South East Dance and The Point present

Pre:View – Shane Shambhu Company

Leaving only a Trace

Thursday 23rd February 6.30pm

The Point and South East Dance are delighted to present Shane Shambhu Company. The Company create dynamic visual theatre rooted in the traditional South Indian dance form of Bharata Natyam. By representing the modern society we live in and depicting narratives that expose human experiences and behaviour the company creates works that stir up emotions in all of us. Through innovative physical storytelling and the use of devised characters, the company transports audiences through an emotional journey and a shared aesthetic experience to question themes of universal relevance. The company uses an organic movement language stemming from Shane Shambhu’s backgrounds in Bharata Natyam, contemporary dance and theatre. By integrating all these forms and creating a unique style of theatre, the company is re-inventing Indian dance as an approach to building theatrical performances. Tickets are free to audiences of Shobana Jeyasingh’s Classic Cut, but must be reserved in advance as capacity is limited. Pre:View is a South East Dance initiative that supports early career artists and choreographers, it allows artists to test out new work and enables audiences to spot the dance talent of tomorrow.

Sadhana Dance presents the premiere of

Elixir

Thursday 9th February 7.30pm Combining contemporary choreography, sculpture, installation, projection and an original soundtrack, Elixir is an evocative and provocative evening of dance and visual art that explores our cultural relationship with water. Elixir was inspired by artistic director Subathra Subramaniam’s experiences in India, the High Arctic and urban London and with the Inuit community in Nunavut Canada and Greenland. Featuring digital projections and live singing, the audience enter a world where they emotionally and intimately engage with the issues and relationships we have with water. Drawing from the rich vocabulary of Bharata Natyam, the dancers weave in and out of rituals and play, struggles and survival, scarcity and instability. The movements are born out of our everyday lives and practices in a fragile world of ever decreasing freshwater. PP

Probe presents Antonia Grove in

Small Talk By Wendy Houstoun

Thursday 15th March 7.30pm We welcome back Antonia Grove of Probe in this virtuosic display of disguise and derangement specially created by Wendy Houstoun. Dance goddess Antonia Grove is widely acknowledged for her intuitive intelligence and versatility as a performer, Wendy Houstoun is also one of the most original artists of her generation, with an international reputation for solo work. In her first ever such creation for another protagonist, Houstoun channels her capacity to make lucid and humourous observations on contemporary culture into Small Talk, a screen test for a B movie actress embodied by a series of edgy, sexy and unpredictable transformations. Using stand-up singing, sit down talking, monosyllabic dancing and fast talking movement, the metamorphic Grove embraces the chameleon desire to be all things to all people.
