If couples don't find ways to defeat this stress and scheduling challenge, they can quickly become disengaged! Have A Heart For NFCC

orth Fulton Community Charities (NFCC) is launching their 2nd Annual Have A HeartforNFCCcampaign in February. Alpharetta Mayor David Belle Isle. Johns Creek Mayor Mike Bodker, Milton Mayor Joe Lockwood, Mountain Park Mayor Jim Still and Roswell Mayor Jere Woods signed a joint proclamation recognizing February as Have A Heart for NFCC month and "calling upon the citizens to join in the celebration by making a contribution in support of the great work that NFCC is doing to enhance the quality of life in our city."

• • • • • • •

The purpose of this 28-day campaign is to raise awareness and much needed funding for the programs and services offered by NFCC. 2013 marks 30 years that NFCC has been serving our community. NFCC's mission is to build self-sufficiency and prevent homelessness and hunger in our community by providing emergency assistance and enrichment programs. For more information on North Fulton Community Charities, or to inquire about the Have A Heart Campaign, please contact Vonda Malbrough, Development Director, at (678) 387-4459, or through email at vmalbrough @nfcchelp.org or visit www.heartfornfcc.org. Calla loved this colorful and versatile floral top with poppy red accents. Loosely draped over a fitted, short black pencil skirt and matching flats, this versatile look can go from warm days to chilly nights with textured tights and a long, flowy sweater.

Johanna selected a popular crochet dress in a calming Monaco blue with drawstring waist, balanced with 3-inch suede boots and matching leather shoulder bag. A soft, flowered hair slide completes her classic romantic look.

Abbotts Hill Elementary Holds Science & Technology Fair

n December 22nd, the North Fulton Forsyth Touchdown Club held its 4th annual Chamber Bowl All-Star Game at Lambert High School in Suwanee. The game pits high school seniors from the North Fulton and Forsyth counties, splitting the schools ' student-athletes into a North and South division.

bbotts Hill Elementary School held its first Science and Technology Fair on January 10, 2013. The Fair was divided into two areas of the school due to the large number of exhibitions and attendees. Participants of the Science Fair represented classes in Kindergarten through 5th Grade. They presented their Science projects and were encouraged to demonstrate them to the guests. The Technology Fair included competitions in several categories such as Multimedia, Animated Graphic Design, Digital Photography and 3-D Modeling, just to name a few. Abbotts Hill Assistant Principal Dr. LaTonya Brown is eager to grow this program in the future, especially after seeing so much enthusiasm from all those involved.

After two years of domination by the South team, the North AllStars won a tight game 30-22. The North squad got off to a fast start as they carried a 24-7 lead into halftime. By the middle of the third quarter, their lead grew to a 30-7 lead. The South team made started chipping away, eventually making it a one score game with 6:37 remaining on the clock. The North squad managed to run most of that time off the clock, but the South AllStars got the ball back with 30 seconds left on the clock. The buzzer sounded as the South quarterback heaved a prayer down the sideline. The ball was caught, but the North squad made the tackle at the 38-yard line. Coach Sid Maxwell of Lambert High School led the North All-Stars while Coach Terry Crowder of Chattahoochee directed the South squad. The North Georgia Falcons' Mike Randle won the Offensive Player of the Game. Johns Creek's Denny Victor won the Defensive Player of the Game. Love the One You're With

M

y husband and I have been married for 19 years. Unfortunately, about 15 of those 19 years were difficult! He even wrote a book about our marriage called, "Before You Wed, Read This!" by Darryl Cobbin. Even still, we had quite a few bright spots during those years, like the births of our 3 children. To improve our relationship, we saw a marriage counselor. One of the most important questions our therapist asked was, "If you met your husband again now, would he possess all of the qualities you would look for in a spouse?" I had to admit, he was everything that I was looking for in a mate with just a few qualities that I didn't like .

Later, I discovered that there were ways in which our subconscious mind cultivated our conflict. As a child, I observed my parent's relationship; my Dad was extremely dominant and my Mom was extremely docile. As young girl I remember telling myself, "I will never be a doormat to my husband!" One of the duties of the subconscious mind is to act out the ideas and concepts that come in through the conscious mind, and this happens with or without your permission. As a result of this repetitive thought, a concept developed in my subconscious mind. As a wife, my subconscious mind began to act out or protect me from the dominance of my husband, causing me to act out irrationally. If ever he looked like he was being dominant, whether it was the case or not, I attacked him like an angry Chihuahua and I truly believed he had the problem. I was unaware that this concept was playing out in our relationship and it was a constant source of conflict in our marriage . Some relationships are better to walk away from, but many are worth saving. If the one you love has all the qualities you're looking for, find what works for you. Remember, it is not always your partner's fault. Accept that there may be things that you both unknowingly bring to the table which are locked in the subconscious mind. And most of all, keep trying!

id you know? If you sit si x or more hours a day, you 're 40 times more likely to die in the nex t 15 years than someone who sits just three hours a day.

