An Intimate Conversation with Rev. Dr. Melvin Jackson “From Humble Beginnings” Rev. Dr. Melvin Jackson is one of six children born to Mckinley and Louise Jackson, who came to Baltimore from South Carolina. He grew up on a small street between Fulton Avenue and Monroe Street named Vine Street and later in the Reisterstown Road area. He graduated from Northwestern High School. Dr. Jackson loved sports and had envisioned a pro sport career in football until an injury in college ended that plan. He thanks his mother for encouraging him to study and maintain good grades. For when the sports dream faded, the discipline and determination learned from sports allowed him to excel academically. He went on to graduate from the Community College of Baltimore with an Associate of Arts Degree and from Morgan State University with both a Bachelor of Science and Master of Art Degree. Dr. Jackson married the late Patricia Jackson and they had one daughter, Tunia Michelle Jackson. He served on the Deacon Board of the Gillis Memorial Christian Community Church for more than 20 years and became Chairman of the Board. After 27 years of marriage, God called his wife home. It was during this time of loss that God called Dr. Jackson into the ministry. He served as a Manager for the Maryland Stadium Authority, the organization responsible for operating and maintaining Oriole Park and M&T Stadium. In 2002, he answered God’s calling and returned to school to study God’s Word. He received a Master of Divinity Degree from Wesley

Theological Seminary in Washington, DC, and a Doctor of Ministry from Ashland Theological Seminary in Ohio. In 2012, Dr. Jackson married Dorethea Jackson and they have one son, Donald Chambers, a daughter, Tunia Hammonds, a son in-law, Husani Hammonds, and two grandchildren, Kayla and Aiden Hammonds. Dr. Jackson loves to travel and to proclaim the Word of the Lord. He has visited several foreign countries including Israel, South Africa, China, Lesotho, and Mexico. Recently, he has returned from following in the footsteps of the Apostle Paul, where he visited cities in Turkey, Greece and Italy. He has been afforded the opportunity to proclaim God’s Word in this country and abroad. Dr. Jackson, who is affectionately called, “Pastor Melvin,” proclaims his love of the Lord and his Gillis Memorial Church family, where he has been elected and serves as Pastor along with Rev. Dr. Theodore C. Jackson, Jr. Pastor Melvin is a humble, spirit-filled man of God who has come to serve the people of God. His favorite scripture is “Seek ye first the Kingdom of God,” Matthew 6:33 and his favorite song is “Precious Jesus.”

Think On These Things By Reverend Juanita G. Wingo

The Prayer That God Answers When ye pray, say… ~Luke 11:2

Our prayers arise out of panic, anxiety, urgent need, or desperation. We pray from our perspective and decide the petition based on what we see. Most of the time we don’t know what to ask for or even how to frame our asking. We make assumptions and assessments and try to figure out how to pray. We arrogantly presume that out of God’s love for us the answer that we want will come. place.

We see a need and we leap. Our requests end up all over the

We search the scriptures for prayers to pray confident that if we pray His Word, God has to answer. We throw in everything but the kitchen sink and then we fast to force answers for prayers we want answered. But God says, when you pray, say what I tell you to say. Then you will begin to understand what prayer is and how to pray. The disciples asked Jesus to teach them how to pray. There was no assumption on their part that they knew what they needed to know. They asked. Only God knows what is needed. So, we must ask God’s permission to pray because prayer releases His authority in the situation. When we humble ourselves and ask permission, God will tell us what to pray for. This prayer will release the authority of God. Now we can fast. Fasting puts power behind the authority. And the answer will come. The prayer that God answers is the prayer that God gives. Power Magazine n JUNE 2014 VOTE IN THE PRIMARY - JUNE 24, 2014

Presiding Elder Douglas Leaves Behind a Healthy District and Wise Leaders as He Approaches Retirement Celebration by Samuel Williams, Jr. According to The Rev. Goodwin Douglas, who serves as presiding elder of the Capitol District of the Second Episcopal District of the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church, said eleven words in a New Testament scripture best describes his service to his Lord and Savior Jesus and the AME Church: I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me [Philippians 4:13]. Clergy and members throughout the country will flock to Martin’s Crosswinds, located at 7400 Greenway Center Drive in Greenbelt, Md. to join Presiding Elder Goodwin at his grand retirement celebration from noon - 4 p.m. on June 14. For more information call (301) 265-1816 or send an email request to DouglasRetirement@ hotmail.com. According to Douglas, the Philippians scripture has been the guide to dealing with his ministerial career as a pastor and his rise to the presiding elder position. “The scripture means to me that in my work as a pastor and presiding elder, I could never carry excess baggage,

