CEILIDH (pronounced kay-lee)

An informal social gathering, with songs, story-telling, music and dancing The annual Aberdeen Highland Games take place on the first weekend in July each year and are run in conjunction with the Scottish Australia Heritage Council’s Heritage Week. The games are a gathering of pipe bands, Clans, dancers, heavy event participants, as well as state and interstate tug-of-war teams to help celebrate the Scottish / Celtic history of the Upper Hunter. Following the excitement of the Highland Games a traditional Scottish Ceilidh is held in the evening. The Ceilidh is always a great night out where everyone is welcome.

! p u t l i K Located on the New England Highway between Scone and Muswellbrook, Aberdeen is the first main township on the Hunter River. With more than 175 years history, the small town is steeped in Scottish heritage. One of the first settlements in the picturesque Upper Hunter Valley, the town was named after the Earl of Aberdeen, a friend of early settler and British MP Thomas Macqueen.

QUICK PICKS

HISTORY

Don’t miss the Two Rivers Sandstone Sculptures. These Custodians of the Landscape sandstone sculptures were carved onsite at Two Rivers in the winter of 2015 by international artist Ben Dearnley. More than 20 tonnes of stone sourced from the vineyard were used by Ben to create this unique and compelling project. His work directly references the ancient art form of stone masonry whilst reflecting the landscape of Denman.

The first European settler in the area was Lieutenant William Ogilvie in 1825. This first settlement was known as Merton and was located on the opposite side of the Hunter River to the Denman of today. Gazetted in 1853, the town was named after Lord Denman, who later became Governor General of Australia. By the 1900s Ogilvie Street was bustling with small business houses servicing the town and outlying areas and the charm of yesteryear remains today.

Denman has some fantastic events including the Upper Hunter Wine and Food Affair in May and local favourite, Denman Pig Races in October.

Settled in 1839, Merriwa flourishes as an agricultural centre. The Merriwa Festival of the Fleeces celebrates this rich agricultural history and is held on the June long weekend each year. Merriwa has many fine examples of colonial architecture, from homesteads, courthouses and police stations, to hotels and churches. Many of these can be discovered on the Merriwa Town Walk. Copies of the walk can be obtained from Merriwa Visitor Information Centre. Be sure to visit the Old Colonial Cottage, originally built in 1847 and home to the Merriwa Historical Society and Museum. Merriwa not only offers the historical museum but also a fascinating Bottle Museum. The Bottle Museum contains in excess of 5,000 bottles, ranging from hand made bottles with specially moulded neck pieces and the round bottom torpedo bottles of the early 1800s, to the famous marble stoppered cordial bottles of the 1870s. The collection was donated to the district by local residents and contains many rare and interesting bottles. The Battery Rock is a collection of spectacular basalt rock formations estimated to be around 35 million years old. These rock formations are a natural phenomenon, known as columnar jointing. They are basalt rocks formed from volcanic lava. This formation is fascinating and is a great place to stop and have a break. Visitors will find a picnic area with toilet facilities.

QUICK PICKS KING OF THE RANGES STOCKMAN’S CHALLENGE MURRURUNDI MUSEUM GALLERY HOPPING DAY TRIP TO WINGEN, BURNING MOUNTAIN OR WALLABADAH ROCK CLIMB THE EYE OF THE NEEDLE IN PARADISE PARK

WINGEN AND BURNING MOUNTAIN Take a trip out to Wingen, a little village half way between Murrurundi and Scone on the New England Highway. On the way experience the phenomenon of the Burning Mountain, where a two metre thick coal seam is burning around 20-30 metres below the surface. A great spot for picnics, Burning Mountain is a nature reserve and visitors can enjoy a 45 minute walk through the bush to its summit where there is a good view of one of the outlets. Along the way, there is a view across the valley to the Wingen Maid as she reclines in her rocky form, mourning forevermore the loss of her husband. From Wingen you can also make the short trip to Towarri National Park.

