Welcome As the winter draws in, our programme is full of delights for you to get tucked up and cosy with here at The Point! This season I’m particularly excited by our contemporary drama programme. The renowned Propeller present their pocket version of Henry V and we are thrilled to bring one of the country’s greatest theatre companies here – a definite must see. We also bring you The Paper Cinema’s Odyssey; theatre as you have never seen it before, with beautiful puppetry and cinematic projection; plus the innovative Beady Eye with a new piece called Cooking Ghosts, a moving story of a woman who has no choice but to leave her children. Our dance programme features some exceptional talent including Vincent Dance Theatre and we welcome back Point Associate Company Lîla Dance (opposite.) Alongside this we welcome Point Associates ZoieLogic Dance Theatre, who push the boundaries of male dance and wowed audiences last year with their work. Add into this exciting mix some comedy, including a new monthly comedy night from Barnstormers, a programme of high-quality work for children and their families and our Christmas production, The Snow Queen, by The Point Youth Theatre and we hope there is a winter warmer for everyone! We look forward to welcoming you!

Lîla Dance presents the premiere of

The Incredible Presence of a Remarkable Absence Thursday 27th September 7.30pm We welcome back Point Associate Artists Lîla Dance as they present a double bill featuring their new work; a re-imagining of the world created by Samuel Beckett in Waiting For Godot. Lîla Dance’s tragic-comedy shifts between tender, absurd, and bittersweet scenarios as four peculiar personalities wait for their salvation. Urgent movement and sporadic dialogues become dynamic forces that relieve them from the overwhelming realisation that there is, in fact, nothing to be done. As the dark and heavy weight of time descends, the doubts and fears buried in the hearts of each character bubble to unpredictable ends. Where they are, and where here is, seems to be on the edges of their memory yet as hard as they try together or alone they can’t quite uncover the answer. The performance also includes the duet A Readiness which toured to great acclaim in 2011. Tickets: £12 Conc. £10 Student £8 www.liladance.co.uk

Exclusive opportunity to work with Lîla Dance We are looking for adult dancers (aged 21+) to take part in a choreographic project with Lîla Dance to create a special site-specific performance before their show here. Participants must have previous dance experience and be able to commit to four workshop days prior to the performance. This unique project costs just £40. Vincent Dance Theatre presents

Motherland

Thursday 11th October 7.30pm

Inching its way through airbrushed beauty, boob jobs and Botox, victimblaming, slut-shaming, the might of motherhood and the challenges of childlessness, MOTHERLAND is a funny and moving show about having it all. In MOTHERLAND, Vincent Dance Theatre’s brilliant, multi-talented ensemble of 11 men, women and children take a look at the gender they were born into and the price they are paying for it. Spurred on by Simone de Beauvoir, Caitlin Moran and the Spice Girls, Vincent goes into battle with the big boys, arguing against a narrow, over-sexualized definition of femininity to ask what it is that we really, really want. Blending dance, text and live music in a series of constantly shifting vignettes, MOTHERLAND is a call to arms: one that sticks two fingers up at the shallow hypocrisies and inequalities of our time and asks ‘what do we hope for now?’ MOTHERLAND is commissioned by Brighton Dome and Festival, South East Dance, Corn Exchange Newbury, The Point Eastleigh and Peak Performances @ Montclair State University, USA. VDT is a National Portfolio Organisation, funded by Arts Council England.

ZoieLogic Dance Theatre presents the premiere of

Echo

Wednesday 17th October 7.30pm

A cast of five male dancers, strong narrative, a powerful musical score and innovative technical set promise an unforgettable audience experience. When is innocence lost? What happens when Arthur is pushed to a point of decision, backed into a corner where only his choice matters? Does he return to the safe place that never changes? Is ignorance bliss? Or do his actions take him by surprise? We all have choices to make. Every action has a reaction. Arthur’s story is simply about wanting his scissors back.

Wednesday 5th December 7.30pm Double Bill The Point & South East Dance present

Jane Mason

Singer

.... I dream about the sewing machine, it was my mother’s. The weight of it, the rattle sound when she carried it, the sound of the lock. I want to open it up, to take it into a room and to make something with it.... Jane Mason’s solo Singer unfolds, using the most minimal of means. She works with space, weight, movement, rhythm and voice to construct ephemeral and fragile architectures - temporary ‘homes’ and ‘worlds’ - inhabited by contoured memories of arrival and displacement, connection and separation, love and longing.

