The Games of 2019 are nearly upon us and what an event they promise to be. On this occasion we will be celebrating 20 years of the Aberdeen Highland Games. When organising the inaugural Games in 2000 I don’t believe any of us contemplated the 20 year celebration but here we are!

Come on up!

Bookings through Scone Visitor Information Centre 02 6540 1300 or by visiting www.aberdeenhighlandgames.com and following the links to Trybooking.com

It is a pleasure to announce that our Honoured Guest for 2019 is Nicola O’Driscoll. We are so pleased she has accepted the role as it will give us our first female Chieftain. It is also most fitting as she is the daughter of the late David Macintyre, our Chieftain in year one and who was a great supporter of the Games as well as all other activities involving Scottish heritage.

#aberdeenhighlandgames

As part of our 20 year celebration, the Committee has decided to put back into the local region two assets of a permanent nature. Firstly, a Commemorative Cairn recognising the contributions of the Scots to the area and secondly the striking of a new district tartan in the name of the Upper Hunter. We have received go ahead from Council for the Cairn, to be constructed in Taylor Park, Aberdeen. This will be completed prior to the Games with Council contributing towards the total cost. The Upper Hunter tartan #12320 was registered in December last and there are now items available in the tartan. Please visit our merchandise tent at the Games and take a look at the items of merchandise we now have available. You may look forward to an array of stall holders who bring their wares for sale; to the pipe bands who fill the air with music and return year after year for what they see as a “great day out”; the Kilted Warriors whose feats of strength draw huge numbers. For this celebratory year the Warriors have a special event where they will attempt to break the Australian record in lifting a stone. Plus all the other events in which the whole family can partake. The ceilidh in the evening has always been a great hit with the tickets selling at a premium. On behalf of the committee I bid you all a welcome to Aberdeen and to the 20th annual Aberdeen Highland Games. We hope and trust that your sojourn with us in July is a great one that will have many happy memories in the years to come.

Chief of the Day Nicola O’Driscoll

Proud to support the Aberdeen Highland Games www.bengalla.com.au

Nicola grew up at Kayuga, a property west of Aberdeen and has a strong bond with this area. She was educated in Sydney and Armidale and then became a Chartered Accountant while working in Sydney. Upon returning to the Upper Hunter in 1996 to work at Coolmore Stud, a position she left when she married her husband Tony O’Driscoll. Following three years away in Victoria, she and Tony returned to the Upper Hunter in 2015 to her parent’s property west of Scone where she is currently working on the development of a small herd of Aberdeen Angus cattle. Her late father, David Macintyre, was the first “Chief of the Day” in 2000 and her brother Duncan Macintyre was the “Chief of the Day” for the 10th Aberdeen Highland Games. David Macintyre had been a great supporter of the Scottish culture, funding the Upper Hunter Pipes & Drums in the mid to late 1970’s. Nicola is very proud of her Scottish heritage, with her Great Great Uncle Peter Macintyre arriving in Australia in the early 1820s soon to be followed by her Great Great Grandfather Donald Macintyre. Donald Macintyre obtained the land grant that formed the majority of Kayuga in 1827 and the family owned Kayuga and lived there for over 175 years until 2008. In accepting the position as Chieftain, Nicola would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Charles Cooke and his committee on the creation of the Upper Hunter Tartan. It is a wonderful legacy and something that the People of the Upper Hunter, not only those with Scottish heritage, can be very proud of. In addition she wishes to congratulate the committee on the successful running of 20th Highland Games and looks forward to many more.

Kilted Warriors The Kilted Warriors are a great part of the Aberdeen Highland Games, where athletes compete in a traditional Celtic strongman competition. There is tremendous strength and determination on display when the athletes compete in three traditional events; Stones, Sheaf and Caber Toss. Stones: Clach Cuid Fir (Gaelic for Manhood Stone) is a traditional test of pure strength. The athletes compete against the clock to determine who can lift stones of increasing weights off the ground and onto barrels. With the stones weighing between 100 and 165kg this is not an event for the average person, but it is great to watch. Sheaf Toss: This traditional Scottish agricultural sport involves using a pitchfork to hurl a burlap bag stuffed with straw over a horizontal bar above the competitor’s head. The bag typically weighs about 7kg and athletes are given three chances to get it cleanly over the bar without touching it. The winner is the athlete who can successfully clear the highest bar. Caber Toss: This traditional Scottish athletic event is said to have developed from the need to toss logs across narrow chasms to cross them. Using a large wooden pole, called a caber, the object is not the sheer distance of the throw but rather to have the caber fall directly away from the thrower after landing. A perfect throw ends with the ‘top’ end nearest to the thrower and the ‘bottom’ end pointing exactly away. This is an impressive feat when the caber is typically 5.94m long and weighs 79kg.

Walcha Road Band The members of Walcha Road Band all come from and are based Newcastle NSW. They play a range of dance tunes from Australia and abroad, but the core of their repertoire is traditional Aussie music. The band also sing and teach bush dances. If you haven’t heard of them yet, you’re missing something special. The musicians are: Jeff Lawrie - button accordion and melodeon; Kate Andrews - fiddle; Sandy Gray - flute and anglogerman concertina; Brendan Munns - guitar Jeff, Julie and Sandy all have long associations with traditional folk music. Brendan has a large repertoire covering a broad range of guitar styles and has broadened his expertise in the genre of traditional folk music as the accompanist.

