Happy 3rd Anniversary! A Special Thanks From The Publisher

A

good friend of mine once told me that “Life never works out the way we plan, but that’s okay because the really interesting stuff is what happens in its place” and I think he was right.

It’s our third anniversary and no one is more surprised than me. I never thought any of this was going to work out; I just figured it would give me something to do before it all went into the crapper, but lo and behold we’re still here and stronger than ever! Let’s face it, who in their right mind starts a magazine (which in reality is actually a newspaper, but I hate the sound of ‘owning a newspaper’ so I call it a magazine) during a recession? While other publications out there are dropping like flies The Hub has overcome all recessionary obstacles and has finally started to thrive. I’ve been blessed to be surrounded by so many amazing people that when I talk about The Hub I use the word “We”. Our team is made up of all kinds of people throughout the community who contribute their time because they want to share their good news. We don’t focus on the bad, the miserable or the disappointments. We focus on the things that allow us to celebrate our lives and the great things that happen to us every day. I’m sure 2014 will be an interesting year for all of us. Some of us will succeed and some will find out that life hasn’t worked out the way we planned, but that’s okay because maybe life really does flourish when we least expect it.

Thanks again for an amazing 2013!

Community First Set of Triplets to Sign With UGA

C

hattahoochee High School’s Kevin, Mick and Jay Litherland have signed national letters of intent to swim for the University of Georgia, becoming the first set of triplets ever to join the Bulldogs’ program. UGA is an NCAA Division I school and a member of the Southeastern Conference. “We are extremely excited about having these three young men join us,” said Georgia coach Jack Bauerle. “They are all great swimmers, and they are highly thought of in the swimming world nationally. Each one is a talented young man, and they will have a profound effect on our program, particularly at the NCAAs level. They all had extremely successful summers, and they are all on their way up. I am looking forward to seeing what they do for Georgia and for themselves.” The triplets, who have been swimming competitively since they were 7, set several state records in Florida prior to moving to Georgia in 2008, where success followed them to Dynamo Swim Club and later, Chattahoochee High School. Of the 11 records listed on the CHS Swim and Dive website, eight are held by at least one Litherland. All three are four-year letterman as well as current team captains. All three have been named team MVP. All three, swimming for Dynamo, qualified for the 2012 London Olympic Team Trials. And all three – well-rounded in every stroke but each with his own specialty – have their sights set on Rio in 2016. What’s more, all three have a trio of nations they could choose between to potentially represent: the United States, Japan, the homeland of their mother and New Zealand, the homeland of their father. But first, all three are focusing on their last high school swim season and the dream of a 6A state championship bid for Hooch, a fitting addition to the long list of accomplishments the Litherlands will be taking with them to UGA next fall. Jay, a member of the United States National Junior Team in the individual medley events, was the bronze medalist in the 400 individual medley at the Junior Nationals. He came in sixth in the 400 individual medley in the World Junior Championships and was seventh in the 400 individual medley in the FINA World Cup. With two state records and three high school marks, Jay is ranked No. 2 in the 400 individual medley and No. 4 in the 200 individual medley and holds top-10 rankings in the 1,000 freestyle and the 200 backstroke.

2013-2014 Global Grant Water Treatment Plant

R

otarians from the Rotary Club of Alpharetta recently visited the first phase of construction of the Water Treatment Plant in the Manabí Province of Ecuador. This Rotary International Global Grant project was submitted by the Rotary Clubs of Portoviejo Reales Tamarindos and Alpharetta in the Rotary year 2013 - 2014. The Rotary Clubs of Dunwoody, Sandy Springs and South Forsyth partnered in funding the project. The plant is projected to support 4,400 residents in the Communities of Las Gilses and La Boca. The plant is designed with a chemical injection, filtration, and active chlorination system. It is capable of storing 25 cubic meters of raw water, with a capacity to produce 20 cubic meters of water hourly and store 50 cubic meters of treated water. The RC Portoviejo Reales Tamarindos in coordination with the Communities will provide training at the child, adolescent, and adult level on the proper handling of water for health and sanitation. The local schools will include safe water and sanitation in their curriculum. A Water Authority has been established responsible to maintain the facility and bill the residents. The Water Treatment Facility is expected to be completed by June 2014.

