from the

RABBI Shir Shabbat and the Next Generation Steven L. Silver, Rabbi

Dear Friends, A few weeks ago two hundred Religious School students and their families joined the 'regulars' on a Saturday morning for the first Shir Shabbat (literally 'Shabbat song') of the season. Shir Shabbat is an awesome worship service involving a full band, tefillot projected onto a giant screen on the Bimah and dozens of students ascending the Bimah to sing the various parts of the service to tunes old and new. The Torah service is even more innovative; we dance the Torah from the ark into the Social Hall where a giant table awaits so we can unroll the scroll to enable the little ones to see as Rick Muller chants the ancient text. As this great spectacle unfolded before my eyes I had a sense that a high point in the life of the synagogue and my own rabbinate had been achieved. For twenty five years we have carefully nurtured the next generation so that some day they will take our place in the Sanctuary.

We have done this with Tot Shabbats, Festival celebrations (think N'eilah, Simhat Torah and Purim) and various formats for Religious School services. Yet the goal of bridging the younger families into Shabbat morning worship has been elusive. Afterall, it requires greater Hebrew fluency and time commitment. At the same time we have invested in the shabbat morning minyan so that the spiritual life of the community would have a place to encounter more forcefully the majesty of Torah and the power of communal prayer. Creating Shir Shabbat on a sabbath morning was a gamble. What if the minyan we have so tenderly nurtured was offended by the use of technology, the band, the exuberance of the young? What if the Religious School families refused to attend? As the tempo of the service picked up I surveyed the faces of the regulars. Their broad smiles and toes tapping to the rhythm of the younger generation's music told the story. Suddenly I had difficulty in distinguishing between the younger generation and the veterans. Could it be that a new generation of 'regulars' is beginning to emerge? Is not the appeal of our tradition eternal and ageless? With special thanks to Cantor Jessica, Randi Sher, Dan Spector, Rick Muller and Aliya Stuart. Our next Shir Shabbat format will be a Family Celebration of Hanukkah , on Friday, December 14th with both our Tuvia and Religious School students participating. Our festive dinner will be prepared by Sisterhood.

TEFILAH erev shabbat (weekly)

shabbat morning (weekly)

Over the past few months, David Dreyer and his Membership Committee have been developing new and exciting events for the Temple Menorah community. Their goals are to re-energize our existing member-base, develop new ways of marketing our synagogue to prospective members with an increased emphasis on welcoming our new congregants.

family tot shabbat

Towards that end, we will be profiling members who have a unique story in an attempt to highlight what comprises our Temple Menorah community; future articles will profile a member, family, or business that relects who we are. Please feel free to forward your suggestions for future columns to Geoff Hirsch (grhirsch@verizon.net).

PIZZA ON PASSOVER?

shalev b’lev service

For the Goldberg family, that’s not surprising. Adam and his wife, Debbie, have been members of Temple Menorah for nearly 10 years. In addition to starting a successful, family-owned business, Fresh Brothers Pizza, (currently with eight stores), they balance a busy work schedule with their role as Jewish parents. Their twins, Ryann and Nathan, both attended Tuvia pre-school and were members of the first kindergarten class.

Both the Goldberg family and their business contribute extensively to Temple Menorah. “We’ve introduced several members to Temple Menorah” Adam states proudly. And Fresh Brothers Pizza is a major sponsor of the Purim Carnival, among other Temple events. In fact, their product is seen at Bar/Bat Mitzvah classes, Tot Shabbat, and even at Temple Board meetings.

COMMUNITY TEMPLE MENORAH

Their stores feature several unique items, and emphasize a “kid-friendly” atmosphere and menu; including a “special kids pizza sauce”, (it’s loaded with vegetables-but still ‘yummy’), and even “matzah pizzas” for Passover. How nice it is to have such vital members of our congregation, especially when they contribute such important food groups as pizza.

Adam cited the “strong sense of community” as a major benefit of being affiliated with the synagogue. “It’s a great support system for the kids; their friends may all go to different schools, but they are able to have and maintain friends from all over…”

FROM CANTOR JESSICA Are you ready for the most exciting Shabbat Service yet? Friday night, December 14th, 2012 will undoubtedly be the Hanukkah/Shabbat celebration that you have been waiting for. This evening involves ALL of our Temple Menorah Religious School, Tuvia, and youth choir children, but also features our sisterhood and their delicious latkes! But wait, that’s not all… We will have our first ever (since I’ve been here) musical artist in residence, Seth Ettinger and his band, to help lead us in fantastic Shabbat and Hanukkah music. The evening will be a time to schmooze with our wonderful community, dance to some great music, sing your heart out to the beauty of prayer in song, and where the whole family can enjoy Shabbat and Hanukkah together. I’m so excited! Are you?! I hope to see you there!

TUVIA PRESCHOOL IS PROUD TO PRESENT HARVEST PROGRAM WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 7 Tuvia School children will explore the similarities between Sukkot and Thanksgiving by recalling their fun and learning during Sukkot and preparing a meal, from scratch, to eat communally.

Friday November 2 2012

Even though the people, time periods, traditional food, and geographic locations are extremely dissimilar the basic reason and traditional celebrations have much in common. Both are about harvest, family, food, and tradition. Young children have very little, if any, concept of time especially when it is longer than a few days. Consequently, teaching them about pilgrims, “Indians”, or the origins of Sukkot is meaningless. However, they are ready to learn about who they are, where they live, and their cultural and religious celebrations and traditions.

