Community Spring Is Time For Change…And We’re Changing!

T

hree years ago I started The Hub because most of all I really need a job, plus I figured the traditional “Community Newspaper” hadn’t really changed in fifty years so why not shake things up a bit and thanks to ya’ll we did!

that is not in the printed publication. We will also have a more robust social media component leading to even greater community involvement. We both look forward to serving you the readers and building a worldclass community publication for a world-class community.

A couple of years ago I had coffee with this guy, Tripp Liles publisher of The Current, a monthly publication that has been around for 5 years. They feature the same attitude and strong commitment to positive reporting as we do at The Hub so over that last couple of months we’ve be talking about the idea of maybe merging into one publication and a couple of weeks ago we decided to go for it!

Tripp and I will serve as co-publishers with him taking the lead on editing and creative and I’ll be heading up the sales, marketing and Public Relations, which really means I got the better of the two jobs!

Starting in April The Hub and The Current will merge into one bigger and better publication called The Current Hub. The Current Hub will still be available in our over 650 locations, and will continue to have the same great community articles and pictures that highlight all of the wonderful things transpiring around us but there will be so much more. In combining these two publications we now have the resources to expand our reach with circulation that now includes mail delivery to over 40,000 homes in communities from East Cobb to Johns Creek. “I’m thrilled to be working with Mark as a partner on this wonderful collaboration. Our strengths are better suited to work with each other not against. With this merger we are poised to become one of the largest publications in the North Metro area. This is great news for our readers and advertisers,” said Liles. The combination will provide comprehensive coverage on the local entertainment, dining and social scene. Additionally, the two entities will have larger staff support, which in turn, will lead to a better publication. The Current Hub’s online presence will be dramatically expanded as well. Our site will feature daily updates and more focus on news and information

The last three years has been amazing and I couldn’t have done any of this without the key members of my staff. Editor AnneMarie Edwards single handedly organized The Hub into a real publication and without whom I could have never survived or grown into what we are today. I also want to thank Adam Brown of Brown Creative who did our first redesign and most recently now Michelle Thompson who’s handled all of the design duties for the last year and a half. Michelle and AnneMarie have so graciously put up with me and help me take my inexperience and vision into what we are today. I also want to thank our advertisers because none of this would have ever been possible without them. Not only are these people my customers they’re my friends and I’m glad they’re coming on board for this new journey. Michelle and AnneMarie have so graciously put up with me and helped me take my inexperience and vision into what we are today. I also want to thank our advertisers because none of this would have ever been possible without them. Not only are these people my customers they’re my friends and I’m glad they’re coming on board for this new journey. In some ways I’m sad to see that what we started is changing but on the other hand I’m so thrilled at the opportunities that lie ahead.

Community 50 Halfs in 50 States

L

ocal Alpharetta resident, Brian Baleno, can often be spotted running along Westside or Windward P arkways. When he’s not running that route, you may discover him jogging on Academy Street or Old Milton Parkway. Brian moved to Alpharetta fourteen years ago after graduating from the University of Pittsburgh and has been running up and down the streets of Alpharetta ever since. His recently published book, “50 Halfs from First to Last”, takes readers on a fifty state journey as he runs a half marathon in each state. The book begins by explaining how Brian developed a passion for running after his college soccer career ended. Early in the story, Brian reveals the benefits of living in Alpharetta including the moderate temperatures in the spring and fall which are ideal for running. The first adventure he reveals is completing his first marathon in Albany, Georgia. Brian takes you on training run along the streets of Alpharetta as he runs up Academy Street toward downtown past the Corner Deli. Throughout Brian’s adventure, he describes everything that went into running a half marathon including the preparation, travel, and recovery. The three year endeavor vividly describes the vast American landscape. It’s less a story about personal accomplishment and more a celebration of our beautiful country and everything it has to offer. Brian appeals to both runners and those who simply love travel. As you read his story, you feel as though you are running right alongside him, seeing, hearing, and feeling the very same emotions he is experiencing. “50 Halfs from First to Last” is Brian’s second book following his debut novel, “+ One.”

