Congratulations, 2013 Graduates

On June 20th the 51st graduating class of Bridgewater-Raritan High School took to the turf field to receive their diplomas. The outdoor event featured speeches by Class of 2013 President Marisa Ruskan and Class Speaker Mayank Kapoor. The 2013 graduating class consisted of 667 students. Right: Graduation caps soar at the end of the B-R High School graduation ceremony on June 20th. Together as one for a final photo, the 2013 Graduating Class of St. Ann School prepares to branch out to their new schools. With 100% earning acceptance at the school of their choice, 12 students will attend Immaculata, one each will attend St. Joseph’s, Mount Saint Mary, DelBarton and Seton Hall Prep, and six will attend their local public high school this fall. With the shift of their tassles, the mission of St. Ann School came full circle as diplomas were conferred on the Class of 2013. In his homily, Fr. James DeFillipps, School Chaplain, reflected on the young men and women and their growth at St. Ann’s and how he and his fellow faculty have been blessed by the opportunity to watch them grow academically, spiritually and morally into twenty-two unique and talented young people with great potential. Multiple students were honored; in all, nearly $4,000 was awarded in scholarships and bonds, recognizing students for academic performance and service to others. Seven students – Ian Creelman, Samantha Fama, Andrew Fontanetta, Clarisa Gorky, Johan Lyons, Seung Oh and Bridget Reinhart -- received the Presidential Education Award in recognition of Outstanding Academic Achievement and proudly displayed gold chords denoting their achievement. Jonah Lyons and Bridget Reinhart received scholarship awards from the Knights of Columbus and Mariana Arango and John Rech received scholarship awards donated by The Bongovi Family in memory of beloved family members. Samantha Fama and Ian Creelman graduated with First and Second Honors respectively. Each of the graduates was “pinned,” formally inaugurating them into the St. Ann School Alumni Association. Sr. Gloria Caglioti, former principal who retired from teaching at the close of this school year, recalled welcoming many of these students as little four and five year olds. “We are sad to see them go, but know that we have prepared them well to live out the second half of our Mission – ‘Leave and Serve.’ We’ll watch with pride as they excel in their new schools, just as we have seen our past graduates excel. We are proud to call them Alumni of St. Ann School.”

Honoring Bridgewater World War II Servicemen Proves Difficult Task

A sign at Chimney Rock Park in Martinsville lists the men from Martinsville who served in World War II. By Bruce Doorly bdoorly@verizon.net Over the last two years, The BReeze has run many stories about local men who fought in World War II. While this newspaper serves both Bridgewater and Raritan, the large majority of these articles have been about Raritan. Readers have given much critical acclaim to these stories, but there has often been the question, “What about Bridgewater?” Why does Raritan, which today is just 1/7th the population of Bridgewater, get most of the World War II stories? While Bridgewater and Raritan have many similarities, there is an amazing difference between the

towns in the information that was saved from World War II. There are several reasons why Raritan’s World War II stories have survived. One – Town Structure/Population - During the World War II era, 1941-1945, Raritan had the same population as Bridgewater. Raritan was technically part of Bridgewater, and was actually the core of Bridgewater. The total population of Bridgewater including Raritan was 10,000 – of this number half were in the densely populated Raritan. The other half were scattered among various sections of Bridgewater - Martinsville, Bradley Gardens, Finderne, and Green Knoll.

Residents of Raritan knew each other intimately. When a Raritan boy in World War II was killed, most everyone knew him or a family member. In fact, Raritan even had an informal chain of communication that went around town immediately when one was killed in action. And in the subsequent years the close community of Raritan was not likely to forget that soldier. In Bridgewater, the death of a soldier from Martinsville may not be known in Bradley Gardens. Two - Raritan had its own weekly newspaper The Raritan Valley News which was very well read during the war years. They reported the heroics and tragedies of the local men. The war news of Bridgewater soldiers was reported, but Raritan news was its main focus. Three - Raritan tavern owner Tony Orlando collected hundreds of photos of “Our Boys Overseas” that he displayed on the walls of his tavern. He also sent these Raritan soldiers hundreds of packages. The boys, in turn, wrote him over 500 letters. The photos and letters survive to this day and can be found in the Raritan library and on the internet. No similar

Bridgewater source exists.

