Community 2nd Annual CureNFwithJack Golf Classic

A

pril 15 was a big day for CureNFwithJack and for all those who attended the 2nd Annual CureNFwithJack Golf Classic at the Alpharetta Athletic Club. About 120 golfers and over 30 volunteers came out for a beautiful day on the course. Players imbibed on margaritas from Twisted Taco, beer from the Tilted Kilt, and had a shot of “Jack (Daniels) for Jack.” Generous sponsors including Kroger, Verizon, UPS, Howe Roofing, and Roasters made the day possible. The consensus seems to be that it was even bigger and better than last year! This year, CureNFwithJack announced BIG news at its reception. Due to this great community’s willingness to get involved and spread the word about Neurofibromatosis (“NF”), CureNFwithJack is now able to help sponsor investigators and researchers carefully selected by the Children’s Tumor Foundation, and importantly, will be sponsoring a NF physician’s conference in Washington, D.C. this fall. This is a goal that CureNFwithJack thought was years away, but because of the community’s generosity, that dream is being realized already, with the hope that these conferences will eventually bring about improvements in Jack’s life and the lives of all children affected by NF. Words cannot express the gratitude CureNFwithJack has for so many who have brought HOPE into the lives of these children and their families. Please feel free to learn more at www.curenfwithjack. com or contact beth@curenfwithjack.com

Medlock Bridge 5th Grader Advancing to National History Bee

F

oster Michaelis, an 11 year old 5th grader at Medlock Bridge Elementary in Johns Creek, will advance to the National History Bee in June at the Hyatt Regency Atlanta. He competed at the Atlanta Regional Finals in February and tied for third place, which secured him a spot in the national finals. Foster was the only elementary school-aged child to make it to the top 10. Students from elementary and middle schools around the state took an online regional qualifying exam to earn a spot in the competition. This year, for the first year ever, the National History Bee will host a special elementary division, in which Foster will compete against other students from around the country. Foster loves geography, sports, current events, video games and spending time with his brother Luke and sister Nora and his proud parents, Keri and Charlie.

e are so excited to be living (and dining) in North Fulton! In our suburban habitat, we are fortunate to have some of the finest dining experiences in the metro-Atlanta area right here, without having to drive to Buckhead or Midtown. As we set up new distribution points for THE hub in Roswell this past month, we had the privilege of dining at several popular restaurants in the quaint area of historic Roswell – a hidden gem off the beaten path. Here, we’ve highlighted a few of those delectable dishes, along with a few favorites of our own from North Fulton. Bon appétit!

Schools Independence High School Essay Winner

I

ndependence High School sophomore, Sebastian Andrade, won a $50 cash prize for his submission in the Laws of Life Essay Contest, sponsored, in part, by the Rotary Clubs of Georgia. The Georgia Rotary Districts Character Education Program offers the Laws of Life Essay Contest as a character education and literacy program for high school students, grades 9 – 12. The contest asks students to select a Law of Life or maxim (such as “Honesty is the best policy,” or “To give is better than to receive”), and to write a personal essay explaining how the Law of Life applies to the student’s life. The program challenges students to reflect upon core values such as perseverance, generosity, courage and compassion, and it rewards those students who are willing to take a stand for their beliefs. Sebastian was awarded his prize and read his winning essay at the Alpharetta Rotary Breakfast, held at the Alpharetta Presbyterian Church. Among those in attendance were Sebastian’s mother, Maria Andrade, his English Language Arts teacher, Ms. Linda Legros and Jason Binder, the Independence High School Alpharetta Rotary Coordinator.

River Eves Students Take “Up Close” Look at Marine Life

O

n April 13th, fifth grade students in Roswell’s River Eves Elementary School talented and gifted (TAG) program recently concluded their study of Georgia’s Golden Coast by dissecting starfish, perch, and squid. All of these special creatures live in the oceans near our Georgia coast and the students had a fantastic—and challenging—time trying to discover the different parts of the creatures and what makes them work. They found that some of the circulatory systems and other parts were quite different than ours! River Eves Elementary is located at 9000 Eves Road in Roswell, Georgia. The school has earned numerous accolades, including the Reward School Title for Highest-Performing Title I School in 2012 (top 5 percent). River Eves was the only elementary school in Fulton County to receive this award.

Schools Northwood Kindergartners RAP!