Kevin, a member of the United States National Junior Team in the 1,500 freestyle, was the bronze medalist in the 800 freestyle in the U.S. Open and in the 1,500 freestyle at the Junior Nationals. He holds the country’s top time in the 800 freestyle and has top-15 national rankings in the 400 and 1,500 freestyle and the 400 individual medley. Kevin set two state records and two high school marks. Mick, a finalist at the Junior Nationals in the 200 butterfly and the 400 individual medley, set one state and three high school records. He is ranked No. 7 nationally in the 200 butterfly and has top-25 rankings in the 400 individual medley and the 800 freestyle. Mick has been recognized as a Scholastic All-American.

Alpharetta Rotarians Spread Cheer

R

otarians from the Alpharetta Club recently visited Dogwood Terrace to show some Christmas spirit and give out holiday fruit baskets. For many years, members have made it a point to visit with senior citizens that may be “shut in” or otherwise not able to participate in Christmas festivities. Led by long time member Lawrence Mulkey, Alpharetta Rotarians packed baskets with fruit, nuts, candy and other goodies. These baskets and the cheer they bring are warmly welcomed by Dogwoods residents. The highlight every year is a special visit by St. Nick himself. Alpharetta Rotary President Dan Merkel said, “we are glad we can help spread goodwill and friendship at this time of the year.” Merkel added,” our club is proud that we help in our local community.” Over 50 baskets were given out by the Alpharetta Rotary Club. This year the club was assisted by members of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

irginia Schenck grew up in Central Florida, outside of Orlando, as the youngest of four kids in a musical family. Her parents always had music playing in the house, anything from opera to Patsy Cline to Mahalia Jackson. She started playing piano and singing in church choir at eight years old, then went on to school musicals and plays. Virginia graduated from the school of music at Florida State University, where she studied both classical and jazz music, although her degree is in music therapy. For years, she worked in psychiatric hospitals and schools, helping people learn and heal through music therapy. Virginia says, “When I perform today, I think a lot about who is in the audience, what they’re feeling, and how my music can impact them. I guess I just bring a bit of the therapeutic background to the stage” Virginia is an interesting contradiction, she looks like a reserved therapist or polished corporate executive, but she definitely has a wild side. “I know that I surprise people because there is this wild part of me,? she says. ? I tell my neighbors, if they hear a howling in the backyard, don?t worry—its just me. I wear shoes to my shows, but they don?t stay on very long because I have this need to be barefoot when I perform. There?s an extreme call of the wild for me right now. My friend Bobby McFerrin once told me, ?If you?re going to make a mistake, make a big one and let?s make something out of it.? Not to be reckless, but just to be real. It can reside in any person walking around. I may look put together, but I?m really just a woman howling at the moon!? Virginia will perform with an all-star lineup of Kevin Bales on piano, Grammy-winner Rodney Jordan on bass, Marlon Patton on drums and Kevin Spears on percussion at the Velvet Note. Showtime’s are 7:30pm and 9:30pm. Tickets are $20 and reservations are strongly encouraged. For more information, go to wwww. thevelvetnote.com/virginia-schenck

hrough the years, Senior Services North Fulton (SSNF) and their group of dedicated volunteers and staff have been bringing the community together to celebrate the lives of seniors and raise awareness and support for the programs and services they need. They are the only nonprofit in North Fulton dedicated to serving older adults residing in Alpharetta, Johns Creek, Milton, Mountain Park, Roswell and Sandy Springs. Jacqueline Chambliss Wine & Food

F

or nearly two years, we’ve had the privilege of the expertise of Jacqueline Chambliss.

Jacqueline’s love for wine started many years ago at a friend’s dinner party. Her host/ friend was serving a blush colored wine, from a carafe. Jacqueline recalls, “I don’t quite remember the dinner, but I do remember my first sip of that wine. It was cold and fruity, full of ripe citrus and stone fruit combined. I couldn’t describe it then. All I knew was that I couldn’t stop drinking it, it was so good…..what made this wine taste this way?” Her quest of finding out started with an online wine course. Dozens of courses later, she was on the road to becoming a Master of Wine through WSET. Today, her mission is to teach people about wine so that they can savor and enjoy and incorporate wine traditions from around the world, into their own lives. By the way, it turned out that that blush wine she was drinking was her hosts’ next door neighbors’ homemade wine. They had made it in their basement. She credits their homemade blush wine for putting her on her path today, bringing the global awareness of wine to the forefront, and educating people about wine and the regions they come from. Jacqueline’s other interests are Food and Flea Marketing.

