JU Speaks on Casteism

Caste: Is it a big issue for Youngsters?

JU youngsters and faculties were interacted on the issue of Casteism

Rani Joshi

Casteism is a big question for Indian society. We critice it, but marry in our own caste. We criticise it, but we oppose ‘Caste based resevation’. Its having a long debate, some of them accept this, but some of them claims of being not part of this. So keeping this issue in mind, our newspaper ‘The Message’ is publishing its special edition on the issue of ‘Casteism’. We asked JU Youth as well as JU Faculty about ‘Question of casteism still exists on the basis of ‘Roti and Beti’ this issue. The views are as following;

Honor killing

I think, the Caste system is still prevalent, if we talk about the rural areas. In fact, in some top schools, people are not given admission, just because of their castes. Casteism causes problems in private jobs and social lives. There’s a difference in Casteism in urban and rural areas. In rural areas, the ‘upper’ castes are given lesser weightage whereas the scenario in urban areas is somewhat opposite. Even if we talk about marriages, caste does play a role. These ‘lower’ castes still have not been able to attain the same position as the ‘higher’ castes, that’s why there’s still caste based reservation. Dr. Sachin Gupta, Associate Professor, School of Management There’s still definitely a caste-system prevalent in India. It’s comparatively lesser in urban areas. If we talk about caste and class, from as much

as I have seen around me, if someone has a high social status, I am.not taking any name specifically, but there are government officials who are from the reserved category, but they get the same amount of respect, reason being their high social status. Dr. Shivani Singh, Assistant Professor, School of Management According to me, the caste system is pretty much still prevalent in our society. But if we compare urban with rural, it is definitely more prevalent in rural areas in every context. Whether it is daily Social life, Inter-caste marriages or jobs. Rimjhim Sharma, BA JMC, II Semester According to me, the caste system is still there. It’s history goes long back. People refer to get rid of caste system, according to me, its more like it is difficult, not impossible.Comparatively, rural areas definite-

Jaipur. ‘Honor killing’ a type of homicide, a murder by own family members of the victim, belief that the victim member has brought the shame upon the family and on their society. ‘Honor killing’ is a global phenomena and it has been widely reported in so many countries like in Egypt, Bangladesh, Pakistan and India etc. Historically, there is an established casteist mind set of the people of upper castes, to not allow their daughter or son to marry out of their caste. If they marry with their own choice, family members can kill their own daughters and sons. As far as Gendered approach in the phenomenon is concerned, Society considers their daughters as ‘Izzat’

of their family and society, therefore their patriarch notions get offended, when their kids get married out o the caste by their own choice. Basi-

cally Honor killing is a very stupid idea adopted by our society, but now a days it has been increasing in so many countries. India is one of those countries, where there are so many people come under the pressure of

society and it leads to homicide specially of the girls. In India, Honor killing is an old phenomenon in some states like Rajasthan, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana, we can see these type of incident most frequently. It is estimated that approximately 1000 peoples including both male and female are killed every year in India. But what should we have to take to stop Honor killing. It’s a question of choice. We should have to educate the people there should be a strict law by the government to stop the homicide. In the constitution and legislative provision in India, honor killing is also violation of articles 14, 15 (1),(3) etc. Honor killing is also considered as a brutal crime of homicide under the IPC.

ly has more serious problems. For example, if we talk about jobs in urban areas, people of every caste work under a roof, whereas in rural areas the ‘lower’ castes still work under the ‘upper’ castes. And the people who think there’s no caste system in India, they are wrong, just think about tragic end of inter-caste marriages due to honor killings. Mohitinder Singh Maan, BA JMC, II Semester According to me, it happens in cities also but to some less extent and the ways are different, inter caste marriages are happening, but at very low rates, most of the inter caste marriages happens between upper caste with another upper caste, not in just some part but in most of India. Arshin Sharma, B.Tech (CS), II Semester From my views, caste based reservation resulting as discrimination in india, creating a

neo-castesim. By it, i feel very bad and hopeless. About reservation, this should have been on based of class, not caste based. I don’t understand why people don’t react and government system don’t understand this. Shubham Dixit B.Tech C.S.E II Semester I don’t believe in this caste system. As a teacher, I think, education should be given to all, equally. I don’t like this partial behavior for students. According to me, teachers as well as students do not get affected by this. Just like Dronacharya taught both Eklavya and Arjun equally without judging their castes but their talent. We should also do the same for development of our society. Dr. Sanyay K. Sharma, HOD, Department of Chemistry

EMS Namboodiri stood against Casteism In 1909 in Kerala, EMS Namboodiripad was born into a upper-caste, landlord family of Namboodiri brahmins. At a very young age he began reacting to the environment in which he lived -- the caste-ridden Kerala society and began advocat-

ing social reforms. Very soon he was drawn into the national liberation struggle as a young student. He was able to see that the oppressive social order was being protected by the British imperialists and their stooges the local princes. This was the period when Gandhi had already emerged on the national scene.

Why Reservation on the basis of the Caste? Sadiq Khan

Young India divided, some declare it as ‘Anti caste’, some call it, ‘Casteist’ policy Jaipur. The topic of reservation in educational institutions has now been with us for years. Caste-based reservation, while it has a huge number of supporters, it has its critics as well. Caste-based reservation is a reservation based on backward status of some castes. Particularly, castes which come under Scheduled Tribe (ST), Scheduled Caste (SC) and Other Backward Class (OBC) category get reservation in institutions. It was basically put into practice to give the ‘lower’

castes the same opportunities as the ‘upper’ castes. Its history goes back to the mid 20th century. But that is not this article is about, rather it talks about the scenario we have in our time. People have complained against caste-based reservation, stating that the ‘lower’ castes are now capable enough that they don’t need reservation. Sure, there are examples like that. We have seen protests against it. Such as the 2006 anti-reservation protests in which thousands of AIIMS

students and doctors came out against it. But like every other coin, this also has its other side. While we have examples that show the ‘lower’ castes capable, there are many examples that states otherwise as well. A recent example was Rohith Vemula, a Ph.D scholar of Hyderabad Central University who was found dead on 17 January 2016, hanging from a ceiling fan in the New Research Scholars’ hostel on the university campus. This raises a question, ‘Is

casteist mentality still exist in educational institutions?’ As educational institutions are also part of our Society, It can be refelected there. But, As a welfare state and secular nation, it’s our responsibility to create an environment of equality for every student, belong to any caste. Vemula, along with 4 other students were detained from their hostel rooms a letter from the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) was received from the university, which was

first written to the MHRD by Union Minister of Labour and Employment, Bandaru Dattatreya, alleging that the campus is used by ‘anti-national’ and ‘casteist’ elements. There are many examples that support and oppose the castebased reservation policy. But if we put them on a weighing scale, which side weighs more can’t define the justice. The big question is, ‘Caste came first or Caste-based Reservation?’ So, which one must be erased first?
