Thousands Welcome Home Basilone

Hundreds of athletes came out to run, leap and throw their way to the gold for this year’s Somerset County Special Olympics held at BridgewaterRaritan High School on May 4th. After the athletes marched onto the field and the symbolic torch was lit came the oath: “Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.” The Special Olympics offers year-round sports training and competitions for adults and children giving them the opportunity to show off their skills.

Thousands of people gathered in a large field just over the Nevius Street Bridge to celebrate the homecoming of John Basilone. The crowd included many politicians, numerous celebrities, and the national press. By Bruce Doorly bdoorly@verizon.net After John Basilone was awarded The Congressional Medal of Honor for heroics at Guadalcanal, he was ordered home to sell war bonds. Before he was sent on the bond tour, he was granted a couple of weeks leave at home. The town of Raritan was proud that one of their own had been awarded the country’s highest honor and plans were made to hold a homecoming parade in his honor. The parade chairman was Judge George Allgair; a judge in the Somerville court system and the town’s attorney. He immediately set

Raritan Little League Opens 61st Season

After a long winter, Raritan Little League was more than ready to play ball and celebrate Opening Day of the 2013 season. The celebration was held on April 27th, after rain caused the Borough to postpone the event originally scheduled for April 20th. Councilman Greg Lobell threw the first pitch. Raritan Mayor Jo-Ann Liptak along with Raritan Borough Council members wished the teams a good season. After the ceremony, players and their families enjoyed hot dogs and soda and all teams played exhibition games. Top Left: The Yankees are ready to play ball! the bar high for this event saying, “It will be the greatest day in the history of Raritan.” The day when Johnny would come marching home was set for September 19, 1943. The organizers called it “John Basilone Day.” Anticipating the public would turn out in vast numbers for the parade, the organizers realized that the town of Raritan would not be big enough, so they planned to start the parade in Somerville and end it in Raritan. After much planning and anticipation, John Basilone Day arrived. At 10 a.m., mass was said in his honor at St. Ann’s Church on Ander-

son Street in Raritan. He asked that mass be said in honor of his buddies still in Guadalcanal. Mass that day was given by Father Robert Graham - a priest from Somerville who was very active on the homefront during the war. He said in his sermon, “Sergeant Basilone’s life will be a guide to American Youth. God had spared him for some important work.” At 11:30 there was a lunch in Basilone’s honor headed by the reception committee at The Raritan Valley Farms Inn - a popular restaurant that was located on the Somerville Circle where the Super 8 Motel is today. At 1 p.m., the parade began. The streets of Somerville and Raritan were packed. Local papers later gave estimates of the attendance with the lowest estimate 30,000 and the highest 50,000. John Basilone rode in an open car with his parents Sal and Dora who beamed with pride throughout the day. John sat on top of the back seat (between his parents) acknowledging cheers from the crowd. His car moved slowly allowing John to shake hands with various people, including a group of veterans from World War I. The atmosphere along the parade route was impressive. Signs were hung saying, “Welcome Home Sergeant J. Basilone.” American flags were everywhere and John Basilone’s picture was displayed in many storefronts. Raritan resident and business owner, Charley Glaser, in a 2005 interview, perhaps summed up the day best describing it as “electrifying.” The parade route ended in a large field just over the Nevius Street Bridge. (Tobacco heiress Doris Duke owned this property.) In this

BRMS Students Compete in National Science Bowl

The Science team poses on the National Mall in front of the Capitol Building. L-R: Jerry Kong, Patrick Wu, Akash Kumar, Brian Wei, and Irene Qiao. Photo/U.S. Department of Energy and National Science Bowl After winning the New Jersey Regional Science Bowl in February, members of the Bridgewater-Raritan Middle School Science team earned an all-expense paid trip to compete in the National Science Bowl in Washington, D.C. The entire trip (travel, lodging, food, etc.) was funded by the Department of Energy. The team spent the first two days of the bowl touring the city, including a night tour of the national monuments and a daytime visit to the National Mall and Smithsonian museums. In the Round Robin portion of the academic competition, the team competed in seven matches, finishing with a record of 7 wins, 1 loss. This earned them a spot to compete in the elite “Double Elimination” competition, limited to 16 teams. Although the team was eliminated early in the Double Elimination, their matches were well-played and hard-fought. Their top 16 ranking puts them in the top 1.5% of all Middle School teams nationwide. The group also designed a model electric car, which was entered to race in Sunday’s “Electric Car Competition”. Their accomplishments were the result of their hard work, dedication to academic achievement, and scientific knowledge.

