We Need A Very Special Person!

t’s been an amazing 2 1/2 years at The Hub and we’re now expanding into a whole new community with the launch of our second magazine. To do this we need someone very special with the following qualities; very outgoing, really enjoys interacting with local businesses, organizations and people within the community. Let’s face it, a magazine can never be successful without revenue so this is first and foremost a sales & marketing position but there’s so much more as well. We’re not looking for former editors, writers or photographers; we’re looking for someone who wants to use their Sales & Marketing experience to help our advertising partners grow

their business. You need to be able to think outside the box and help us to bring fresh ideas to an industry that hasn’t really changed in 50 years. True sales professionals know that the only way to make real money is to get a piece of the action and that’s exactly what we’re offering. So if you possess the drive and enthusiasm to be successful and you think that you’re the special person we’re looking for then send us your resume!

Playing Sunrise-to-Sunset for Alzheimer’s

O

n June 21, the Alpharetta Duplicate Bridge Center participated in a marathon bridge game on behalf of the Alzheimer’s Association and the American Contract Bridge League – the inaugural partner for The Longest Day. The participating teams competed approximately 16 hours playing bridge to raise awareness and funds for the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer’s Association. Over 135 bridge players came out from 6 am until 10:30 pm and nearly $5000 was collected for the Alzheimer’s Association. The Longest Day was designed to honor the passion, dedication and strength displayed by people facing Alzheimer’s. In that spirit, many of the 165,000 ACBL members and 3200 bridge clubs decided to “do something they love” and joined the fight against Alzheimer’s on the Longest Day. Some research indicates that playing mentally challenging games such as bridge may potentially keep your brain healthy. Community Rotary Club of North Fulton Announces Dedication of its Rotary Reflection Garden

T

he Rotary Club of North Fulton is pleased to announce the dedication of its ROTARY REFLECTION GARDEN at the City of Alpharetta’s North Park. This project, designed by Richard Owens Environmental Design, is the Club’s third project at North Park. The idea was to create a peaceful and subtle woodland garden in this naturally beautiful, yet underutilized, nook of North Park and provide park visitors an opportunity for exploration, rest, relaxation and reflection. North Park is a fixture of Alpharetta, visited by thousands of guests each year, many of whom are there for sports activities on the many athletic fields and courts offered. The Rotary Club of North Fulton envisioned a quieter, beautiful setting to offer a different type of opportunity. The garden is set behind an existing and already beautiful pond and fountain area and in front of the undisturbed woods. A beautiful rustic Peace Pole will serve as an attractive focal point from the road. It includes multiple benches for relaxation along with a beautiful garden and brick pavers. The community had and will

continue to have an opportunity to be involved in the garden by purchasing engraved brick pavers with inspirational and appropriate sayings and/ or family names via The Rotary Club of North Fulton’s website, www.northfultonrotary.org. With more than 1.2 million members in 33,000 clubs worldwide, Rotary club members are volunteers who work locally, regionally and internationally to combat hunger, improve health and sanitation, provide education and job training, promote peace and eradicate polio under the motto “Service Above Self.” For more information about the Rotary Reflection Garden or to purchase an engraved brick, visit www.northfultonrotary.org, or call Steve Siders at 770-992-4444.

I AM PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN!

P

ATRIOTISM…..what does that mean to you and how have you fostered patriotism in your home? What type of patriotic role model are you for your children?

We should not worry so much about political affiliation when it comes to love of country. We need to get back to a default understanding that everyone loves, supports, and is willing to sacrifice for their country as in years ago... that “tingly” feeling at a baseball game when you stood up to sing the National Anthem? For children, here are some ideas that will get them started or further develop their patriotism: ~Take your child with you when you vote. The “secrecy” and the “adult only” status of voting are very alluring to young children. Making them part of this “insider” activity will make them look forward to the day when they can actually vote. ~Promote citizenship within your neighborhood, school, and community with your child by participating in any activity within these organizations that shows your child that YOU are a good citizen. Assisting in any service-oriented event in your child’s school or in the community lets your child know that you are willing to step outside your home to help others and support the overall good.

