2019 SCONE HORSE FESTIVAL OFFICIAL PROGRAM

Welcome to our 2019 Scone Horse Festival... we’re thrilled to have you with us! In these times of drought and resulting hardship, it can help to experience some festival fun and celebrate the Horse Capital of Australia... Scone. Our sponsors, highlighted on the facing page, have all made contributions to support our equine community, the community of Scone and festival followers. Please follow them, thank them and take an interest in them for they have taken an interest in you and your enjoyment of our festival. We’re very much looking forward to celebrating the 40th birthday of our festival in 2020. As a community, we are forever grateful to Jim Rodgers, Mike Pritchard, Barry Chapman and Brian Russell for this vision. And to all of the past Scone Horse Festival committee members and presidents for their verve and rigour in keeping the festival thriving. Our new undercover arena at White Park, opens up many more equine and entertainment opportunities for Scone.

We’re looking forward to the return of the Scone Charity Rodeo in the undercover arena this year. Our theme for this year, ‘Legends, Myths and Fantasy’, is intended to get us talking and thinking about the role the horse has played in myths throughout time, the dreams, stories and fantasies that have come from our equine friends... and that can sometimes help to get us through times of hardship. It also reminds us of all the legends now and throughout history–both the horses themselves and talented, dedicated people who have ridden and/or worked with horses over the years. Many a yarn has been spun about the role of the horse in our lives. This year we are very excited to welcome back one particular horse whispering legend, Guy McLean, to help officially open our festival. Along with Guy, a big thanks to Arrowfield Stud for making his appearance possible. David Gatwood

Scone Horse Festival President

WORLD HORSE CAPITAL OF AUSTRALIA

The new undercover White Park arena officially opened earlier this year and is now available for use in Scone, the Horse Capital of Australia. The White Family purchased the ‘paddock’ from Mr Bakewell for £2,500 and wanted to do something for the townspeople, which resulted in him kindly gifting the land to Council in 1924. Mr A.G. White cut the ribbon across the bricked entrance gates that are still erected and from then on, that paddock was known as White Park. History repeated itself on the opening weekend, in a way, with Dr Judy White OAM of Belltrees, officially opening the arena with a ribbon cutting. The new arena is a magnificent venue that will bring new equine and other entertainment events. It was designed to

fill the gap in the equine sports facilities in the region, complimenting the surrounding facilities in the lower Hunter and Tamworth. There’s undercover seating for 2,864 people under the 90m x 60m roof-a reasonable capacity, for an affordable price. “We’re thrilled to be bringing Guy McLean back for the Scone Horse Festival this year and it will be a fitting venue for such a world class performer. This is just the start of many big acts to come, now that we have an arena of such high standard,“ says David Gatwood, Manager Business Services, Upper Hunter Shire Council, and President of the Scone Horse Festival Committee. www.whitepark.com.au www.upperhunter.nsw.gov.au

SO MUCH TO DISCOVER

ABOUT THOROUGHBREDS

The Hunter Valley has long been famous as the source of thoroughbred racehorses, recognised alongside Kentucky and Ireland as a world-leading nursery of equine athletes. The region’s stud farms have an exceptional collective record as the home of champion stallions and broodmares, and the source of high-priced yearlings and major race winners throughout Australia and around the globe. That success has undoubtedly helped to elevate Scone as the Horse Capital of Australia and attract major investment in thoroughbreds, land, facilities and people throughout the Hunter. Industry participation certainly demands large amounts of money, but on a daily basis it is powered by a deep love and respect for the horse and a commitment to give horses the care and education they need not just for racing, but for the full span of their lives. Although created three centuries ago specifically for racing, the thoroughbred horse is a remarkably versatile breed capable of adapting to other equine sports such as eventing, show-jumping, barrel racing and polo. They can also be found working as police horses, with adults & children who have disabilities and in rehabilitation programs such as the joint venture between Racing NSW and Corrective Services NSW. The Hunter Valley thoroughbred industry supports the work required to help thoroughbred horses transition to new lives. In many cases, stud and stable staff will place them directly or help re-train horses 10

for different disciplines and ensure they will be suitable for leisure riding. Horses whose age, temperament or disability doesn’t allow them to be re-homed are often retained as nannies for younger horses and cared for until the end of their lives. Arrowfield Stud is delighted to sponsor the 2019 Scone Horse Festival and promote the discovery of thoroughbreds as wonderful horses for many lives & worlds beyond racing. www.arrowfield.com.au Above: Arrowfield-bred horse, Pages River (Falbrav-Amaranth) is owned by Corrie Potter in Victoria where he has a wonderful life, now known as Snoopy, doing everything from trail riding & stockmen’s challenges, to barrel racing, show-jumping, dressage and stints with Riding for Disabled (RDA).

