Welcome Summer 2012 marks the twentieth year of The Eastleigh dance Festival! As we celebrate our birthday we are reaffirming our ambition to use the Festival as a perfect excuse to get everyone young and old dancing! You’ll see we’ve programmed a number of community events to get you involved and moving as well as some fantastic performances and a beautiful exhibition by acclaimed Dance Photographer Jim Markland for those who prefer to just look and watch! Why not join us for a foot stomping Ceilidh a perfect opportunity for all the family; or come alone – no partner needed! Or join us when there will be dancing on the streets with an outdoor performance of SPUN Productions by StopGAP Dance Company. The rest of our programme also has the vibrancy of summer about it with the usual mix of high-quality contemporary theatre, dance and performance, from the very funny Tim Clare’s How to be a Leader to The Actors Touring Company’s version of acclaimed Playwright Sarah Kane’s Crave, plus the return of our ever popular music festival.

We look forward to welcoming you to a whole host of events throughout the summer and on Page 24 we’ve even included some hints on our Autumn Season too! We look forward to welcoming you to The Point,

Illusions By Ivan Viripaev

Translated by Cazimir Liske I guess that’s how it was meant to be. Love can only be mutual, I agree with you Albert, and forgive me for this cruel sincerity. Love & death, loyalty & betrayal, truth & fiction, hope & despair, this beguiling new comedy takes us through a hall of mirrors. Russia’s foremost contemporary playwright and screenwriter, Ivan Viripaev, has won several major awards for his work including the prestigious Golden Mask, the Presidential Council Prize for Literature in Russia and awards at the Venice, Warsaw and Sochi Film Festivals. Ramin Gray directs Ivan Viripaev’s English language debut. That’s it, a little story.

Site-specific theatre from Total Theatre Award Winning Company 2011. The Point’s ladies toilets are transformed into a unique setting for storytelling and theatricality in this imaginative and hauntingly beautiful piece. Virginia Woolf was missing for days before she was eventually found drowned. We wondered where she was for all of this time...but figured she was probably just in the ladies toilets (with Ophelia of all people). Looking for something to do, our two half-drowned literary heroines become obsessed with passing patron, Romola. www.shadyjane.co.uk

A Real Man’s Guide to Sainthood 7pm

A feisty retelling of England’s Patron Saint George and his journey from boy to man to courageous warrior. What happens when a story centuries old is still celebrated without question centuries on? What happens when traditions are held purely because they are traditional? In a year of national pride and global celebration of “heroic” athleticism, Milk Presents explore what it really means to be a British man. Fusing original live music and anarchic storytelling, this is a low-fi spectacular for an adult audience. www.milkpresents.com

“undeniably beautiful music”

Fuse the most fragile and graceful end of the folk music spectrum to the most luminous properties of cinemascope rock, and you have the stunning Newcastle-based sextet Lanterns On The Lake. Following two rapturously received EPs, using often over-played adjectives such as “celestial”, “swooning” and “absolutely gorgeous”. They use an array of instruments (guitars, violin, mandolin, piano, synths, glockenspiels, kalimba) to paint a variety of beautiful vistas.

Music Festival Friday 25th May doors from 6.30pm

Treacherous Orchestra The Treacherous Orchestra’s story is one of many strands; a tale told spanning the length and breadth of Scotland. An un-definable collective force fusing people, concepts, styles and influences, shaping a musical supergroup that defy description. From the North to the South, East to the West they came, converging in the musical melting-pot of Glasgow, trading ideas over beers and playing music with ferocity, verve and passion. This is a tale of musical origins… Support from

Alasdair Roberts & Mairi Morrison Lewis-born Gaelic singer Mairi Morrison and German-born Scottish singer Alasdair Roberts’ stunning new Gaelic/English song album, Urstan, will be released by Drag City Records in March 2012.

“That sweet, sweet, euphoric music. Once again, it dived into my soul and dazzled my senses. Wooed me and seduced me. There was only one thing to do. Get to the front and dance” – BBC Simone Smith

Moulettes Moulettes’ idiosyncratic brand of modern folk music with elements of prog-rock, gypsy, classical and swing has led to comparisons with The Unthanks to Tom Waits and Shostakovich. But, they possess a beguiling sound and presence all of their own.

Bel Ami

(15)

Based on the 1885 novel by French author Guy de Maupassant, Bel Ami chronicles young journalist Georges Duroy’s corrupt rise to power in Paris, most of which he achieves by manipulating a series of powerful, intelligent, and wealthy mistresses.

(PG)

Based on the Benjamin Mee memoir of the same name, We Bought a Zoo is an amazing and true story about a single dad who decides his family needs a fresh start, so he and his two children move to the most unlikely of places: a zoo. With the help of an eclectic staff, and with many misadventures along the way, the family works to return the dilapidated zoo to its former wonder and glory.
