Geeli Mitti Farms: Be an asset to Earth A start up which is constructing mud houses and training women in self-defence

Muskan Kumawat Jaipur: Budding journalist of JECRC University Muskan Kumawat interacted with Ms Singh, founder of Geeli Mitti farms. Geeli Mitti Farms is a start up based in Nainital. It is into constructing mud houses and training women in self-defence and the construction of mud houses. Ms. Singh wanted to lead a sustainable life, and a part of that meant also being able to build with available local natural material, also being able to be self-reliant. Today, we learn from many things. So many people do not even know the basic skills of life, and Ms Singh believes that

we should go ahead and learn a lot of things science and technology but also should learn very basic skills. One should start from the beginning rather than directly reaching for the end as building blocks one by one makes for a strong foundation. She said, “You need to be able to learn how to survive, help and promote the community and you can help all the creatures on this earth as well as the environment that is one way to live”. People say do something that you are remembered by and not disgraced with. Ttogether we can save as well as build a better environ-

ment. If you look closely at what she is trying to say you will see a beautiful message “You are born in mitti and will die in the

same because nature always operates in a cycle.” Mud acts as a material and is more than just a material; mud is life, full of microorganisms and energy. We all are made up of the same matter. Technically, when mud (mitti) is wet, it is mouldable, playable, it can be shaped into anything, you can create miracles out of it. “Geeli Mitti for me is the smell of fresh monsoon rain. I remember this feeling since childhood it makes me feel alive”, she added. When learning something new there are a lot of surprises along the way, some might say that they are barriers and move away to something new but instead of that push

through break the barrier and make it possible. People generally want assurance of success without trying anything, but the fact being nothing happens without a push in the desired direction. She concluded the interview with the plans related to the future of Geeli mitti farm saying “I have a lot of projects in mind all depending on where and in which community we move to help next. Some wise words from Shagun Singh “Change is primarily revolving around generating environment-friendly livelihood opportunities while preserving local culture and heritage.”

Daughter is not a curse

Why Haryana once named its daughters Bhateri and Bharpai? Palak Bansal Jaipur: “What is in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet”, wrote Shakespeare in his classic love story Romeo and Juliet. A lot if you look at Haryana of the yore. The state once named its daughters Bhateri (enough), Bharpai (Compensate for her), Kaafi (enough), Maafi (apology), and Badho (too much). Through these names, the parents in the state conveyed a message to the creator that they did not want girls. A girl would be named

Bharpai or Bhateri if she was born after three-four girls and the first name was a plea to God to compensate for the girls with a boy. Bhateri also meant some-

thing similar though in different words. So did Kaafi and Badho. Maafi was the parents’ way of apologizing to the God and ask for a son. No wonder, the state had one of the worst male-female ratio in the country. In Mewat, inarguably the mostbackward district of Haryana, the situation was even worse with large number of people married to ‘Paros’. But over the years, the state has tried to improve the male-female ratio. In 2019, the state had 923:1000 sex ratio at birth (SRB) which went down to 922:1000 last year.

How MCGM controlled the the pandemic and became a shining example in the country Kanan Agarwal Jaipur: Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai fought a great battle against Covid - 19 in the financial capital of the country. So much so that Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the Mumbai Model in one of his Radio talks ‘Man ki Baat’. The MCGM implemented Mumbai Model with positive results across the city in May when the megalopolis was suddenly saddled with large number of infected people. Under the model, the Municipal Corporation launched Chase the Virus policy, decen-

tralised hospital bed management, introduced a single platform based ambulance service,

set up jumbo dedicated Covid-19 health centes (DCHCs) and dedicated Covid-19 hospitals

(DCHs), pursued an aggressive testing policy, and introduced an efficient oxygen management system. Chase the Virus Policy involved involved tracing and tracking of high risk contacts and ultimately brought down the doubling rate from 8.2 on May 10 to 433 on June1. The corporation set up 24x7 war rooms in hospitals where the doctors called the patients to give them information about the results of their tests and counseling. Charges of the private hospitals were fixed by the MCGM. Ambulance services were put

on Uber platform and even mini buses of BEST (Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport) were converted into ambulances. Mumbai became the first city in India to successfully build and operationalise Jumbo Field DCHCs/DCHs. Walk-In-Facilities were given to patients who rushed to these hospitals gasping for breath. 1000 beds were earmarked for those people coming under Walk-In Facilities to these Jumbo Field Hospitals. Under the model, the Corporation increased the ICU beds for Covid patients on a war footing.

Remembering Amrish Puri on his 89th Birth Anniversary

Richa Nigam

Tonk: A man who was known internationally for his scary image was none other than everyone’s favorite ‘Mogambo’ aka Amrish Puri. The actor debuted in the world of cinema at the age of 40. However, his legendary acting gave a whole new look to villainy in Bollywood. There was a time when no Hindi film was complete without his presence; even in the minor roles this actor’s versatility was seen. Puri was well known for his mastery in the art of changing his get-ups according to his roles to bring more life to those characters be it DDLJ’s Bauji or Mr. India’s Mogambo. Born in Punjab in 1932, Puri belonged to a family of artists,

and followed the footsteps of his older brother Madan Puri. He acted in about 350 films and was known as the most successful villain of the cinema industry. But there was a time when Puri almost left Bollywood without bothering the box office scorers.

However, he eventually started working in the theatre and won Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1979 and before that in 1971, he acted in Reshma Aur Shera and also landed roles in Shyam Benegal’s feature films Nishant, Manthan and Bhumika. From art cinema, Puri then landed in the commercial cinema in 1981 in Boney Kapoor's Hum Paanch. Moreover, Puri tried to balance art films and theatre, for most of the 1980s and the early 1990s, Amrish played the black sheep in countless mainstream Hindi films. The actor also left his mark of versatility in international cinema after he played small roles in Richard Attenborough's Gandhi, and Steven Spielberg's Indiana Jones, and the Temple of Doom.

Natural resource and encourages action to preserve it Payal Singh Tak Ajmer: June 22 is World Rainforest Day, which is a “collaborative effort to raise awareness and encourage action to protect the world’s rainforests. Of the earth’s ecosystems, rainforests support the largest variety of plants and animal species, house the majority of indigenous groups still living in isolation from the rest of humanity and power the mightiest rivers. Rainforests lock up vast amounts of carbon, moderate local temperature, and influence rainfall and weather patterns at regional and planetary scales. The Rainforest Partnership has been spreading this optimistic message since 2007 when it launched to help protect biodiversity, In-

digenous Peoples, and combat the effects of climate change. Simple ways you can help save rainforests: 1.Volunteer your time or donate to groups working to protect forests 2.Become informed about the