CHAMPIONSHIPS

TENTPEGGING EVENTS HAVE BEEN DOCUMENTED IN AUSTRALIA AS FAR BACK AS THE 1880’S. Tentpegging began as a military exercise where mounted soldiers would ride through an enemy camp in a pre-dawn raid, removing the pegs which held the tents in place, with the tips of their sharp lances, thus giving the practice it’s name of Tentpegging.

VAULTING COMPETITION EQUESTRIAN VAULTING IS ONE OF THE MOST SPECTACULAR OF THE EQUESTRIAN SPORTS.

Both dynamic and static gymnastic elements are combined with music and performed on a cantering horse. Full canteen run by the Country Women’s Association will be available on the day. SCONE POLO

THE SCONE POLO CLUB AT GUNDY PROVIDES A WONDERFUL COUNTRY EXPERIENCE. Polo is a team sport played on horseback. The objective is to score goals against an opposing team. Players score by driving a small hard white ball into the opposing team’s goal, using a long-handled wooden mallet. Each polo team consists of four riders and their polo ponies. The modern game usually lasts one to two hours and is divided into periods called chukkas.

COMMUNITY HUBS

SUPPORTING SCONE LOCALS

Both the Scone RSL Club and Scone Sporties are community hubs and have contributed collectively $100,000 in sponsorship and donations to support the Scone community last financial year.

As collective gold sponsors of the Scone Horse Festival, The Scone Sporties and Scone RSL Club have joined forces with the Scone Horse Festival, our gold sponsor, TAB, William Inglis & Sons, and the Scone Race Club to introduce the TAB Triple Header, a great day of golf and lunch followed by the official Inglis Calcutta on Thursday 9th May.

Drought has been an underlying challenge for Scone and the Upper Hunter and the Scone RSL Club contributed $30,000 earlier this year to the Lions Need for Feed to support farmers affected by drought. During April they will be offering 10% of all bar sales and total proceeds of their Friday night raffles to drought relief.

For anyone who would rather kick back and enjoy watching lawn bowls, the Horse Festival Triples Lawn Bowls Championships will be held over at the Scone RSL Club from 9am until around 5pm on the same day. Admission is free.

“Visiting the Scone RSL Club is an affordable outing. Our annual social membership of $4 knocks 50 cents off each beer. It all adds up, but even more importantly, we provide a hub for people to meet, have a yarn and break the intensity that the drought has created” says Michael Hollingsworth, Manager Scone RSL Club and Scone Sporties.

A newly renovated golf course at the Scone Sporties, seemed like the perfect opportunity to combine a great day out in the middle of the Scone Horse Festival, leading into the Scone Cup Carnival.

You can also start your day for the Darley Scone Cup on Friday 10th May with a champagne breakfast at the Scone RSL Club, kicking off at 10am. Return buses will be provided to the race day as part of your $20 champagne breakfast.

“For this reason, we’ve sponsored the Scone RSL Yarns Night this year. It’s all about reviving and continuing the tradition of spinning a good yarn or reciting Australian poetry” he says. www.sconersl.com.au www.sconehorsefestival.com.au

2019 SCONE HORSE FESTIVAL OFFICIAL PROGRAM

THOROUGHBRED HORSE STUDS

WHY THEY BEGAN AND HOW TO EXPERIENCE THEM

The origins of the Hunter Valley’s thoroughbred breeding industry date back to the early1800’s when the first settler and horse breeder George Bowman chose to live and breed horses in the Hunter Valley, describing its perfection for agriculture. Nestled in the valley surrounded by the Wollemi National Park and the Barrington Tops, protected by the valley hills, with lush pastures on the valley floors and close to abundant clean water, the first settlers to this region recognised that it was an unparalleled place to live, work and raise exceptional thoroughbred champions.

For nearly 200 years the Hunter Valley has been home to world-class thoroughbred studs, broodmare farms, veterinarians, saddlers, farriers, equine transport companies, feed merchants, many other equine support industries and thousands of dedicated people with a love of and passion for, horse husbandry. From Jerrys Plains, the gateway to Upper Hunter Country, through Denman to the Widden and Bylong Valleys, east to Muswellbrook and Aberdeen, north to the Segenhoe Valley, Scone and Murrurundi– each stud presents a unique and unparalleled experience. Every farm is a working business. Some are family-owned and operated for many generations. Others private businesses or part of world-leading and world-renown operations. All have a unique story to tell, from their history and heritage to its architecture, the birth and raising of many famous racehorses including the mighty mare “WINX”.