Rotary Club of Alpharetta: Service Above Self

T

he Rotary Club of Alpharetta recently celebrated its 31st year of service to the community. Club members gathered at the Crooked Creek country club to review the year’s successes and to join in fellowship. The club was chartered in 1983 and has been living it’s motto of Service Above Self ever since. In 2013 over 50 service projects were completed, including assisting in the funding and building a sustainable water project in Ecuador. Also locally, the Rotarians made daily deliveries of bread to the food pantry of North Fulton Charities and they have helped end sex trafficking through their work with the City Of Refuge. Among other projects are their efforts to keep our environment clean by picking up trash in the Adopt A Mile program and their steadfast support of our military by serving at the USO and sending care packages to soldiers. Club President Dan Merkel presented several awards during the program, receiving the Service Above Self award was Heather Demis. The Rookie of the Year was Randy Schlitz, William Perkins was named to the Hall of Fame and the Rotarian of the Year was Jason Binder. Merkel said ”Our club continues to build on a solid foundation of service to the community.” He added, ”The Rotary club is proud of its involvement in Alpharetta.”

The Young and the Extraordinary

B

assist extraordinaire, composer, arranger, educator, curator and administrator, Christian McBride, has been one of the most important and most omnipresent figures in the jazz world for 20 years. Sometimes hard to believe considering this man is not yet 40. You can catch Christian’s performances at The Velvet Note Acoustic Living Room this month on March 20-30.

2014 Pink Affair

T

he Pink Affair will be held at 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 22, 2014, at Country Club of the South in Johns Creek. Tickets are $85 prior to March 8th and $100 after that date and can be obtained at http://www.thepinkaffair.org/ The Pink Affair features excellent food, entertainment and an outstanding auction that raises over $40,000 for TurningPoint Breast Cancer Rehabilitation. As the only non-profit organization of its kind in the Southeast, TurningPoint provides over 3,000 patient visits annually; cares for over 300 new patients from across Greater Atlanta each year; and provides a model of rehabilitation care for women with breast cancer nationally. Services are provided to women regardless of their ability, and approximately 50% of uninsured or underinsured patients receive financial assistance.

If you have any questions, please contact Erin Long at 770.360.9271 or elong@myturningpoint.org.

Beginning in 1989, this Philadelphia-born bassist moved to New York City to further his classical studies at the Juilliard School, only to be snatched up by alto saxophonist, Bobby Watson. Since then, McBride’s list of accomplishments have been nothing short of staggering. As a sideman in the jazz world alone, he’s worked with the best of the very best – Freddie Hubbard, Sonny Rollins, J.J. Johnson, Ray Brown, Milt Jackson, McCoy Tyner, Roy Haynes, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock and Pat Metheny. In the R&B world, he’s not only played with, but also arranged for Isaac Hayes, Chaka Khan, Natalie Cole, Lalah Hathaway, and the one and only Godfather of Soul himself, James Brown. In the pop/rock world, he’s extensively collaborated with Sting, Carly Simon, Don Henley, and Bruce Hornsby. In the hip-hop/neo-soul world, he’s collaborated with the Roots, D’Angelo, and Queen Latifah. In many other specialty projects, he’s worked closely with opera legend Kathleen Battle, bass virtuoso Edgar Meyer, the Shanghai Quartet and the Sonus Quartet. Away from the bass, Christian has become quite an astute and respected spokesperson for the music. In 1997, he spoke on former President Bill Clinton?s town hall meeting “Racism in the Performing Arts”. In 2000, he was named Artistic Director of the Jazz Aspen Snowmass Summer Sessions. In 2005, he was officially named the co-director of the National Jazz Museum in Harlem. Also in 2005, he was named the second Creative Chair for Jazz of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association.

Community Painting Party With A Purpose!

W

ho would have thought a painting party could bring so much joy and inspiration to our community? The Circle of Sisters ministry from St. Brigid Catholic Church in Johns Creek “Painted it Forward” with a CARING CANVASES painting party on Wednesday, February 19. Approximately 40 women gathered together to create inspirational canvases to be donated to The Drake House. The Drake House provides short-term crisis housing to homeless mothers and children in the north metro Atlanta area. The beautiful canvases will serve as inspiration for their residents to enjoy in their temporary home, as well as for years to come as they transition into a permanent home. The mission of CARING CANVASES, an art ministry of Joy to the WORD, LLC is to spread uplifting messages to others through inspirational art. Eileen Sirica Cardillo, Atlanta artist and founder, said of the event, “What an incredible group of women at St. Brigid, who shared their kindness, compassion and many artistic talents for this worthwhile organization! We were privileged to be a part of such a wonderful evening of fellowship, and we know The Drake House residents will smile and gain strength in knowing how much their neighbors really do CARE!” Your group can also host a CARING CANVASES, Painting Party with a Purpose, for the charitable organization of your choice. Each piece will be signed by you and donated to bring smiles and encouragement to people in need…a fun and rewarding group activity with family, friends, or coworkers!”