! p u h s Bru Murrurundi lies one hour south of Tamworth and just north of Scone and boasts natural beauty, rich farming land and plenty of character. Murrurundi is an art lovers’ paradise. Resident artists, galleries and frequent workshops add to the allure of Murrurundi, a haven for artists escaping the frenzy of city life. Be sure to allow time to wander the galleries including Haydon Hall, BoHo Gallery, Chicken in the Window and Michael Reid Gallery.

The name Murrurundi was derived from the Wanaruah place name

“ MURRUMOORANDI ”

Explore the unique rock formation of the Eye of the Needle, an unusual walkway leading to a lookout with captivating views over the township of Murrurundi. View the old suspension bridge, built before WWI and once used to transport the Chief Magistrate by buggy to the court house in the times of flood. Follow the town walk to view many of the Heritage listed buildings such as Dooley’s Store and the White Hart Hotel. Copies of the Heritage Walk map can be picked up from the Visitor Information Centre.

Originally thought to mean ‘nestled in the valley’, it seems more likely that it refers to five unusual rock formations near Temple Court (only four remain now) and may mean ‘five fingers’ or ‘meeting place at the five fingers’.

BARRINGTON TOPS

The majestic snow covered ranges of the Barrington Tops are a must see destination in winter.

Snowman at Pol blue camping ar ea

With a highest peak of 1586m above sea level snow is possible at any time of the year but is more likely to occur in the colder months between May and September. Snowfall at Barrington Tops is usually of a short duration so it can be a challenge to pick the right conditions to head up for a snow trip. To increase your chances of finding settled snow on the ground check the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) weather forecast before you go or visit the Barrington Tops Snow Chasers page on Facebook for the latest updates. The best spots to experience the snow are at the higher elevations on the plateau, accessible by vehicle on the Barrington Tops Forest Road from Gloucester or Scone. These include the Polblue Camping Area (1450m), Thunderbolts Lookout (1450m), Devils Hole Lookout (1400m), The Firs Picnic area (1350m) and the Honeysuckle Picnic area (1310m). The main access road is steep and unsealed and can become very slippery in ice or snow. 4WD vehicles with good tyres and high ground clearance are better suited to the hazardous conditions, however the road may be closed to all vehicles at short notice to ensure the safety of visitors. Weather conditions at Barrington Tops can change very quickly so always be prepared and take spare warm dry clothing, blankets, food and water as a minimum.

Biking enthusiasts can enjoy the various trails around the area: • Cycle up to Belltrees via Gundy (not for the faint hearted!) • The Wybong and Giants Creek trails leading from Sandy Hollow to Widden Valley are great family bike rides. • Scone Visitor Information Centre has bikes for hire. See page 39 for details.

for the KING OF THE RANGES STOCKMAN’S CHALLENGE & BUSH FESTIVAL Nestled at the foothills of the Liverpool Range and bounded by the Pages River, The Rosedale Horse Complex offers the perfect location for the annual King of the Ranges Stockman’s Challenge & Bush Festival. The three day event highlights the horsemanship and stock handling skills of early Australian stockmen. Preliminary rounds see competitors pitted against each other in the disciplines of horse shoeing, whip cracking, riding bareback through an obstacle course, packing a packhorse as well as stock work and cross country jumping. Finalists are then required to ride a bucking horse for 8 seconds and catch a wild horse within the specified time limit of 3 minutes, with the winner being named “King of the Ranges.” Complementing the Stockman’s Challenge is the Bush Festival with a variety of stalls, displays and activities including Cobb & Co Coach rides, cattle dog trials, dog high jump and billy boiling competition. A highlight this year will be the re-enactment of the life of Archie “Bung” McInnes, a local stockman of the early 1900’s who was known as the “King of the Ranges” because of his outstanding horsemanship and stock handling skills and who was the inspiration for the establishment of this event. With booked caravan and camping facilities at the ground you are immersed in the ambiance of the event. If you prefer to be a little further back from the action, you can choose from a number of accommodation options listed on the website: www.kingoftheranges.com.au

THE FESTIVAL OF THE FLEECES FRIDAY 9 – SUNDAY 11 JUNE 2017 MERRIWA NSW

Local poet Rick Wright penned an appropriate verse about the event:

‘You’ve heard about the tradition in Spain of running bulls, well this is somewhat similar, Merinos growing wool. Perhaps you’ve heard of comebacks and even cross- bred too, But Merino sheep at Merriwa grow fine wool just for you.’