Highland Dancers No event at the Aberdeen Highland Games encompasses such enthusiasm and colour as highland dancing and what better sight and sound can there be that encapsulates the very essence of Scotland than the bagpipes accompanying a kilted dancer, swaying and pirouetting to traditional airs! Highland dancing requires great flexibility, agility, timing and stamina to precisely execute the intricate footwork which makes the dance style so unique. You will see them perform many classic highland dances including the Sword Dance, the Highland Fling and the Seann Trubhas. This mixture of Scottish dance and music always makes the highland dancing a crowd favourite which shouldn’t be missed.

As well as the highland dancing there is country dancing the more social form of Scottish dancing. Scottish country dancing is done in sets typically with three, four or five couples, arranged either in two lines (men facing ladies) or in a square, and involves the dancers dancing a sequence of set formations enough times to bring them back to their starting positions. It’s always great fun and you’ll have plenty of chances to try it at the Ceilidh.

The Upper Hunter Tartan This year the Aberdeen Highland Games Committee will be presenting the 20th Annual Highland Games. To mark this very special occasion and bring all the threads together the committee have produced and have registered in Scotland an Upper Hunter Tartan. This will be a district tartan - Upper Hunter, Muswellbrook and Singleton shires.

Basis of the Tartan UNDER CHECK - The under check is the main component of the tartan pattern. This is formed by the larger areas of colour that underlie the over check of the smaller lines and bands. In this case the under check for this tartan is based on Campbell of Breadalbane. The region has had a connection with the M. Campbell & Co. stores based in the Upper Hunter Valley in the towns of Scone, Aberdeen, Rouchel, Muswellbrook, Merriwa and Denman dating back to the late 1800’s. GREEN - To represent the rich alluvial lands where lucerne abounds supporting the dairy, beef and equine industries. BLUE - The waters of the Hunter and Goulburn River Valleys, including Lake Glenbawn and Lake Liddell, providing the life blood for all those living in the region. It also represents the waters of the seas and oceans that have bought people with skills, machinery, livestock and supplies to weave new beginnings.

20 - Aberdeen Highland Games 2019

OVER CHECK - The over check breaks up the under check pattern. It is made up of a series of thinner stripes that modify the broader swathes of colour. WHITE - For the milk and cream that flowed throughout the Valley to the Aberdeen Butter Factory, the Muswellbrook Milk Factory and the Singleton Cheese factory. BLACK - To represent the black coal seams that underlay the Hunter Valley. PURPLE - To represent the grapes from the vines of the viticultural industry. It also represents the lucerne flowers and the thistle head from the Aberdeen Thistle brand butter. YELLOW - For the golden cereal and canola crops as well as the golden wool clips produced in the valley. RED - As a token of the blood shed by the Light Horseman of the Upper Hunter and of their horses in WW1.

The Upper Hunter Tartan The purpose of the fabric when all is said and done, Is to get us all together and pull again as one. Scots are tough and spartan, but they often strike a tartan To celebrate a milestone of the time, Families of pioneers who came out here to new frontiers, With ambitious aspirations establishing the stations Which then they handed down along the family line. The UNDER CHECK is “Campbell” so the tartan that they wore, Could well have been recycled from the famous Campbell stores Every thread of every shawl whether big or even small, Soon becomes a symbol of the land, Every tartan length comes with unity and strength, For those who came from Scotland and the clans. A Tartan is protection, whether scarf or kilt or shawl, Encompassing the region which covers one and all. Muswellbrook and Rouchel, Scone and Aberdeen, Merriwa and Denman all places in between. One can tell, if woven well, protects against the weather, The thistles, with their prickles that grow amongst the heather. Water’s represented by the “aqua” colour, blue, Without this precious liquid there is nothing we can do. We could not grow the crops or grass, the lucerne on the land, Equine, dairy, beef or wool with Mother Nature’s hand. The OVER CHECK breaks up the broad and makes the cloth distinct, Just as long and just as strong, but clearer and succinct. The white for all the dairy, the milk, the cheese and cream, The black for all the holes of coal; the underlay in seams The purple that is intertwined represents our precious wine, And yellow, which is really bold, stands out for crops and clips of gold. And then of course the colour red that represents the men who bled, And died for us that we might live; the ultimate of gifts to give So for our region do not hide, wear this tartan and with pride. Picture this as precious rope that binds together love and hope Tartan weaved will last and last; those threads of colour will HOLD FAST.

NOTES FOR THOSE WITH

Disabilities

The Aberdeen Highland Games is an action packed day of events with something for all the family. After the Grand Opening Ceremony, which occupies the whole of Harrison Oval, several events take place consecutively at various points on the oval. Whilst visitors with disabilities are welcome, it must be stressed that all events take place on a grassed oval, with no grandstand and limited seating. It is recommended to bring a chair. Harrison Oval is level but access from the entry gate and into the food court is on an incline. Disabled parking is located near the main entry gates. Buses carrying seniors are welcome to drop off their passengers at the entry gate and then return to park in the designated coach parking area. There is one disabled toilet at Harrison Oval, together with ladies and gentlemen’s toilets. It is only once a year that this venue sees the number of visitors that the Aberdeen Highland Games bring and every effort is made to provide sufficient facilities, with an additional two portable disabled-access toilets. Additional toilet facilities are available in the Sport & Recreation Club next to the oval and at the football ground opposite. Lunchtime sees queues at all the food stalls so be prepared for a little wait or alternately elect to eat outside of the popular times of 12 noon to 2pm. The Aberdeen Highland Games is a costly event to stage and no complimentary entry is available. Carers assisting those with disabilities may enter at the concession rate. Companion card accepted.
