Welcome Welcome to The Berry Theatre’s Autumn season which I am delighted to announce features our second home grown Christmas production. This year we join forces with Theatre Hullabaloo to present a magical new version of classic fairytale The Elves and the Shoemakers by Olivier Award winning playwright Mike Kenny. Packed with live music, fantastic puppetry and a good dose of elf mischief! Other highlights include our free festival weekend sponsored by Hedge End Town Council and some great comedy from the likes of Marcus Brigstocke. We also welcome back Blackeyed Theatre (Oh What a Lovely War) with their explosive version of Mother Courage and Her Children. I look forward to welcoming you this autumn!

The Berry Theatre & Theatre Hullabaloo present
In a new version by Mike Kenny. Directed by Sarah Brigham. Music by Ivan Stott. Designed by Bek Palmer A tale of magic and mischief for families. Once, there were two shoemakers who were very old and very poor, so poor they couldn’t even afford to buy Christmas presents for each other. With no wood for their fire and only one piece of leather left to make a final pair of shoes, there was little festive cheer on Christmas Eve in the shoemakers’ shop on the corner. But that night, just as the snow drifted down outside and the clock struck midnight, two little Elves decided to spread a little bit of magic which would make a whole lot of difference. Live music, puppetry, physical storytelling and a bit of Elf magic combine to tell this classic tale. Tickets: £11 / £9 conc. Blackeyed Theatre in association with South Hill Park present
Mother Courage And Her Children By Bertolt Brecht. Translated by Lee Hall. Directed by Tom Neill “They’re waging war for Almighty God and in the name of everything that’s good and lovely, but look closer, they ain’t so silly” Mother Courage. Two ideologies collide in a conflict that stretches across a continent and threatens the balance of world power. In its midst, one woman, her three children by her side, sees an opportunity to survive, and the time is about to come when she must make the ultimate sacrifice. 6
Regarded by many as the greatest play of the 20th century, Mother Courage And Her Children asks fundamental questions about the effects our beliefs have on the world and the role of ideology in society and world affairs. Lee Hall’s (The Pitmen Painters, War Horse screenplay) brilliant translation of Brecht’s masterpiece is accessible, fresh and bang up-to-date.

An evening with
Tony Benn In conversation with…
Veteran Labour politician Tony Benn talks about his extraordinary life and career. Discover what the man who famously left parliament to “spend more time on politics” thinks about the modern Labour party. Prepare yourself for some straighttalking, frank responses and entertaining political anecdotes. “I think people are fed up with sound-bites, spin, sensation and scandal from politicians.” says Benn. “What people really want is a chance to discuss issues that affect all our lives and to have that discussion in a sensible, uninterrupted and civilised manner.” Where better, he argues, than in a theatre - one of the few platforms for proper political debate today? “I get quite excited by the opportunity to bring politics back to the people…which is probably not a good thing for a man of my age!” he laughs.
