimately your own skates and safety kit, but to get started all you need is some comfortable exercise clothes, a bottle of water and yourself! To get in touch, email info@bluethunderrollers.com, phone 07999 403329 or search for Blue Thunder Rollers on Facebook.

Roller Derby The sporting phenomenon that is roller derby has finally landed within reach of Thetford! A thrilling team sport played on roller skates, roller derby is an addictively fun way of keeping in shape, and new clubs are springing up all over the country. The game, played in sports halls and roller rinks, involves two teams of skaters on an oval track, each trying to help one member of their team get past all players on the opposing team, using a combination of speed, strength, agility and tactics. As well as fitness, roller derby offers a doorway to a colourful alternative culture, with flamboyant outfits, face paint and mock-violent skater pseudonyms contributing to the unique look and feel of this fast-growing sport. Interested? Your local roller derby club is looking for new recruits! The Blue Thunder Rollers train at the Curvemotion roller rink on the north side of Bury St Edmunds, just a 20-minute drive from Thetford. All are welcome - it doesn’t matter if you have never put on a pair of roller skates in your life, as the club’s full training programme can take you all the way from taking your first baby steps to a competing skater. The club is mixedsex, and aims to foster close links between all the different communities around Bury, Thetford and Mildenhall. While building fitness is an important part of the training, roller derby teams benefit from players of a mix of shapes and sizes, so you don’t have to be traditionally athletic. The club provides roller skates and full safety equipment, including pads and a helmet – since roller derby is a full contact sport, safety is taken very seriously, which

Thetford Friends of St. Nicholas Hospice Care On Tuesday the 16th July Dorothy Hagarty braved the heatwave dressed as a clown and along with colleagues embraced a collection in King Street which raised £90.14 for St Nicholas Hospice.

Children’s Goodbyes to a much loved Teaching Assistant At the end of July children and staff at Raleigh Infant School and Nursery in Thetford said a heartfelt farewell to a much loved teaching assistant. Mrs Legg has worked with hundreds of children and many adults during her 27 year career at the school. Mrs Legg has worked hard to support children’s learning in all areas of the curriculum. Many children including Matthew from a reception class said “I will miss Mrs Legg helping me sound out new words.” Ashley and her friends said “We will miss Mrs Legg helping us singing and finding information in forest school lessons.” The school is very sad to see Mrs Legg leave but send their best wishes for her retirement and hope that she will pop back into school and see them soon.

The friends would like to thank everyone who gave. For more information about the friends of St Nicholas Hospice please contact Don or Pam Goveia on 01842 630402 or at the Thetford Art Gallery.

Summer News TMP rounded off its first year under new director Ann Smith with a resounding musical volley. Ensembles were particularly busy, the TMP Band first on the podium with a well-received performance at the Royal Norfolk Show. The Rock Band entertained guests at a Norfolk Music Service social event which also featured the debut of the newly formed TMP Jazz Band in which tutors, adult and student members play alongside each other. Meanwhile for most members the final event of the year was the Summer Concert held in the Carnegie Rooms on Thursday 11th July in front of a large and supportive audience celebrating both the potential and achievement of the young musicians. An inventive and confident performance from KS1 Mini-Maestros set the tone for a first half programme

which reflected a renaissance in violin playing beside the continued popularity of keyboard and guitar and songs in many styles, among them Natasha Godfrey’s strong version of Taylor Swift’s ‘Trouble’.

TMP’s Singing Groups performed musically for their conductor Polina Sosnina, who is leaving the Project for university, at the start of a second half, with the emphasis then moving onto individual performers, among them Jacob Bradley (guitar) and brass players

Elliott Sanders and Katie Tippett. Great work from the kit drummers and contributions from djembes and single reeds left only the Band’s rendition of the Flintstones’ theme between the audience and the conclusion that Project6:Layout 1 20/07/2013 09:27 Page 1 music is alive and well in IP24.

The Thetford Academy Leavers Prom 2013 This years leavers Prom took place at Lynford Hall and was an amazing night once again. Despite the rain falling during ‘the arrivals’, all over 150 students turned up in fantastic style on motorbikes, campervans, horse and carriage, Ferraris and many other vintage and classic automobiles. The Prom committee had chosen a ‘Bond’ theme this year so the students had fake money to play at casino tables with croupiers which the students (and over 60 staff) particularly enjoyed. There was a Prom King and Queen from each site with many other medals awarded throughout the evening such as best dancer, best dressed and most likely to be Prime Minister...so watch this space! The students looked amazing and the effort they had gone to for the evening was immense, so we thank the parents out there who helped fund it all too! It was a lovely way to say goodbye to our current year 11, we wish them all the best for their future.

Thetford Probus Club The July meeting of the club was held on July 2nd at Hanbury Court. The speaker was the Rev Canon Baker (St Cuthbert’s Church Thetford) He was welcomed by the Chairman Trevor Burlingham, the subject of the talk was the recent Pilgrimage to the Holy Land by members of the Church, Bob described the many Churches, Cemeteries, and other places they had visited including the Wailing Wall, he brought to life the present, and past history of the area for members who had never been, or perhaps will never have the opportunity to visit, he also spoke of the tensions that still exist between Israel and Palestine and said it was so sad as most people just wanted to get on with their life. A vote of thanks was proposed by Jim Stanley and was heartily supported by all the members, he also reminded members that Bob Baker was highly respected by all the community of Thetford and an outstanding speaker, and we were very lucky to have him speak to us.

The summer luncheon was held in the lovely garden of June and Mike Lewis, with good weather and excellent company some 46 members and their wives had a thoroughly good time. At the conclusion the Chairman thanked June and Mike for a splendid and highly enjoyable event, the main course was brought in by caterers and the wives of members provided the desserts. The speaker for the August meeting will be Dr John Davies on archaeology in Norfolk. If you would like to know more about Probus and wishing to join please contact our Secretary David Wood on 01842 761833. Colin Armes - Press Secrectary