Please visit the ‘CARING CANVASES’ tab at www.joytothewordart.com. Let’s keep “Painting it Forward” in our community!

How To Choose A Babysitter

C

hoosing a qualified, responsible, smart and kind babysitter or nanny can seem daunting. While all parents dream of a Mary Poppins falling into their laps, finding the perfect childcare provider usually requires a bit more legwork. “Ensuring your child is in the right hands is something you should do well before a nanny cam gets a chance to reveal something is amiss. Unfortunately, many parents don’t do their due diligence when it comes to vetting babysitters and nannies,” says Darren Dupriest, President and CEO of Validity Screening Solutions, a leading provider of background checks for employers and parents hiring childcare providers. Here are some ways you can be more proactive and thorough in your hiring search:

Interview

A face-to-face interview is the time to get to know the candidate. Prepare a list of questions to ask, but be open to letting the conversation flow naturally. Remember, not all sitters and nannies will “click” with all children. So if possible, include your child in the interview process to get a better sense of how he or she interacts with the potential caretaker.

References

If you had the family car or leaky faucet fixed, you likely asked neighbors for references for top mechanics and plumbers. Don’t neglect this important, personal outlet in the search for great childcare providers. A tried and true candidate often beats a total shot in the dark

Background Checks

Even with stellar praise from references, a background check is a crucial step in the search. But not all background screening searches are the same. While information from Internet databases can be acquired cheaply and quickly, such websites can leave trusting parents with a false sense of security, as secondhand information can become outdated in as little as five days. A good caregiver screening will search criminal records to identify any felony or misdemeanor, criminal convictions or pending cases involving the candidate, as well as sex offender registries and driving records. It will also provide verifications of claimed past employment, education and certifications. For accurate, current information, opt for a comprehensive background screening service, such as Validity Screening Solutions, which conducts a live records search, going directly to the source of information. More information about what a comprehensive background search entails can be found at www.validityscreening.com. The importance of quality childcare cannot be overstated. Through references, an employment screening and a comprehensive interview, you can be more confident in your selection.

Great Car Care Tips for Seniors

C

ar repair and maintenance can put a strain on both a senior’s budget and back. With some smart and simple preventive care, you can reduce automotive troubles down the line.

Tread and Tire Pressure The last thing any senior needs is a blown out tire while driving. Avoid this dangerous scenario by checking the tread on your tires and the air pressure once a month. Tires with little or no tread and that are showing threads are unsafe and should be replaced immediately. For

the recommended air pressure for your tires, do not go by the numbers on the sidewall of the tires. Instead, refer to the owner’s manual or sticker on the driver’s side door. Not only does proper air pressure decrease the likelihood of a blowout, but it increases your car’s gas mileage, and gives your vehicle better traction.

Change the Oil The truth is that oil changes take time and money. However, if this task is not done routinely, then the overall health of your engine can be jeopardized. When using conventional oil, it’s recommended to change the oil every 3,000 miles. However you can save yourself some work and better protect your investment by using high-quality synthetic motor oil instead. For example, Royal Purple HMX is specifically designed to minimize wear and tear and restore performance in engines with more than 75,000 miles. Instead of the typical oil change once every 3,000 miles, synthetic oil can reduce the frequency to once every 10,000 to 15,000 miles, or once every 12 months, depending on how much your vehicle is used. For more information on how you can maximize your engine’s longevity and save money, visit www.RoyalPurpleConsumer.com.