HANUKKAH CELEBRATION WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 12

GRATITUDE & JEWISH BOOK MONTH Tuvia 3 year olds will participate 5:30 pm: Craft 5:45 pm: Dinner ‐ RSVP required! 6:30 pm: Children’s Service 7:15 pm: Potluck Dessert Oneg $30 per family or $15 per person if you RSVP by Oct. 31

Sunday, November 18, 10am - 3pm - Temple Menorah Some exciting construction projects are happening all over Temple Menorah. The recently completed, refurbished Tuvia playground area and the new playground bathroom are now open and “ready for business (play).” Nestled in the midst of our existing “biblical garden,” which features mature olive and pomegranate trees, is the beginning of the latest project of the Temple’s Social Action Committee: our temple garden. The plan is to grow vegetables and salad greens that may be used at temple events and community dinners, as well as producing flowers to brighten the synagogue during services. The garden will be organic, using natural compost (not chemicals) as fertilizer. We also plan to involve the Religious School students to teach them about green, sustainable growing methods – this project will thereby benefit the entire Temple community. This project, headed by long-time members Joe Porzucki and John Schugel, is actively seeking additional volunteers. So join us at our first work-party Sunday, November 18th. We’ll be clearing plots and building the raised-beds. Come join us to help, and enjoy the Canter’s deli-truck.

Comes to the South Bay!!!! Beginning Sunday, November 4th you will finally be able to eat GREAT Deli at Temple Menorah on Sundays from 11:30am–2pm You will find delicious deli sandwiches, matzo ball soup, lox and bagels, knishes, black and white cookies and SO MUCH MORE…… Tables and chairs will be setup on the patio so you can stay & schmooze with your friends too! Special orders will be accommodated with 48 hours advance notice. Please email CantersTruck@gmail.com with your order.

Thank you!

WINTER CAMP CHILDREN NEED FUN MORE THAN WE KNOW OR REALIZE! In today’s busy schedules the children of our community seem to be as busy, if not busier than the adults. From attending school, Religious School, sports teams, activities, projects, etc., it seems like we do not want to let our kids miss ANYTHING. I get it, I really do, since I do not like to miss out on anything either. Sadly though, I have noticed that many times these children are missing something important, that each and every one of us enjoyed regardless of when we were kids. What these kids are at risk of loosing is unaltered FUN. That’s right, the idea of just having fun and laughing, running around or being crazy just for the sake of being a kid and having fun. You might be asking why I am talking about this so let me explain. At the end of December we will have yet another year of Winter Camp. This is a program designed for one reason only, FUN. We have two weeks without school as we transition into the New Year. This gives me six days to have a great time and let kids do what they do best when given the opportunity; use their imagination! You see, fun isn’t frivolous or useless; it’s a launching pad into the most valued piece of each of us, our individuality and creativity. You can pick the days that work for your family and do not have to attend all of Winter Camp. I love this part of my job! Our Winter Camp registration and information is provided here in the Menorah Message and I invite you all to start looking, asking questions, planning schedules, and RSVPing for these exciting events!

[ ] A Muppets Workshop! (Wednesday, December 26th) $60 Jim Hansen’s Muppets have spanned over 50 years and are still a popular topic! To kick of a winter camp of fun and imagination each camper will be able to make their very own puppet. Now this is NOT easy so we will be bringing in some resident experts to help us out! Just think when its all over, there could be a puppet that looks like just like you!

] Unique Pizza and Lazer Tag (Thursday, December 27th) $60 What better way to spend a Thursday then group Lazer Tag battles. From sounds of space, and lasers flying by we are definitely going to feel like we are in the future! Then since we are in the future in all each camper (now an “adult for the day”) will be traveling to Fresh Brothers to create the pizza of their wildest imagination! Now THAT’S cool! If you love this idea make sure you check out our last event with Iron Chef: Winter Addition!

[ ] Ahhh, Recycled Monsters! (Friday, December 28th) $60 We all have an inner artist just going crazy inside waiting to be let out. With this program campers are sure to open their creative minds and show their true artistic abilities. Factor in the Mountain of Recycled and mismatched pieces and we are making some amazing things from resources others have decided aren't useable. A great way to express Tikkun Olam and see how little we need to waste in order to create something spectacular!

[ ] Totally Messy Day! (Wednesday, January 2nd) $60 An event that is not only self explanatory but also EXACTLY what every kid really wants… to make a HUGE MESS. JUST FOR FUN!!! Starting from 9 am until 3 pm we are jumping from paint tag, messy twister, and even Splatter painting. We will do EVERYTHING but clean up (until 3:00pm!)

[ ] Movie and Bowling (Thursday, January 3rd) $60 The best of two worlds. A chance to simply veg out and relax as we watch this hilarious comedy perfect for constant laughter. After we enjoy these hours of sitting in the dark we switch gears and off to the bowling alley. The bright lights, sounds of crashing pins, and the funny looking shoes wil lbe a perfect Ying to the movies Yang. This way there is something everyone loves and we don't have to pick between two great things!

[ ] Iron Chef: Camp Menorah Edition (Friday, January 4th) $60 Back by an overwhelmingly popular demand we are going to have another round of Iron Chef! Come as we turn Camp Menorah into Kitchen Stadium for an all day intensive cooking battle. Lunch will be provided as part of the activity!

** Camp ends at 3 pm every day unless specified, extended and early care will be available based on enrollment. Lunch is being served daily. Menu will be available week prior. Please bring lunch if your child does not like what we are serving that day.