Nevius Street Bridge Nurture Day

Members of B-R Girl Scout Troops 60282, 60938 and 60802 and Debbie Rubito (2nd from left, Scout Leader) and Loring Nagle (center, Yoga Teacher) planted perennials donated by Raritan Agway at the historical Nevius Street Bridge. The Nevius Street Bridge served as a beautiful gathering spot for the Bridgewater-Raritan Girl Scouts to Self-Nurture, River-Nurture and Community Nurture on April 28th. A glorious spring day found a rainbow of yoga mats on the Nevius Street Bridge. Local Girl Scouts ranging from ages 7 – 11,

their leader Debbie Rubito and other brave Moms were lead by Loring Nagle, CYKT, CYT in a 45 minute self-nurturing yoga class. The yoga students warmed up in the sunshine, practiced breathing techniques to support inner calm, played with partner poses to celebrate community, learned

positive self-affirmations, and challenged themselves with arm balances. The healing energy of the river guided all to a peaceful and restful place. After yoga, everyone rolled up their mats and sleeves to dig around the Nevius Street Bridge sign. Strong girls dug through river clay and rocks to prepare holes deep enough for six beautiful perennials donated by Raritan’s own Raritan Valley Agway located at 77 Thompson Street. Serious scientific observations brought all digging to a halt as the girls took turns officially announcing worm sightings. Then all focus moved to removal of various river rocks. The girls called upon each other for removal help when coming across a particularly large rock! Finally the trench was dug deep enough and the plants were given a new home complete with compost and mulch donated by Agway and Leader Rubito. The treasured rocks became a wall for the small garden as the girls excitedly promised to return and water their plantings.

Bridgewater MOMS Club Plans Summer Activities Bridgewater West MOMS (Mothers Offering Mothers Support®) Club has been very busy this spring. Our park play-dates are back on our calendar. Our children are thoroughly enjoying the warm weather and the freedom and independence that being outdoors offers. Our community service projects included collecting card fronts for St. Judes and collecting gently used baby items for the Pregnancy Aid Center. We also celebrated Mother’s Day with a brunch and enjoyed delicious food cooked by our members. We have been to the Nursing Home to bring smiles to our elderly friends; they always enjoy our singing, laughing and energy. We continue to have potluck luncheons and playgroups at each other’s homes. This summer we will be headed to Point Pleasant to visit the beach and Jenkinson’s Aquarium. We will have lunch and swim time at Round Valley

Reservoir along with other activities. If these activities sound like something you would like to be involved in, don’t hesitate. Our Co-Presidents are waiting for your email. The MOMS Club of Bridgewater West, NJ is a chapter of the International MOMS Club, a non-profit, non-denominational organization for at-home mothers and their children. We offer age-specific playgroups, monthly meetings, newsletters, children’s and moms’ activities, field trips and MOMS Nights Out. Children are welcome at all events. The boundaries of our chapter include Bridgewater west of Country Club Rd; please email us at copresident1@gmail.com or copresident2@gmail.com. If

you fall outside our boundaries, please go to the International MOMS Club site (www.momsclub.org) to find a chapter closer to you. Don’t be a stay-at-home mom who just stays at home! Come and make new friends for both yourself and your children!