Check Lights Don’t be the one left in the dark. Regularly check your headlights, taillights, turning signals and brake lights. Thousands of accidents a year are the direct result of failed lights. Check your lights by asking a trusted neighbor, friend or family member to walk around your car as you turn the headlights, taillights and turning signals off and on. Also, apply light pressure to the brake to make sure your brake lights are working as well. If a light is out, check the fuses. An easy do-it-yourself replacement can save you time and money. You don’t have to be a professional mechanic or overextend your budget to increase the lifetime of your car. Some simple proactive and regular care will go a long way in keeping you and your car together, far down the road.

ig smiles, high-fives, and lots of laughs could be seen on Feb. 7, 2014 at the Child Development Association in Roswell, when Alpharetta Children’s Dentistry & Orthodontics participated in the 11th annual American Dental Association’s Give Kids a Smile® Day. Dr. Mac, along with a group of volunteers from ACD, visited the Child Development Association to provide free dental screenings to 87 children, and will also be providing any follow-up treatment that is necessary at no cost. The children who attended the CDA were all given toothbrushes, prizes, and some helpful tips for brushing and flossing. For the past 45 years, the Child Development Association has provided affordable early learning programs and childcare for

preschool children of low-income, working families in the metro Atlanta area. The organization serves hungry children and their families, often through food pantries set up in local schools. Northwood decided to hold its food drive in February because many area food pantries are fully stocked with food around the holidays, but become sparse during the months between. How to Pick a Tablet for Kids

E

veryone is using technology to stay connected these days -especially kids. Now is a great time to think about getting your kids a device to keep them plugged in and learning at the same time, like their very own tablet computer. Parents worry mobile technology can be expensive, breakable and give users access to a world of information -- not all of it kid-friendly. But that doesn’t mean you should exclude the next generation from the tech trend, say experts.

“Technology can be intimidating for parents who aren’t familiar with the wide array of choices available,” says Dr. Eric Klopfer, Toy Development Consultant and Learning Expert at VTech, a maker of age-appropriate and developmental stage-based electronic learning products for children. “But there are good options out there that can provide safe, fun, innovative, yet age appropriate experiences for young kids – if you know where to look.”

Here are some things to consider when looking for new technologies for children: • Kid-friendly tablet: A conventional tablet is a delicate,

breakable instrument. But a kid-friendly tablet is tough, durable and able to withstand being handled by little ones. For example, VTech’s InnoTab3S, is made to fit comfortably in little kid hands, so they’ll be more likely to maintain a good grip.

• Safe messaging: Whether they are at daycare, a neighbor’s

house or across the country visiting grandparents, a tablet can help kids stay connected to their parents. And thanks to breakthroughs in kid-safe family networking, you can ensure your children are communicating only with people approved by you. The VTech Kid Connect app, for example, allows for safe communication with parents and friends through an InnoTab 3S tablet.

Preschoolers as young as three years old can emulate their parents and older siblings, allowing them to feel like they are part of the messaging trend by sending text and voice messages to parents’ smartphones, all from a kid-safe, kid-friendly tablet.

• Safe browsing: With a kid-safe Web browser, kids won’t be able to access inappropriate content, but can still explore the sites they love through an easy-to-navigate format.

• Educational content: You can give your kids full-time access

to great educational content with the right downloads. Look for educator-approved fun and games.

More tech tips for parents can be found at www.VTechKids.com. By being selective, you can help your kids stay on top of tech trends safely and securely.

Durable, kid-friendly tablets can help you avoid a costly accident.

Schools March is Youth Art Month

T

hese Northwood Elementary 2nd graders created pieces that were chosen to be displayed at Fulton County Schools Administration Building. The students drew themselves in an action pose, and then traced the shape onto black paper to create their shadow. They placed their figures in a blue background winter scene, adding objects in the foreground and background to create the illusion of depth.

THE BEST....?

E

very Spring I get a lot of questions from the parents of my preschool and after school program on what to look for (and guard against) when evaluating the various summer camps available for their child. Parents are under a lot of pressure ~ today’s kids enjoy (and yes demand) a lot of “entertainment quality” . So what to do? Obviously the very first item on a parent’s check list must be safety. This includes not only the safety of the environment and the activities provided but the quality of the staff that will be with your child ALL DAY. Has the Summer Camp been evaluated, approved, and licensed by the State of Georgia? If not, why not? Ask to be shown the license which must be posted. Some of these type camps pop up only for the summer months and have a primarily teen-age staff which haven’t even been hired yet and have little training. Young campers may think this type of summer staff is super cool, but if something happens....not so cool. Are they telling you that an adult will be”over-seeing”....we all know what that actually means....? The second item to look at is the variety of activities. A camp that provides a variety of exciting field trip venues, planned outside physical activities with trained instructors, and the opportunity to keep the campers “summer sharp” academically with fun games & clubs will provide just the right blend of it all! So please make sure you are very comfortable with the “theme” or “personality” of the camp you are considering whether it be an outdoors, athletically driven camp or a field trip venue, new experiences driven camp. And finally, how much does it cost? Is it cheap? Ask why? Is it expensive? Make sure there is a reason for it.

