Everything is meant for Society and not the other way round President, JECRC University, Prof. D.P. Mishra talks about the Science and Art of Journalism

Lakshika and Sadiq Jaipur. Prof. D.P. Mishra, Renowned Academician and President, JECRC University talked with Student Journalists, Lakshika Mathur and Sadiq Khan of Department of Journalism & Mass Communication, JECRC University, Jaipur. President covered topics about art, science and values of Journalism. Dr. Mishra did his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from IIT Bombay, M. Tech. in Chemical Engineering from BITS Pilani, B. Tech. in Chemical Engineering from BIT Sindri. Here are the excerpts of the interview; Lakshika: What is Journalism and what should it be? Means the Science and Art of Journalism Prof. Mishra: A Journalist has to be careful about facts. Today, almost everything is being covered, but there are some things, some obvious things which are not. Only someone’s keen eyes or a keen mind can pick it up. Nobody noticed an apple is fall-

ing because of gravity, although everybody saw it everyday. Every time it fell, it was conveying that I am falling because of gravity. But it was the keen and persistent mind of Issac Newton who discovered it. There are things around us in the environment that are waiting to be discovered, what’s required is attention. So being attentive is one of the key aspects of Journalism. So observe, analyze and conclude. Sadiq: What do you think about values and Journalism? Prof. Mishra: Well, Journalists have

to watch before they say something. You know there are some things, which must be deliberately hidden. The attitude of a Journalist should be to save society’s virtues. Like, if something wrong happens, there will be a talk, that’s how the things go on, and if there’s an elderly person, he will try to stop it. Why?

Because, it will further harm the society. Journalism, or Engineering or anything else, everything is meant for society and not the other way round. So the moral aspect must be overriding. I am saying all this, because Journalists, you are the people with social responsibility. Lakshika: What do you think about present status and values of Indian Journalism? Prof. Mishra: Let me tell you something, couple of days back, two Journalists came to me. They said, journalism and education are businesses. You see, Gandhiji was also a journalist. He published a newspaper ‘Harijan’. Was it meant for

business? Did he make money? The purpose was to create a communication among people. Journalism is meant to communicate important discourse to people. Again, I want to repeat, society is not meant for anything, everything is meant for society. And everything is a commerce today, reaping money by any means. The morale of the society has gone so low, it goes as low as a thug robbing people. There are some journalists, you know, who threatens people, saying ‘I want this, otherwise I’ll expose you’. I rarely find someone whom I can refer to as a good journalist. When people ask me the best example of a journalist, I reply them, ‘Gandhi’. And if we talk about education. Actually, they are earning a lot, because they are doing scientific researches, they earn that way. Journalism is a mission. Yes, definitely. Well, a good profession can be a mission.

Social media addiction is a bigger problem than you think

It is engineered to be as habit-forming as crack cocaine Lakshika Mathur Jaipur. What is a little shocking are some recent studies by the Pew Research Center which prove just how addicted teens (ages 13 to 17) really are to social media platforms and the internet overall. 24% of teens admit to going online “almost constantly” -- that’s 1 in 4 who are online all the time! According to several recent brain imaging studies, severely effected Internet addicts show structural and functional brain abnormalities similar to those found in people with substance abuse problems. Other research has shown that Internet addiction frequently coexists with anxiety, depression, or an addiction to other things like alcohol or drugs. Social networks are massively addictive. Most people I know check and

interact on social sites constantly throughout the day. And they have no idea how much actual time they spend on social media. If you’re a social media addict, and your addiction is getting worse, there’s a reason for that: Most of the major social network companies, as well as social content creators, are working hard every day to make their networks so addictive that you can’t resist them. In addition, studies of people who received treatment for conditions like depression or anxiety did report “improvement of symptoms of Internet addiction” when the other condition was treated. Over 70% of teens have smart phones which means they have access to the internet which in turn means they have easy access to pornography.

Most teens are on their phones all the time - in school, in bed at night, when they go to the bathroom, while you are trying to talk to them, and while they are trying to do their homework. They are in instant access with each other all the time - living in a perpetual state of staccato interruptions. There are virtually no enforceable societal or parental controls short of depriving a child of a phone which then subjects them to rejection from their real and virtual friends. The popularity contests of childhood are on-line now and revolve around how many “likes” you get. A low number of “likes” typically translates into low social status, and possible shaming and bullying. A high number of “likes” translates to popularity and the pressure to sustain your status.

in 2011 while she was resisting them committing a crime. As a result, one of her legs got amputated below the knee. For 7 hours, she was lying on railway track, but still she is alive. In that video, Arunima sinha speaks about the incident of her life and how she fought. After her accident, she lost her one leg, but she decided to climb up the mount Everest. She faced so many problems, but at the last she climbed up the mountain, In a way, whole session was based on the theme ‘how to motivate yourself and make your way clear’.