After entering a mobile gemstone mine, each student received a box with mining ore to “sluice” through to find gems. As students washed the mining ore in a water plume, various rocks and minerals were uncovered. Students returned to class to examine and identify their collection and watched a video presentation about different physical properties of their gems.

Studying rocks and minerals is a third grade curriculum standard, and this hands-on activity allows students to learn about rock and mineral classifications and identification.

Schools White House Honored Heather Cox as Connected Educator “Champion of Change”

H

eather Cox, fourth grade teacher and grade-level chair at Crabapple Crossing Elementary School in Milton, Georgia, was part of a panel, with the President of the United States, discussing technology and how it can enhance learning and personalize instruction. Heather was one of ten chosen in the U.S. and the only person from the Southeastern states. President Obama mentioned her work in his speech, “…Mrs. Cox is doing great things at CCES.” A transplant from Cleveland, Ohio, Heather began teaching in the Fulton County School system in 2004. Throughout the past school year, Heather helped to begin a Bring Your Own Technology pilot in the fourth and fifth grades, which provides instruction and training to teachers during and after school. In addition, with the aid of a team teacher, Heather began an after-school technology club to further technology instruction beyond the school day. As a current member of Fulton County’s first Vanguard Technology team, Heather continues to seek ways to improve and expand her professional knowledge and technology instruction in the classroom.

Kids and Kay Here’s To A New Year Of … “Loving To Learn!”

J

ust when you thought you could take a deep breath and relax after the craziness of the holiday season, for those of you with preschoolers it’s time to make plans and to make the rounds of Open Houses – and Kindergarten is just eight months away! Private or public school, going to school “on time” (per your child’s birthday and Georgia regulations), or “red-shirting” them (Google that!) are just a few of the decisions parents of a young student need to make. As with most things that concern children, you will not know if you made the “best” decision until possibly years down the road. Sometimes there is no “best” plan. Sometimes what’s right for one child in your family doesn’t work for the other child. Today there are so many options for educating children that’s it’s almost impossible to even know what all the options even are! In counseling so many preschool parents throughout the years the best advice I can give still remains: know your child’s strengths and weaknesses from their preschool teacher and stay involved in their education no matter what school choice you make. You know your child better than anyone and no one can be a better advocate for the “best” education for them than you. This is a sure-fire way for both you and your child to have “the best” educational experience. “Loving to Learn!”

Happy New Year!

Let’s Be Grateful for the Intangibles

W

hen we start a new year we often reflect on the last one. Although we are often reminded that the “good things in life are free,” most of us tend to measure our success by the things we can count, like our bank accounts, homes, or cars. Love and relationships are things that are not tangible with no scientific measure for them and this is probably why we sometimes take them for granted. In past times in my marriage, I often focused on what I believed were my husband’s negative attributes: he is snippy sometimes; he doesn’t share the chores equally, and on and on. Only in those big moments when I was assessing whether I should stay in the relationship did I acknowledge all the positive things that our relationship had to offer. Daily, I forgot to appreciate his supportive ways, the ways he always came through for me, and that he was and is a great dad. Although he possessed all that I looking for in a mate, in those days I chose to focus on the minor things that I did not like.

Sometimes in life we get exactly what we want or need in relationships, but we focus so much on the negative, we are not grateful for the positive. Perhaps in your life, there is a relationship that you are taking for granted. Take a moment to write down all of the positive things you can think of about the person and the relationship and next time they annoy you, refer to this list. I am willing to bet the little annoyances will seem less important and your relationship will be even better in 2014.