N

orthwood Kindergartners are using video conferencing technology to interact with other students around the US in a National Education Association program called Read Around the Planet (RAP). They shared a “Three Billy Goats Gruff” Reader’s Theater activity with a kindergarten class in Columbia, South Carolina and told facts about our school and community. They conferenced with a school in Western Pennsylvania to share information about dinosaurs and Abraham Lincoln. And, they have connected with a class in Virginia where each class made riddles about community helpers and the other class had to guess the helper. Other grades are also using videoconferencing, connecting with students in Ghana and Japan. This sophisticated video conferencing technology connects our students in Roswell and Alpharetta with students all around the world. It helps fulfill the school’s vision: “We will be a school of global thinkers who connect learning with future success.”

HBMS’s “Exceptional Week”

A

t the end of March, students and staff at Holcomb Bridge Middle School (HBMS) completed a week of exceptional activities, celebrating the recent prestigious achievement of becoming one of only a few Georgia National Lighthouse Schools to Watch. This title identifies HBMS as a high-performing school that is academically excellent, developmentally responsive and socially equitable. During the celebration of Exceptional Children’s Week, HBMS students took part in “lighthouse” academic activities, including creating a lighthouse on a Cartesian Plane; learning how lighthouses work; reading in both English and foreign language classes about what it takes to be a Lighthouse School; and mapping the locations of Georgia’s Lighthouse schools, so they could see just how few schools in the area have gained this distinction. “HBMS will serve as a mentor and model for other schools at the same time that it continues to further its own growth,” said Principal Joy Schroerlucke. And, as the event ended with the HBMS drum line, Schroerlucke added, “Your futures are so bright, you need shades!” Every student received a new pair of sunglasses.

M

Give mom what she really

ayor David Belle recently visited Legacy Community Academy’s first grade class to kick off a new experiential learning program where Community Helpers personally interact with young students to show the importance of being a community helper. Fire Station #3 firefighters showed the students how they are always ready to respond to an emergency. The students visited Station #3 on Westside Parkway and during their visit an actual emergency call came in. They learned that they always need to be prepared to respond when our community needs them. They also got saw a firefighter in full gear, toured the fire station and explored the fire engine. At an early age, the class is learning how all community helpers are vital to the “community” at large and if one part of the community is missing or does not work well, the entire community suffers. These students also were thankful for their community helpers, are willing to show their appreciation to them and are praying for them. Legacy Community Academy (LCA) is an accredited, Christcentered academy, serving K–12th grade students, providing an intentional, creative and holistic approach to learning and leadership.

Health & Wellness The ABCDE’s of Melanoma Detection

M

elanoma is a malignant tumor that originates in melanocytes, the cells which produce the pigment melanin that colors our skin, hair, and eyes. The majority of melanomas are black or brown. However, some melanomas are skin-colored, pink, red, purple, blue or white. Most melanomas can be treated successfully if they are detected at an early stage. If melanoma is not detected at an early stage, it can spread to other parts of the body and is potentially a lethal form of cancer.

For many years, the early warning signs of melanoma have been identified by the acronym “ABCDE”.

Since most pigment cells are in the skin, most melanomas start on the skin. They can occur in the eye and rarely in the membranes of the nasal passages, oral and pharyngeal mucosa, vaginal and anal mucosa.

While the ABCDE rule helps detect many melanomas, there are a group of melanomas that do not manifest the ABCDE features. Recently, several melanoma specialists developed a new method of sight detection for skin lesions which could be melanoma.

Melanomas can arise from an existing mole or on normal skin. Anyone can get Melanoma.

A = Asymmetry B = Border C = Color D = Diameter E = Evolving

This new method of sight detection for skin lesions is based on the concept that these melanomas look different -- ie, “the ugly duckling” -- compared to surrounding moles. Thus, during skin self examination, patients and physicians should be looking for lesions that manifest the ABCDE’s AND for lesions that look different compared to surrounding moles. Doctors strongly suggest everyone have a yearly full body exam with a board certified dermatologist for the detection and treatment of all types of skin cancers.