8

thehubga.com

~If possible, choose a school environment that promotes patriotism. Again, when I was a child the school day started with the Pledge of Allegiance-that was a given and this is something that I uphold even today in my preschool. However, reciting the Pledge is now a point of political argument. I want to ask, “Are you kidding?” Children love poems and they love songs. Teach them the Pledge of Allegiance, teach them and sing together the National Anthem, My Country ‘tis of Thee, This Land is Your Land, and so many others. As we know about brain patterning in the youngest of children, the sooner this starts the stronger it becomes a “part of them” and something that the brain will constantly recall cognitively and emotionally... that “tingly” feeling! If you have not yet started a “campaign” of patriotism with your child, now is the perfect time to start!

Family A Family Reborn: Freedom from Addiction

I

t has been said that, during an intervention, the addict is the healthiest person in the room. Surprisingly, there is some truth to this notion. Addiction is a family disease that impacts everyone in the family unit. In an effort to withstand the intense emotional environment in which they live, family members develop unhealthy coping mechanisms. Secret keeping, denial, enabling, rescuing and controlling are examples of how loved ones form their own codependent behaviors.

“My husband and I once looked forward to our later years, when the kids were grown with families of their own. Instead, our son’s drug and alcohol addiction robbed us of the joy we anticipated in retirement. Our lives became his addiction,” says Milton resident Marcia Townsend*. Like so many families affected by chemical dependency, the Townsends were overwhelmed with feelings of guilt, shame, betrayal, failure, embarrassment and deep sorrow. “We were in the throes of addiction with no hope of breaking free,” notes Townsend. “We lost so much – our friendships, our financial security, our self-worth and, most importantly, our son…he was a shell of the person we once knew.” After learning about a drug and alcohol treatment center in Doraville from a family friend, the Townsends called the facility and enrolled their son in the 90-day program without delay. Through its Family Recovery Program, including support groups, counseling and family workshops, they learned how their behaviors impact their son’s addiction. Six months later, the Townsend family finally feels a sense of freedom. “The entire family, not just our son, is in recovery. And we couldn’t be happier,” Townsend says with a smile. Schools Chattahoochee Student Receives Scholarship

F

rom a very young age, Nikki Kariminia has been focused on her dream of becoming a nurse and helping others. Significant hearing loss has not deterred her ambition, nor have family financial problems, nor has moving from Iran to America stopped her from a life of school achievement and community service. Nikki learned this week that she is much closer to her goal as winner of the $5,000 John T. Wheeler Memorial Scholarship presented by Quota International of Northside Atlanta, a service organization that aids deaf and hard of hearing children and youth in Georgia. Nikki will receive the award based on her personal essay, school and volunteer community service record as a student at Chattahoochee High School, and recommendations from school officials. Nikki will use the scholarship to study at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston for a BS in Nursing. As the daughter of Narjes and Seyed Kariminia, she moved to the US from Iran in 2000. She has been active in karate and gymnastics, loves science, and volunteered for the local Red Cross and Fulton County Library, where she was Best Volunteer of the Year for 4 years. Born with moderately severe bilateral hearing impairment, Nikki has never let her disability get in the way of her life and accomplishments. She wants to be a person that makes an impact on society and wants to help others.

Disciplined Strong Driven

Make Your Extracurricular Activities Count

W

hen choosing extracurricular activities, it’s easy for high school students to get caught up in what will look good on college applications, what other people will think is cool and what our parents want. In the past, I let myself fall into this pattern and wasted large amounts of my precious childhood on things that I didn’t enjoy. What people tend to forget about high school is that even though our goal at this stage is to prepare for the future, that can and should be done without comprising our happiness now. The best way to find success is to find something that you’re truly passionate about. For me, this has been Model United Nations, an organization where students play the role of diplomats from the United Nations to build consensus on real world problems based on the views of the countries that they represent. To me, Model UN is valuable because I have been able to come to a better understanding of the world around me.

We Shape Bodies. It’s What We Do.

One day, my generation will be charged with solving humanitarian, environmental, and economic crises, and because of Model UN, we’re more aware and more prepared. This year I was on the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees for my two biggest Model UN conferences, and I’ve already been able to apply the knowledge I learned by interacting with refugees in the Atlanta community. However, if someone else was to try Model UN and not find the same passion I have, I’d recommend that they go try something new. No matter what you’re passionate about, pursue that. Don’t waste your energy on anything you don’t really believe in.