Four – Many people have chosen to live in Raritan for their entire life. Thus, when sources are needed for

Local 825 of the International Union of Operating Engineers selected Antonella Gini of Bridgewater as one of six scholarship recipients honored for their civic-mindedness and commitment to academic excellence. The scholarship program is open to the children and grandchildren of Local 825’s members, and this year, program administrators awarded six scholarships valued at $10,000 ($2,500 annually over four years) and three one-time grants of $1,500 to promising high school seniors from throughout New Jersey. Antonella, family member of Hugo Gini, attends Bridgewater-Raritan High School. In the fall, she will start her collegiate career at the University of Scranton. Antonella plans to enroll in the five-year Master of Occupational Therapy Program. After completion, she endeavors to practice occupational therapy, specializing in pediatrics.

The 2013 Counseling and Therapy Services annual scholarship was awarded to seniors Monica Galasso, and an honorarium to Emily Ousouljoglou by Dr. Barbara Ronca, LCSW at the Bridgewater-Raritan High School Awards ceremony in June. The award is presented to a student who is an all around average student who is accepted into a social work or psychology program and who will pursue school social work, psychology or some form of direct counseling. Applicants had to submit letters of recommendation, transcripts and an essay stating their reasons for consideration. Monica, accepted to Rutgers University to study psychology, wanted to be a ballerina or rock star as a child. However through the years of varied experiences, her goals shifted to “helping people and making a difference in their lives.” She hopes to combine criminal justice with psychology to help children and teens who are in the court system. Emily’s story touches the heart. As a toddler, she overcame a life threatening diagnosis and now she will be pursuing a social work degree at Misericordia University and help children with special health needs.

Somerset County Expands Recycling Program to Include Businesses Effective June 2013, the Somerset County Recycling Division will begin picking up recyclable items from county businesses wishing to use county recycling services. Somerset County businesses that would like to have recyclables picked up by the county should contact the Somerset County Recycling Center at 732-469-3363 or recycling@co.somerset.nj.us. Businesses participating in the program will be able to recycle newspapers, corrugated cardboard, chipboard, glass containers, aluminum containers, steel and tin cans, plastic bottles and containers (#1 - #7), pizza boxes, envelopes, writing and copy paper, phone books, catalogs, clear plastic clamshell containers and more. The Mandatory Source Separation and Recycling Act of 1987 requires that New Jersey residential, commercial and institutional sectors separate recyclable material from regular trash. Somerset County businesses are urged to take this opportunity to work cooperatively with county and local officials in reaching compliance with all recycling requirements. Not only is such an approach critical to Somerset County reaching its state-mandated recycling goal of 50 percent, but it fosters good relationships among local officials, the business sector, employees and the public.

Foran Financial Group Hosts Successful Food Drive at Patriots Stadium Foran Financial Group hosted an enjoyable evening at Patriots Stadium on June 14. Friends and family were treated to baseball and fireworks. Everyone graciously contributed non-perishable items. As a result a generous donation was made to the Food Bank Network of Somerset County.

On May 14th, members of the Bridgewater Garden Club (BGC) and Harry Cross of Morganville Flower Farm presented a combined donation of $400 to the Keyport Garden Club to help in restoration of extensive storm damage suffered by the Rain Garden plantings on the Keyport Waterfront as a result of Super Storm Sandy. The BGC gifted $200 to Keyport, which was matched by Mr. Cross with an additional $200. Lois Farina Reilly, President of the Keyport Garden Club, accepted the gift with gratitude on behalf of her club and the entire Borough of Keyport. Following the presentation at Morganville Flower Farm, Reilly took BGC members on a tour of various other Keyport gardens, and also showed them some of the damage suffered by businesses and residences in town.