Basilone Bowl Game Set for June 28th

Bridgewater-Raritan High School Basilone Bowl players are: (l-r) Joshua Hanemann, Tommy Goodberlet, Ryan Stevens, Mike Pennella, Coach Bray, Karl Szymanski and Donny Stires. Photo/ Donna Goodberlet

The Basilone Bowl game will make its debut on June 28, 2013. The home for this yearly football game will be its namesake, Basilone Field, at Bridgewater-Raritan High School. The event is being sponsored by the U.S. Marine Corps. Senior high school football players from Somerset County and Delaware Valley High School in Hunterdon County have been selected

to play. The high schools participating will be divided into two teams, one being the Devil Dogs and the other being the Leathernecks. Bridgewater-Raritan High School will be well represented on the Devil Dogs side. Varsity Football Head Coach, Scott Bray, will assume the same role for the Devil Dogs. Coach Bray will be joined by the follow-

ing BRHS class of 2013 players: Tommy Goodberlet (Ithaca College); Joshua Hanemann (Susquehanna University); Mike Pennella (Gettysburg College); Ryan Stevens (Kean University); Donny Stires (Lehigh University); and Karl Szymanski (Mansfield University). “This is one last chance for the seniors to play together before college. Some of us have played football together since 2nd grade” states Szymanski. Goodberlet said he has learned a lot about John Basilone since being asked to play. “It is an honor to play in a game named for a man who was the only Marine to ever be awarded the Medal of Honor, Navy Cross and Purple Heart”. Goodberlet, Hanemann, Pennella, Stevens and Szymanski will all be playing football at their respective colleges. Game time for the Basilone Bowl is 6:00pm on June 28th. Tickets cost $8 each, but veterans and children age 3 and under are admitted for free. Proceeds from this year’s event will go to a local wounded veteran and to the U.S. Marine Corps.

BRMS Students Receive Award in National eCybermission Contest

Eighth graders (l-r) Jack McManus, Amit Nitin, Morgan Nelson, and Hemang Dama Students pose with their homemade indoor composters. Photo/Rob Ambrose BRMS 8th graders Hemang Dama, Jack McManus, Morgan Nelson, and Amit Nitin developed an experiment which would solve a problem in their local community. The problem they decided on was turning wasted food scraps and paper from the school cafeteria into compost which could be used to supplement the soil in the school’s gardens. The students conducted a survey in early January to determine how much food was being wasted in the school cafeteria

on a daily basis. Their concern was that many students who purchased a school lunch were taking fruit and vegetables, only to throw them away at the end of lunch. The group found that over 1/4 of students surveyed were not eating the fruit and vegetables and were throwing them away. The students worked together to complete a “Mission Folder” which required them to work through all steps of the scientific method in order to solve the problem. They created simple

indoor composters using buckets which contained a mix of fruit and vegetable scraps and a carbon source (paper, cardboard, or newspaper). They set up different composters to determine if the carbon source used would have an effect on the rate of decomposition and heat produced by the compost. They designed and conducted their experiment in the classroom of Science Coordinator and team adviser Rob Ambrose. Mr. Ambrose oversaw the process and offered guidance. Data analysis, research, and preparation of their report were all done at home. The structure of the competition allowed students to work collaboratively online, using the eCybermission website as a portal. The students received an “Honorable Mention” award after the eCybermission judging process ended in late March. Five different judges reviewed the mission folder and provided students with feedback. The overall score given by the judges placed the group in the top 10% of nearly 3,500 groups across the country. Students will be receiving a certificate of achievement for their accomplishment, as well as a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) tool kit to help them continue their studies.

Bridgewater Resident Adds to Business

Brandon Gano and Signs By Crown Owner Jim Gano display one of the first banners they made in their new venture. Bridgewater resident Jim Gano, owner of Crown Trophy of Flemington, recently expanded his business operation in two ways. First, Gano purchased the assets and inventory of Economy Trophy in Whitehouse Station. “Economy Trophy has had a long tradition (over 40 years) of providing quality awards to their customers with a loyal following. When the owner Ed Zorsky passed away last October I was approached by his wife to purchase the business, it made perfect sense for us and will increase our sales and territory coverage, Gano said. The second addition to Crown Trophy of Flemington was the addition of a new business unit called “Signs by Crown which launched in March of this year.