Photographer: Kevin Clifford

Mysteriously, her components are organised in ways that provoke feelings and suggest narratives that reverberate within us. For somehow we recognise these structures of feeling - and as she moves, memory stirs, and gently ‘sings’ us.

Theo Clinkard

Ordinary Courage

‘we are defined by how well we rise after falling’ Renowned dancer, Theo Clinkard creates a rousing new group work that brims with highly charged and eloquent physicality. Set to a haunting original score by Alan Stones, including live piano, Ordinary Courage follows a community in repair, harnessing the capacity for movement and touch to communicate when words are not enough. A stripped back space, starkly lit by Zerlina Hughes, becomes the canvas for breathtaking performances. Clinkard completes an outstanding six-strong cast in this UK premiere drawn from the likes of Random Dance, Akram Khan, Richard Alston, Siobhan Davies, Sydney Dance Company and Australian Dance Theatre.

The Demon Barbers

The Lock In! Tuesday 20th November 7.30pm The UK’s No.1 Folk & Hip-Hop Dance Extravaganza! The outrageously athletic, awardwinning Demon Barbers take English Folk music on a new journey, taking friends Hip Hop, House, Funk and Ska, with a nod to Burlesque and Drum & Bass, along the way in this exciting new show. A group of street dancers arrive at a deserted pub. Local rumour has it that The Fighting Cocks is the place to be ‘after hours’, but as the regulars arrive a clash of cultures turns into a dance floor stand-off. Sword dances are performed with snooker-cues, pub bouncers dance the Morris and B-boys flirt with clog girls. Fast-paced and innovative, The Lock In! sees a mix of some of the UK’s top clog, sword and Morris dancers go head-tohead with their counterparts from the worlds of B-boying, popping & krump set to the powerhouse of The Demon Barber’s distinctive, twisted and punchy folk soundscape. Cheek Mountain Thief Plus support Monday 10th September 7.30pm Curated by former Tunng co-founder, producer and Iceland inhabitant Mike Lindsay, Cheek Mountain Thief is a new experimental folk project. Arriving to Iceland in 2011 with no music, songs or direction, using only borrowed equipment and instruments from local musicians, Cheek Mountain Thief is a product of and shaped by Lindsay’s idyllic location – a sound created under the light of the aurora bourealis. Named after the Kinna Fell in Husavik Iceland, (Cheek Mountain), this haunting new material is threaded with a warm melodious tone which resonates in layers of darkness and light. Predominately acoustic, the rich fusion of indie-folk has been created using no electronic equipment other than a Dx7 synth. No stranger to collaboration, having been involved in projects such as the Tunng / Tinariwen BBC session and subsequent UK tour, Lindsay has drawn upon the talents of Silla (mr Silla) from Mum, Sindri Már Sigfússon from Sin Fang and Icelandic behemoth Mugison, all bringing the final sound of Cheek Mountain Thief together, with the final mix at the hands of Mum’s Gunni Tynes. Danny Braverman presents

Wot? No Fish!!

With support from the Jewish Community Centre for London Friday 9th November 1pm & 7.30pm In 1926, Ab Solomons brought his wage packet home for his wife Celie. As a token of his love, he doodled on the packet. From that day on, Ab drew Celie a cartoon every week, recording the ups and downs of their family’s life… A chronicle full of humour and sadness, Ab’s cartoons draw you in to the extraordinary lives of ordinary people; coping with life, death, catering, parenting, making ends meet, wartime and even more catering!

Danny Braverman’s solo show is the first public sharing of Ab’s remarkable art by a storyteller with a unique connection to the story. This is a story that will charm and move anyone from 9 to 99 (and maybe older), with a chance to see some of Ab’s art at first-hand. Ab and Celie went on a journey along a road that went uphill both ways – but it was a journey they took together… Tickets: £8 / Conc. £6 / Special Schools offer £2 per person

The Strange Names Collective presents

Prologue Thursday 4th October 6.45pm Prologue is a ribbon-cutting event, unable to reach its conclusion, an irrational ritual for bringing the future into being, and a mazelike lecture, without a fixed subject. Under the uncanny gaze of humanity’s successors Prologue seeks the connections between Coal Miner’s Canaries, Car Crashes, Recurring Dreams, The Human Appendix, Shark Attacks, Liberache, the Portuguese Man of War and the Little Orphan Annie. Through a use of footnotes, personal asides, images, movement, film and sound, Prologue is a bittersweet exploration of the twinned notions of the future and potential.
