Wanaka RDA has seven riders who range in age from 8 years to mid 60’s. Our group meets at Timber Creek Equestrian Centre to ride on Wednesdays during the school terms. The exception is in winter when it is too cold. Every month a rider is chosen as rider of the month and is awarded a ribbon or a rosette to encourage them.

At present 4 of our riders are preparing to compete in the Special Olympics Regional Summer Games to be held in Dunedin on 1st and 2nd December. The riders, Simon Scaife, Morgan James, Chloe Wigg and Anna Freeman have been practising each RDA session. They are enjoying the challenge and are looking forward to this exciting event.

Wanaka RDA has been fund raising to assist the

riders to attend the event and would like to thank Ritual Café, Wanaka Four Square, Cheeky Monkey and Mitre 10 who helped by having our donation boxes in their shops. If anyone else would like to assist, donations can be made to Wanaka RDA, 196 Maxwell Rd, RD2, Wanaka.

The photo was taken in May at our annual Ribbon Day where riders from other Central Otago groups are invited to compete with Wanaka RDA riders in Dressage and obstacle events.

Wanaka RDA is an affiliated group of NZRDA. New volunteers and riders are always welcome.

Hi all, a pretty steady week all round. Our local SAR volunteers have stolen the show with two rescues in three days, one of which showed how essential it is to carry personal locator equipment in the mountains - a life saver on this occasion.

It can't be the hot weather causing tempers to fray yet, but we have had a few anti-social incidents this week where some charmers have chosen to put their own entertainment ahead of their neighbours' peace of mind or in some cases have just decided to be rude and belligerent to those around them.....a question for those involved, would you do those things or say those things in front of your mum? Oh, and as a couple of individuals found out, if you want to push the issue when the cops turn up we are more than happy to give you a tour of the cells.

Many of you will bear testament to the number of random breath tests we do. Unfortunately the message isn't reaching everyone with another two drunk drivers prosecuted this week.

Some good for nothing thief has helped themselves to 500 litres of petrol from one of our hard working farmer’s properties in Cardrona. Someone out there knows who did this and we want to talk to you.

On the lighter side a couple of tips: 1. If you park your car on a hill and don't apply the handbrake, yes, it will roll away and crash into things. 2. If you sunbath nude by the lake, people will complain. Yes, spare a thought for Mel who attended both those crackers on Tuesday.

The troublesome spiders rather unwisely decided to light a sparkler from inside the letterbox in which they were living. Needless to say their home was subsequently destroyed by fire, although the spiders did escape.

Terry and Ruby would do well to stay away from fire of any kind in the future; as cold blooded creatures spiders do not enjoy extreme heat. As the warmer summer months approach they will be looking for cool, dark places to live (especially since they’ve destroyed their letterbox home).

Lions Club of Wanaka and Districts

- A special invitationThis special invitation comes to you from the Lions Club of Wanaka and Districts. We ask that you take a few minutes to read it and to reflect on what a service club such as Lions means to our community and to the well being of all people in society in general.

The Lions members ran the bar at Sir Ian McKellan concerts to assist Christchurch.

Monthly meetings combine dinner and business at 6.30pm 3rd Wed at the Albert Town Tavern.

We cut, process and donate firewood to the elderly and underprivileged.

Our aim is to enrich the community in which we live and Lions Clubs are recognised around the world for their humanitarian service. When the first earthquake hit Christchurch, the local Lions Clubs were the first service organisation on the ground distributing water. Loinism in essence is about good old community spirit, caring for your fellow man but in the process, having fun.

The Wanaka and Districts Lions Club has a proud record of extraordinary service to the community over the past 38 years and as we move forward in 2012 we invite you to be part of its exciting new future.

This year the Black Tie Dinner raised over $30,000 for community projects.

Our community based projects and local assistance help people from all walks of life in all manner of ways. Activities include: Black Tie Fundraiser, Firewood Donation, Catering 10 hour bike race, Cavalcade, A&P Show, Anzac Day and Probus Dinner, Barwork for Sir Ian McKellan, Neurological Appeal, Planting 1100 Tress on the Lake Front, Restored Haast Pass Powder magazine restoration, Donations to Junior Rugby Club, Hawea Community Gala Day, Spectacles to Pacific Islands, Funds for Dialysis machine, Blind Appeal, Bullock Bar Raffles and representing our Lions Club around the country.

We provide annual awards to the achievers at MAC.

We have so far planted 1100 native trees and shrubs along the waterfront.

Our Members volunteered to restore the historical powder magazine in the Haast Pass.

We donated Hi Vis vests to the kids for the cycling school bus.

We run a weekly meat raffle at the Bullock Bar every Friday night.

We have regular social events and trips.