Have you noticed the yellow sign and green banners around the Green Knoll section of Bridgewater? We are looking for volunteer firefighters, (male & female). I am asking residents to talk to your neighbors and let them know that we are hurting for members. We know it takes time to do what we do and some of you have told us that you don’t have the time, but we have families and jobs too. We manage to fit in the time to answer the calls. We are there for you. No matter how involved it is. I, Chief Vitale, would like to make you this offer. We will give you a pager, turnout gear and let you ride to all the calls you can make at your leisure. You can’t go into a burning building or extricate someone from a vehicle, but you will get the feeling you’ve done something worthwhile and most of all made someone else feel good that you were there to help. You will be under no obligation. No training. No pressure. Just come and see what it’s all about. You can do this for 3 months and see how it feels. If you change your mind either way, at least I know you tried. All you have to do is give me a call. Please at least give it a shot. 908-707-4128. You can speak directly to me at 908-872-6255. Thank You, Chief Jim Vitale Jr., Green Knoll Fire Co.

Dental Byte HPV and Oral Cancer

By now most people understand that there is a risk of oral cancer after infection with HPV (Humanpapilloma virus). How is HPV transmitted? For sure it is transmitted sexually, but can also be transmitted mouth to mouth and vertically to a baby through an infected mother. It is due to the many modes of transmission and risks that young teens are now being vaccinated- before they become sexually active. As dentists, we are checking our patients for oral cancer by visual as well as more in depth screening methods (Velscope, Vizilite). Smoking and alcohol use increases oral cancer as well. The prognosis for early oral cancer is fairly good, but once it spreads in the oral cavity or to nearby lymph nodes, the prognosis worsens rapidly. Play it safe…practice good habits and have regular oral cancer screenings at your dentist. Yours in good Oral Health, Dr. DeStefano, and Dr. Raziano “Like” us on Facebook

Bridgewater Scout Earns Bronze Award

Victoria Schenone

Victoria Schenone of Bridgewater, is the first scout in Troop 60043 to earn her Bronze Award and was recognized for this accomplishment at an Ice Cream Social sponsored by the Girls Scouts of America in May at Eisenhower Intermediate School. To earn this award, Victoria volunteered her time at the St Hubert’s Animal Shelter where she and other members of her troop prepared posters to bring awareness to the pet adoption opportunities at the shelter. Booktalks

by Sharanya Pulapura The Innocent by David Baldacci - There’s no better company on a lazy summer day than a good book, and no book quite does the job as well as a fastpaced thriller. Prolific mystery writer David Baldacci’s recent series-opener The Innocent is a great summer read. Its rip roaring plotline makes it easy to finish in one sitting, but its characters stay with the reader long after the story is over. Protagonist Will Robie is a cold-hearted hitman — in his line of work, mistakes are not an option. So when one of Robie’s missions goes horribly wrong and he refuses to kill his target, he finds himself in the middle of a situation more disastrous than he could have ever imagined. On the run from his traitorous handler, Robie crosses paths with a brilliant and determined young orphan named Julie Getty, whose parents’ murderer seems mysteriously linked to Robie’s pursuer. Following a series of murders and betrayals, Robie is assigned to a top secret case of national security that has even the most experienced federal agents perplexed. Although Robie has always preferred to operate on his own, as the attempts on his life and the lives of people around him increase to terrifying levels, he must join forces with Julie to solve the case and protect the lives of the innocent. The Innocent is an exhilarating page turner that keeps the reader guessing right up until its satisfying conclusion. Fans of Will Robie can continue to read about his adventures in the recently published sequel, The Hit.