Behind the platform was a grandstand where 250 important people from the state, military and entertainment world sat along with John’s parents. A blimp, a big deal in 1943, flew overhead. The master of ceremonies was Harry Hershfield, a popular New York Columnist and host of a radio show called Can You Top This. The program started with the singing of The National Anthem by a local rising singing star from Raritan, Catherine Mastice. A $5,000 war bond was presented to Basilone by parade organizer George Allgair. Basilone addressed the crowd: “I want to thank you Judge Allgair and these very good home folks of Raritan for this wonderful gift. For all my buddies overseas on the front lines - that they really appreciate everything you wonderful people are doing by backing the attack and buying these war bonds. Today is like a dream to me. Thank you all for everything from the bottom of my heart.” One Speaker was former Senator Joseph S. Frelinghuysen Sr. - whose son at the time was in an enemy POW camp. Frelinghuysen said, “Today, on the far flung battle fronts of the world, some 600 brave lads from Raritan have answered the drum beat of war; and you John are living witness that they fight valiantly and not in vain. Sergeant Basilone … may I express personally to you

the feeling of respect and admiration I have for the fine honor you displayed when, in recounting your experiences you said so modestly, ‘I think only a part of this medal belongs to me; pieces of it belong to the boys who fought by my side.’” Another speaker was ex-New York City Mayor James J. Walker. He praised Raritan and its Italian heritage. Those present said that he was the most dynamic, inspiring speaker of the day. Highlights from his talk were: “The ItalianAmerican and the Italian Soldier are as valiant as exist when they’ve got something to fight for. Sergeant Basilone is an inspiration, not only to other Italian–Americans, but to all Americans.” Two Hollywood stars, Louise Allbriton and Virginia O’Brien, were present at the parade and rally. Louise Allbriton surprised and delighted everyone when she kissed John Basilone on stage. The crowd let out a tremendous roar. She then repeated the kiss a second time, in order to give the cameramen a chance to get pictures. John’s sister Mary later wrote how John turned bright red upon his kiss with the beautiful movie star. Three stars of New York Night Clubs were on hand - Maurice Rocco, Bob Morris, and Danny Thomas - who was at the beginning of his career. (Thomas would later have his own T.V. show, The Danny Thomas Show.)

Catherine Mastice returned to the microphone to sing a new song especially written for the event. It was called Manila John. Toward the end of the program, Master of Ceremonies Harry Herchfield talked John’s dad Salvatore into saying something to the crowd in Italian. Many understood his message, as Raritan was a second generation Italian town, where the older people often spoke Italian. The parade was covered by the local papers and The New York Times. Life Magazine ran a four page story about Basilone Day. The Fox Movietone News made a newsreel that was shown at movie theatres throughout the country. The next week locals flocked to the theatres to see this short footage, and oh yes, to see the regular movie as well. This newsreel footage, which is just one minute and ten seconds long, is a true delight. The first scene of the newsreel shows John riding in a car on Main Street in Somerville. The camera’s position was high above and the video shows the large enthusiastic crowd on both sides of the street. The whole spirit of the event is captured in this shot. The real gem is at the end of the newsreel, when John speaks to the crowd at the rally. This audio of Basilone talking is just one of two known to exist. John Basilone Day was an overwhelming success. Even the weather turned out perfect. On his big day, John Basilone did not disappoint anyone who came to see him. He acknowledged the crowd throughout the day and spoke briefly at the bond rally. However, personally he said he was overwhelmed by it all. On the speakers stand he wished he had said more, but the words just did not come. Some friends said he was not him-

Crim Students Discuss Super Powers Students from Miss Rott’s fourth grade class at Crim School recently answered the question, “If you could have a super power, what would you choose to have? Why? What superhero name would you choose?” Their answers appear below:

Dana

A $5,000 war bond was presented to Basilone by parade organizer George Allgair. self the day of the parade. Everyone wanted to shake his hand or touch the medal. Security guards were necessary during parts of the day to keep the well-meaning crowd back. Basilone remained in Raritan for a few weeks after the parade. During this period the town was thrilled to have him back. A couple times kids would gather outside the Basilone home (located where the Shell Station is today at the corner of 202 and First Ave.) and chant for John to come outside to talk with them. John was always happy to talk with the local kids. After a few weeks at home he went on the Bond Tour with celebrities Virginia Grey and John Garfield. After the tour the top military brass told John that he had done enough for the war on the battlefront and his orders were now to work a desk job on the homefront. However, “Manila John” felt a Marine in wartime

does not belong at a desk and he asked to go back in action. Eventually he was granted his wish to return to the boys. On February 19, 1945 Basilone helped get a stalled attack started at Iwo Jima, but he was killed later that same morning. For his heroics at Iwo Jima he was awarded The Navy Cross. This year is the 70th anniversary of that fabulous 1943 parade. Those who attended in 1943 are encouraged to attend this year’s John Basilone Parade on September 22nd. T-Shirts are currently being made to be worn at this year’s parade by those who were there in 1943. The shirts say, “I was there at the 1943 Basilone Welcome Home Parade.” Details on how to obtain a T-shirt will be forthcoming in the September issue of the Breeze and at www. raritan-online.com.

Visibility Girl would be my superhero name. I could be one hundred percent invisible, 90%, 80% or less. I would be able to control my visibility! This would help if I wanted to avoid or scare an enemy by being invisible or transparent. It would be fun!

If I could have any super power I would control the weather, what the air and temperature are like. I chose this power because I could change the weather whenever I wanted. My name would be Weathergirl because I control weather and I’m a girl. These are perfect powers.

Gianna

“Swash” was the sound of the powerful wind blowing in my face as I flew over the city. Yes, I thought to myself, everyone knows me. I’m a hero! My name was printed on newspapers and on TV! Gianna the Great! That’s my name and saving lives is my game!

Chris

If I were to have a superpower it would be to breathe underwater. I chose this because I spend over a quarter of my life swimming every day. It would be really cool if I could keep on swimming without taking time to breathe.

Nick

If I could have a superpower, I would choose to have the ability to turn into anything (animals, objects, etc.) because if someone needed something, I could turn into what they need. I would call myself the Transformer because I can transform into anything. Flying would be my superpower.

Annabel

If I could have a superpower, it would be to invisibilitize myself. I would want to have a power like this because in desperate situations like hiding from a bad person, it would come in handy. If I could choose my name, it would be Disappearing Girl.

Becky

If I could have a superpower, it would be the power of lava. That way when evil crooks try to steal money, I could blast them. I could stop mischievous villains with the force of lava. My name would be Lava Lady!

Harlem Wizards Bring Their Magic to Bridgewater

Harlem Wizards Coming to Branchburg Sports Complex for Summer Basketball Camp

A fundraising game of hoops was played on April 26th between the Harlem Wizards and the Hometown Heroes team which was comprised of B-R government officials, teachers, principals, and staff members from B-R schools. The bleachers of the BRHS gymnasium were packed as excited students and parents marveled at the basketball wizardry on the court. The Wizards combined preplanned comedic acts with spontaneous humor that had the crowd roaring with laughter. The halftime show had hundreds of kids on the court playing Simon Says with the Harlem Wizards and once the game was over the Wizards stayed until every autograph was signed. The event was a slam dunk for school spirit and community support as the Project Graduation committee raised thousands of dollars for graduating seniors to have “a night to remember at Dave & Busters” with the help of the Harlem Wizards. Top right: The crowd roars with laughter as Hamilton School Principal Dan Fonder is chased by one of the Harlem Wizards. Photo/Dennis Avenoso

North Branch Park was a rocket launch pad for about 50 Cub Scouts and their parents on May 16th. Adult leaders explained and demonstrated how to assemble the rockets and in the ensuing 45minutes, participants diligently prepared the rockets for launching. Then groups of four rockets were simultaneously launched by electronic devices. After about an hour every Scout had his rocket soar about 200 feet into the air. Parents and Scouts marveled at the power of the launchers sending the rockets skyward. Everyone attending left with a smile. Photo/ Mark N Weiss

