Editorial

Eisenhower, NATO and the supreme allied miser of all Europe Aditya Pareek

History is witness, how the stra-

tegic genius of Gen. Dwight .D. Eisenhower defeated the Formidable German Third Reich’s Prussian enforced War Machine and contained the evil of fascism which was arguably the single most ambitious totalitarian attempt at world domination outside of the Soviet Union’s shenanigans during the height of the cold war. Eisenhower after hanging up his uniform with the five star shoulder boards of a United states Army General ,later as President of the United States lead America and the west into an era where Explosively Violent Confrontation(perhaps even nuclear) with the USSR seemed an eventuality. The Downing of a U-2 Spy Aircraft piloted by Francis Garry Powers became the center of a controversy that cost President Eisenhower the status of being Commander in Chief of The US Armed Forces and the de-facto leadership of “The Free World”. Eisenhower’s insistence on supporting at any cost the Grand

Alliance of European Nations outside the Iron Curtain to the East ,against an inevitable bunch of adversaries which were lorded over by the Authoritarian Communist superpower and rival The Soviet Union, earned him the reverence of many. These Historical policies Stand in stark contrast to Current US President Donald. J. Trump’s unsubstantiated recent remark after a meeting with Chancellor Angela Merkel ,that Germany (which is arguably the linchpin to European Balance of Power since even before “The Great War”) “Owes NATO Vast Sums”. President Trump has been known to stir the pot with his bombastic

“isolationist” rhetoric since the election campaign. Arguably The West Prevailed over the Soviet Tyranny and expansionist schemes only in the shadow of Men like Gen. Eisenhower and Ronald Regan who poured more into the development of free enterprise and uplifting the standard of living of their subjects right alongside the technological edge in mili-

tary hardware. Today when the world is a unipolar stage where only one power(USA) can claim absolute Hegemony over the globe, the severe lack of action outside of proxy wars and wars on an ideology(Terror!) has become cause for concern for the military Industrial Complex that accounts for a major slice of the bloated US Economy. The Problem with Big Business that has already penetrated virtually all markets in the world is well, the inherent nature of profit fueled policy agenda that is at its core. In short ,constant unrelenting war in the Arab world is good for all but is that enough? After all a profitable business enterprise and its dependents measure success only

in terms of ever growing dividends and revenue. A push towards a second coldwar after a few stagnant decades of adventureism in the desert seems like the perfect recipe for justifying the backbreaking parallel expenses that would become the norm if the west were to worry about a Russian threat to their new NATO allies which just so happen to be The Russian Federation’s Neighbors and Former Soviet States thus in a position to encircle it. Donald Trump’s Campaign Promise to make sure every NATO signatory pays their “fare” share of defense spending equivalent to 2% of their respective GDPs is finally materializing even if in just flamboyant bursts during the President’s speeches bent on disciplining the European states who according to him have taken American guarantees to their National Securities for granted. In the current US Administration’s case common sense would dictate that a populist is as good as his word.