Young Artists Display Their Work - Students at the JCC

Blaustein Early Childhood Center proudly welcomed parents and guests to their annual Art Show in May. This year’s theme centered around Judaic heritage and culture, with each class selecting a specific theme to inspire their projects. The beautifully decorated walls featured the Jerusalem Skyline, Noah’s Ark, the Tu B’Shvat ecological celebration and more. Above: Debbie, Hailey and Joshua Baron gather around the 3-year-old class’ depiction of Jerusalem. Joshua, a student in the 4-year-old class, and his classmates each created a colorful “doll” of themselves to place in front of the class’ illustration of the Western Wall. As a creative touch, the students were able to “price” their paintings; the amounts ranged from $1 to $1 million! The students raised nearly $400 which was allocated to The JCC Scholarship Fund. The Art Show took more than six weeks to plan, create, and finalize, ultimately resulting in a charming display of dedication and creativity by the students.

Nelson Foundation Announces 2013 Scholarship Winners

BRHS Scholarship Winners are (L-R): Sarah Loeffler and Jaime Bartolett. Submitted photo On June 5th, The Kimberly A. Nelson Foundation, Inc. presented its annual scholarships to Jaime Bartolett and Sarah Loeffler, seniors at Bridgewater-Raritan High School. The $1,000 awards were presented during the annual Choir Dinner at the Bridgewater Manor. As part of the scholarship’s requirements recipients must be active in the high school’s choral groups and musical theater productions. In addition, those receiving the award must demonstrate a commitment to academic excellence and community service. During their respective high school careers Jaime and Sarah have been members of the high school’s Women’s Ensemble, Chamber/Symphonic Choir, Glee Club and Lorelei. Jaime has been an ensemble performer in the high school’s musical productions of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and Godspell and was most recently seen in the lead role of Elle Woods in Legally Blonde-The Musical. Sarah has been a part of four shows on the BRHS stage, most recently as spunky exercise queen Brooke Wyndham in Legally Blonde-The Musical. Sarah has also been awarded the National Choral award and a BRHS Drama Club award. Both students are actively involved in

serving their community. Jaime has been a camp counselor for the North Branch Park Commission as well as serving on SHARE (Student Help and Resistance Education), volunteering for the Interfaith Hospitality Network and various soup kitchens. She has also been a Girl Scout for 12 years. Jaime plans on attending Manhattan Marymount College as an Acting BFA major. Sarah has volunteered her talents by performing in nursing homes with her voice class, and participating in programs like National Honor Society and the PE partners gym program. Other favorite volunteer opportunities include the United Way coat drive and the Somerset County Special Olympics. In the fall, Sarah will be attending Ithaca College as a double major in Music Education and Music Performance. She hopes to eventually become a Music Therapist and work alongside children with special needs. Peter Donahue, an AP English teacher and director of a number of the high school’s musicals said of the recipients, “I worked with Jaime on Godspell (2012) and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (2011), and she was always an indispensable contributor, no matter the size of her part. I’ve seen Jaime encourage younger

cast members with the patience and love of a big sister. She also seeks to add to every production in terms of creativity.” On Sarah he said, “I worked with Sarah on Godspell (2012), Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (2011) and Thoroughly Modern Millie (2010). Every year when she came back for auditions, John and I were happy to see her because we knew we could depend on her to put forth 100%, and to be a role model for the other students. She’s the kind of student you wish you could take credit for, and say proudly that you were an influence on her--but you know that it’s more likely she’s had a positive influence on you.” Joan Aniano who directed both girls in the 2013 production of Legally Blonde-The Musical said, “Since her freshman year, Sarah has displayed a passion for music and theatre. Her focus and talent in “Millie” was unprecedented, and she has continued to grow and mature into an incredible senior. In rehearsals, Sarah was a true leader for everyone around her, constantly memorizing and coming in prepared for scene work and choreography. She has so much care for the rehearsal process and final product, and truly represents this award.” “Jaime has stood out as a leader and role model for the short two years I have known her. Her preparedness and creativity in rehearsals was not only refreshing, but extremely sophisticated. Somerville Elks Recognize Middle School ‘Scholar Citizens’ Eight area middle school students who are finishing the school year with strong academic records and noteworthy contributions to their schools and communities were recently recognized by the Somerville Elks Lodge #1068 with scholar citizen awards. This year’s awards were given in memory of Frank “Nap” Torpey, a community and civic leader whose contributions to the betterment of the Somerset County he loved were numerous. The students were selected by their principals and teachers for academic excellence, outstanding character and contributions to school and community. Each received $100 as well as certificates from the Elks and local state legislators. The award winning students from Bridgewater-Raritan Middle School are Trisha Kaundinya and Tony Colarusso. “In addition to their solid classroom work, these students showed the maturity, character and leadership that define good citizenship,” said Somerville Elks Scholarship Chairperson Ron Czajkowski. The Elks is a national service organization of men and women who work to promote and enhance the welfare of the communities where they are located through a variety of benevolent programs, including student scholarships, support for special needs children and events for military veterans. The Somerville Lodge, founded in 1903, is one of the oldest and largest in the state.