erving Johns Creek for 10 years, Fitness Together (FT) is pleased to announce the relocation of their Johns Creek facility to the Addison Place Shops at 11705 Jones Bridge Road, located behind Bonefish Grill. Fitness Together has led the industry for 1-on-1 personal fitness training, whether for weight loss, toning and tightening muscles or simply working towards better health. And, while FT has helped hundreds of Johns Creek residents transform their health and their lives through personal training, they are now offering small group training as an additional service. With this new larger studio, FT is proud to announce the addition of their PACK small group personal training. PACK consists of 2-6 people working out at a time under the instruction of an FT trainer. The workouts are tough, but lots of fun and very effective. Russ Yeager, Owner of Fitness Together notes, “The two things we are hearing that our clients love most about PACK workouts are the relationships they are forming with other clients, and the cost, which is less than half the cost of 1 on 1 training. Starting April 29th, we are challenging Johns Creek neighbors to lose 2 sizes in 8 weeks with our PACK Great Jeans Challenge. amily owned and customer focused since 1955, Howard Brothers has opened its fourth location in Alpharetta at 5860 Gateway Drive (directly across the street from Slope’s BBQ), near the intersection of Hwy 9 and McFarland Road. Howard Brothers is very well known and respected in the outdoor power equipment world. Ask any commercial landscaper in Atlanta where they buy their mower or 2-cycle equipment, and you’ll likely hear them respond “Howard Brothers.” We’ve been looking to open a location in the Alpharetta market for a long time, and the opportunity opened up a few months ago. Howard Brothers only represents top lines in the industry. We believe in partnering with the best and most reliable brands that our customers need and want so that they can be more successful,” says owner John Howard. “It is an incredible market for us to move into,” says Tim Oliver, Howard Brothers, OPE General Manager. “In addition to our existing landscape customers in the area, we are equally excited about the huge number of homeowners in the area. Video game consoles to become TV set top box

I

t is estimated that more than half of US households play video games. In an effort to bridge the gap between gamers and non-gamers, video game console makers Microsoft and Sony are targeting news, weather, sports and entertainment lovers with a new way to consume content on demand. Microsoft and Sony will be releasing new versions of their gaming consoles this year (Xbox 720 and Sony PlayStation 4 respectively). These new consoles are designed to either pass through your cable providers channel guide and respective content from their set- top box or replace it entirely to become your all-in-one set-top box. This means that surfing channels will likely be more visual and not the excel spreadsheet style channel guide you have been forced to use for the last 10 years. Additionally, because these consoles are internet-connected and will support a web browser, you can simply flip from TV viewing to Googling for facts about a product or person (interactive TV here we come). It is rumored that the Xbox will also feature the ability to record or pause live TV, just like your DVR, so you do not miss a thing during your Internet fact-finding mission.

Another advantage to the combining of video game consoles and typical television devices is overcoming the problem that everyone faces at one time or another: the lost remote control. Thanks to advances in video gaming, you can now (with the right accessories – Xbox Kinect) wave your hand to sort and pick your favorite app or movie to play. No need for a standard remote control. If you hate having to find and fiddle with the multiple remotes for your gaming console, TV, DVD/Blu-ray, DVR and cable set-top box, then this could very well be your all-in-one entertainment console dream come true! Do not be surprised if you begin using your TV more like a PC or tablet, since this blurs the lines more than ever before.

Both manufacturers have agreed with the populous and understand that most of us cannot live without Apps. Most (if not all) of your favorite news, weather, sports and entertainment apps that you use on your smart phone or tablets will eventually be integrated into this all-inone set-top box. This means you can post to your favorite social media site via web browser or app through your television. Streaming content will abound via the most popular content consumption Apps like HuLu, YouTube, and of course, Netflix. And if that is not enough, then you can rent a DVD or Bluray (Playstation 4 only) disk and pop it in one or both consoles to consume content the oldfashioned way.

Food & Wine Mother’s Day Muffins

I

always look forward to Mother’s Day because it’s the one day that my daring boys make me something special for breakfast. The past few years have been the traditional pancakes. This year they are starting a new tradition and are making me Sugar Crusted Raspberry Muffins which is sure to pair very nicely with my Mother‘s Day Mimosa. The recipe is simple, easy and kid friendly to make: Sugar Crusted Raspberry Muffins (recipe from Real Simple) Ingredients 2 cups all-purpose flour 3/4 cup sugar 2 teaspoons baking powder 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted 3/4 cup whole milk 1 large egg 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 1/2 cups fresh raspberries Directions Heat oven to 400° F. Line a 12-cup muffin tin with paper liners or coat it with cooking spray, vegetable oil, or butter.

