Memorial Day A Day to Remember

Raritan’s Frank Esposito served in the Army during World War II.

By Bruce Doorly bdoorly@verizon.net In the front of the Raritan Municipal Building is a plaque that lists those who died fighting for our country. While these soldiers’ names are immortalized in bronze their individual stories are not well known. Decades have passed since the family of our heroes received the tragic telegram informing them that their son or husband would not be coming home. It is important that we do not forget these men. This Memorial Day, we highlight one of these men who made the ultimate sacrifice so that today we can live in freedom. Frank Esposito was born in 1918 in Raritan and lived at 7 Thompson Street. His father was born in Italy and his mother was born in this country. They had three kids – Frank was the oldest, a brother James, and a sister Lucy.

As a boy, Frank attended Raritan Public Schools. Growing up he and his brother James played outside on their own as kids did in the 1920s and 1930s. Frank, 2 years older than James, made sure that no one picked on his younger brother. Frank was not one to shy away from physical contact. One of his passions was playing on Raritan’s sandlot football team where he was a lineman. On hot summer days, the playground for Raritan boys was the Raritan River. Their favorite swimming location was called the “New Dam Area” near the border of Raritan and Bridgewater. With no air conditioning, the river was a godsend and would often be packed with young swimmers. The river was not just a favorite of Frank’s for swimming, but he also fished in the river. When he wanted variety in the thrill of the catch, he would go hunting. As a young man Frank worked as a driver for Tozzi Fuel. He later worked at Calco Pharmaceuticals. A few months after the U.S. entered the war, Frank enlisted in the Army and was assigned to an infantry division. His previous experience firing a rifle was evident and earned him a marksman medal finishing first out of 220 men in shooting accuracy. In May of 1942, while still training in the Army, Frank marContinued on page 16

celebrated the start of their 54th season with an Opening Day Ceremony on April 20th at Ardmaer Field in Bridgewater. Players, coaches, parents, and township officials were on hand to get the season started. Nine teams lined the field as Bridgewater Mayor Dan Hayes threw out the first pitch which was caught by Gabe Jentis of the Phillies team. Bigger and Better Raritan Riverfest and Rubber Duck Race Planned Exhibitors Now Being Scheduled The Raritan Borough Economic Development Committee (EDC) reports that the committee is getting all its ducks in a row for the Borough’s 2nd annual Riverfest and Raritan Rubber Duck Race, scheduled for Sunday, September 29th from noon to 5:00 p.m. at Raritan’s Canal Street Park (near the John Basilone statue.) The featured event will be the inaugural running of the Grand Rubber Duck Race, plus the 2nd Annual Traditional Rubber Duck Race, where attendees can sponsor a rubber duck to race down the Raritan River as its “owner” cheers from the historic Nevius Street Bridge above. Event planners will be selling ducks shortly for the races, which are being sponsored by Uncle Vinnie’s Clam Bar. Additional Riverfest sponsors are invited to participate by reserving their booth space now, with two different levels available starting as low as $75. Sponsors are required to bring their own tables and tents.

“With Raritan’s precious riverfront being among the Borough’s greatest assets, we’re using the Riverfest and Duck Races’ to help energize our ongoing efforts to restore the river and the adjoining land to its original pristine condition,” stated Don Christensen, founding Chairman of the Raritan Economic Development Committee & principal of Christensen Tamburri Communications. The Raritan riverfront was featured on the cover of New Jersey Municipalities magazine last year, and Raritan Borough received a major award for its initial work to begin restoring the area. The Riverfest is shaping up to be another historic celebration, with the Duck Race proceeds again being earmarked to support two very worthy causes – The Steeplechase Cancer Center at Somerset Medical Center, and the Relief Hose Co. #2 Raritan Volunteer Fire Department. The directing commodore of the Duck Race, Don Tozzi states, “A number of additional duck sightings can be expected over the summer months as the excitement builds