On June 10th, an audience of about 250 enjoyed young vocal talent showcased at Bridgewater-Raritan High School (BRHS) for the second Bridgewater Sing-Off competition sponsored by the Friends of the Kimberly A. Nelson Foundation, Inc. The show was modeled on the format of American Idol, and consisted of 13 auditioned solo and ensemble vocal artists who were all current BRHS or Somerset County Vo-Tech students. Prizes were awarded based on evaluations of three professional judges, each bringing their own perspective, but providing just the right mix of honest, experience-based feedback, coaching, and entertainment. The event provides unique opportunities for performance exposure and constructive feedback for talented local singers. A tradition has started, as witnessed by the popularity of the event with aspiring performers, alumni, and audience members. The evening was opened by Marisa DiPaolo and Melanie Fernandes, recipients of the 2012 Foundation scholarships. Ryan Guth, a local voice teacher and graduate of Westminster Choir College, served as the Master of

The judges were accomplished in musical theater, popular musicianship, songwriting and recording, and performance presentation: Gregg Barnes, a Tony Award-winning Broadway costume designer; Mark Conklin, an award-winning songwriter, producer, and performer based in NJ and Nashville; and Amy Toporek, a Broadway singer and actress who starred in the international tour of Hairspray. The judges were both serious and funny, putting the contestants at ease, giving advice about vocal quality, song choice, gestural dynamics, and wardrobe choices. They were very supportive of all the performers and were obviously impressed by the high level of performance talent and quality on stage. Performers ranged from freshmen to seniors singing solo and in groups, with live accompani-

ment or recorded music, but all with poise, talent, and enthusiasm. John Wilson, BRHS Choral Director, provided piano accompaniments for many of the performers. For the solo performers, third prize went to Cailin Marie who sang “Arms.” Second prize went to Marc Lovallo’s smooth rendition of “The Way You Look Tonight.” First prize went to VoTech freshman Myah Scavo and her powerful performance of “Who You Are.” For the ensemble performances, second prize was awarded to an original, harmonically exquisite parody “Can You Feel the Bromance Tonight” by Joshua Acampado, David Fernandes, and Dustin Zhao. First prize for ensembles went to Sarah Loeffler and Justin McBurney who sang “I’ll Cover You.” All the performances are available at http://www.youtube. com/channel/UCnuYscAMjJr90oFeTWbhLQ?feature=watch/

Bridgewater Teen Raises Money for Ugandan Girls Schooling

L-R: Debbie Rokosny, Grace McGeown, and Pastor Todd Buurstra of North Branch Reformed Church, during the check presentation on June 9. Photo/Linda Mayerik When Grace McGeown heard about the Sacred Heart Secondary School Fundraising Project this spring, she knew she needed to help. Grace learned about the school from Bridgewater resident Debbie Rokosny who taught at the school as part of a six week teacher exchange program in the summer of 2012. Sacred Heart Secondary School is a government run all-girls school. While primary education in Uganda is free, secondary schooling is only free in theory due to a lack of economic resources. Beyond limited classroom seats, fees to cover tuition, uniforms, shoes, books, other scholastic items, lunches, etc. require money many girls don’t have, especially those orphaned by Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) atrocities.