1

2

In a medium bowl, combine 1 3/4 cups of the flour, 1/2 cup of the sugar, the baking powder, and salt. Add the butter and combine. In a second bowl, whisk together the milk, egg, and vanilla. Gradually add the milk mixture to the flour mixture and stir until just combined; the batter will be lumpy. Toss the berries with the remaining flour in a bowl. Gently fold the berry mixture into the batter.

3

Fill each muffin cup 3/4 full. Sprinkle the batter with the remaining sugar. Bake for 17 to 20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of a muffin comes out clean. Transfer pan to a wire rack to cool for 10 minutes. Serve warm. Tip: Try this muffin recipe with blackberries or blueberries instead of raspberries. Or, use a combination of different berries.

Granite, Marble or Quartz?

S

tone surfaces are expected in today’s décor. Whether updating yesterday’s look or completing new construction, these elegant beauties will enhance your home. Here are a few facts you should know before tackling your next project:

Don’t leave money on the table Trust an agent with a proven track record of protecting your equity!

Granite, quarried from the mountains of Brazil, Italy, the U.S., India, and other countries around the world, is one of the most popular natural stones on the market. Available in a striking array of colors, granite’s durability and longevity make it ideal for kitchen countertops and other heavily used surfaces, including table tops and floors. While some synthetic surfaces scratch easily and melt under hot cookware, granite resists heat. Granite is also one of the most bacteria-resistant kitchen surfaces, and it is not affected by citric acid, coffee, tea, alcohol, or wine. It is also nearly impossible to scratch, and with proper cleaning, will not stain under normal use. And, because of its exceptional strength, granite is also well suited for exterior applications such as cladding, paving, and curbing. Marble is found in the mountainous regions of Canada, Italy, Germany, Spain, the U.S., and other countries worldwide. Because of its beauty and elegance, marble is a popular choice for countertops, floors, foyers, fireplace facings and hearths, walls, and windowsills. Marble is limestone that has been subjected to great pressure and heat, which has changed its structure to a crystalline, sugary texture. It is generally whitish, sometimes translucent, with some veining or color provided by other minerals. Marble adds a sophisticated element to your home, and its wonderful appearance, superior engineering characteristics, and ease of maintenance make it a natural choice for floors, wall coverings, table tops, and bathroom walls, floors, vanity tops, tub decks, and showers. If you want the beauty of a stone countertop, without having to worry about bothersome maintenance like sealing, a Quartz countertop may be the best choice for you. Quartz countertops are made from 93% natural quartz, creating a stain resistant, scratch resistant, and non-porous surface. It is available in a wide variety of colors and has more color consistency than granite. Quartz is very hard (with a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale; a diamond is the hardest at 10). It is also cleaner, safer and has greater consistency than natural stone which is veined and prone to flaws.

2013 Home Trends

I

n keeping up with the hottest trends and runway fashions, I just attended the Spring Furniture Market where the top buyers go to see the latest in home design and furniture trends.

Color is back and bold patterns are on the rise for chair options, great pillow pops, ottomans, and accessories. The color of the year for 2013 is Emerald Green and yes, it definitely has something to do with “Oz”. This color is everywhere in the new furniture lines but remember a little goes a long way! The design “glue” with bold new colors is that these great colors are found on classic and transitional pieces. So you can use one fabulous piece to make a beautiful statement as a main piece in a room! Today, more and more people are enjoying their homes with family, pets, entertaining friends, and just relax and live! The furniture designers have listened--most fabrics offered now are pet friendly, stain resistant, and very luxurious to compliment our design tastes. The largest 2013 trend I’ve seen is Relaxed, Beach Inspired Living: beautiful lighting incorporating, coral, colorful seashells, and washed wood accents from old wine barrels to wooden bobbers; upholstery offerings of washed linens, colorful ocean washed prints and fun colorful stripes; wood furniture pieces with options of grey or pickled washes in stain or handpainted soft French finishes; and sleek transitional woods showing the rich graining. The industrial vibe was a hot trend and will show its age in 5 years. Let me just say that a converted industrial trolley cart into a cocktail table is a really great conversation piece that will be enjoyed for years, but try to resist buying everything in that same design.
