Jaipur. Folks with childish minds keep laying down laws for what is ‘dharma’ and the true path and what is holy or unholy, says Matsyendranath (the guru of Gorakhnath who laid the foundations for the Nath sect in North India). One doesn’t know, if his present-day follower, the newly incumbent chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, Adityanath, would agree, but according to Guru Matsyendranath, to gain true knowledge is to rise above various small rules and definitions propagated in the name of dharma. The present-day political dispensation, blinded as it is by its politicised vision of things, including vegetarianism, would do well to look towards the true Indian culture and one that they are unable to absorb. The great scholar Hazari Prasad Dwivedi, once used a wonderful term from the ‘Shakta Tantra’ for a true understanding of history. He called it ‘shav sadhana’, a term used by a tantrik sadhaka to explain to him that to gain true knowledge (siddhi), one needs to find and straddle a dead body at a masan (cremation ground, a spot where all lives have been reduced to ash) and then meditate, shutting out everything around him. It is a long process during which forces try their best to distract the seeker with half-truths, but if he can remain detached and focused, at

some point the head of the corpse will turn completely around and as it faces the constant ‘sadhaka’, address and explain the greatest wisdom, setting all his queries at rest. History of meat-eating: There is enough historical evidence by now that Indians since the days of the Indus Valley have indulged in dishes made with meat and poultry: zebu cattle (humped cattle), gaur (Indian bison), sheep, goat, turtle, ghariyal (a crocodile-like reptile), fish fowl and game. The Vedas refer to more than 250 animals of whom about 50 were deemed fit to be sacrificed and, by inference, for eating. The marketplace had various stalls for vendors of different kinds of meat: gogataka (cattle), arabika (sheep), shookarika (swine), nagarika (deer) and shakuntika (fowl). There were even separate vends for selling alligator and tortoise meat (giddabuddaka). The Rigveda describes horses, buffaloes, rams and goats as sacrificial animals. The 162nd hymn of the Rigveda describes the elaborate horse sacrifice performed by emperors. Different Vedic gods are said to have different preferences for animal meat. Thus Agni likes bulls and barren cows, Rudra likes red cows, Vishnu prefers a dwarf ox, while Indra likes a bull with droopy

horns with a mark on its head, and Pushan a black cow. The Brahmanas that were compiled later specify that for special guests, a fattened ox or goat must be sacrificed. The Taittireeya Upanishad praises the sacrifice of a hundred bulls by the sage Agasthya. And the grammarian Panini even coined a new adjective, goghna (killing of a cow), for the guests to be thus honoured.

ton, pork, chicken and peacock meat and cloves, caraway seeds and masur dal also being added to various dishes. The Mahabharata has references to rice cooked with minced meat (pistaudana) and picnics where various kinds of roasted game and game birds were served. Buffalo meat was fried in ghee with rock salt, fruit juices, powdered black pepper, asafetida (hingu) and caraway seeds, and served garnished with radishes, pomegranate seeds and lemons Then come the Buddhist Jatakas and Brahtsamhita (6th Century CE) that maintain the list of non-vegetarian food items, adding some more species. All in all, meat till then appears to have been deemed a nourishing food. eating meat and fish are rare. In the earliest writings on food dating back to 300 CE, pepper (kari) is described as the main spice for flavouring meat. Fried meat had three names and meat boiled with tamarind and pepper was called pulingari. It was occasionally ground to make a sort of pasty relish. Kapilar, the famous Brahmin priest of the Sangam age, speaks with a certain relish of consuming meat and liquor. Old Tamil has four terms for beef: valluram, shushiyam, shuttiraichi and padithiram. There were 15 names for pork, a special favourite, we learn, among the wives of traders in the coastal region. There are also references to wild boar, rabbits and deer being hunted with hunting dogs. Captured boars were fattened with rice flour and kept away from the female to make their flesh tastier. Among more exotic meats were porcupines (a favourite of the Kuruvars) and fried snails (favoured by the Mallars). Down south, there was also no taboo on eating domestic fowl (kozhi). Fish and prawns were greatly relished all along the coastal region, so much so that the word for fish, meen, also entered the lexicon of Sanskrit as the north learnt to relish this fruit of the seas.

