RENEWED FAITH
And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; Ephesians 4:23 Regardless of your faith, the papal visit has invoked a universal atmosphere of goodwill in adults and children alike. Even nearby, the thousands of people who gathered for the mass held by Pope Francis on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway in Philadelphia shared renewed faith, in many ways similar to the Muslims that pilgrimage to Mecca – with both historical, religious events, either by accident or coincidence, occurring at relatively the same time.
As a teenager I resented the strict dress code, ridged work schedule and disciplinary teaching styles. And when I walked across the stage to graduate from a Catholic high school I was contemplating how soon I could burn the ugly school uniform I’d been forced to wear for years. To my complete amazement, a smiling Sister Cabrini would fly in from Chicago to witness my high school and college graduation ceremonies.
Indeed, the Pope’s trip was monumental in that he may have singlehandedly restored many broken Catholic parishioners whose faith had wavered after proven molestations were reported. Made worse by the Vatican’s refusal to defrock priests that perpetuated these shameful acts, Catholicism and pedophilia became synonymous. Scores of people fled the faith and lawsuits forced the closings or consolidation of many church parishes and schools. While the Pope’s unprecedented meeting with the victims of sexual abuse and establishment of new protocols to prohibit any future atrocities was long overdue, it was crucial for the survival of the Catholic Church.
Despite the awful stories associated with the Catholic Church this nun instilled in me the first hint and unmitigated gall that I could accomplish anything in life and not remain that pain-filled, shy and broken little girl who originated from the inner-city 46th street projects … and for that I am eternally grateful.
For twelve years I was afforded the privilege of attending Catholic schools – which required mandatory mass attendance, catechism studies, baptism and confirmation ceremonies. My favorite nun was a black woman named Sister Mary Francis Cabrini. She was stern and rarely smiled. She walked around the classroom with a rosary and wooden paddle (that was seldom used) strapped to her waist.
