Think On These Things By Reverend Juanita G. Wingo Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life. Proverbs 4:23

Guard your heart for out of it comes what happens in your life. Keep watch over the thoughts, dreams, visions, and desires of your heart for actions come out of it that will affect you and the people in your life. What you want will happen. Be careful. What you desire will come to pass. Be careful. In a moment, you can think something that will have great consequences. Be careful. Things can get tricky when dealing with the heart. The heart is deceitful. It can deceive you into thinking that things will be all right when reality says they won’t. The heart will deceive you into believing that people are against you when they aren’t. The heart can deceive you into wanting what you cannot have. The heart can deceive you into denial and making excuses when you should face obstacles head on. When presented with hardship, disappointment or disaster, the heart can make you think things you will regret. What you let enter your heart will affect everything you do. Every negative, destructive, harmful thought you allow in your heart will determine what you do and what happens to you. If you wish someone harm, that person could get hurt. If you think murderous thoughts, someone could die. Be careful with your heart. It affects everything you do – how you treat people, how you respond to people, how you live. Stand guard over your heart. Keep out what can do damage. Don’t let what is in your heart hurt yourself or anyone else. Power Magazine n June 2018

APPEARANCES

Stop judging by mere appearances, but instead judge correctly. John 7:24 (NIV) Our news headlines are filled with the tragic events surrounding Mr. Dawnta Harris – a wayward young man, perhaps lost, uneducated, misguided – whose actions ended the life of a police officer. The actions of Mr. Harris represent a deeper systematic problem. Our community has failed many of our young people. Oftentimes when our male population is displaced through incarceration or opioid abuse, they are unable to consistently provide the strong character role models needed to raise successful young men. Unfortunately, we cannot afford the luxury of excuses. Many young people have faced and survived the same challenges Mr. Harris encountered. These young people have succeeded against insurmountable odds. While such stories are quick to get local attention, my concerns are focused on the countless young black males who will continue to feel the brunt of misguided stereotypes perpetuated on black males simply because of appearances. When others would judge incorrectly, focusing on negatives, we must focus on the positive, recognizing the thousands of black males who just marched center stage and graduated from universities all across this nation. Yes, many may have faced fatherlessness, brokenness and fear. Yet they still stood solid on the front lines of brutality and racism and made the correct life choices. Recently, the country also witnessed the inhumane treatment of Mr. Rashon Nelson and Mr. Donte Robinson, who are entrepreneurs and were arrested after a Starbucks employee became weary of their presence. These gentleman used this opportunity to give back to the Philly community by receiving a dollar settlement from the city and requesting

a two hundred thousand dollar fund to help high school students who desired to become future entrepreneurs. They apparently decided a fund set-aside was the best way to effectuate change. There are plenty of other men who quietly continue to step-up to the plate in assisting our children to safely make it into adulthood. Still, I wonder how many more Mr. Dawnta Harris have we failed. Ms. Tanika Harris said that she made repeated pleas for help for her son. Where was the male influence in this young child’s life? What organizations are in place to catch these children before they become inmates? Could the educational system have intervened due to his truancy record? Where are the block captains and leaders? There is enough blame to go around. If iron sharpens iron then we missed the opportunity to bend this young man in a different direction. Mr. Harris’ tragic actions can serve as a reset button, that we must all push to save our youth. We must do better Baltimore. Until next time, “To God Be The Glory!” Be sure to listen to me & Rev. William Wingo on Fridays on WOLB 1010 livestream from 12:00 Noon to 1:00pm.