Interview Agriculture Engieering Faculty Member gives a new perspective to mundane advancements Aditya Pareek A new perspective on Agriculture and Animal Husbandry came to light when Aditya Pareek had a brief Tetea-Tete with Dr. S.S. Yadav,Professor Agriculture at JECRC University. Dr. Yadav did his B.Tech in Agricultural Engineering from Allahabad Agriculture Institute, then Pursued his M.Tech and PhD from IIT Khadagpur, he has worked as a scientist for The Government of India for the majority of his career and since retirement he has taken to teaching. Aditya: Since You’ve spent a huge chunk of your formative years at an IIT how do you think the academic environment there holds up to the almost revered in superiority complex that most people have for these apex institutions? S.S.Yadav: Oh they live upto it in the fullest, Teachers don’t exactly have to break a sweat for the children are mostly screened

by the high barrier of entry so that only the people with the most inclination and initiative for the scientific inquisitiveness ever sit in those classrooms. Aditya: Sir do you think It is Right to debate GMO(Genetically Modified) verities of seeds and should the voices of those who seek to ban them be louder in the discourse? S.S.Yadav: Everybody’s Opinion should be given an equal consideration, only factor being what merit does the argument actually hold, expression itself is everyone’s right, how large the following again depends on the Merit and Substance of the Idea/Side of the Argument is being propagated. GMO is a boon to the starving world, we could increase the Agricultural Production from the same level of cultivated land virtually manyfold, feeding the destitute in the process which should be the only priority everything else is posturing, we must attend to the fundamental of subsistence that is hunger. Aditya: sir I recently came across a strange signboard on a highway, it said “goat board” I later deduced that it was

a division of the animal husbandry establishments funded by government, do you think decentralising the research and policy framework into specifics has yielded more result? S.S.Yadav: oh yes in such a diverse terrain as India it is not counterproductive to devise different research and policy, in the USA they grow corn because it is suitable to their climate conditions across the states but ours is a very different pickle altogether. The fact that we have for the most part achieved self reliance on grain production is testament that a heterogeneous policy is the way to go. Aditya: in a world where the government is rapidly doing away with Public Sector Undertakings do you see GMO rollout in India under the reigns of private sector? S.S.Yadav: the private sector already has its finger in the pie, plenty corporate funded research has been done for developing premium varieties of grain, say wheat with a higher than usual portion .content which then goes into the mass produced wheat products proprieted by said corporate entity.

It would be natural to use the extra Sunday factor for whichever attack was more important or needed surprise more. The only attack in the Eastern Pacific that would have been more important than starting a war with Britain would have been an attack on the US. Other possible targets were weakly defended; it would have made more sense to attack them on Saturday so as to save the Sunday factor for the Malay Peninsula. The target did not have to be Pearl Harbor, but that was one of the most likely places. Of the major US military bases in the Eastern Pacific, Pearl Harbor was closest to Japan and most vulnerable. None of this was proof, but it could have focused suspicion on the next morning.

In the 1980s Dr. Richard Stallman(RMS) was in the IEEE committee that wrote the standard that ultimately became known as POSIX. The committee set itself the task of standardizing interface specs for a Unix-like system, but had no short name for its work. When the first part of the specification was ready, someone gave it the name “IEEEIX”, with a subtitle that included “Portable Operating System” perhaps “Specifications for a Portable Operating System”.It seemed to RMS that nobody would ever say “IEEEIX”, since the pronunciation would sound like a shriek of terror; rather, everyone would call it “Unix”. That would have boosted AT&T, the GNU Project’s rival, an outcome RMS did not want, so he looked for another name, but nothing natural came to him.So RMS put the initials of “Portable Operating System” together with the same suffix “ix”, and came up with “POSIX”. It sounded good and there was no reason not to use it, so RMS suggested it. Although it was just barely in time, the committee adopted it.The administrators of the committee were as relieved as RMS was to give the standard a pronounceable name.

