Theatre Unlimited presents

Stalin’s Favourite Direct from the National Theatre In 1941, the huge popularity of his poem, ‘Wait For Me’, unwittingly projected Konstantin Simonov into the literary stratosphere. Virtually overnight Simonov became Stalin’s favourite writer, but struggled to retain his integrity in a world of moral compromises. Years later, ageing and unwell, Simonov looks back on a lifetime as part of Stalin’s Soviet elite and confronts his demons. Adapted from Orlando Figes’ ground-breaking book ‘The Whisperers’, ‘Stalin’s Favourite’ provides an emotionally engaging and personal human insight into these momentous historical events. This is the production’s first major tour. The show will premiere at the National Theatre in November 2011.

Defying Hitler

Adapted from the award-winning memoir of the same name, ‘Defying Hitler’ is a candid, witty and extremely moving account of a young man growing up in the shadow of Hitler’s Third Reich. Born in Berlin in 1907, Sebastian Haffner lived through virtually every major political event in German history from the outbreak of the First World War in 1914 until his eventual emigration to England in 1938. Haffner wasn’t a Nazi and he wasn’t Jewish. He was just a sensitive and highly intelligent but otherwise ordinary German, striving to come to terms with the madness that was Nazi Germany. This production premiered at the National Theatre and has toured both throughout the UK and to the Brits Off Broadway Festival in New York. Tickets: £11 / £9 conc.

Combining family drama and comedy with regional history and local identity, this new play tells the story of a group of people who created a part of our heritage. 10

It is the spring of 1966 and two local families are preparing for the biggest challenge of the year. Can they put aside their differences in time to deliver the orders for the region’s famous strawberries?