for the September 29th splashdown. Raritan residents, businesses, corporations and visitors are encouraged to join in the fun and sponsor a duck for $5.00 or a Grand Duck for $100.00, which may win a prize, but more importantly will support the heroic work being performed by The Steeplechase Cancer Center at Somerset Medical Center, as well as the Relief Hose Co. #2 Raritan Volunteer Fire Department.” Interested Riverfest sponsors and vendors may reserve a booth at the general event itself, which will feature food, music, classic cars, activities for kids, and the 2nd annual Camp Bow Wow Doggie Fashion Show with a canine runway on the Nevius Street Bridge itself. Some new attractions are also being planned for the 2nd annual event, including activities sponsored by the Branchburg Sports Complex. For further Riverfest information, call Stefanie Gara at 908-392-6097. For Duck Race information call Don Tozzi at 908-338-0000.

Discovery Day at the ‘New’ Cemetery of Somerville on May 4th The Board of Trustees of the New Cemetery invites everyone to a free open house at this historic Victorian garden cemetery located at 192 South Bridge Street, Somerville. This non-sectarian cemetery is open to the public daily. There is much to discover in a cemetery. The history and legends of Somerville are written on the stones. The wooded paths and diverse horticulture offer opportunities for brisk walks, relaxing strolls or quiet reflection. Every Memorial Day, people gather around the Veteran’s Circle to pay tribute to those that have served this country. This is the final resting place of 190 Civil War Veterans including 19 US Colored Troops. By 1867, Somerville had outgrown the space available in the old Raritan Cemetery across South Bridge Street and the pastors of the six local churches came together to provide a “new” cemetery. On Saturday, May 4th, 10 am-2 pm, thirty minute guided tours will meet at the gate house. Self-guided tour instructions and grave stone rubbing materials will be available, as well as lists for scavenger hunts based on history, nature and art. Prizes and light refreshments will be provided. Trustees will be available to answer questions.

The evening’s keynote speaker is Joel Mowbray, award-winning investigative journalist and nationally syndicated columnist. Raritan Stories Wanted

Counseling and Therapy Services of Bridgewater/Raritan will be providing evergreen seedlings to area residents during the month of May to help replace trees lost in the fall to Hurricane Sandy. Anyone who would like a seedling to plant is asked to call the office at 908-218-9062 to arrange a convenient pick up time.

The Raritan Historical & Cultural Committee is working on the script for a walking tour of town. We have a lot of pre-1900 history of Raritan, but we are hoping to add recent history or stories, bits of local interest that will enliven our script and make the tour fun. Do you have stories that could be used? Maybe you remember the day the woolen mill closed, or could tell about the bicycle races that went through Raritan. Perhaps you have a family story about living in the Frelinghuysen house before it became the library, or you remember one of the big fires. We want to hear your stories. Please contact us through the mayor’s office and we will arrange to be in touch. Call 908-231-1300.

70th Annual Tour of Somerville Announces Schedule Changes for 2013 Middle Earth, the organizers for the Tour of Somerville Cycling Series, has announced the competition’s 2013 schedule. The Series is expected to attract over 600 professional and novice cyclist participants and more than 20,000 festival-goers throughout the Memorial Day weekend. Competitive cycling races and family festivities will take place May 25-27, 2013. “This year we have chosen to consolidate Friday’s and Saturday’s races into one larger event on Saturday,” explained Maggie Navatto, event director for Middle Earth. “We are really excited to host Saturday in Raritan. Raritan was a great supporter of the races years ago, and coming back to that area of Somerset County has a ‘homecoming’ feeling.” Beginning Saturday, May 25 at 9:00 a.m., cyclists will gather in downtown Raritan. Beginning and ending on West Somerset Street, professionals will compete in a 75-mile road race traveling through 13 municipalities. Meanwhile, masters and amateur cyclists will compete in four different criterium races in the heart of Raritan. On Sunday, May 26 at 1:30 p.m., all levels of cyclists will race in four different shortcourse races in Bound Brook. Also offered that day will be a

family fun ride and kids’ bounce house during the bicycle races, as well as a 5K run before the races at 11:15 a.m. put on by the Twin-Boro’s Scholarship Foundation. On Monday, May 27, beginning at 10:45 a.m., cyclists will participate in six different race challenges in Somerville. The day begins with a parade at 9 a.m. and a family fun ride at 10 a.m. Entertainment, including the popular Kids’ Pavilion and the Sports and Music Festival, takes place during the cycling competitions. The day climaxes when professional cyclists compete in the 50-mile Tour of Somerville, a 70-year tradition in Somerset County.