Gujarat to be made a water hand pumps free-state

Falguni Shrivstava

Gujrat CM Vijay Rupani

Jaipur. Gujarat ,Chief Minister Vijay Rupani today said his government will free the state of hand water pumps by supplying safe and adequate drinking water to people. “The state has already become tanker-free and our aim is to get rid of hand water pumps. Earlier, water tankers were used for supplying safe drinking water to the people in the

state. Now, we will ensure that people in the state get safe and adequate drinking water,” Mr Rupani said. “During its rule in the state, Congress did not do anything for supply of pure drinking water to people, particularly in the tribal areas,” he alleged. He was speaking after laying foundation stone for various development works worth Rs. 309 crore at Dediapada tribal town in Narmada district about 100 km from Vadodara. The projects include supply of pure drinking water to tribal areas and construction of water tanks. “People in Narmada district, which is surrounded by hills, have been experiencing difficulties in getting pure drinking water despite heavy rainfall in the region and that is why we launched drinking water projects

here today,” Mr Rupani said. This service will be especially used for tribals living in remote villages. On the occasion, Mr Rupani also announced that his government would reach the target of opening 500 generic stores in the state by the end of May. He said the state government had already opened 250 ‘Deendayal Generic Medicine Stores’ in the state so far. “Medicines sold in these stores are 30 to 80 per cent cheaper than those being sold in the market. Life-saving medicines being sold from each of these stores give a huge relief to poor and middle class citizens,” he said. He also informed that construction workers in Gujarat would start getting packed meal at Rs. 10 from May.

A trip of paranoia : The Men are growing paranoia on the underside of their covers , i often catch the navy corpsman humming the hymn of the corps. The thing with joint operations is they often beget envy among the wings of the military peers.Military life is mostly about co-operation , take the ancient Greeks or the current patrol party’s misadventures in Ho-chimin , of which yours truly has been a part ever since his enlistment in the 2nd reconnaissance battalion of the first marines . I was recruited from a war time draft stint , as luck would have it they landed me into the USMC , the wing with the most casualties per mission of the whole conflict. I never chose to be a marine , i was inflicted with that burden , being the county idiot , nobody back home expected i’d actually be shipped off to ‘Nam with even the Army , let alone become a Marine Officer and serve in the campaigning Recon. battalion in the heart of the enemy territory. It is not as much heroics here as the newspapers back home make it to be , often i’ve seen lads with soiled pants and piss drenched bootlegs. By the time , i am writing this , the scandalous nature of the American Military’s involvement with the trade of intoxicating substances , prostitution and gambling rackets in the land of Vietnam is cold soup being licked by the hobo runts of the print and electronic media hounds . We were stationed here to fight a war against the evil communist powers of the eastern world , The NVA and other insurgent groups bullying the freedom of trade and

other liberties in this country of rich yet rustic rice-grain cultivators The peers have taken to calling them “Gooks” or “zipper-heads” , however discussion on such puny trivia isn’t the purpose of this note . The conditions here are not humane enough to setup an HQ for our squad , it rains too much and the bug bites never cease . pushing ourselves we do our jobs and pray to live another day every second of our existence , not a day goes by that i lose a degree of lucidity and sound superficial judgment . My superior Officers remind me at each pep-talk how we are ensuring freedom for future generations of Americans , that our suffering and sacrifices will ensure their survival and prosperity , each splashing step in the quicksand here is a giggle in the nursery there , for years to come , how every suture wound on this battlefield , a grin on a li’l child’s face over at the land of the free. I do not jest often but the situations do call for it , or so we’ve learned to tune our sense of humor for . It is awfully bright today , brighter than the 4th of july back home . Prologue : In the final days of the Vietnam conflict , the US military withdrew its troops leaving behind a few , unwilling to return home , those who weren’t attracted by the life of a veteran hated by his own country and instead chose a life of drug running and civil unrest , doing for the rest of their lives what they spent their prime years doing . These young men drafted as adolescents , were now adults , who preferred the life of leopards among the leeches , they didn’t choose , “They Were Drafted” here .

Renowned painter Jamini Roy, whose paintings are not only critically admired but also something of a staple in Bengali middle class homes. Through reproductions and prints if not the original – was known for moving away from Western styles towards more Indian influences.

On Tuesday, Google celebrated his 130th birth anniversary with a doodle inspired by his painting titled Black Horse. Roy, who was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1955, was born in 1887 in the Beliatore village of the Bankura district, West Bengal. The documentary above, made in 1989 by Debabrata Roy, and produced by Films’ Division, visits the legendary painter’s hometown to chart his stylistic influences.
