from the

RABBI ‘I was a Slave in Egypt’ Steven L. Silver, Rabbi

Dear Friends, In a few weeks Jews the world over will bring Passover into their homes. Families and friends will gather from great distances, copious amounts of food will be prepared, a multitude of haggadot will read and heaps of horse radish and matzah will be consumed. Jewish Holidays are rich with traditions. Many of us gently kvetch about the many days of cleaning and meticulous preparation required; some change over their dishes, remove the leavened products and give their homes a thorough spring cleaning. It is exhausting, but we do it anyway because it’s our tradition. Even so there are subtle changes in every family’s Seder. I’m not referring to the recipes we follow but the messages we derive from the ancient Pesach story. We will still declare as did our forbearers ‘we were slaves to Pharaoh and now we are free.’ But, as our society becomes more secular and individualistic our understanding of those words has shifted over the last few generations.

Our ancestors understood the concept of freedom in Jewish terms. It meant for them the freedom to be Jewish, to worship and serve God as Jews, freedom to not be persecuted. The world they inhabited was, for the most part, intolerant of Jews and Judaism. They were subject to discrimination and humiliation, or worse, on a daily basis. Our children have grown up with a far different reality. I suspect if our children were asked what the ‘freedom’ of the Liberation from Egypt meant to them they would reference personal freedom, especially freedom of choice and expression. Of course, that’s a good thing. But I do worry that they understand the message of Passover freedom to include the very American idea that they are free to choose their identity- even free to leave the Jewish People. While identity is a matter of personal choice in our contemporary society I assure you the ancient haggadah and even contemporary Judaism make no such claim. Our religion teaches that every Jew, regardless of belief or daily practice, is part of an eternal covenant of holiness. The 1999 Statement of Reform Jewish Principles says it best, “We are Israel, a people aspiring to holiness, singled out through our ancient covenant and our unique history among the nations to be witnesses to God's presence. We are linked by that covenant and that history to all Jews in every age and place.” As ‘witnesses to God’s presence’ we are freed from the oppression of slavery and liberated to envision a world based on justice, peace and equity for all people. As Jews that is our heritage; we must only declare, “I was a slave in Egypt, now I am free.” The Pesach message is clear, we must include our ourselves in the narrative, it is our personal story.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR HOME KOSHER L'PESACH

Based on “Guide to passover published by the Union of Reform Judaism 1. What is Chametz? If one of the five grainswheat, oats, rye, barley or spelt comes in contact with water after being cut of from the ground, it becomes fermented or chametz. This fermentation takes 18 minutes according to tradition. Pesahdik baked goods are made from flour which has not been fermented. The term chametz is also applied to dishes and utensils which have been in contact with chametz food during the year.

2. Why do most Ashkenazim not eat beans, rice, corn, peas or peanuts on Pesach? Although these are not among the five species of grain that can become chametz the Rabbis forbade their use because in the past, flour was made from them. To avoid possible confusion, most Ashkenazic rabbis ordained that these not be used at all. Non-flour products, such as peanut oil, may be used if they are prepared under Rabbinic supervision and properly certified.

3. Why must we clean our houses so thoroughly before Pesach? The rule against chametz on Pesach applies not only to eating but to enjoyment and also involves removing all the chametz from one's home. No chametz is even allowed to be in the possession of a Jew during Pesach. To facilitate this cleaning, the following rituals are part of Passover preparations.

a. Bedikat-Chametz - After the house has been cleaned, on the night before Pesach, we search one again for any crumbs of chametz we may have missed. We use a candle, a feather and a wooden spoon. This symbolized that all the chametz which we could see was removed.

b. Bittul Chametz - A formula renouncing any chametz left that we may have inadvertently missed is said, canceling our responsibility for it, thus symbolically removing it from our homes.

c. Be'ur Chametz - On the morning before Passover we burn the chametz that has been found during the search of the night before.

d. Merchirat Chametz - We are not always able to destroy or get rid o the chametz. It may be economically disastrous. so the Rabbis ordained that a symbolic sale is made of all the chametz of a non-Jew in the community who then sells it back to us after Pesach. The chametz is then no longer "in our possession." This is normally done by the Rabbi for the entire congregation. Incidentally, it is only necessary to sell or destroy food stuffs; dishes and utensils are simply locked away in storage or the duration of the festival.

6. Can any dishes and utensils used during the year be used on Passover? It is preferable to have dishes and utensils specifically reserved for Pesach and stored away during the rest o the year. However, since this is not always possible, the Rabbis ordained that certain types of utensils may be "Kashered," specifically prepared for Pesach. Earthenware, enamelware or porcelain utensils, if used during the year, may not be used during Pesach. a. Silverware, knives, forks and spoons made wholly of metal, if used during the year may be kashered by scouring thoroughly and then immersing in boiling water. They are then Pesahdik and parve. b. All table glassware is permitted after thoroughly scouring. There is also a practice of soaking glassware for 72 hours. c. Fine translucent chinaware, if not used during the previous year, is permitted. d. Metal pots and pans used for cooking purposes only (but not for baking), if made wholly of metal, may be used during Pesach if first thoroughly scoured and immersed in boiling water. Kashering is done in the following way: Fill a large pot with water and heat to boiling. Take the utensil, tie a string to it and immerse completely in the boiling water. For small items, a cord nettings can be used to dip several at once. (This process renders utensils Pesahdik and parve).

7. How may the stove be kashered? The stove is prepared by thoroughly scrubbing and cleaning all parts and turning on a full flame or the clean cycle in the oven and all the grates.

8. How may a Microwave be kashered? Microwave ovens present a special case, since the inside surface does not become hot. There is a difference of opinion as to whether, or how, one can be kashered. We recommend thorough cleaning and then placing a dish of water into the oven and allowing it to boil as a symbolic kashering.

9. How may a dishwasher be kashered? A dishwasher maybe used for Pesach after thoroughly scouring with boiling water and then running it empty for two cycles, one with soap and one without.

10. How may a refrigerator be kashered? Remove all chametz food and open packages. Cleans thoroughly with boiling water and scour the racks. In a freezer, frozen chametz foods should be put in a special closed-off section and should be sold with other chametz.

11. What are Ma'ot Hittim?

All these foods are considered chametz and may not be used during Pesach: Leavened bread, cakes, biscuits, crackers, cereals, wheat, barley, oats, rice, peas, dry beans and liquids which contain ingredients made from grain alcohol.

Matzah for Pesach is a mitzvah and a collection was taken up before Pesach to provide money for mitzvah and other Passover essentials to the poor. this is called Ma'ot Hittim. In our congregation, money collected goes to support Mazon, a Jewish organization working to eliminate hunger.

5. What foods require Rabbinic supervision for Pesach?

12. What will you have if you follow the above rules?

4. What foods may not be used during Pesach?

Matzah, noodles, candles, cakes, beverages, canned and processed foods, butter, jam, cheese, jelly, relishes, wines, liquors, salad oils, vegetable, gelatin, shortening and vinegar. A "Kosher L'Pesach" label without produce name and Rabbinic signature is of no value. This applies to produces made in America, Europe or Israel.

A "Pesahdik" home and a joyous, healthy and happy Pesach.