Self-Compassion Kick Off

A

s we begin this new year, I thought of all the different topics I could cover. I thought about how important a practice of gratitude is for helping ease fear and foreboding joy. Then there’s cultivating creativity and finding ways to fully express ourselves inside and out. However, what I landed on was the idea of kicking off 2014 with tools of self-compassion. This is hands down what I know my clients struggle with the most in their lives. My clients are not alone! This is why there are books and websites dedicated to ways to increase self-compassion. The first question to ask yourself is, “ Would I talk to or treat a friend the way I’m treating myself right now?” There is a myth that negative self-talk is motivating. However, research supports that shame talk leads us further away from our goals and down paths of sabotage and self-destruction. If you are looking for ways to cope with emotions, want a healthier relationship with yourself and others, and need a tool for the daily stressors in life, I think you may think you’ve hit the mental health jackpot. For your self-compassion kick off, I’m directing you to check out a pioneer in this area, Kristin Neff. Her website, www.SelfCompassion.org has videos, articles, books and even an audio course to check out. I wish you a very compassionate 2014!

Health & Wellness Try a New Sport for the New Year... And Many Years To Come

G

rowing up, I enjoyed playing tennis with my dad in Sandy Springs. It was a fun. social workout. As we start this new year and look to make exercise more a part of our lives, I invite you to consider tennis, as this family-friendly sport will serve up fun and fitness for many years to come.

According to the experts*: * Dr. Ralph Paffenbarger, an internationally recognized exercise

David Martin, RN, CRNFA President/CEO, VEININNOVATIONS www.veininnovations.com

* Thanks to Dr. Jack Groppel, Ph.D, United States Professional Tennis Association Master Professional, for collecting the research.

authority who studied more than 10,000 people for 20 years, reported that people who participated in tennis three hours per week, at a moderately vigorous intensity, cut their risk death of death -- from any cause – in half.

* Dr. Joan Finn and colleagues at Southern Connecticut State

University reported tennis players scored higher in vigor, optimism, and self-esteem while scoring lower in depression, anger, confusion, and anxiety and tension, than other athletes and non-athletes.

* Scientists at the University of Illinois say the alertness and tactical

thinking required by tennis may generate new connections between nerves in the brain, and promote a lifetime of continuing development of the brain.

* Dr. Jim Gavin, author of “The Exercise Habit” says tennis outperforms

golf and most other sports in developing positive personality characteristics.

* Studies in caloric expenditures show that competitive tennis burns more calories than aerobics or cycling.

As a fan of the sport myself, I agree with every one!

Keep Your Resolution Relevant

E

ach year, millions of Americans make resolutions to lose weight and fit into their skinny jeans. The following tips can help you stay on track and achieve your fitness goals this New Year:

• Mix it up. Doing the same workout everyday can get boring…

fast. Mix up your time on the treadmill by adding intervals of intensity to blast more fat and incorporating different activities such as jump roping, hiking and yoga. Working out is a lot easier when you do activities you actually like.

• Don’t be afraid of eating (some) fats. By eating more

healthy fats – unsaturated, mono, poly and omega 3s, found in fish, nuts, seeds and olive oil – you actually absorb more nutrients and feel more satisfied.

• Plan for snack attacks. Keep healthy, satisfying snacks such

as whole wheat crackers and peanut butter, apple slices and string cheese, or dried fruit and mixed nuts on you at all times. Planning ahead helps you make better choices and avoid hunger pitfalls.

• Get more sleep. Getting enough shuteye helps control the hormones that regulate appetite, which can help you make better food choices.

Money Matters What to Do with Your Inheritance

B

aby Boomers, a.k.a. The Luckiest Generation, will inherit some $8.4 trillion dollars in the coming years. Nearly one in five boomers – those born from 1946 to 1965 -- will share in that pot. Thirty percent of “pre-boomers” (1930-1945) expect to receive an inheritance. Fifteen percent of those folks predict to collect more than $100,000 after the funeral. Inheritances are by their nature bittersweet. They come at the terrible cost of losing a loved one. A significant inheritance – like a lottery jackpot – is also a double- edged sword. Properly managed, it can change lives; poorly managed, it can slip through your hands and lead to terrible heartbreak.