Many health ex perts such as Dr. James Levine of the prestigious Mayo Clinic, claim that sitting all day is as detrimental for you as smoking! Dr. Levine, who treats obesity, notes that working out once a day won't undo the damage caused by sitting all day, and that sitting is bad for you --whether you 're obese or thin. When you sit: 1. Your metabolism slows 2. Insulin effectiveness drops 3. Fat and cholesterol rise

Further, staying in any one position for a long period of time isn't good for your body either. Recommendations from the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health include the following tips for your workplace: • Move more • Stand at your desk • Hold standing and walking meetings At home, exercise during TV commercials and move around frequently if you 're reading or working. And if you do have to sit for a long stretch of time, take my advice and fidget. Wiggle in your chair. Flex your feet and tap them on the floor. Stretch your hands in the air.

A recent study led by a researcher at Louisiana State University's Pennington Biomedical Research Cetner estimates that two years may be added to the life expectancy of those who reduce sitting to less than three hours a day. Other research shows that sitting for too long can cause physioligical changes in metabolism.

How Daily Habits Impact Your Sleep

C

hronic lack of sleep has been linked to health problems such as obesity, diabetes, depression and cardiovascular disease.

Dr. Lisa Johnston, medical director of Northside Hospital 's Sleep Disorders Center, lists some simple solutions to help you catch more Zzzz 's and improve your health.

1 Limit technology.

Studies show that chronic light from TVs, cell phones and other electronic devices decreases your brain's production of melatonin, the hormone that promotes sleep onset. Avoid any source of bright light in the evenings and make your bedroom a technology-free zone.

LOSE WEIGHT

IS] STOP SMOKING

Limit caffeine. Consuming too much caffeine can prevent a restful night of sleep. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends limiting caffeine intake to about 300400 milligrams per day (about three to four 8-ounce cups of coffee), and avoiding it all together in the late afternoon and evening.

3 Watch your weight.

Being overweight can impact your sleep by affecting your breathing and your ability to get comfortable. Exercising increases your metabolism and tires yourself out for bed. If you work out at night, finish at least three hours before bedtime.

ADVANCE CAREER ALLEVIATE FEARS

If sleep problems persist for a few weeks, it is important to talk to a health care provider, as you may have a sleep disorder. Call the Northside Hospital Sleep Disorders Centers - at Atlanta, Cherokee and Forsyth- at (404) 8518135. How to Tell Your Life Story ost of us make grocery lists and weekend to-do lists. Many of us have recently written down our New Year's resolutions. But too few of us make what is likely the most important list of our lives. At our office, we call it a "life book," giving it the gravitas it deserves . When we mention it to clients, they 're often flabbergasted they haven't created something so easy and essential. It's a notebook - or just a piece of paper - that contains pertinent information a loved one would need to know in order to take care of you (or your family) in case of a serious accident, illness, emergency, or death . To see the value of a life book, ask yourself: If something happened to my spouse or other close family member, could I answer these questions:

1. Where is my spouse's will?

and Secrets

• Wills and trusts: Location of documents, executor name and contact information

• Contact list: If something happens to you, who should be contacted (and in what order) to support your spouse or partner?

• Online information: Logins for important accounts (i.e., credit cards, bank accounts, 401[k] accounts), passwords to log in to your home computer and for Facebook and other sites you visit often. (This is important not just for access to these sites and accounts, but also to quickly ensure their security.)

• To·do list: Set priorities on what you want done if something happens to you. For example, "Call the people from my support list first. Then, call my financial advisor and insurance agent. Be sure the dogs are taken care of. They need two cups of food twice a day.... "

• Keys and such: Where to find an extra set of car and house keys,

2. How many life insurance policies did my spouse (or parent) have,

alarm codes to homes and safes, etc . An e-version of your life book is fine, but we encourage clients to use a cloud-based back-up system like Dropbox or Google Docs regularly .

and what if I don't know about one?