Schools Holcomb Bridge Middle School Wins Top Honors at International Model UN Conference in New York

T

wenty 8th grade students from Holcomb Bridge Middle School participated in the Global Classroom’s International Middle School Model UN Conference in New York City in mid April, attended by a total of 1,500 middle school students from around the world. The HBMS student “partnership” made up of Karla Chavez and Mason Gay earned the highest award of “best delegation” for their role representing Indonesia in the Committee on UN Women. Only 12 such awards were granted at the conference and Karla and Mason were selected out of 80 competing partnerships in their Committee. The students were accompanied to New York by HBMS Assistant Principal Matt Vance and teachers Brittany Durkin and Christa Heath. The 20 HBMS students worked the entire year during Learning Lab to prepare for the big event and collectively raised $18,000 to cover the cost of the trip. “I am very proud of these students and our educators who coached and accompanied them,” said Principal Joy Schroerlucke. “This is the 6th year that our school has participated in a Model UN. As a school of global classrooms, it is a perfect fit for us.” HBMS was one of only three schools to attend the event from Georgia, and the only public middle school to attend (private schools Fulton Science Academy and Ron Clarke Academy also attended).

Health & Wellness Restless Leg Syndrome, Sleep, and Aging

A

nti-aging is on everyone’s mind these days. A key factor in keeping a youthful appearance and energy level is getting a good night’s rest. Detailed brain imaging shows that people who do not get a good night’s rest have “older brains” than people who get 7-8 hours of sleep a night. Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS), which impacts one in 10 Americans, may cause severe nightly sleep disruption. RLS impacts health and may accelerate aging in other ways also: • Fatigue is a great excuse not to exercise. Exercise increases oxygen flow to the brain, helps eliminate toxins from the body, and helps maintain muscle mass and bone density.

Additional RLS treatments include: • Leg massages • Hot baths or heating pads/ ice packs applied to the legs • Good sleep habits • Medication (which may be helpful in some, but is not for everyone) • Ultrasound scan of the legs, which can rule out restlessness caused by venous insufficiency

• Lack of sleep increases the level of stress hormones, including cortisol and adrenaline, which impact brain function, increase blood pressure, and reduce the body’s ability to remove cholesterol from the bloodstream. Treatment for RLS is aimed at easing symptoms. For people with mild to moderate RLS, changes in lifestyle may help such as developing a regular exercise program, or eliminating (or decreasing) the use of caffeine, alcohol, and tobacco. Treating an RLS-associated condition also may provide relief of symptoms.

Health & Wellness Protect Yourself From Osteoporosis

O

steoporosis is the condition that causes bones to become less dense, brittle and susceptible to fracture as we age. It affects 10 million Americans, 80 percent of whom are women. Although gradual bone loss over time is normal, rapid bone loss can lead to osteoporosis. The following steps can help you slow down or even stop bone loss before damage occurs.

• Exercise. Doing at least 30 minutes a day of weight-bearing and resistance exercise (such as walking or strength training) can help prevent osteoporosis. • Take your Calcium and Vitamin D. Dietary sources of calcium include low-fat dairy products, collard greens, canned sardines and salmon with bones. Sources of vitamin D include fatty fish such as salmon and tuna; egg yolks; and vitamin D-fortified milk, OJ or cereals. • Limit alcohol and caffeine consumption. Drinking alcohol reduces physical activity, impairs nutrition and has toxic effects on bone cells. Caffeine may interfere calcium absorption. Replace sodas with skim milk or calcium-fortified juice. • Quit smoking. Women who smoke, particularly after menopause, have a significantly greater risk of spine and hip fractures than those who do not smoke. Men who smoke also have lower bone density. The risk for osteoporosis from cigarette smoking appears to diminish after quitting. • Get tested. The only way to diagnose osteoporosis is by having a bone density test, a safe and painless exam that measures bone mineral density. Having one helps your doctor decide whether to start you on a prevention or treatment program.