especially negative feelings, in my spiritual life. It is a positive scripture for me because wherever God carried me in my life, I was given the courage to press toward the prize of my high calling and to give it my all at any level He took me. There are a lot of things that could hold one back if they held on to mistakes from the past. In order to forget them and move forward by faith in Christ Jesus I often relied in the comfort of that scripture.” And Douglas takes great pride in accomplishing the three major goals God set for him when he undertook his rle as presiding elder. Those goals were: 1.) To give pastors and congregations a real sense of spiritual worth that they are truly somebody in God’s kingdom; 2.) To raise the overall spiritual consciousness of the Capitol District; and 3.) To develop healthy and growing churches. “I was able by God’s grace to increase the district from 25 churches to 40 over the course of my tenure and i am especially proud of that. I also was able to teach our pastors that they cannot have the questions to spiritual issues but that it was important that he or she has the answers by seeking God’s will in every matter. I was able to help our pastors look at each member of

their congregation from a holistic point of view. That each member cannot be dissected and evaluated on one particular aspect of their lives, that pastors must look at a congregant from the spiritual, physical and mental aspects in order to truly lead and help them. For any AME district to grow, it is essential to have a wise and healthy leadership.” One of the most difficult areas in the church that Douglas said he faced throughout his career was handling the delicate balance of being “loyal” to leadership. “I had to overcome the need to be loyal to what was right in the eyes of the Lord and not to man edicts. I had to learn being loyal to man’s wishes sometimes get you in trouble because you may be asked to do something not spiritual in order to meet a particular goal. If you are doing the right thing and someone in authority wants you to do otherwise, you simply must stay grounded in your faith. I overcame this particular challenge by being grounded in my faith that I was being lead by the Holy Spirit and develop confidence and self worth in Christ. The answer may not come immediately but I learned to simply wait on the Lord for the solutions.” Douglas said he also instilled in his pastors to separate their spiritual obligation as a leader from what they felt personally about a person or situation they were dealing with. “I tried to teach my pastors that the Holy Spirit is leading all things and that personal feelings have no place in their leadership.

Sometimes when people get some power in a spiritual role, they allow emotions and feelings to become their guide as opposed to relying on the Holy Spirit. Pastors have to become encouragers and not judges of people and situations.” What next for Douglas after retirement? “My next phase is to continue to be there as an advisor and helper to assist the newly appointed presiding elder and pastors to help guide them with their current visions or simply help them realize God’s vision for them. In our roles as pastors, we must seek new possibilities in ministry.” The son of the late Elder Charles and Sis. Rosa Lee Douglas, Rev. Douglas was born and raised in Somerset , Bermuda and he received his early childhood education, through junior high, in Bermuda. In 1960, Rev. Douglas left Bermuda and came to the United States to attend Kittrell High School in Kittrell, North Carolina. After graduation from high school, he attended and graduated from Kittrell College. Rev. Douglas has also studied at Virginia Union University and the University of West Virginia earning a certificate in Labor Relations. He has received several honorary degrees including an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from B. F. Lee Seminary in Jacksonville, Florida; an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Jackson Theological Seminary in Little Rock, Arkansas and an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from the University of Monrovia in Monrovia Liberia. n

The Church Tea

For All The Girls I’ve Loved In case you have been living under a rock, much of the civilized world is shocked by the 200 kidnapped Nigerian girls at the hands of an ultra-radical, Islamic, extremist group called Boko Haram (figuratively meaning “Western education is sin”). These young woman ages 16-18 were simply eager for an education. They were taken from families that cried loud enough for the world to respond – finally shaming their government into action against the perpetrators of this injustice. It has been said that when you educate a boy he will take care of his family … When you educate a girl she will take care of a generation. We don’t have to look past our own families to see that our girls have been kidnapped by a society that gives props for things that don’t contribute to their physical or mental wellbeing. Since our girls don’t often listen to us (they imitate us), let’s start by setting the example in the way we live; The way we care for each other and ourselves; The way we handle conflict and grief; The way we allow men to treat us; Never becoming comfortable in the role as the spare woman; Never becoming complacent when you know a girlfriend is in an abusive situation. Let’s never fail to give our girls the courage to continue any educational endeavor. Many (if not most) of us try hard to mind our own business. As Christians God forbid we might actually offend

someone or worse yet be wrong about something. Somehow we must find the courage to speak up and then show out. I remember reading a speech given by a German man named Martin Niemöller on January 16, 1946: When the Nazis came for the communists, I remained silent; I was not a communist. When they locked up the social democrats, I remained silent; I was not a social democrat. When they came for the trade unionists, I did not speak out; I was not a trade unionist. When they came for the Jews, I remained silent; I wasn’t a Jew. When they came for me, there was no one left to speak out. Let’s speak out for our girls. They are precious. They are our life and future. God has blessed us with the awesome opportunity to raise, guide, strength and protect them.