Middle Earth is still seeking additional sponsors for the event, and the agency will tailor packages for businesses interested in marketing opportunities. Interested businesses can contact the agency at 908-725-7223. Middle Earth, the event organizer and beneficiary, is a nonprofit that has served youth in Somerset County for 40 years. The Tour of Somerville Cycling Series is free to the public and offers food, live music, kids’activities, and a variety of entertainment. You can learn more about each day’s events, obtain course maps, learn about sponsorship or volunteer opportunities, and cyclist registration at www.tourofsomerville.org.

Boy Battling Cancer Sworn In Alongside Bridgewater Police Officers

Anthony Mendoza is sworn in as a new police officer by Bridgewater Mayor Dan Hayes.

Members of Team 303 pose with their robot at the FIRST Robotics Competition held at BRHS. Team members are (l-r): Alessandra Sanchez (coach), Tyler Stark (driver), Dominique Dahl (human player), and Hayley Katz (co-pilot). Photo/Lauren Dahl On April 6-7, Bridgewater-Raritan High School hosted a FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC). In addition to the B-R robotics team, forty-three high school teams competed. The FRC event at BRHS is the sixth (6th) and last Mid-Atlantic Robotics (MAR) FRC District Qualifier. MAR is affiliated with FIRST Robotics, a not-for-profit organization founded in 1989 that aims to inspire youth and promote interest in science and technology through robotic competitions that involve 2,500 teams and 58,000 students in the U.S. and around the world. All 109 MAR FRC teams get to compete at two (2) of the six (6) District Qualifiers. At each event, teams earn points for the performance of their robots and also by receiving specific awards. On April 11th the BRHS team and their robot traveled to Lehigh University to spend the weekend competing against 50 other teams in the Mid-Atlantic Robotics Region Championship. Winners of the Mid-Atlantic Robotics Region Championship at Lehigh were able to advance to the FIRST Robotics World Championship in St. Louis. Team 303, was ranked within the top 6 for MAR points and thereby invited to St. Louis.

After being sworn in as a “Police Officer for a Day” Malik Campbell, a 4-year-old boy battling a rare form of cancer, is given a Police ID badge by Bridgewater Police Chief Richard Borden.

Two officers have joined the ranks of the Bridgewater Police Department. Officer Anthony Mendoza and Officer Joseph Bones were sworn in by Mayor Dan Hayes on April 10th. As part of the ceremony, Bridgewater Township Police Chief Richard Borden and the Bridgewater Police Benevolent Association 174 honored a 4-year-old boy, Malik Campbell, who has a rare form of cancer called Burkitt’s Leukemia. In December 2012, Chief Borden and members of the PBA met Malik Campbell of Franklin Park, NJ at St. Peter’s Hospital during their annual holiday toy delivery. The officers learned that Malik loves police officers and is fascinated with every aspect of their job. Chief Borden, having been a cancer survivor himself, suggested that Malik be sworn in as an Honorary Police Officer. Mayor Hayes presented Malik with a Proclamation

New Store in Raritan Sells Metal Detectors, Treasure Hunting Supplies

Ron DeGhetto opened his store The Gold Digger Metal Detectors in March. The store carries over 50 different metal detectors, sand scoops, digging tools, headphones, treasure pouches, books, maps and lots more.