Kay Paschal

Owner, Peachtree Park Prep

There is no shortage of Summer Camp programs available. Be sure “THE BEST” you are considering is not just a slogan..

Amazing Kids Helping Out During The Storm “Caring about others, running the risk of feeling, and leaving an impact on people, brings happiness.” –Harold Kushner

T

he snow week of January 28th was terrifying for most people here in Johns Creek. The risk of driving in the ice to come home warm to their loved ones was too high and put fear in everyone’s hearts. Unprepared, they had to make the best of the situation and unfortunately this caused stress, tears, and in the case of many, many people being stranded in the roads with nowhere to go. Bickford Senior Living in Alpharetta and the amazing Quentin Huguley, 11 years old, teamed up to do their share of helping. Just a few days before, Quentin had won class president at Pineridge Elementary School and wasn’t looking forward to having to skip school because of the snow. He came to work with his mom, Nurse Kim Huguley. As the day progressed he became more and more excited, and then began to see the cars sliding down the roads and getting stuck in the ice. Bickford Senior Living went out of their way to assist these people and gave out coffee, blankets, food, and a warm place to stay. “We wanted to make them feel at home as much as possible.” Quentin stated. As for why they felt the need to help, “We are an assisted living and memory care, and it’s our job to take of people. We are a family and that’s what we do…take care of people.” said Nurse Rachel Davis. Everybody was shocked, happy, and most importantly grateful for the kindness that Bickford Senior Living showed. The staff there displayed their amazing character to the community that day. For example Quentin Brown, also known as Chef Q, came into his first day on the job not knowing the future outcome of the storm. Despite this sudden change he went out of his way to cook and provide drinks for the over 50 people that came in, then in the morning prepared a warm breakfast for everybody.

That night Quentin Huguley stayed up until 2 am helping the people that came in. He is the type of kid that doesn’t need a reason to assist anyone in the community other that the kindness in his heart. His advice for charity and giving back is “Don’t listen to the people who are trying to make you feel bad for what you are doing, don’t be the person who is scared to try; just listen to your heart and make a difference.” And finally by Hope Kemp-Hanson the Executive Director LaDonna Hagen announced, “I am so proud of my entire staff here at Bickford and the young man Quentin for being a hero and helping so many other people in a time of need.”

Love & Relationships

Did You Know Becoming More Spiritual Can Make Your Relationship Better?

W

hen people talk about spirituality it is often confused with going to church more often. However, the true meaning of spirituality is defined by the relationship one has with God. This relationship is not defined by the rules of a particular religion but rather by the simple truths of our existence. Some of those truths are: As beings we always have been and always will be, we are tiny lights of God and are part of Him, and that the experience of life is about growth and evolution. Understanding the reason for our existence and the simple truths of the universe help life seem more purposeful making us happier as human beings.

potential, as a by-product, you will naturally treat your self and your partner better. We are a tiny genetic reflection of God, so when you think of mistreating or not giving your best to your partner, what your really doing is not giving your best to God and your partner. If ultimately, we are here to grow and experience, there is room for mistakes and perfection is not expected. However, when we have a bad day in our relationship we must take time to reflect and ask God for help is guiding our growth and evolution.

When you truly know how important you are to God, it makes you want to live your life to it’s highest potential. When living to your highest

Health & Wellness/Woman’s World How Daily Habits Impact Your Sleep

C

hronic lack of sleep has been linked to health problems such as obesity, diabetes, depression and cardiovascular disease.

Here are some simple solutions to help you catch more Zzzz’s and improve your health.

• Limit technology. Studies show that

chronic light from TVs, cell phones and other electronic devices decreases your brain’s production of melatonin, the hormone that promotes sleep onset. Avoid any source of bright light in the evenings and make your bedroom a technology-free zone.