Our Inner Eeyore

H

e has a house built out of sticks that frequently falls. He’s not very fond of the other animals in the forest. His tail is detachable and is prone to fall off. He lives in a place labeled, “Eeyore’s Gloomy Place: Rather Boggy and Sad.” Eeyore is one low energy donkey who is in great need of some chakra clearing! I have a name for that part of us that wants to hold us back and tell us, “it can’t happen,” “why bother,” “I don’t deserve what I want.” It’s our “Inner Eeyore!” However, Eeyore is the best at playing poohsticks and he can write poems. He has gifts, he’s just not very good at seizing the day and living in the moment like Tigger! He gets stuck in the past and predicts the future in woeful ways. Thank goodness he has some good friends around him that love him and attach his tail when it falls off. So, how is your inner Eeyore holding you back, or allowing fear to overcome you and paralyze you moving forward? Embracing this part of us instead of rejecting it or criticizing it is the key to finding our way forward. We can combine this part with our inner Tigger that wants us to bounce forward. If our stripes fall off, we can always paint them back on. Support, guide, love and encourage that part of you that is afraid to step into your own power and gifts. Shine brightly and carry on!

Money Matters When Should You Lease vs. Buy a Car?

I

’ve recently revisited the buy versus lease debate. I turned to a friend – Adam Goldfein, host of his own show on News/Talk WSB radio. Adam is one of the smartest guys on the planet when it comes to cars. Adam says leasing is likely the best option if you meet the following criteria: 1. You have good credit. If your credit score is far south of 700, you likely won’t be able to get a lease – or at least a good deal on one. They’ll generally lease only to people with solid credit scores. They figure these people are likeliest to take “good care” of the car. 2. You drive fewer than 15,000 miles a year. This is not always easy to do in the Atlanta area. If you live north of Atlanta and commute into Buckhead every day, you could easily rack up 25,000 miles in just one year.

3. Your motto is “out with the old, in with the new.” If you like to change cars every three to four years, then leasing may be for you. Leasing is much less expensive than buying a new car, driving it for three years and then trading it in and buying a new one. If you are the kind of person who likes one car for the long run, you’re better off buying. The best way to evaluate a lease is to calculate the “monthly cost per $10,000,” which should be below $150. Really “good deals” are lower than $130 per $10,000. You should be able to do this exact same calculation on any vehicle you would consider leasing. Happy motoring this summer!

10 Reasons The Galaxy S4 Is Awesome

H

ere are the top ten reasons why I chose the new Samsung Galaxy S4 (Android OS) over the familiar iPhone 5 (iOS):

1. Speed: The 1.9 GHz quad-core processor is fast, yet efficient. This processor is built for multi-tasking, and features a power saving mode that conserves battery when you need it most. 2. Multi-tasking & Sharing Information: Email, calendar, contacts, news, weather, sports and social media applications are a normal set of separate applications I routinely shuffle through. I can share information from one application to another or copy and paste from one to another. The iPhone is extremely limited in this respect. Only Apple approved applications (which you can practically count on one hand) have the aforementioned capabilities. 3. Information at a Glance: The S4 allows you to setup things called widgets, which display data or information fed to you via your favorite applications. My home screen is customized (easy to do) to show my last 10 emails, today’s appointments, news, weather, sports and social media channels. My old iPhone required me to open several applications (one at a time, remember, an iPhone can’t multi-task) to view the same information. 4. Navigation: Google Maps is far superior to the Apple Maps product. Although you can get Google maps on iPhone, it is no longer integrated into the iOS core, therefore everything defaults to the buggy Apple Maps. This means you cannot fully leverage the Google maps functionality, including Google Now (Google’s more advanced answer to SiRi).

5. Google Now: Basically, “Google Now” is SiRi with advanced automation. Google Now remembers what you look up on the internet, places you frequent, and your day-to-day activities. It will then tailor its notifications and alerts around your routine. For Example: It alerts you in enough time to leave for a scheduled appointment at another location while compensating for current traffic conditions. You can even setup location-based alerts. I set up an alert to remind me to pick up milk the next time I entered an Ingles Grocery Store. Amazingly, Google Now dutifully reminded me as I walked through the door! 6. Camera: 13 Megapixel resolution still shot camera with HD video. This is one of the best cameras I have used. Now I rarely break out my Digital SLR or fancy point-and-shoot cameras, since this satisfies my ability to take great quality photos/videos. 7. Voicemails: You cannot forward a voicemail on iPhone and you can on the S4! 8. Larger HD Quality Screen: The screen is phenomenal. You will NOT have any trouble reading the screen no matter how old you are. 9. Picture/Video Projection & Remote Control Most new Smart TV’s are network-connected and a good majority of them include the newest DLNA chipsets technology that the S4 uses. This means you can share those wonderful pictures and videos in HD quality (with one click of a button) when in close proximity to a TV/ Projector featuring the DLNA technology. The S4 comes standard with a universal TV/DVR remote control application called “WatchOn,” which is easy to setup and simple to use. 10. NFC (Near Field Communications): This is the future of secure transfer and sharing. NFC chips will allow you to securely make payments at credit card terminals or transfer data (files/Picture/Videos) near instantly to and from other devices by simply touching them together! Considering the iPhone has not evolved much over the last few years, I was not going to hold my breath but rather chose to move on and I am extremely happy I chose the S4 features over iPhone familiarity.