Raritan resident Ron DeGhetto has found a way to blend his occupation with something he loves. Ron has been sleuthing for coins and jewelry for decades. “It has been a passion of mine for a long time,” he said. “And this business allows me to share my passion for treasure hunting with others.” Ron opened his store, The Gold Digger Metal Detectors, at 43 W. Somerset Street in Raritan last month. “Unlike other stores that hang metal detectors on

their walls to supplement their income, The Gold Digger only sells metal detectors, treasure hunting supplies and accessories,” said Ron. “We are truly a metal detector store.” The store is stocked with all the necessary equipment for treasure hunting for every level of enthusiast, from the beginner up to the serious treasure hunter. The impressive inventory includes over 50 different metal detectors, sand scoops, digging tools, headphones, treasure pouches, books, maps and lots

more. Also helping to increase interest in the hobby is Ron’s display case filled with treasures he has found over the years. “My favorite find, over the 30 years I’ve been treasure hunting, was a 1676 French 4 Sols Coin which I found in a farm field in South Hampton, NY,” shares Ron. The most valuable of his finds was a diamond engagement ring which was found on a beach. If you’d like to join in on the fun of treasure hunting, there are some great events going on this month. On Saturday, May 18th the 2nd annual National Metal Detecting Day will be held in Atlantic City. “Treasure Hunters” young and old, new and experienced, will come from near and far to join together to celebrate this fantastic hobby. There will be special hunts, and $40,000 in giveaways and prizes. On Sunday, May 19th Gold Digger Metal Detectors will be hosting “Go MineLabbing Day” a South Jersey Metal Detecting Club Hunt event. This will be an all-day hunt for both adventure and treasure. To get more information on these events or to purchase tickets, please visit golddiggermetaldetectors.com.

Dental Byte Athletic Mouth Guards and Sports Injuries

Spring has finally sprung along with a myriad of sports that can potentially cause damage to your child’s teeth. The American Dental Association recommends protection with a properly fitted mouth guard for all contact sports (see ada.org for ADA statement). Several studies have been conducted to show that athletes wearing guards have less oral injuries then those that do not. Why gamble with your child’s teeth? Permanent teeth that are traumatized, fractured or lost will be difficult and costly to deal with over a lifetime. Your dentist can make a high quality fitted athletic mouth guard for your child in a matter of a week. In a pinch, the boil and bite guards, when formed properly, can also do the trick.

ley Pestorius, Jacob Pica, Doug Quagliato, Melody Visconti, Carter Weiland and Evan Kott swam an impressive total of 21 individual event finals. This meet was the culmination of an explosive 2012-2013 Short Course season for the Tide. According to Coach Yearwood, “This was the greatest performance we have had in the history of our team, and to have such success at a meet of this caliber gave the Tide very positive national exposure. Watching Tide swimmers excel and win heat after heat is something I will remember for a long time. Seeing the parents, swimmers, and coaches creating and strengthening bonds and making this team a closer and more unified team was what this trip was all about. The Bridgewater Tide offers a Spring Clinic and Summer Swim Team, both short and long course. Medi-Vet Stem Cell Therapy Now Available at Branchburg Animal Hospital Stem Cell Therapy is a relatively new technology that uses an animal’s fat cells to produce healing stem cells to provide relief from osteoarthritis, degenerative joint disease, disc disease, tendon & ligament injuries, as well as other medical issues! How does this work? A stem cell is an un-differentiated cell that is already in the body. It can become any type of cell that is needed for healing because a chemical reaction at the site of inflammation or injury signals the stem cell to go to that site and initiate repair. This is beneficial for treating problems that we know are present as well as problems we may not be aware of. Stem cells can be injected directly into the joint, as well as infused IV. The stem cells can treat “globally” (any area in the body that needs healing) versus locally as a surgical procedure would. We are very excited to have performed several procedures already, and are happy to report that all our patients are finding a better quality of life from their joint pain and problems. The Medi-Vet advantage is that stem cells are processed on site and do not require any shipment. This not only gives us the ability to increase stem cell numbers, but eliminates any shipping error issues, and allows us to harvest, process and re-infuse the cells all in the same day. We can also bank stem cells for future use (we are averaging 6 future treatments). We recently received notification that the first combination ovariohysterectomy (spay)/stem cell banking procedure has been performed in a 6 month old puppy! How exciting and proactive! Check our website for more information: www.branchburganimalhospital.com. Click on the Medi-Vet tab on our homepage for detailed information, or call us for an appointment!

held their annual Healthy Dance, an event that raises money for a healthrelated, charitable organization. Teachers gave the students a choice of three organizations and an explanation of how each organization uses donations to help others. The students voted, and this year they chose the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The event was a great success and the Cubs raised $650. Students danced the night away with their PE teachers, Mr. V, Mr. Cipot, and Mr. Thomas, who made it a fun and successful event! Plaque in front of the Raritan Municipal Building that lists those who died fighting for our country.

