Immaculata’s unique Marching Band, with its tribute to the school’s 50th anniversary entitled “We Are Spartans,” is undefeated this season. It won all seven competitions, including not only the US Bands State, but also the National Competitions. It is the first time in the school’s Marching Band stellar history that the band was undefeated. At Nationals, held at Met Life Stadium in East Rutherford, Immaculata outscored 16 other teams from around the country. Amazingly, the top three bands were only separated by a .025 of a point. “We were stunned because the competition was so strong,” reports associate Band Director Frank Amato. “We were up against the best of the best from around the country.” Amato continues, “All year our mantra was this: success only comes ahead of work in the dictionary. These two wins were a fruition of the band members’

dedication and hours of work. The students shed lots of tears of joy, for they were so excited to have achieved such an amazing feat.” Drum Major Dan Eckels of Bridgwater, one of the Drum Majors, who received the band’s award adds, “It was so unbelievable. Having seen the other bands perform, we knew that we were among greatness. I was so proud to represent the band at the awards presentation and felt honored on behalf of Spartans,

past, present, and future.” Created by the school’s music department and design staff, the show presents the Spartans as time-honored warriors with music from the movie, Gladiator, transitioning over the ages with music from Spartacus, a ballet by Khachaturian, and emerging as faith-filled Immaculata Spartans, accompanied by the triumphant music of David Holsinger’s Sinfonia Voci. The concept demonstrates how the values and legacy of the ancient Spartans have been passed to the current Immaculata Spartans. Commemorating the 50th anniversary and the tradition of excellence instilled over the past decades, gold is emphasized in costuming, flags, and shields; the music is enhanced by dynamic choreography and inspiring narration. “The band members and staff have worked hard,” Nancy Bonham, faculty member and percussion instructor says, “to capture the power and emotion of this amazing achievement of 50 years and we are thrilled with the reaction from our student body, faculty, families, and alumni.” Sums up Marching Band Director Ed Webber, “Our hope is that this show is one element helping Immaculata to launch itself into another great 50 years.”