“Once I heard the story of the school girls, many of whom had been abducted by the LRA and used as sex slaves, I thought about how blessed I am to have such a good life,” said McGeown. “It bothered me that these young girls can’t get what we in this country take for granted. And I realized I needed to help.” After deciding to donate $300 of her savings from her allowance and part-time job to the Sacred Heart Secondary School, Grace so inspired her mother and grandmother that they offered to match her donation dollar for dollar. Grace gave an impassioned speech to the congregation at North Branch Reformed Church (NBRC) Bridgewater, one Sunday, and compassionate congregants handed her money after the service.

Bridgewater resident Emily Cichocki places a flower on the community wreath in honor of her great-uncle Charles Fanning who was a Lt. in the US Army and died in combat and also in memory of her grandfather, Louis L. Balent who served combat duty in the US Army in WWII.

In an effort to gain exposure for students in Somerset County Vocational & Technical High School’s Gifted and Talented Theater Arts Program, a showcase was recently held at the Peter Jay Sharpe Theater in New York City for thirteen specially selected students. Over the course of the 65 minute showcase, students ranging from sophomores to seniors had the opportunity to show their talents in the form of songs, scenes and monologues in front of eight leading industry casting professionals and agents. In addition to the students showcasing their talents, the event proved to be a great networking and audition opportunity. At the conclusion of the showcase, the students then participated in a post-show panel discussion with three of the casting professionals and agents. Joseph Mancuso, SCVTHS Theater Arts Coordinator, was thrilled by the “enormous dedication and hard-work of the students and faculty.” Mancuso also went on to thank the Somerset County Vocational Schools Foundation for their generous donation of a $2,500 grant, which made the event possible.

A sign in front of the Bridgewater Municipal Building honors those who have served en masse, but there is no memorial listing the names of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. information about Raritan soldiers from World War II, quite often a relative (with a nice scrapbook) can be easily found. Five – John Basilone’s heroics during World War II and the annual parade in his honor has defined the town. Each year a Raritan veteran of World War II is appointed the Grand Marshall of this parade and his story is told in detail. I have now turned to the more difficult task of finding World War II information about Bridgewater men who fought for our country. After paging through old newspapers from the war years, a list of Bridgewater men who were killed during World War II has been compiled. Surprisingly, it may be the first complete list ever produced of Bridgewater men killed during World War II. The closest list we found is on a board at Chimney Rock Park in Martinsville that lists the men in Martinsville who served in the war. A star is placed next to the four men from Martinsville that were killed. There were 20-22 Bridgewater men killed in World War II. (The fate of two men who were listed as “Missing in Action” could not be determined from the newspapers.) Sadly, only a handful of these Bridgewater heroes seem to be remembered around town in some way. Gerald Abrego, a Bradley Gardens man who was killed in action, has the American Legion Post on Old York Road named

after him. His photo is found in the lobby of the building. Joe Mancini, from Leghorn Avenue of Bradley Gardens, who was killed aboard the USS Intrepid was featured (along with his six brothers who served) in two feature articles in The BReeze last year. The board at Chimney Rock Park lists four killed in action Morton Levine, John Mills, Edward Allen, and Leonard Ruediger. Below are the names, along with what little information we have about the Bridgewater men killed in action. (Note - nearly all the newspaper articles did not list the house #, only the street name. It is very possible that most houses were not yet assigned numbers in Bridgewater in the early 1940s.) Gerald Abrego (Pfc.) Brahma Ave., Bradley Gardens - Killed in Leyte Philippines on Nov. 12, 1944. Joe Mancini (Fireman) Leghorn Ave., Bradley GardensKilled Nov. 25, 1944 when a kamikaze hit the USS Intrepid. Frederic Heyer Jr. (Petty Officer) Leghorn Ave., Bradley Gardens - Killed by drowning at sea on Feb. 3, 1945. Morton Levine (Sgt.) Martinsville - Killed in a raid over Munster, Germany on October 10, 1943. Edward Allen (Pfc.) Martinsville – Killed in action in France on June 25, 1944. John Mills (Seaman 1st Class) Martinsville - Killed in a plane