Frank Esposito married Helen Kovac of Raritan in a chapel at Fort Jackson, SC, in May of 1942. ried his girlfriend Helen Kovac who lived in Raritan at 73 Anderson Street. The wedding took place in the chapel at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. The groom and ushers wore their military uniforms for the ceremony. Helen remained with Frank while he was training on the east coast. After a year, Frank was transferred and Helen, then expecting a child, moved back home to Raritan. Their child, a baby girl Frances, was born in January of 1944. Frank was able to come home in March of 1944 to see his daughter. After his visit home, he returned to the Army and was assigned to an Army base at Oahu, Hawaii.

Serving in the military during World War II was, of course, dangerous. The danger was not just from the enemy. Training accidents caused a significant percentage of deaths during the war. The men were learning to use dangerous equipment and flying new un-tested aircraft. Of the 24 Raritan men who died in the war, three died in training accidents. Frank Esposito was one of them. While on a training maneuver in Hawaii on June 11, 1944, he lost his life when an ammunition storage facility exploded. The blast also killed nine other men. Back in Raritan, Frank’s wife Helen received the telegram informing her of her husband’s death. His daughter Frances was just 4 months

old at the time. Frank Esposito was buried at a military cemetery in Hawaii. After the war, his wife Helen had the option of bringing his body back home to be buried. As many did, she chose to let him rest in the military cemetery. Helen seldom spoke of her husband’s death. However, it seemed to shape her actions, as throughout her life she was actively involved in the VFW and other veterans organizations – at times taking a leadership role. Frank Esposito still has several connections to Raritan today: His daughter, Frances Esposito Capetta, lives on Lynwood Street in Raritan with her husband Al. Raritan’s “Volunteer of the Year Award” is named after Frank’s uncle Nick Esposito. The Esposito home at 7 Thompson Street is still owned by the family, but it is now for sale as his sister Lucy passed away last year. Frank’s younger brother James also served in World War II with honors in the Air Force. James is now 93 years old and lives in Somerset, New Jersey.

Carlton Smith

Corey Smith

The Somerset Patriots welcomed back local stars from Piscataway, New Jersey with the return of Corey and Carlton Smith for the 2013 season. Corey Smith was a first round pick by the Cleveland Indians in the 2000 draft out of Piscataway High School. He has experience in the Indians, San Diego Padres, Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Kansas City Royals, and Los Angeles Dodgers organizations including four seasons at the Triple-A level. Corey Smith hit .263 with 46 hits, 11 home runs, and 30 RBI in 47 games played for Somerset last season. “Corey adds a lot of power to the middle of our line up and a great addition defensively. We are excited to have him back this season,” said Brett Jodie, manager of the Somerset Patriots Baseball Club. Carlton Smith is also a graduate of Piscataway High School and has experience in the Cleveland Indians and Chicago Cubs organizations. He finished the 2012 season with a 3-4 record, a 4.03 ERA, and 41 strikeouts in 67.0 innings pitched in 46 games for Somerset. “When Carlton is on top of his game, he is extremely difficult to hit. He’s also a class act that everyone enjoys having around,” said Jodie. In his junior year at Piscataway High School, Carlton Smith led his team to the County Championship with his 8-0 record. For more information about the 2013 Somerset Patriots season, call (908) 252-0700 or visit www.somersetpatriots.com.