3. I know my spouse kept our trust documents in the safe deposit box, but where 's the key? If you can't readily answer these questions, make it a priority to create a life book. Here's a basic guide for what to include:

• Bank information: Name of financial institution, account number(s) and holder(s), passwords, safe deposit location(s) and approved entrants

• Investment information: Account locations and numbers, financial advisor contact information

Next time you jot down "eggs, milk, bananas" on the back of an envelope before a grocery run, think about taking a few minutes to make a list of account numbers, passwords, and where you keep your important documents . And put your life book in a secure location- then tell someone where it is. Just as a grocery list doesn't do you any good if you leave it sitting on the kitchen counter, a life book is only useful if your spouse, partner, family member or trusted friend knows where to find it when it's needed .

• Insurance information: Policy location and numbers, amounts, insurer, name of agent and contact information

Technology · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · : Tablets Cannibalize PC's

Pc

sales are on the decline (5% d rop from 2011 to 2012) while tablet sales are on the rise (double-digit increase during same period). It has been predicted that tablet sales will supersede laptop sales in 2013.

What does this mean for you and me?

1

Tablets will slowly be known for content creation rather than just content consumption devices.

2

There will be more competition and more options which will drive a variety of innovative solutions and pricing for businesses and individuals.

3

Application developers will be forced to create more efficient and effective coding which can run on lower powered tablet devices.

4

Processor and battery technology will extinguish the need to be close by a power outlet... .... all day battery powered production will be the norm moving fo r ward.

5

Applications as you know them will increasingly NOT be found on the shelf at Best Buy or Office Max but rather will be purchased directly online and will likely be on a subscription model (either monthly or annual payment for updates) which can be shared on all your devices (even your traditional PC).

If you have not made the leap thus far then it is likely you will replace your office laptop or home laptop with a tablet that has a connected keyboard and touch pad like a laptop. As far as production app's are concerned, there are plenty of Microsoft Office like applications which will allow for word processing and spreadsheet creation and editing. Even Microsoft is said to be developing Microsoft Office app's for iOS and Android. Ultimately, this trend of tablet sales outpacing PC sales is a good thing for consumers. Tablets are light weight, have great battery life and are reasonably priced to fit nearly any budget. In addition, the software is traditionally much less expensive.

Purge! Purge! Purge! Resist the temptation to force old items into a new look! Generally, the rules that work for your closet work for your home. Lamps with outdated shades will ruin your look. New, updated lamps are the easiest path to establishing a stylish new space.

So, clear the deck of all those old little things, and replace them with a few large accessories. Remember, "Less is More" and color is BACK! Have fun playing with your house!

Feel free to mix the old with the new. If you have lovely fine antique or antique reproduction pieces with warm wood patina, they can be beautifully combined with some new items for a new fresh influence. You can never go wrong investing in quality, timelessly designed anchor pieces. They literally stand the test of time. You can change wallpaper, lamps, and accessories around them to keep them current. Classics ROCK! But, it's up to you to make sure they don't feel like your grandmother's! You can build a beautiful, functional, sustainable room around your classic pieces; one that will exude updated quality with a splash of trend.

Make Your Home LOOK Like a Million! alue is top of mind for many homeowners, particularly as the housing market begins to show early signs of recovery. Renovations and remodeling can play a critical role in both increasing the value of a home and ensuring that it stands out to potential buyers. Here are some affordable home improvements for increasing the overall value of a home without breaking the budget.

V

1 Reface Kitchen Cabinets·

Kitchen updates are among the smartest remodeling projects when it comes to "upping" the resale value of a home. Consider refacing existing cabinets or replacing tarnished pulls and knobs with new hardware.

2

Improve the Lighting· Light fixtures are another simple enhancement that does not require a major investment.

3

Freshen up a Fan· An updated ceiling fan can give a room a more contemporary feel. Improving an existing fan is simpler than homeowners might think and does not have to come at a high price.

4 Hang More Mirrors·

It sounds simple, but the addition of a mirror on any wall adds depth and light to a room, making even the smallest space seem larger.

5

Break Out the Paint Brushes· Applying a couple coats of paint can make a remarkable difference and is always a low-cost, high-return project.

6 7

Refinish Your Appliances· An appliance refinisher can re-enamel the surfaces of appliances covering up any out-dated colors. Spruce up Your Home's Exterior· Don't overlook simple exterior renovations that can add substantial worth and attract more buyers. A freshly-mowed lawn, a clean, even walkway and a few well-placed bushes can make a huge difference.

Following some or all of these simple and relatively inexpensive home improvements can not only add to your homes value but also help it sell faster too! 6290 Abbotts Bridge Road, Suite 606, Johns Creek, Georgia 30097 678.889.9548 I JohnsCreekCPA.com