• Limit caffeine. Consuming too much

caffeine can prevent a restful night of sleep. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends limiting caffeine intake to about 300-400 milligrams per day (about three to four 8-ounce cups of coffee), and avoiding it all together in the late afternoon and evening.

• Watch your weight. Being overweight

can impact your sleep by affecting your breathing and your ability to get comfortable. Exercising increases your metabolism and tires yourself out for bed. If you work out at night, finish at least three hours before bedtime.

If sleep problems persist for a few weeks, it is important to talk to a health care provider, as you may have a sleep disorder. Call the Northside Hospital Sleep Disorders Centers-at Atlanta, Cherokee and Forsyth- at (404) 851-8135.

To watch videos and learn more about how to get a better night’s sleep, visit www.northside.com/sleep.

Making the Connection

O

ne of the strongest builders in relationships is the ability to connect through empathy. Unfortunately, we all have had a loss or a struggle. During that time, we really needed someone to be there with us in it. The main difference between someone showing sympathy and empathy is the message behind it. Empathy is letting the person know you are there for them and you relate and connect to the feelings they are experiencing. It’s not that the person showing empathy needs to have had the same thing happen to them, they just need to connect to the feelings in the experience. We all know sadness, despair, a broken heart, feeling out of control, etc.

On the other hand, there’s sympathy. This is a quick “drop and run” type of response. What’s behind this is a lack of connection. Sympathy sends the message, “I don’t want to connect to your feelings. I’m not going there with you. Here’s a card. Goodbye.” Big difference.

Here’s what some empathetic responses can look like: 1. Call someone and say, “ I’m so sorry to hear you are going through

this. I can relate to your feelings of (fill in the blank). I’m here to listen.”

2. I don’t know what to say to make this better for you, but I’m here. My heart is hurting for you and I’m with you through this.

3. Give an example of an experience you had where

you experienced similar feelings. Again, not the same experience, but shared feelings. This helps the person feel like they are not alone.

Think of a time you gave or received empathy. How did it feel? How did it help? What about sympathy? We all need to feel connected to one another. Empathy is not a skill we either have or don’t have. It takes practice, but it will change your relationships!

Money Matters/Technology The Economic Snow-down

R

emember when we were kids and prayed for snow days? It was all laughter and fun. Even as adults here in the South we secretly looked forward to those oh-so-rare days when life ground to a standstill under a blanket of bright white. Who would have thought we’d ever get sick of snow here in Atlanta? But I think that’s the general consensus after a month of life-disrupting storms. The uncharacteristically harsh weather has done more than strain the sanity of parents stuck at home with out-of-school kids. The ice and snow have battered economic activity. Some 75,000 airline flights have been cancelled since December. Car sales, retail spending, construction activity and gasoline sales have all been impacted, along with worker productivity. How many days of work have you missed in recent weeks? After a hiring pick-up in the fall, only 75,000 jobs were added in December and just 113,000 in January. Twenty percent of the work force is hourly. If they can’t get to work for a week or even a day, they don’t get paid and thus have less to spend. And Old Man Winter isn’t the only culprit this season. In California’s balmy Central Valley, a drought of historic proportions threatens to empty America’s breadbasket. There’s a very good chance that you ate something today that was grown in the Central Valley -- and that you’ll pay a lot more for that food item in the coming months.

None of this is good news for the economy or our wallets. If there is a silver lining to the winter storm clouds, it’s the pent-up demand created by our inability to go about our business during the rain, sleet and freezing temperatures. Barring some unforeseen circumstance, economic activity should recover and maybe even boom with the warmer weather. In the meantime, it’s probably worth pondering the new unpredictability of our weather and how it might affect us as investors, business owners, retirees and simply as human beings trying to make our way through the seasons.

The Technology Zombies Are Coming!