Milltown Hosts 4th Annual Special Olympics Basketball Tournament

Continued from previous page

Special Olympics Basketball Tournament Participants

On May 20, 1944 England’s Prime Minister Winston Churchill met with U.S. Troops as they prepared for the invasion of Europe. Frank Russo is the first soldier on the right. Frank Russo brought home some interesting souvenirs from the war. His family still has them today. One of these souvenirs almost cost him his life. One day, while stationed in a home in a German town that they had just taken, Frank went upstairs to look around. Always on the lookout for not just Germans, but German collectables, Frank found a full German officer’s uniform – hat and all. A quick evaluation showed that this uniform was just his size. He decided to put it on and surprise his fellow soldiers downstairs. As he moved down the stairs Frank found that he did indeed surprise his buddies, so much so that they almost shot him. Fortunately as they went to draw their weapons they recognized him. Another collectible Frank was able to bring home was a prized German Lugar pistol. These guns were carried by German officers and are one of the most sought after collectible guns from World War II. Another item he brought home is an important artifact in the lessons of history - a true collectible - a Nazi Banner. It is 6 feet tall and 2.5 feet wide. Such banners are often seen in history documentaries and World War II movies as the Germans of the era decorated many towns and building fronts with them. Finally, one priceless photograph was taken of Frank during the war. It is a photo of Frank Russo with England’s Prime Minister Winston Churchill. It was taken on May 20, 1944. The photo is of Prime Minister Churchill meeting with several troops who were preparing for the upcoming invasion of Europe. Frank Russo served 21 years in the Army. He served in the Korean War where he was awarded another Bronze Star. That citation (summarized) read: Master Sergeant Frank Russo is cited for meritorious service – he served as first sergeant of a reconnaissance company under combat conditions, contributing materially to the success of his unit’s missions. His thorough knowledge of armor

tactics and his sound leadership earned him the sincere respect and confidence of both officers and enlisted men. … His courage, tireless efforts and his cooperative spirit marked him as a superior soldier. My source for information on Frank Russo is Frank’s nephew Eric Jacobs who lives in Raritan. He was close with his Uncle Frank. As a teenager he often caddied for him. When his uncle passed away in 2008, Eric made sure to preserve his Uncle’s war memorabilia, photos, and story. Today Eric’s den holds photos, citations, articles, and medals relating to his Uncle Frank’s wartime and lifetime experience. Every soldier who served in World War II should have a nephew like Eric to preserve his story. These old photos and mementos are a solemn remembrance of the wartime sacrifices that were made by the Greatest Generation. Until now the viewing of this collection, and others like it, was only done by the occasional visitor that came to the home. But today the digital age offers an opportunity for such treasured photos and keepsakes to be viewed by many from any location using the internet. The BReeze has been glad to work with Eric to put Uncle Frank’s war story on the Internet where it can now be easily viewed by anyone. Visit www.raritan-online.com to see more about Frank’s story. I encourage other families to take the time to put such treasures on the Internet. My recommendation is to make a visual/photo oriented story that is easy to view and interesting to any audience, not just history buffs. Once the information is online, family members and friends from all over the country can learn what their relatives did for this country. Besides his nephew Eric, other family members of Frank Russo still live in Raritan today. His sister Rose lives on Codington Street. His brother John Russo, who served in the Navy during World War II, lives on Anderson Street. John will be the Grand Marshal of this year’s Basilone Parade.

On April 10th Milltown School held their 4th Annual Special Olympics Basketball Tournament at Eisenhower School. The energy was high in the packed Eisenhower School gymnasium to celebrate the 8 weeks students spent practicing their skills of passing, dribbling, and shooting baskets. The tournament provided students the opportunity to learn basic basketball skills, teamwork, good sportsmanship, social skills and have a blast with their peers.

The teams consisted of 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade students from Mrs. Hamby’s, Mrs. Deny’s and Miss Quaglia’s classes along with their 4th Grade Basketball Buddies. Milltown staff members volunteered their time as coaches with encouraging support from the many BRHS student helpers. The event was sponsored by the BREA with additional donations and support by Milltown’s Community of Caring, Milltown’s PTO, DJ Rob Thomas,

and Jim Gano of Crown Trophy in Flemington who donated the beautiful personalized trophies to all of the players. Four teams competed in the Tournament: Green Gators, Blue Thunder, Purple Unicorns, and Orange Mountain Lions. Two Games plus a lively musical half time show and a final game was played where the Blue Thunder was victorious overall. The night was filled with continuous high fives, enthusiastic line dances, and ongoing completed passes.