‘Cast off’ was the theme for last year’s Festival of the Fleeces in Merriwa and all aspects of the wool industry, from flocks of sheep, to the shearing of the fleeces and the knitting of the yarn was covered.

‘The Festival is the largest event for the Merriwa district bringing over 5,000 people to the town each year, including tourists from all over the state who come to experience country hospitality and authentic rural heritage,’ said local councillor Ron Campbell. The Festival was blessed last year with fine weather, after the East Coast Low had dumped much needed rain on local crops, dams and paddocks. A large crowd lined the barricades in the main street to watch the Parade, which featured vintage cars, pipe bands, local school children, old farm machinery and of course the highlight... the hundreds of sheep. ‘The Running of the Sheep’, was not as wild as it sounds. They were guided expertly down the road and kept in fine order, with the crowd eagerly awaiting a glimpse of their legs, kitted out in bright red woollen socks. In a side street the sheep theme continued with vintage cars on display, some adorned with outcrops of wool and images of sheep of doubtful breeds. Up on the stage, expert shearers dealt with a pen of sheep, removing the fleeces without a scratch and then tossing the fleece on the classing table.

A great family

Working dogs competed in the high jump, having to hurdle a barrier to arrive on the back of the ‘work ute,’ while at the showground, the popular event of Team Penning continued over the two days, followed by the Bush Poets’ breakfast. Horses are a predominant feature of the Scone and the Upper Hunter region of NSW. The beautiful animals provide pleasure to many sportspeople, provide wealth to the economy and are a way of life that leads at the top in the region. HORSE STUDS OF THE UPPER HUNTER The origins of the Hunter Valley’s thoroughbred breeding industry date back to the early 1800s when the first settler and horse breeder George Bowman chose to live and breed horses in the Hunter Valley. Nestled in the valley surrounded by the Wollemi National Park and the Barrington Tops, protected by the valley hills, with lush pastures on the valley floors and close to abundant clean water, the first settlers to this region recognised that it was an unparalleled place to live, work and raise exceptional thoroughbred champions. For nearly 200 years the Hunter Valley has been home to world-class thoroughbred studs, broodmare farms, veterinarians, saddlers, farriers, equine transport companies, feed merchants, many other equine support industries and thousands of dedicated people with a love of, and passion for, horse husbandry. From Jerrys Plains, the southern gateway to Upper Hunter Country, through Denman to the Widden and Bylong Valleys, east to Muswellbrook and Aberdeen, north to the Segenhoe Valley, Scone and Murrurundi - each stud presents a unique and unparalleled experience. Every farm is a working business. Some are family-owned and operated for many generations. Others private businesses or part of world-leading and world-renowned operations. All have a unique story to tell, from their history and heritage to their architecture.

But don’t take our word for it. Come on up! And see it for yourself. It will be an experience you will never forget. All visitors are invited to experience the hidden beauty and magic of our stud farms, their history and heritage and the champion horses they produce. Visitors are welcome at our studs but you must book ahead. If you would like to visit the studs book a tour with www.htba.com.au/stud-tours or take a drive past the gateways of some of these amazing studs with the Virtual Stud Tour Audio App.

RESTAURANTS, CAFÉS, PUBS & CLUBS A DINING EXPERIENCE. With such an abundance of fantastic local gourmet produce, it’s little wonder there are many excellent restaurants and cafés both in the townships and in the surrounding countryside.