Food & Wine

Mac and Cheese Italian Style

I

love Italian food which is equal to my love for Italian wine. Most Italian dishes are simple and uncomplicated to make. When at home, my TV is set on the Cooking Channel and I love the shows that teach simple cooking, which is about all I have time for. I especially love the show Extra Virgin: themed Italian cooking centered on the culinary adventures of an Italian American actress and her Tuscan born husband. The two have a great time in the kitchen and make beautiful Italian food for everyday. Here’s one of their mac and cheese recipes which I’ve made for my family. Pair it with a white wine like an Italian Soave.

Penne ai Quattro Formaggi (Mac ‘n’ Cheese) Ingredients Kosher salt 1 cup whole milk 4 ounces gorgonzola, cut into small cubes 4 ounces taleggio, cut into small cubes 2 ounces gruyere, grated 2 ounces Parmesan, grated, plus more for topping 1 pound mezze pasta (short penne) Freshly ground black pepper 1/3 cup plain dried breadcrumbs Directions Adjust the oven rack to the top shelf. Bring a pot of salted water to a boil. Heat the milk in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the cheeses to the hot milk and start melting. With a wooden spoon, stir gently but continuously, until all the cheeses are melted together. Bring a pot of salted water to a boil and cook your pasta according to the directions on the box, and, as always, to make sure you achieve a proper “al dente” texture, drain it about 2 minutes before what is indicated. Toss the penne and the cheese sauce together, season with salt and a generous amount of ground black pepper. Divide the penne between ten 6-ounce ramekins. Top with a light sprinkling of breadcrumbs and a grating of Parmesan.

o-owners Melissa Enlow and Dena Turk opened Lavender Hair Salon and Shoppe in Johns Creek this past April. On June 18th, Mayor Mike Bodker and members of the Johns Creek Chamber of Commerce attended their Grand Opening to officially welcome the stylish salon where you can enjoy the latest in hair design, great conversation and unique boutique gift items. Dena attributes her abilities to years honing the craft, and after twenty years in the business is well prepared for the challenge of owning her own shop. Melissa found her interest in hair styling as a child, much to the dismay of her Barbie dolls and cat, and has grown since to become a master of everything from highlights to texture manipulations to updos.

“Food can only impress if it’s created and served with heart.”

Located on Jones Bridge Road next to Rosa Mia Italian Restaurant, Melissa and Dena’s salon stays true to the physical beauty and devotion valued in its namesake Lavender flower.

t n e m e v o r p m I e The Hub’s Hom Summertime Move

S

ummertime is the busiest season to move, but there are a few tips to help make the move seamless.

1. Do it yourself or full serve. Can you do it alone or should you hire a moving company for a full service or partial move? This is often one of the most difficult questions you’ll face. The answer depends on your lifestyle, household size, budget and amount of time you have to spend. 2. Plan to unpack BEFORE you pack. Take photos of each room in your new home before you arrive and decide where furniture, plants, and electronics will go. Having a plan will make your packing that much easier. 3. Keep track of small parts. Some items need to be broken down into pieces when moving. By putting everything in a baggie that is clearly marked and sealed those little items won’t get lost in the move. 4. Take pictures of electronic hook-ups. Moving TVs, home theater systems and computers can be challenging. Before unplugging any wires, take a photo of the connections. This will create fewer headaches when setting up technology in the new home. 5. Keep a list. As you place each item in its new room, cross it off the list and you will be one step closer relaxing and enjoying your new home.