Students from Ms. Shomers 4th grade class and Mrs. Bohen’s 2nd grade class at Bradley Gardens School recently answered the question, “What is the most awesome thing you’ve ever seen? What made it awesome? Their answers appear below: Daniel, Grade 4 In a soccer game, the most awesome thing I’ve ever seen was when the ball was up in the air it hit the guy’s chest until the guy did a back flip and kicked the ball. The ball went right in the goal. It was the most unexpected moment in a soccer game. I could not believe that had happened. Fallon, Grade 2 The most amazing thing I ever saw was my Nana, healthy with her hair back, when the cancer was gone. Once she was so sick I didn’t know what would happen. When the hair came back and she came back to our football games, I knew she was okay. Hallie, Grade 4 The most awesome thing I’ve ever seen was the inside of the White House! I even got to play at the White House bowling alley! I was there because my friend Ally’s uncle writes some of President Obama’s speeches. He gave us a tour of the White House. Sofia, Grade 2 The most awesome thing I have seen is a dog jump through hoops at the Big Apple Circus. A dog jumped off a diving board and someone caught him. This is awesome because these dogs did not have homes. The circus rescued them and gave them homes with the circus. Reggie, Grade 2 The most awesome thing I ever saw was a bear at Cub Scout camp. The bear was walking along the lake at Cub Scout camp. It was awesome because I have never seen a bear before. We chased the bear away before it came closer. It was fun there. Karli, Grade 2 The most awesome thing was when I saw an alligator and got to hold it. It was four feet long and had very pointy scales. Its belly felt like rubber. The alligator had duct tape around its mouth so it wouldn’t bite me. I had my picture taken with it. Claudia, Grade 4 The most awesome thing I’ve ever seen was the Thanksgiving Day Parade because I saw famous people like The Wanted and Neon Trees. The best part was when they waved at me! I hope next year I could meet them at the Thanksgiving Day Parade. Dylan, Grade 4 The most awesome thing I’ve ever seen is Niagara Falls. Niagara

Guards! Guards! By Terry Pratchett - Nobody does comedy like Terry Pratchett, and nothing better represents Pratchett’s satirical genius than the epic Discworld. Over thirty books long, Discworld spans many different storylines, but the City Watch arc, beginning with Guards! Guards!, has stood out as a universal favorite. Imaginative and hysterical, Guards! Guards! is the perfect entrance to one of the best series in modern fantasy. The City Guard nearly always plays a crucial role in fantasy novels. Usually, this crucial role is to be singlehandedly defeated in combat by a brave hero. Not so in Ankh-Morpork. In fact, the Ankh-Morpork Night Watch has got it even worse off. In a city where thieves, assassins, and other various rogues have been organized into guilds that pay compensation to the state for their crimes, the Night Watch, no longer necessary for the protection of the city, has been reduced to little more than a three-man comedy routine. However, when the nefarious Supreme Grand Master of the Elucidated Brethren of the Ebon Night summons a ferocious dragon into Ankh-Morpork, the Night Watch may have to do some guarding after all. With the help of his enthusiastic new recruit, Lance-Constable Carrot, Captain Sam Vimes must drag the Watch—and himself—out of a perpetual rut to defend the city he loves. Riotously funny and keenly intelligent, Guards! Guards! is entertainment at its best. Fans can continue to follow Sam Vimes’ adventures in Men at Arms or go back to the beginning of Discworld with The Color of Magic.