QUICK PICKS SAMPLE THE BEST LOCAL PRODUCE BROUGHT FRESH TO YOUR TABLE LONG LUNCHES THAT MERGE INTO DINNER WINE MENUS THAT SHOWCASE THE BEST OF THE UPPER HUNTER

The choice of establishments is as wide and varied as the cuisines on offer. From fine dining by award winning chefs at The Remington Restaurant or The Cottage; to charming family run cafés; in house dining at some B&B’s and country houses/retreats; to bistro dining at licenced clubs; these will add to the pleasure of staying in and touring Upper Hunter Country. The classic country pub has been the centre of social, cultural and sporting life in small towns for generations. In earlier times, it was also the place to dine with fine furniture, starched aprons, spotless linen table cloths and silver service. Commercial travellers always looked for the best hotel with the most comfortable bed, the coldest beer and especially, the best dining room.

Times have changed but you can always guarantee a cold beer and nowadays, there is a resurgence in fine dining at our country pubs. Come along and rediscover the charm and hospitality of country pubs in the Upper Hunter – sitting in the shade of a big tree on a summer’s afternoon or beside the open fire on a winter’s evening – always with a local character to entertain you and great stories that get better as the night goes on… You are always made welcome to enjoy the diverse facilities provided by the clubs in each of Upper Hunter Country’s towns.

1800s A building with a significant history in the township of Scone, The Thoroughbred has had many tales to tell. Originally known as the Crown and Anchor opening in the 1800s, it was then named The Empire in 1915 when the current building was established, before finally becoming The Thoroughbred Hotel as most locals know it today. Re-opening its doors in early 2017, The Thoroughbred will lose its ‘hotel identity’, but gain a much needed face lift with facilities to match. Featuring a high quality bakery, upmarket restaurant, bar, gaming, and 12 fully renovated rooms upstairs for accommodation, it is set to be a highlight for locals and visitors alike.

1915

In addition to the renovations, new owner Peter Allen and local design and marketing consultant Kriston Harris, have taken a unique path with the interior design and marketing of the business. Taking into consideration that Scone is the Horse Capital of Australia and in an effort to support one of our biggest local industries, Peter’s plan is to capitalise on the opportunity and stick with the theme of the building by showcasing the local thoroughbred racing and breeding history, past and present throughout the venue.

“We have so many amazing local icons, stories and achievements born and bred out of this area, it only seemed right to showcase these legacies in such a fitting scenario” says Allen, “we want to make it a venue that the community feels a part of and is proud of for years to come”.

2017

Mr Allen, who also owns a hotel in a popular part of Melbourne, has left no stone unturned in the revamp of the building, testifying that quality is the key. As part of the grand plan, a lot of structural work has gone into the building to ensure its continued longevity and all efforts will be made on the hospitality side of things in order to hit the ground running when it re-opens its doors to the public. “I’m hoping our versatility will be a key part of our success. We are aiming to provide quality food, a comfortable place to stay and a great place to relax and have a drink.” says Allen.

THE ORCHARD LODGE

The Orchard Lodge is located on Tilse’s Roma Orchard, nestled between the Hunter River and Omadale Brook on the doorstep of the Barrington Tops. The orchard was originally purchased in 1915 and grew tobacco and orange trees with only a few apple trees until 1939. In the 1940s, the apple trees proved more successful and the apple orchard was born. Apple varieties including Jonathons, Red Delicious and Granny Smith provided a valuable base with apples sold locally, at market and exported. In 1998 the orchard further diversified with red wine grapes. Cabernet and Shiraz were planted to establish Omadale Brook Estate. Today apples are sold locally and at farmers markets whilst the Cabernet and Shiraz are featured at local wine and food affairs and can be tasted and purchased when staying at the Orchard Lodge. The lodge has provided ideal group and family accommodation in a tranquil and idyllic setting since it was established in 1992.
