Dear Friends, We are looking forward to a February filled with outstanding programs and opportunities; Dean Erwin Chemerinsky, the founding dean of UCI law school, will kick off our new Distinguished Speaker's Series February 12th. Each of the speaker's will explore some aspect of the challenge of leading an ethical life in the modern age. Dean Chemerinsky is one of the nation's leading constitutionalists and has published widely in areas related to the Bill of Rights. We hope you will be able to join us and bring your friends and neighbors to hear all of our speakers.
Toward the end of the month we will celebrate Purim with a community party rather than the now customary carnival, Saturday evening February 23rd. Over the years we have heard from you that we need to concentrate our programming. So this year we are trying out a new concept; an all-in-one megillah, service and shpiel which will begin a little before Shabbat ends with fun activities for the little ones including bouncers, games, food and fun. In order to honor Shabbat we will focus more on the megillah and shpiel and offer prepaid all inclusive wrist band so that kids and famlies will be able to participate in the games. Finally, we close out a really busy February with a terrific Rosenberg Cultural Center fundraiser, an Oscar Night Gala party on Sunday the 24th. This will be your chance to get out your black ties, tux and long dresses and enjoy an elegant and exciting evening with Morgan Land, and Jessica Tourtelot in support of the Rosenberg Center. Rosenberg is now in its fourth year of active service to the Jewish Community of the South Bay. I hope to see you in shul!

CANTOR’S CORNER If you've seen me walking around the Temple, you know I have a fashion sense that's all my own. Sometimes I get it right, sometimes I'm in work-out clothes coming from or going to zumba or spinning class, and sometimes my style is just a bit...unique. One thing is certain, however, I am always dressed special for Shabbat. On Shabbat, I wear outfits that I wouldn't wear the rest of the week (unless there was a funeral or wedding, of course). Why all of this emphasis on special Shabbat clothes, you ask? It relates back to the text, of course! In the book of Ruth 3:3, Naomi tells Ruth: “Wash yourself, anoint yourself, and put on your fine clothes.” The Talmud expands on this verse, clarifying: “These were her Shabbat clothes. Rabbi Chanina said: A person must have two sets of garments, one for weekdays and one for Shabbat.” You might be saying to yourself, "That was then, this is now, and I want to wear comfortable and casual clothes to the synagogue. I've been at work all day, it's time to let loose”. It's true, Temple Menorah and the surrounding beach synagogues tend to have a laid back Shabbat style, and I think that is part of what makes us so awesome! That doesn't mean, however, that we can't embrace the beauty of Shabbat and wear something special to represent the distinctiveness of the day. Can't we be comfortable, relaxed, and still represent Shabbat? If we wear special Shabbat attire, we will feel the sense of what makes Shabbat so holy and distinct from the wardrobe of the rest of the week. In The People's Prayer Book vol 10 Alyssa Gray commented on this Talmudic verse, "Wrapping the day of rest in splendor". She said, "Abudarham (14th century Spain) sees this as an illusion to the mitzvah of weekday. His interpretation goes back to the Yerushalmi, where Rabbi Simlai lectured in public about the need for specially festive Shabbat attire. His lecture affronted poorer scholars who could not afford to purchase special Shabbat wear. Rabbi Simlai advised that if they could not change all their clothes for Shabbat, they should at least change something about the way they wore their usual clothes." (PT Peah 8:8, 21b) What we wear reflects our attitude. If we dress special, we are reflecting an attitude of respect towards Shabbat and, in turn, respect for our holy places and for God. Just like eating the challah, lighting the candles and drinking the wine; the minhagim (traditions) of Shabbat help remind us of the holiness of the Sabbath day and enable us to take part in that holiness. What does special Shabbat dress mean? It doesn't mean we have to wear a ballgown or business suit to services... Here are a few pictures of what special Shabbat dress might look like... Remember, you don't have to sacrifice your fashion sense to come to the synagogue. You can be fashion forward and Shabbat special at the same time… B’shira, Jessica

CAMP MENORAH: WE’RE GOO-GOO FOR GAGA!! I am happy to announce the first annual South Bay wide GAGA Tournament! Each congregation in the South Bay will assemble a JR & Varsity Team to compete in this age bracket to decide the champions of the South Bay! Each team will also identify a tzedakah cause of their choice and the $5 event charge will be used to send funds to the winning team’s cause. This event will be sponsored by Camp Menorah and our amazing summer staff will be joining us as referees to regulate the intense competition. This is our chance to connect and see how many Jews in the South Bay know and love GAGA. We are already very excited for this upcoming summer. The theme is “Celebrate Good Times, A Jewish year into just 8 crazy weeks” and this gives us the chance to have an entire summer of celebration. With many veteran staff coming back for yet another summer our programming is going to be incredible. The registration will be out shortly and I urge everyone to start registering early so that we can create even better programming for the summer which is only a few short months away! Dear Friends, Temple Menorah takes the security of our members very seriously. As many of you are aware, two years ago we expanded the security features around our facility with the help of a grant from the department of Homeland Security. Even with our extensive security improvements, breaches can happen. In particular, I am asking everyone to please understand that the downstairs gate MUST ALWAYS remain closed and cannot be propped open. We are asking each of you to help us maintain a secure facility by using the code to get in and out of the building. Thank you for your support and cooperation.

FAMILIES AND CYBERBULLYING: UNDERSTANDING & ADDRESSING CYBERBULLYING It’s that that time of year again when Temple Menorah gears up to face social action issues that are greater than ourselves. One event is Michael Mitzvah Day, and the other is the Jewish World Watch Walk to End Genocide. This year, the JWW Walk to End Genocide will be held on April 21st in Mile Square Park in Orange County, and will begin at 10 am. It has an interfaith theme, so hopefully our interfaith friends will join us in this humanitarian campaign. We have successfully reached our fundraising goals each year, and are counting on you to help meet our goal of $2500. The walk is only one and a half miles. There is an $18 registration fee, which includes a tee shirt. Children under eleven walk for free, with no registration fee. Additional donations, however, are always welcome. After the walk, which will conclude at approximately 1 pm, we will have a gathering as a synagogue community. This will be at the park or somewhere close by for those who wish to join. Religious School will be closed that day to ensure full participation as a community. The walk is a beautiful mitzvah, and a social gathering allows us to reflect on the events of the day. Stay tuned for more details on the community gathering. The Temple Menorah team for this year has already been set up on the JWW web site. Will you help us reach our goal, or set up a team of your own? We will continue to publish information on the walk along with the links so you can donate. Judaism 101 is a class designed for peoplee who want to gain an intellectual knowledge of Judaism as well as the skills to perform basic rituals. Joe Katzelnick Social Action (Feed the Hungry) Fund –food to be served monthly at the various homeless shelters and soup kitchens located in the South Bay community. Mitzvah / General Fund –support the ongoing activities around Temple Menorah. Neu Help the Needy Fund –to ensure that every hungry family and child have enough food to fill their tummies. Prayer/Torah Book Fund –replace old and torn prayer books with fresh new copies. Religious School Enrichment Fund –provide enhanced programming and educational opportunities for the children in Religious School. Rosenberg Senior Cultural Center – enhance the outstanding programming delivered to the senior community at Temple Menorah. Scott Silver Memorial Library– help purchase new books and materials for the library. Tuvia Playground Fund-help remodel the Tuvia playground with new equipment and bathrooms!. Tuvia School- enables enhanced programming and educational opportunities for the children and faculty. Youth– support our Youth Center with new furniture & equipment.