Local Students from Storming Robots Win at AI-Oriented Robotics Tournament The Eighth US RobocupJunior, an artificial intelligence oriented robotics competition, was held at the Liberty Science Center on April 14, 2013. There were 44 teams with 169 participants from CA, NC, NJ, NY, PA. Storming Robots teams again filled the leaderboard in most of the Leagues. Team SR-chitects won First Place in the RoboRescue B League. The team is comprised of students Michael Xie, Andrew Amerman, Salil Pathare (all from BRHS), and Andre Gou (of Warrensville High School). Other Storming Robots teams also won First Place under the RoboSoccer/Primary League, RoboRescue A/Primary League, and Second Place under RoboDance/Primary League. RoboRescue involved tasks simulating rescuing victims from natural disasters. RoboRescueB involved deceivingly simple looking, but complex Maze configurations. This requires students to write algorithms usually studied in college advanced levels in computer science/engineering. Winning or not, “Hats Off” to all teams who have demonstrated self-initiative and perseverance in challenging themselves. What set these teams apart from many others: Throughout the course of 6+ hours at the competition, they had to make strategic and technical decisions to continuously improve themselves without a mentor’s presence. “These impressive youngsters have been trained to think independently and learned to be effective problem solvers,” said Elizabeth Mabrey, the director of Storming Robots, and one of the two sole mentors for all 13 teams from Storming Robots. Although the official confirmation has yet to be announced from the International RobocupJunior, all teams that won First Place will be invited to compete at the 2013 World Competition held in the city of Eindhoven in the Netherlands between June 24th and July 1st, 2013. At the World Tournament, they will have the opportunity to interface with hundreds of research scientists and engineers from around the world, and watch their amazing robotics apparati in action. Storming Robots, located in Branchburg, is an institution dedicated to building students’ computational thinking skills which is indispensable in science, technology, engineering, and math application. Visit Storming Robots online at www.stormingrobots.com.

PANTHER SPORTS Baseball - The 7-3 Panthers are racking up some impressive stats with 69 runs batted in, six regulars batting above .400, and pitching 48 strikeouts in the first 10 games this season. Their only loses are against top 20 teams and those games were hard fought battles. Led by captains Josh Jankowski (C/3B) and Kevin Hrubik (OF) the Panthers are seeded fifth in the Somerset County Tournament and will play at home versus North Plainfield in the second round. Nick Norcia (OF), Brandon Weidenfeld (P), Josh Posner (P), and Pat Saulino (1B/DH) complete the list of 6 seniors on the team.

Softball - Seniors Jordan Stephenson (SS) (.500) and Alyssa

Myrnyj (1B) (.360) are leading the Panthers in batting average and fellow seniors Nikki Thomas (CF) and Nicole Braun (2B) are burning up the bases with 5 stolen bases each. The Panthers (5-4) were seeded fourth in the Somerset County Tournament and will face either Bound Brook or Somerville on May 5th at home.

Boys Lacrosse - The boys lacrosse team has arguably the toughest

schedule in the state. Currently at 4-3 the Panthers have five games left in the regular season and four of them are against top twenty teams. The boys are up to the challenge and leading the attack are Tyler Konen-14 goals, 6 assists, Ryan Mygatt-11goals, 5 assists, Cody Ruperto-11 goals, 3 assists, and Griffin Figel-9 goals, 8 assists. On defense Jared Kaden and Andrew Hengemuhle are in front of goalie Don Stires.

Girls Lacrosse - The girls are scoring but not enough to overcome

their opponents. At 1-8 the Panthers continue to give their opponents a contest. Leading the scoring for the Panthers are seniors Rachel Yaney-22 goals, 3 assists, Dayle Paustian-11 goals, 6 assists, and Leanne Bak-10 goals, 2 assists and guarding the goal is senior Julia Santillo.

Boys Tennis - The Panthers are 9-3 with their only losses com-

ing from two top-ten teams. Junior Eric Tai is first singles, junior Brian Chen is second singles, and senior Andrew Statkevich is third singles. Junior Ameet Bhatt and senior Sunil Hebber play together at first doubles. Second doubles is manned by sophomore Henry Gitterman with alternating juniors Julian Yarmouth and Nedeem Hilal.

Boys Volleyball - Now at 8-5 the boys are looking forward to a

winning season and a good run during the state tournament. Seniors Jack Feisler, Bryan Finn, and Jason Geary are doing a great job on the front line with help from junior Mitchell Repak and sophomore Matt Morin. Setting for the Panthers is sophomore BJ Blair and at libero is senior Drew Undgereider.