crash at an Air Force base in South Carolina on June 2, 1944. Leonard Ruediger (Seaman) Martinsville – Killed June 1943 with the Merchant Marines. Aubrey Kemper (Lt.) Finderne – Killed in Luxembourg on Oct. 9, 1944. Emil Malesky, Finderne – Killed Dec. 16, 1944 in Belgium at The Battle of the Bulge. George Bergan (Staff Sgt) Finderne - Killed March 23, 1944 of wounds suffered Sept. 8, 1943 in Salerno, Italy. Francis Martwinski (Pfc.) Joseph Poliacik, Rte 206 – Killed in action, Merchant Marine who was serving aboard a liberty ship. Richard Vester (Pfc.) Rte 28 – Killed in a ship sinking Dec. 25th, 1944. Robert David Apgar (Seaman) Green Knoll – Killed in the South Pacific aboard the USS Juneau. Frank Bell, Route 28 – Killed Dec. 1, 1944 in Germany. Chester Erbe (Pfc.) Route 28, Finderne – Killed in Germany on Nov. 23, 1944 Liborio Gargano (Pvt.) Union Ave. – Killed Jan. 7, 1945 in Belgium. Stephan Hill (Pvt.) – Killed Leyte Oct. 26, 1944. Jacob Kopf, Foothill Road – Killed when the sub USS Bullhead sank in Aug. 1945. MIA James Hurley (Lt.) Route 31 – Missing in action flying over Belgium Dec. 27, 1944. MIA Earl Reise, Country Club Road - Missing in action in Italy 1944. Hopefully, Bridgewater can honor these men who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country by putting a plaque with their names on it (similar to other towns) in front of the municipal building. Research has found three Silver Star recipients: Charles Foggiano of Pluckemin Road was awarded The Silver Star while on a special mission in France on July 13, 1944. The citation reads: For gallantry and bravery beyond the call of duty … he risked his life to destroy two enemy machine gun nests which were zeroing in on his company. Realizing his company was pinned down he managed to outflank the enemy. Despite heavy Nazi fire, the young GI managed to creep close to the nests and silence the enemy by hand grenades. His company was thus enabled to advance into Saint Lo because of his deed. As this issue went to press Charles was located. Now 89 years old, he lives in North Carolina. His story will appear in a future issue. Chester Krawcykawski of Union Avenue was awarded the Silver Star for leading a patrol through enemy lines to obtain vital information. This was in Europe as his unit The Rainbow Division of The Seventh Army moved into Germany. No other details are known. Joseph Le Flem who lived at 22 Vones Lane in Bridgewater was awarded his Silver Star for heroics in Italy. (See page 18 for his story). Bronze Star - Eight Bridgewater men have been identified as Bronze Star recepients. Eugene Bielawski - earned while in Germany for excellent service as a section leader of a meteorological station. John Almendinger (Green Knoll) - for actions in Luxemburg and Germany. From Jan – May 1945 he had an excellent record in getting food rations to his battalion Paul Chernock - on Dec. 7, 1944 during a battle with the Germans he helped make sure a dangerous fire did not detonate some explosive ammunition. Franklin Fischer - For distinguished work as a field artillery observer while facing gun and mortar fire. Michael Malko (Pearl Street, Finderne) - On Sept 5, 1944 he held off enemy fire long enough for reinforcements to arrive. The enemy fire was threatening the building of a vital bridge. William Mullen (Finderne) - while in Czechoslovakia – no details available. Mario Savio (Easton Turnpike, Finderne) - while fighting the Japanese at Okinawa – no details available William Gulick (19 Charlotte Dr.) - while in New Guinea in the Pacific – no other details available This newspaper asks you, our readers, to help us find photos, articles, and family contact info for these two groups of Bridgewater men – those who gave their life and those that were decorated for bravery. If you have any information, please email Bruce Doorly at bdoorly@verizon.net. To view the old newspaper articles that we have about these Bridgewater men, visit www.raritan-online.com.