3. Protect the kids. Make children wait for their portion of the

inheritance. Many adults can’t be trusted to do the smart thing with a pot of money; just image a teen running loose with a wallet full of cash. It will be empty faster than a can of Pringles at a high school lunch table. Make a note: when it comes time to write your will, specify that any money left to minors be used only for education expenses until the recipients reach a certain age.

Here are some tips for insuring that any bequest you receive is a lasting blessing and not a short-lived curse.

1. Be Patient. Remember that there is no deadline or pressure to

figure out what to do with the money. People often feel like they need to do something as quickly as possible, whether it be investing it, getting a new car, paying off debt, etc. While those may be solid ideas, they can all wait for three, six, or even 12 months while you develop an overall game plan to maximize the benefit to you and your family.

2. Make a plan. Inheritances should be invested and not spent. Live your daily life as though you didn’t get a dime. Elimination of debt is a great use for inheritance money -provided it’s not setting the stage for you to rack up more debt. Putting the money in a retirement or college fund is another sound use.

t n e m e v o r p m I The Hub’s Home What to Consider in a Portable Generator

R

emember Snowmageddon 2011? The city of Atlanta was crippled for most of a week. Ice became a major problem on roads for several days.

• Generators are typically viewed as loud products, but newer ‘inverter style’ technology actually allows some generators to operate no louder than normal speech.

Georgia Power crews (and crews from neighboring states) worked around the clock to get power back to areas of the city and north Georgia. Sled and ice melt sales soared. After the storm passed, we even sold some snow blowers! It was crazy.

• The last thing you want is a generator that you have to constantly be filling the fuel. Some generators (like the Honda Super Quiet EU Generators) can run for up to 20 hours on a single tank of gas!

Since the power outages of Snowmageddon, however, one product has seen many residual sales. Generators. Sure, a lot of folks have been getting generators for the ‘play’ aspect of owning one. Many people are buying portable generators that can be taken camping or tailgating, but most people are also considering the benefits that come from owning a generator during an emergency. Here are some other things to consider when looking for a generator: • If using primarily for emergency power, how easily can you get power to essential home appliances?

• What are your power needs? This really is unique to each person. What must you have in order to be comfortable? It is fairly simple to add up wattage needs and determine what is best for you. Visit howardbrothers.com/wattage-calculator to determine your needs. • Not all generators produce CLEAN power. Now, I’m not talking about smog and pollution (remember a generator can NEVER be run indoors.) Clean power refers to consistent power. No spikes. Spikes can cause equipment to shutdown, but can also damage some appliances. Almost everything digital today has circuitry or a computer to make it run. • Don’t forget service and support over the long term. Your investment should take into consideration regular maintenance. Make sure you have someone who can service the product if there are any problems in the future. If you already have a generator and plan to pull it out in the case of an emergency, make sure you have clean fuel in it. As I’ve mentioned before in previous articles, ethanol in our fuels can cause havoc on small engine power equipment. The fuel breaks down and can invite moisture into the fuel system. Do not use marginal fuel!

Helping Your Pet Adjust to a Move

W

ith all of the stress and confusion that comes with moving don’t forget your four-legged friends. They will sense that something is about to change, so here are a few tips to minimize their anxiety and help your pet adapt to their new home.

1. Keep things as normal as possible. One of the best ways to prepare your pet is to continue as much of their routine as you can. Try and take a break from packing or unpacking for normal play time and grooming. And, stay on schedule for feeding and walks as well.

2. Throw away your stuff, not theirs. One of the best parts of moving is purging all the old junk in the attic and basement that you’ve held onto for years. Try to limit the giveaway pile to your things. One way your pet will feel secure in his new environment is to have his old, ratty bed, ball, or chew toy.

3. Have a plan for moving day. If you have a pet sitter or a friend that your pet knows, have them stay with your pet on moving day. If that’s not possible, set aside a safe place in the new home away from the chaos where your pet cannot get lost or hurt.

4. Help them adjust slowly. As you become familiar with your new surroundings, so is your pet. Slowly introduce rooms in the house as they get more comfortable and let them sniff around and discover their new environment.

5. Be patient. The commotion of a move can sometimes bring up old behavior problems in your pet, so be patient. Consistency is really to the key to making this a great move for you and your four-legged friends.