A

re you using a computer that has Microsoft (MS) Windows XP or Office 2003 on it? If so then it is likely your computer is 5 years old or even older. Little do you know your computer will no longer receive the necessary life sustaining security and stability updates from Microsoft as of April 8th, 2014! This means your XP computer or Office 2003 application is end of life and should be functionally dead if you care anything about the security, stability or reliability of your computer, your network and your data contained therein. Why does this matter to you? Microsoft can no longer keep XP and Office 2003 up to date. When Microsoft pulls the plug on the life support for XP and Office 2003 there will be no more fixes for functionality or security related issues. The cyber criminals of the internet, which include Hackers, Malware and Virus creators, know that Microsoft will be off their watch and they are prepared to take advantage of those hundreds of thousands of unsuspecting XP and Office 2003 users. No amount of antivirus or anti-malware software can defend against an unknown or even some known operating system or application vulnerabilities.

If you stay with XP Here are some potential risks involved: Security: Unsupported and unpatched or updated environments are subject to being exploited by cyber criminals and hackers who develop malware and viruses. No Antivirus software is sufficient enough to avoid risk. Compliance: If you are a business owner or manager you may find yourself out of compliance and possibly fined as it relates to regulations specific to your industry: HIPAA (Healthcare), Sarbanes-Oxley (Finance) and PCI-DSS (Anyone who takes credit card information for payment).

Lack of Independent Software Application Support: You will increasingly find that most notable applications you use every day will no longer support software installed on a Windows XP machine (i.e. QuickBooks, Quicken, Peachtree Accounting, Firefox, Chrome, Internet Explorer, iTunes, MS Office, Adobe Acrobat, etc.).

How to Avoid Becoming a Technology Zombie:

Upgrade to a Modern Operating System or Application: Unfortunately, most 5 year old computers will not be compatible with an upgrade but if you have any questions you can use this URL to guide you: http:// goo.gl/as26tx. If you have Office 2003 then simply invest in the newest version of MS Office from your local retailer (NOTE: the most recent version of MS Office is NOT Compatible with VISTA).

Invest in a new or Used/Refurbished Computer: There

are a wide variety of modern supported computers ranging from the inexpensive to the high performance. The good news is that newer computers cost less on average in comparison to 5 years ago and they are considerably faster! You will not miss your old system (that’s a promise). Remember: It is always best to, “Plan the retirement of your Technology, rather than let your technology plan it for you”. If you value your personal information (pictures, finance, etc.) or business data (client info, financials, etc.) then you owe it to yourself and your clients to avoid becoming a Technology Zombie and migrate to a modern operating system and/or a modern office application suite. Do NOT become one of the “Walking Dead” as it relates to technology!

t n e m e v o r p m I e The Hub’s Hom African Land Snail vs. Lawn Mower Blades

H

ave you heard about the African Land Snail problem that south Florida is dealing with? Very interesting yet very disgusting at the same time.

South Florida residents are being warned to be on the lookout for one of the world’s most destructive invasive species: the giant African land snail, which can grow as big as a rat. (Foxnews: http:// fxn.ws/17AOM91) Yuck! The article goes on to mention that they are actively catching over 1000 each week! They can produce over 1200 eggs per year! The problems that they cause are structural as they will feast on stucco and plastic (gaining nutrients for their shells) and they are also very fond of plants… anything green and they will destroy it. They also wreak havoc on tires on the road and become a projectile of shell, slime and excrement after lawn mowers suck them up and spit them out.

or water hoses have had short life spans because they were hidden from view in the grass? How many tree stumps, bricks or rocks have you encountered. How much mulch, pine straw, pinecones or fallen tree limbs do you ignore? The impact may be powerful enough to shear the flywheel key. If it is really bad, it is possible it could bend your crankshaft. (We see it ALL THE TIME) Belts can become damaged. Gears and pulleys can become damaged. Not to mention the fact that when you hit any object other than grass, the rough/hard object will most likely bend the blade. Your grass won’t look as good and you actually increase the chance of disease to your lawn from ripped grass clippings vs clean cuts. So let the African Land Snail be a lesson to you. As you go out to cut your grass for the first time this spring, don’t just haphazardly cut. We don’t have to worry about them in Atlanta or North Georgia (yet), but there are many other dangers lurking in your lawn that can similarly do damage to your mower.

Double yuck.

And… if you did run over that landscaping paver, and you need a new lawn mower blade for your Honda mower, give us a call.

I read this and thought about what we’d be dealing with as outdoor power experts if we had to work on mowers that were being subjected to the conditions of South Florida, but then I thought about it. Snails or not, we need to warn everyone to be aware of what is lurking in your grass and do your best to keep from damaging your blade and mower from foreign objects.