Boys Golf - This season the boys golf team was led by senior captains Dominic Diaz and Eric Sherman. The other members of the varsity team are seniors Matthew Crisafi and Scott Brandle, Junior Larry Thul and Sophomore Ryan Lambert. The team competes in the Skyland Conference, Delaware East Division. The teams in this division are some of the best in NJ. The team’s final record of 7-9 doesn’t truly reflect the level of golf these boys play. One season highlight for the team was a 183 - 188 win against Phillipsburg at Architects Golf Club. This was the lowest team score a Bridgewater team has shot in a match in the 10 years Coach Ed O’Melia has been coaching. Dominic Diaz achieved individual honors this season taking 5th at the Somerset County Tournament, 4th at the High Bridge Hills Tournament, 4th at the Hillsborough Tournament and 7th at the Skyland Conference Tournament. Dominic Diaz and Ryan Lambert both qualified individually for the state sectional tournament at Alpine Country Club. Dominic placed 3rd at the tournament and qualified for the Tournament of Champions. Boys Lacrosse – Since the last edition of the BReeze the boys have increased their record to 11-5 in nine games. Seven of those games were wins, one of which was a hard fought battle on May 16th versus top twenty Mountain Lakes, final score 7 to 5. Leading the offense is Tyler Konen with 31 goals and 15 assists. Other leading scorers for the Panthers are Griffin Figel with 23 goals and 20 assists, Ryan Mygatt 23goals and 10 assists, and Cody Ruperto with 21 goals and 6 assists. Goalie Donny Stires has 82 saves to his credit. Having dispatched Columbia, 14-1, and North Hunterdon, 16-1, from the state tournament the Panthers next face Ridge on May 23. Baseball – A tough first round loss to Perth Amboy knocked the boys out of the state tournament. The game went into extra innings with a 1-1 tie. BR could not match the 2 runs Perth Amboy scored in the eighth inning. Their record of 17-10 and their many close, hard-fought battles with strong opponents should give the boys much to be proud of. Pitching for the Panthers for their winning season were Will Geraghty, Drew Petillo, and Brandon Weidenfeld. Five Panthers who batted over .400 are Mike Fair (.405), Josh Jankowski (.432), Nick Norcia (.457), Josh Robbins (.559), and Eric Schnepf (.462). Go Panthers!

Softball – The Panthers suffered a tough loss to sixth seed Elizabeth in the first round of states. A pair of homeruns in the seventh inning only got them to within one run, final score 8-7. Season standouts at the plate were Jordan Stephenson (.478), Sarah Rebetje (.339), Kayla VanValkenberg (.313), and Alyssa Natale (.295). Pitching for the lady Panthers were Abby Herman and Lauren Gorski. Girls Lacrosse – With only one hash mark in the win column the “Never say die” girls proved it by giving their best when others would have given up. The girls lost by only one goal in the SCT to Hillsborough and with the season coming to a close the lady Panthers were able to win 4 of their last 5 regular season games outscoring their opponents 26 to 6. Leading scorers were Leanne Bak, 25 goals, 16 assists; Dayle Paustian, 35 goals, 9 assists; Tracy Rusen, 26 goals, 19 assists; and Rachel Yaney, 46 goals, 12 assists. Julia Santillo had 139 saves in goal.

Boys Tennis – The boys had a great season against some very strong opponents. Going 17-6 the Panthers placed third in the county championships and made it to the quarterfinals of the state tournament. First Singles Eric Tai also qualified for the state singles tournament which begins June 1st. Boys Volleyball – Now at 19-10 the boys volleyball team is having a great season. They are seeded 7th in the powerhouse packed Central Jersey Bracket for the state tournament. They took down 10th seed Pennsauken at home on May 21st, 25-15, 25-15. Next up is number 2 seed East Brunswick.