But don’t take our word for it. Come on up!... and see it for yourself. It will be an experience you will never forget. All visitors are invited to experience for themselves the hidden beauty and magic of our stud farms, their history, heritage and the champion horses they produce. Visitors are welcome at our studs but you must book ahead. To arrange a visit or tour please contact the Hunter Thoroughbred Breeders Association at www.htba.com.au/studtours so that we can arrange a memorable experience. www.htba.com.au/studtours

TAB BRINGING GOLD

TO OUR TRIPLE HEADER!

TAB has joined the Scone Horse Festival as a Gold Sponsor for the first time this year. As a key stakeholder in the equine and sporting industry, we are thrilled to welcome them to the festival. Instigated by the Scone Race Club, TAB have combined with them along with the Scone Golf Club, Scone RSL Club, the Upper Hunter Shire Council and William Inglis & Sons, to create the TAB Triple Header, a new event for the Scone Horse Festival this year. Making the most of the newly developed golf course at Scone Golf Club, the TAB Triple Header will combine golf, lunch and the official Scone Cup Calcutta on Thursday 9 May, the eve of the Darley Scone Cup for a great day out, building anticipation for the first of the two day Scone Cup Carnival. As Australia’s premier racing and sports betting operator, it seems fitting that they help us to bring together this line up of golf, lunch, entertainment and a punt in the lead up to the largest, stand-alone country racing carnival in Australia, the Scone Cup Carnival. If you are a racing follower and haven’t experienced Sky Racing Vision, download it from the App Store and watch every race live on the TAB app. www.tab.com.au 36

RACING CITY CSTLAYLSE INS SC ONE COUNTRY

The Scone Race Club, established in 1944, is recognised as one of the premium racing surfaces in New South Wales (NSW).  With this said, it should be no surprise that the two-day Scone Cup Carnival held this year on 10-11 May, is the richest country racing carnival in Australia, offering nearly $2M in prize money across the two days and holds stand-alone metropolitan status.  Being the largest racing event of the year in the Hunter Valley, the enormous trackside marquee dines 1000 patrons in what can only be describe as a one-off racing and social experience. Where else can you purchase a ticket in a marquee and be guaranteed to be dining alongside racing and breeding royalty. The who’s who of the industry embrace the Scone Racing Carnival as their own and enjoy sharing their passion for this terrific event with all attendees. Equally, there are general admission adult tickets for $20 and free entry for children under 13, making it an affordable day out for everyone. It is this racing carnival that highlights Scone’s status as the Horse Capital of Australia and draws an abundance of visitors to our Upper Hunter region.

All ticketing and bus details are available on the Scone Race Club website. This year, the Scone Race Club has mustered the support of new Scone Horse Festival gold sponsor TAB, to create the TAB Triple Header event. Other significant contributors to this exciting new event are the Scone Golf Club, the Upper Hunter Shire Council, Scone Horse Festival, the Scone RSL Club and William Inglis & Sons. With a newly developed golf course the TAB Triple Header will combine golf, Sportsman’s lunch and the official Scone Cup Calcutta on Thursday 9 May. It’s expected to be a great day of camaraderie, laughs and a punt, building anticipation for the two-days of carnival ahead. This gathering of these key organisations further enforces the pivotal and influential role the Scone Race Club plays in supporting the thriving Scone and equine community. www.sconeraceclub.com.au

Warburton Estate Agents has joined the Scone Horse Festival as a gold sponsor this year to bring the Warburton’s & McDonald’s Family Picnic and Finale Fireworks to the extended Scone community on the last day of the 2019 festival - Mothers Day, Sunday 12th May out at Lake Glenbawn. This family picnic parallels the community approach Warburton Estate Agents takes to providing families and couples with the best possible prices and most suitable homes. Many of the residential properties they look after are family homes. Directors Sandy Warburton and Sarah Lorden are grateful to the support given to them and their business from Scone and Upper Hunter extended community. According to Sandy, “It’s really important that we give back to this community. They’ve supported us to become the leading residential estate agent in the area. Aside

from being able to provide the great homes at suitable prices through our business, we want to be able to support the community as a whole.” “A family picnic is such a typical country experience and a really important way for people to connect and socialise in the country, particularly through tough times like this extended drought. A free community picnic like this, with entertainment, rides, ponies and fun for kids, ending in fireworks that our rural community otherwise may not experience, is an essential experience – a way for people to get together and celebrate the end of another great festival.” www.warburtonre.com.au