Easy Tips to Spruce-Up Your Home’s Exterior Trim

T

rimming out a house “from the top down” with colorful but lowmaintenance finishes and accessories is a growing trend for busy homeowners looking for easy-care home exteriors. Experts advise starting at the top of your home with gable vents and louvers, and then making your way down with decorative millwork, window and door trim, followed by a balustrade system and porch columns.

Roofline

“Today’s homeowners are selecting materials for the outside of the home that are long-lasting and require minimal upkeep,” says Heather Kovacs, product manager for Fypon. “Urethane and PVC accessories perfectly match the needs of homeowners looking for stylish exterior enhancements that resist moisture, insects, cracking, peeling, rotting and warping.”

Windows and Doors

Depending on the look you’re going for, keep in mind the finish. If you plan to paint the accessories, a smooth finish works best. For staining, opt for timber. A stone cast replicates concrete. With these options, you can personalize your home exterior and complement your home’s design with durable, synthetic materials.

At the roofline of the home, consider gable vents and louvers that come in shapes like octagons, cathedral, triangles and ovals. Functional venting louvers should feature corrosion-resistant screens to help keep insects out of the home and angled slates to protect interiors from rain, while still encouraging ventilation for attic spaces. Pilasters, pediments, crossheads and shutters can enhance key elements of a home’s exterior. “The windows on the front of a home gain tremendous curb appeal when accented by trim accessories,” points out Kovacs. “Similarly, you can transform a ho-hum entryway into a stunning grand entrance for a home by installing easy-care door surrounds.”

Eaves

To add the ultimate finishing touch to eaves and window areas on the exterior, Kovacs recommends incorporating brackets, dentil blocks and corbels. These pieces can be positioned under showcase window areas and on porches, and are also typically found under the roofline of a home. A trellis system installed above a garage door or a secondary entryway of the home can carry through the decorative elements on the exterior.

Color

With the right color combinations, the trim you add to your home can be striking, drawing together the entire exterior. For this reason, it’s best to consider materials that come with a pre-primed surface ready to stain or paint. For example, Fypon offers paintable detailed mouldings, brackets, trellis systems, louvers and other millwork pieces in a variety of architectural styles that are low-maintenance and weather resistant. For color and style tips, visit www.Fypon.com/ design. For an easy way to add instant curb appeal and character to your home, consider trimming your home top to bottom.

Is Your Home Prepared for Warmer Weather?

W

armer weather is just around the corner, which means higher temperatures. But does it have to mean higher energy bills too? The answer is no. There are numerous ways to keep your home cool and bills low this summer. After a few months off, it is vital to check that your air conditioning system is still working in an efficient and optimal manner. If you have a central air conditioning system, for peace of mind, you might want to have your system checked by an HVACR professional. In order to save, be sure to shop around for special deals, which are not difficult to find for seasonal preventive maintenance. Understand however, that the proficiency of HVACR technicians differs greatly.

energy savings. For substantive results, proper installation, service and maintenance are important too. So do yourself a favor -request the service of a NATE-certified technician. In order to locate a contractor that employs certified technicians, look for the NATE logo or go to www.HVACRAdvice.com. By taking preventive measures, you can rest assured that this season you will be cool while saving money and energy..

Courtesy: StatePoint

When searching for the right HVACR technicians for your home, one way to make certain that the job will be done properly and effectively is by hiring a professional certified by North American Technician Excellence (NATE), the nation’s largest independent, non-profit certification body for HVACR technicians. NATE-certified technicians are qualified to properly install and service equipment, which means maximum home comfort and energy savings. Once a NATE certified HVACR technician has inspected your system for efficiency, there are a number of things you can do to keep energy bills low: • Clean your air filters. Check them every couple of weeks and change them at least twice in the season, or as directed by the manufacturer. • Don’t obstruct airflow around air conditioner units -- keep them clear of plants and debris. • Raise the thermostat about five degrees, because each degree you raise the thermostat will save you a percentage off your cooling energy bill. • Compare energy bills from last year. If your costs have significantly increased, simply contact a qualified HVACR technician -- they can help determine the source of the problem. Remember, just because you have an energy-approved, eco-friendly, high-efficiency product, it does not mean automatic money and