BRHS Baseball ‘Hustle’ Uses Muscle at The Salvation Army

The BRHS “Hustle Baseball Team gives back to their community through a variety of volunteer activities. The Bridgewater-Raritan High School “Hustle Baseball Team continued its goal of giving back to the community by engaging in its second volunteer project this year. In early February, several teammates met up at the Community Food Bank of New Jersey to put their strong bodies to work packaging food kits for senior citizens. In May, the players headed to the Salvation Army New Jersey Division to help move, sort, and coordinate over 5,000 pounds of canned food. The emergency assistance centers in Hazlet and Ortley Beach receive the intake of these goods and distribute them to the shore residents who suffered the effects of Hurricane Sandy. “Hurricane Sandy victims still need assistance, and The Salvation Army is doing all it can to reach those in need, but we still need the help of the army behind the Army, our fantastic volunteers, said Judith Anderson, Salvation Army Resource Manager. More than six months after Sandy devastated parts of New Jersey; The Salvation Army continues to provide essential services to affected residents. Additionally, the baseball players sorted hundreds of children’s books to be used for the Salvation Army’s Mission Literacy Program where children will learn the value of literacy and books. Overall, the BRHS Baseball Team continues to discover the importance of giving back to their community through a variety of volunteer activities. Additional community outreach activities for interested BRHS baseball players are in the works for the summer. The Salvation Army New Jersey Division currently needs groups of volunteers (corporate, church, service clubs, etc.) to help with Hurricane Sandy Relief efforts by unloading and sorting donations. The warehouse located in Hillside needs volunteer groups Monday through Saturday from 10am-3pm. Interested groups should contact Judith Anderson on Judith.Anderson@use.salvationarmy.org.

Raritan Councilwoman Stefanie Gara (left) and Raritan Borough Council President Don Tozzi (in duck costume) speak with On The Loose TV news reporter Gigi Schweikert about the 30-foot-tall duck that splashed down in Raritan.

As soon as the 30-foot-tall duck splashed down in Raritan Borough, the media was there to cover every quack. The first crew to hit the scene was On The Loose TV, represented by news reporter Gigi Schweikert. Providing all the facts for the Sunday, September 29th Raritan Borough Riverfest and Rubber Duck Race were Raritan Councilwoman Stefanie Gara, and Borough Council President Don Tozzi, donning his characteristic duck costume to promote the event. The giant inflatable duck will be rotated to various locations around the borough over the next few months leading up to the Riverfest. A new feature of this year’s Rubber Duck Race is the opportunity to sponsor a Corporate Duck, limited to 100 oversized rubber ducks available to organizations for $100 each. The Somerset Patriots have welcomed infielder Jeff Baisley to the 2013 team. Baisley has Major League experience with the Oakland A’s during the 2008 season, when he appeared in 14 games for the team and hit .256 with 11 hits and five RBI. Baisley also has four seasons of Triple-A experience for the A’s, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Los Angeles Dodgers, Detroit Tigers, and Chicago White Sox organizations. The 2013 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford is currently underway. For tickets, call (908) 252-0700 or visit www. somersetpatriots.com.

This past school year, members of the National Honor Society (NHS) at Somerset County Vocational Technical High School (SCVTHS) dedicated their efforts to raise money for The Smile Train. The Smile Train is an international charity that provides cleft palate surgery to those in need. Smile Train has carried out free, corrective cleft surgery for children in 87 developing countries. Through a variety of events and fundraisers, the NHS members raised a total of $2,049.95. With this amount, the NHS surpassed their goal of raising at least $2,000 for a charitable organization. Their most successful fundraiser was a school-wide semiformal Winter Dance. This event alone generated over $600. “I am proud of the NHS members for their continued dedication throughout the year, willingness to contribute, and sense of altruism,” stated NHS Advisor Catherine Fortunato.
